In the limited series Midnight Mass, a beleaguered small town is given new hope when a charismatic mysterious priest visits and soon miracles occur all over the island. He believes it to be the work of God, but there appears to be something sinister brewing. Our story has some very big ideas on its mind, like does God have a plan, and what happens after we die? It's a lot to tackle but we're covering the whole thing, including the ending that leaves several aspects ambiguous.

She was originally Leigh from Haunting of Hill House, and she didn't really have a big role in it. I'm so glad that she was allowed to flex her acting muscles and become the fanatical lady you love to hate.

i liked how instead of showing the monster die, they used "she cant feel her legs" and the final shower of ashes that fall upon the kids to represent that.
Mike Flanagan clarified that losing feeling in her legs is akin to an infection leaving her system and is not meant to indicate any direct connection to the angel. The angels fate is left intentionally ambiguous.
I speculated that the angel represents evil and temptation which is why they never showed it burning or dying, showing that it will always be present to corrupt good

Bev is such a disgustingly good character. Every single action she chose really showed how evil she truly was. One thing I noticed that no one else has mentioned yet is the part where everyone drinks the acid- Bev hides. She runs away to the back of the church because even though she acts so righteous shes really a coward.
Right!! Or when she starts digging in the sand to try and hide from the sunrise! Really good actress, because the majority of her actions had me seething. I had to remind myself she is just an actress playing a character. 😂

I dunno, I think Paul was pretty damn awful as well. Bev was bad but there's a special place in Hell for people who are too stupid (or delusional) to understand the harm they're doing like he was.
@@CopiousDoinksLLC He admitted he knew what he was doing, he just wanted to be with the love of his life, and he was willing to do anything to turn back time and change that, so when he met the "angel" who is obviously a vampire, he took the chance.

The priest was so good in this show. The actor perfectly walked that gray area between good and bad. His sermons were passionate but still realistic. Bev was fantastic as well. I truly hated her.
When an actor makes you hate a character you're supposed to hate, you KNOW they're a perfect storm of excellent acting and writing doing what it's supposed to.
If someone watched this and didn't hate Bev, they weren't really watching it. The world is full of her type and this country has just enough of them that we are in serious trouble.

The scene where Sarah mentions how Father Pruitt would look at her as a kid and her thinking it was because she was gay totally flew over my head, but looking back now, it’s super obvious this was referring to her being his daughter. That took me by surprise later on and seeing it now WOW really good writing all around

I love the connection with Erin talking about how “everyone gets their wings clipped at some point” and how she pretty much killed the ‘angel’ by clipping his wings, this show was so well done and can’t wait for the next mike Flanagan project
I did like that everything came full circle.

@@773superprguy Personally I think that there are vampire stories in this universe, it’s just that the creature was slowly introduced through religion and fanatics that by the time rational people came to understand, there was no real point or time to examine it any further or to call a spade a spade.
It was first revealed to a sick old man deeply lost in dementia in a sandstorm. He was already lost mentally so when he saw an “angel” in a “church” that “saved him” making him you g and healthy again, he was just so amazed and still lost that his beliefs kicked in, leaving no room for rational thought.
After that, he only revealed himself to other strong believers after “miracles” had been performed and even then, there was hesitation at first, but it was a priest they’d known forever a young man healing people. They didn’t think about it too much. Plus it took a long time for anything “bad” to happen in front of others, he’d been doing “good” for quite a while before he suddenly killed people, drank their blood and couldn’t go out in the sun.
Except for Bev, but she was just an egotistical power-hungry nightmare of a fanatic.
@@773superprguy In my opinion Pruitt just confused the thing for an angel cause he was old and suffering from dementia before the "angel" "cured" him and because he was a priest then the most obvious thing would be that the thing was an angel for him.
Bev is the biggest monster to be found in this entire story. She manipulates poor Father Paul into turning the entire town just so she could be turned herself (without directly asking him). But what makes her truly terrifying to me is the world is full of Bevs, people who manipulate the world in the guise of doing good or working in the name of the Lord. I have no idea what waits for us (if anything) on the other side but I hope there is some sort of judgement for the Bevs of this world, I truly do.
Their will be. Not eternal, and ultimately restorative, but their will be a judgment.

Jesus Christ is God incarnate who came to earth to be born and live a perfect life, a sinless life. (He is one person of the Trinity, consisting of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; one God in three persons not three Gods.) Jesus then gave Himself up to be crucified and died to pay for the sins of the whole world. My sin, your sin, the sins of everybody. 3 days later He was resurrected. He now offers salvation to all who will turn from their sin and trust Him to save them from eternity in hell. He paid our debts because we couldn't, but we have to trust Him to do it. I cannot add anything to what He has done (not even baptism). I cannot do enough good to take even a year off of my death sentence in hell. The sentence is a never ending one, because I have sinned against an eternal God. But Jesus took my punishment, He saved me, and offers that same salvation to you. I am praying for you.
Less talented actors would make those monologues exhausting, but at no point did I find the story to loose momentum or feel less compelling. One of the best things about Flanagan’s work is how he gets the whole cast at the top of their game and delivers a unified, compelling, immersive story
agreed, except erins final monologue just kept on going and going. it was beautiful but damn it felt like an eternity.
I'm all for monologues, but this series kinda over did it to the point whenever more than one person sat down, I'd be like *here we go again. *
they were in fact exhausting and came across as pretentious to me

I didn't mind the the monologues I felt they were necessary for the story. Best scene is prob the boat scene. I really liked that part and the set up. I really think that scene is prob one of the best of any show.
This was a lot better than I originally thought it would have been. Father John's role was so suspenseful. You can tell something's off but feel like he actually has good intentions. Best acting I've seen in lots of the recent horror/mystery movies and shows
Hey handy Dan I’m not sure how often you reply to these or if u will see this but I’ve been wondering why it is you like horror movie so much I get some people like being scared but why is it you like being scared if that is the case. I’ve always struggled to understand emotions sometimes because of my mental health and I like your videos so much but it still confuses me on why people like being scared
@@christianbutler414 its not always about being scared tbh. Most people can relate to a lot of horror with the themes, emotions and stories they can put forward, I can't speak for everyone but for me it's fun to escape my own horrors and it helps to see characters overcome theirs (although they sometimes don't, like in midnight mass😂)
@@christianbutler414 hey Christian, I think because emotion itself consists of 2 sides: the mental and the physiological aspects. Scares feed us with adrenaline spikes which makes people feel "alive" or as people call it the "thrills", something that modern lives took away from our hunting genes. In low dosage it feels good to people. And as long as the mental aspect is tolerable (ie. not being scared to death), and they provide us with interesting stories to feed humans' ever hungry intellectual minds, scary movies will give people a great experience.
Hamish Linklater is so underrated! I first saw him in the TV series Legion. Check it out if you haven’t already.
Also, who is Father John? I thought the only Father was Paul?
Really all the acting in this show was great. I hated Bev, I felt for the Sheriff, I understood Riley, felt the sincerity and concern of Paul. Everyone played their parts wonderfully.
This is such a fascinating series because, to me, a Christian, it also serves as a big metaphor for how the church community sometimes has this toxic way of idolizing their leaders instead of worshipping God, and in favor of doing so, ignore all the satanic manipulations and abuse coming from their leaders, who also end up ruining their supposed churches and its members. It's so devastatingly sad how often this occurs in "Christian churches".

It's also about the dangers of ignoring Jesus' command to be discerning when someone claims to be from God or speak for God, yet they do evil instead. Ignoring all the warning signs and doing nothing or following is dangerous.
Great insight. Couldn’t agree more. Once we deviate from the gospel, it’s so easy to get deceived and for people to take advantage of others in God’s name.

I liked how Flanagan intentionally turned the apocalypse into a self-fulfilling prophecy for the town. It all ended how Bev and Pruitt planned, just not how they imagined.
Bev digging to escape death sums up her entire character.
They raged a war and chose Bev as their General 🤣 fools
Not really, Pruitt didn't plan on burning the island or letting the "saved" loose to feed on the rest of the people not in the church. It's part of what "woke" him up.

Nor how Bev was hand choosing who is saved and who isn't. So it didn't go as they originally planned, Bev just went even more off the deep end lol.
The acting that father Paul/Pruit portrayed in this series is just fantastic! When his voice broke when talking to Sarah’s mom about their daughter or at any time he would curse or raise his voice or even slightly lifted the curtain on his pure Christian persona was so expertly acted that scene when he lost his daughter and I realized “omg she’s never went to church this whole series” hit me because I immediately knew John pruit was hurting Great show!!

When Riley came back to talk to Erin when she was dying, I was sobbing so hard. Then it went to a straight up ugly cry when the Sheriff and his son were praying to Allah as the sun rose 🥴🥺😭

I wasn't ready for all the deaths I didn't watch any trailers or read any of the books. So sad I smiled when beth started to try dig a hole to hide from the sun

Bev DID deliberately kill the dog. You can see the hem of her dress when the person drops a hotdog that Pike eats. So yeah, she sorely deserved to have been predated upon or swallowing down a cup full of 1080 and feeling the agony she put another creature thru for no reasonable purpose. She’s the true monster in the show. The Angel is just an animal doing what it needs to do to survive. Pruitt was just a man who thought he was doing the right thing, and the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Bev is a selfish, conniving monster. I hope her end really hurt, had this been real life.
i disagree on some points: the angel didnt need to give its blood to infect further people in order to survive, it couldve sucked pruitt dry in the cave and moved on. So there was intention behind going along with the charade. And i believe that deep down pruitt knew what he was doing wasnt right but ignored his doubt for selfish reasons (a second chance with the lady). In my eyes thats villain behavior
i agree that bev was the real villain of the show but i wouldn’t say the angel was “just an animal” it definitely seemed to have a higher form of intelligence. think about the way it wears the robes to give it more of a pious image to the church or the way it shushes pruitt. it understands humans and their motivations which leads me to believe it’s probably just as smart, if not smarter than the humans in the show

@@mariadocarmosobreira8323 I'm pretty sure everyone knows that. They just refer to it as "The Angel" in their conversation because that's the name it's referred to in the show and the name FoundFlix kept using.
I actually think Bev took it one step further - she also poisoned Paul. His death was very similar to the poisonings we see everyone else suffer in the church, and there's nothing to suggest he was just going to die because he'd drunk the vampire's blood. As the rest of the series shows, the people have to die from _something_ before the vampire blood revives them as vampires themselves. Bev killed Paul out of jealousy, after having gotten away with poisoning Joe's dog just a couple of days prior.
What's significant about Ali and Hassan's death is that, it is the first prayer of the day.
It is the first prayer as a revert for Ali, it is also the first prayer as parent and child again for Hassan.
But sadly it is also the last prayer.
God I cried watching the ending, the Sun bringing different meanings, a new day, release, a new start, but also death.
This is beautiful - divine -sacred -Godly. The divine interconnectedness of all souls by prayer... 🙏🏻🕊🌏💐✌🏽✌🏻🛐❤️🩹🤜🏿🤛🏻
i feel whats also beautiful about this scene is that they both die together, Ali knowing that the sun will kill him and his father slowing dieing, brings him to face the sunrise right at shore line for they’re first/final prayer. Absolutely sobbing.
The Sherriff praying then falling over and Sturge asking for simple forgiveness from Ooker made the entire show for me...
Watching the scene with Hassan and his son at the very end actually got me crying cause I really liked Hassan, and seeing how their relationship was drifting throughout the story it was nice to see that it was rekindled before their final moments.
Oh and also I interpreted the moment she stopped having feeling on her legs was the moment the vampire/angel dies as it is the catalyst of the events in the story.
I enjoy that in the end both Riley and Erin experience the death the other spoke of. Riley witness the women he killed in her best self waiting for him happily without pain or suffering. Riley also seems to give a small smile showing the weight on him finally is gone as he can live peacefully in the afterlife. Erin on the other hand witness a final dream of her memories…one of the best memories she has as she slowly passes away her final dream is her being happy with the person she loved with the last memory they had together

@@BradPwnsU My impression was that the blood had worked it's way out of her system at that point, or she simply didn't have enough time to reanimate before the sun rose.

Said her blood also lit up in the sun and she was brought back to before she was pregnant but then again the vampire fed on her and didn't feed her his blood so I guess she lost all her blood lol I'm not sure

The characters are SO WELL WRITTEN and Acted. ESPECIALLY the Horrible, Bev, who hides her Wickedness Behind her knowledge of scripture. She is just AWFUL!! I could not wait to see her get what she deserved.
Bev's pretty much a less hysterical version of Mrs. Carmody from The Mist
One of the reasons that actually got me through the whole series was waiting for Bev to get her comeuppance. hah.

I loved watching bev try to frantically save herself from the sun. And honestly I wanted her to survive to keep the vampirism going because I am in love with the show

Honestly I feel bad for Joe because alcoholism is such a difficult thing to deal with and he just started the recovery. He was trying and he never got the chance to take a step back and declare victory. My dad was an alcoholic and Joe just reminded me of him so much.
Fuck alcoholics, they ruin everything for everybody around them. Only when they really, really want to get back on their feet they deserve help. Sadly this is often after they ruin a lot or do shit like this protagonist did.
He also had his only companion murdered in front of him :(
Not to mention he likely only drank out of guilt for shooting liza

Did anyone notice how Bev was digging like a dog on the beach in that final scene? its just so weird that there might have been a correlation to the dog that she poisoned&murdered

My only issue with this otherwise brilliant series was the *really* obviously old person makeup on certain characters, telegraphing from miles away that they were going to get de-aged.
You must have a good eye! I was wondering how in the world they had her looking so old!
Totally agree!! This was my pet peeve, it was such obvious fore shadowing, however the writing superceeded the poor makeup!!! 🙏🏻

It was funny for me because I knew that something was off in how they looked, but my mind didn't go right to young people in makeup for some reason lol. I ended up looking up the cast a few episodes in and then it clicked.

I actually pity Father Paul more than anything. He was an old man with dementia, and I've seen first hand what dementia does to someone. He then went through a traumatic experience, while still having dementia (it wasn't healed until the next morning - remember?) which convinced him he was visited by an angel. He wakes up healed and young the next morning, but who knows what mental influence the blood has on someone. I think he both wanted to help the community and get his second chance with Mildred; he never really separated them most likely. I think he was accidentally-ish brainwashed into believing that by following his plan, he was bringing eternal life to his congregation, without realizing until the last episode what the consequences would be. I don't think he was in his right mind until that episode, and he tries to atone once he realizes what he's done. I can't blame him for his actions when he was delusional during most of them.
Yeah I agree with the idea that the dementia was still influencing his thoughts even directly after the tomb when he wakes up young. In the same vein, getting shot in the head and being healed while already in his young body, I think knocked some sense into him. That's why he acted more rational in the final episode.
Not sure how delusional you have to be to think that a creature that literally looks like the biblical rendition of Satan is an angel.
I mean Mildred had dementia and she was completely healed after drinking enough blood and on top of that was smart enough to realize that something was off. Father Paul knew exactly what he was doing but he was driven by selfish desire to live "eternal life" with his family. He even reveals that in the last episode, saying that reuniting with his family was always his primary goal. No he made the conscious decision to feed his blood to the entire town while making up excuses to himself, telling himself that the vampire was "an angel". I mean he even has an entire speech to Riley about personal responsibility and how you have to be honest to yourself, while he is out here turning the town into vampire spawn.

I don’t see the actress playing Leeza get enough credit. Her scene with Joe in his mobile home might have been the best scene in the entire series. Incredibly gifted and moving. Also I might have missed it in your review. But the first service the priest leads a big clue is him wearing the Gold robes.
Don't be wrong I like that dress but in my opinion Joe wasn't in the wrong for using his own guns however it's not like they gave him a heads up saying hey we're walking back here why can't a man shoot his own guns when he wants to not to mention that gun safe her life

@@linktriforce9669 He feels guilty for hurting Leeza, even if accidently, that is the whole point. If you have any bit of empathy, you will feel bad for hurting others, even if you didn't mean to. And in this case, Joe knows it was his problem with alchool that indirectly caused him to hurt Leeza, which adds an extra layer of guilt.

One thing I feel is hinted at is the angel's origins. Pruitt meets the angel imprisoned in darkness after he falls. This strikes me as a reference to the notion of fallen angels

Also Hamish Linklater as Father Pruitt is simply phenomenal in this show. Carries the entire show on his shoulders. Take a bow.
I clocked that quite soon it was obvious midway through. Clues: Missing dad, they look very similar and the staring. He obviously wasn't a homophobe so I started suspecting he loved her in some way and once we find out who the priest really is I said wow he's her real dad.
Linklater's a great actor. Also very good in Legion.
That’s kind of disrespectful to the amazing performances given by everyone else. Hamish was my least favorite and I stand by that.
@@korykent5645 why least favourite? My favourite was the sheriff but I'm not sure there was a bad actor/proformance in the bunch...maybe Riley. Or the kids but I usually find kids in stuff annoying.
The ending is also a strong callback to the idea behind rational recovery: recognizing your inner demon and fighting it yourself, instead of expecting God to fight your demons for you.
The most blatant example is their thirst for blood and willingness to murder. Riley recognized this and fought back at the cost of his own life.
Oh wow I didn’t even put that together after watching it all the way thru twice. (A gf wanted to watch it and didn’t want to see it with someone who had already finished it so I fibbed lol it was worth a second viewing anyway)
It's also what ties in with the fight against alcohol addiction - rational recovery.
Filled with meaning and interesting details just like Hill House!
AA doesn't teach God will fight your demons for you. You're not praying away the addiction. You're promising God and your loved ones to endure, because if you only promise yourself you'll fail. I have seen this take a man from sleeping in a public bathroom with a needle in his arm, to back with his family getting a professional license. Opening your eyes is a small price to pay for your life back.

Mike Flanagan is saving the horror genre! In recent years it has become so boring and repetitive but he's a candle in darkness.
Bev reminded me a lot of a narcissistic relative of mine, who I can absolutely see doing what Bev did. This series hit hard, and I cried a lot. Needed a heck of a pallet cleanser after I finished it.

I mean, Paul was definitely bad. But he wasn't anywhere near as bad as Beth. Paul was blinded to the reality of what he was doing by his desire to help others. Beth never wanted to help others.

she was definitely more easy to dislike, but I feel like Paul’s willful ignorance to the damage he was causing is just as bad as Bev’s constant power trip. idk, some people seem to sympathize with his intentions-and it probably helps that he was handsome and charismatic-but to me he just gave cult leader energy 🤢
He was a true believer in his own word, she was just looking for a way to justify herself. Ignorance versus evil.
Ever heard of The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions? Even if Paul thought he was doing it overall for the good of everyone, he still did a lot of bad things and his willful ignorance cost their lives.
I loved this show and i especially found it interesting when Paul was shot right before everyone started transforming. It seemed meaningless because he could just come right back to life, but the fact that he wasn't there to talk everyone through the madness with his grand religious reassuring tone made all the chaos possible. And also proved that even though Bev sees herself as as much of a leader as Paul, she doesn't know how to act the role at all.
He also came back to his common senses after being shot in the head, guess thats all it took
Bev who believed herself to be the most loved by god was scared of death. A true believe would embrace it like the rest of the town.
Also I thought when the girl said she could feel her legs was a sign that the monster died, so his power no longer worked.
My wife and I recently suffered a miscarriage and the scene when they discuss what happens when you die had me in absolute tears for over an hour. This was such a good story.
My wife and I have been there. I’m truly sorry for your loss. Yeah, that part got me. Also, the part where Erin mourns with Riley, that was like a flashback. Having been in Riley’s shoes, I totally get that feeling of helplessness he had. He wanted to do more than listen and comfort, and couldn’t.

The characters were so compelling and well written. Their monologues so charged and deep. This exploration on religion, and the self relationship with it was amazing.
Flanagan really did not cut corners including all the types is believers.
Bev ending was so satisfactory. Facing judgement, desperate, alone and in fear.
Very satisfied with this series overall.
I can only recommend Atheist-Channels,
seeing how people really wanna dive into Topic-of-Religion this without Bias or Screaming-at-each-other.
Using Logic on the bible and the concepts of God seperately from all Holy Texts is important and i won’t spoil the Trend that this shows. C’mon, see for yourself.

As sad as it was, this was such a beautifully written story, with such a great theme. There's no judgement or criticisms of different beliefs/religions. Christian, Muslim, Atheist. None of those beliefs are bad or wrong. What is wrong is using your beliefs to claim superiority or authority over others; or to justify causing harm. In the end, no matter what happens in life or after death, what matters is to know we are not alone; and we are loved. Do your best to show support and acceptance towards others. Otherwise, you'll end up like Bev. Alone in the end.
Both actors who played John and Bev got some serious acting chops. They are amazing!
Honestly this was by far my favorite vampire story. I was beyond impressed and more than surprised that they were able to hit the level they did in both horror suspense story characterization and even being able to use this is a vehicle to examine faith versus fanaticism. Can I recommend this movie/series highly enough. My only regret is that I can’t watch it for the first time again. This is how vampires are supposed to be done
Very good TV show
Its a realistic way of doing vampires and I absolutely love it but I also love Castlevania, if you are into animation (even if you are not) I strongly reccomend watching the series it is amazing.
An interesting thing I thought, was Father Pruitt encountered the “angel” while he was in a very confused state of dementia, and therefore completely misinterpreted what was happening around him. But since the blood should’ve healed any ailments including a clouded mind, like Mildred, it must’ve been Pruitt who convinced himself of what was happening as being a holy thing. But also, perhaps even though his mind was healed, the initial false impression of it being a holy experience is still there and is hard for him to move past to admit what is actually happening
As I watched this with my girlfriend I kept saying whoever wrote this is going for the gold medal with the dialogues and monologues. The actors delivered so well that I didn’t care about the story when these moments came about. In the grand scheme it works out and is honestly worth an immediate rewatch.
One cool detail i noticed watching this series is that after they decide to do the masses at night, the red light present in the back of the church is turned off. That light is used to represent the presence of Christ in God's house. Catholic school taught me this and how to hit a bong, fun times.

In the Triduum Sacrum, the eternal light on the tabernacle is extinguished on Maundy Thursday after the transfer of the ciborium to its temporary storage location after the celebration of the Last Supper. Its only re-lit for the glory on Easter Vigil, as the tabernacle is temporarily empty.
I don’t remember the actual timeline, but the light being extinguished actually does make sense when you consider that Easter is in the last episode (if I remember correctly)
Having seen Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, I was able to recognize some of the same actors. After realizing the actors were aged with makeup and prosthetics, it was obvious what they had planned for those characters.
bly manor was kinda dull tbh. hill house is his best imo as it did alot of things really well
this show however was kinda boring to me. most monologues felt pointless and went on for too long
especially in that episode where theyre talking about what happens after they die. the single fact that its 2 monologues back to back. and both seemed like some edgy teenager wrote them.

Actually the makeup was pretty shitty. I didn't watch hill house or bly manor, but the fact that at least Mildred actress was made into an old lady artificially was obvious from episode 1. Plus the trailer was full of small spoilers here and there. Plus the guy moving a trunk with someone inside was like a portrayal of Stoker's Dracula episode. Overall me and my wife made a wild guess that there were vampires and it was correct guess lol. This didn't make the story worse though, I mean this story is not based on mystery. As even without all that spoilers - everything becomes pretty clear after episode 3 when Pruitt tells about his journey in the Holy Land

For someone who doesn't follow Christianity, it was confusing at some parts. I understood the betrayal, Judas, resurrection talk because it's basic 101, but other deeper meanings were confusing like what the end all meant. You explained a lot that I couldn't grasp.
Right?!? Like I went to a catholic school so my knowledge was decent enough but I am from a non Christian country so many things were not clear to me.
Which part exactly? I sort of figured it just meant that they were all worshipping a vampire. They all turned into vampires and died when the sun came out. They were all tricked into following a being that is surely a vampire, because someone they looked at as a Messiah, or at lest high up in the ranking of their religion told them so. Everyone but Bev seemed to reconnect with their faith in the end. I took that as Bev really never cared about her faith. She used it as a way to further her wealth and to keep herself above others.
Former Catholic here! Huge Catholic Family, went to Catholic school, went to Mass every Sunday the whole deal! This movie spoke to me on such a deep level. It represented a lot of the sadness I felt when I finally left the church. It was my entire community and was mostly filled with good people wanting to do the right thing. I am curious how non Catholics feel about it. Because Flannigan did such an amazing job of showing religious doubt and religious dedication.

I think Hassan's struggle to explain God to his son was very well written.
Also, the scene in the church when everybody was choking and dying made me feel like I was actually at Jonestown and probably legit traumatized me. Like I can't even explain how uncomfortable and horrified and scared I felt at that one scene.
The scene where they realise they sent away the ferry and couldn't get off the island was the moment I felt real shivers

Mike Flanagan is my new favorite horror creator. Everything he’s done has been amazing IMO. Hill House is still my favorite though.

Hamish as Father Paul made the monologues so good (Idk the proper term, preaching?) I felt myself getting convinced on his way of thinking, even after seeing "the angel" AND the fact I'm very skeptical whenever someone is overconfident they are right.
And the actress that played Bev (I forgot her name) was super good, it takes talent to be so sanctimonious, self righteous and eventually hipocritical, all while seeming like a real person, not a stereotypical villain, who's bad for being bad.
The charisma was overwhelming. I haven’t been to church in almost 2 years and the way he preached made me want to go back if I could find someone like him lol great acting honestly
I just finished watching this. And i cried on so many scenes. Also, the speech Leezy gave about forgiving the man who shot her really softened my heart. I cried. I cried when Riley died and said he always loved Erin. I cried when the priest revealed he did all he did because of the love he still had for the dementia woman and their daughter. #sighs...I am absolutely going to watch this series again. I give it a 5 star💯
I enjoyed the series immensely. As someone who was raised Christian but has recently transitioned into what I would call a "hopeful agnostic", Father Paul and Riley's conversations really hit home. Hamish Linklater as Father Paul is one of the best casting I've ever seen.

This is my favorite Netflix collaboration for sure. Yes, I loved Mike Flanagan's other Netflix collabs but this was just...fantastic. I have watched it fully through 2 times now. Riley is such an amazing character; he's up - makes tons of money, turns to partying, and it's all gone in 1 bad decision. SO now he's at his lowest point and he's just "existing/taking up space". Then he gets to give this HUGE GIFT to the world...actually having Erin and the others save the world from the "Crock Pot" inhabitants. It's such a beautiful character journey.
This miniseries is so deep in very many ways. Got me thinking a lot of things like: Is that really how angels look like, between Riley and Erin, who was right about what happens when we die, was the Sheriff right when he said that Christianity has been altered over the years by priests and popes..... and so many more questions. Flanagan is truly a genius at his work.
Other things i cant tell But, the sheriff was 100 percent right that bible has been changed multiple times over the years. And diff versions of bibles are read in different churches
Both were right. Everyone experiences a different outcome of eternity based off of their origins, their thoughts, where they originated from prior to this incarnation.

Just wanna share that the Vatican actually has high standards when it comes to verifying a miracle. Just like sarah said, numerous tests is a must in order to know if it was an actual miracle or a rare case of natural healing from the body. From what I can remember, they also need to know which saint/catholic figure u prayed to in order to attribute the miracle to them.
I don't think that they were THAT high when they beatified Theresa, just sayin.

Growing up Catholic and going to a Catholic university, this show triggered me in all the best ways possible. Lol especially Bev’s character, it reminded me of all the people like her who would say and do hateful things to me because I was different. This show is awesome. It really tackled some serious issues.
This whole “Haunting” anthology on Netflix have all been top tier. I thought hill house couldn’t be topped, then I loved bly and was sure for real this time that’s as good as they do and no shit I think this one is my favorite hahah. Love it, AHS has really lost its touch so I’m glad these are happening. Half the fun is seeing how the actors in these change to different roles, missed Vicki P in this one tho
this series has so many beautifully emotional moments. My favorite is when Erin and Riley both say what they think will happen after they die. One from an Athiest pov and other Christian. and both made me cry with how incredibly beautiful both takes were.
The priest boy with the hanging hair played his role of vampire so well, he just naturally looked unsettling with the hair covering his eyes and it all jist played perfectly

idk why but when critiquing media, oldschool insults like “dummy” and “dork” and “peabrain” are so much funnier than actual swears. especially the way flix says “dummy”. it just makes murderers and whatnot sound like silly children who did an oopsie.
to me, the amazing thing about this show was its incredible attention to detail. there are SO MANY direct references and subtle foreshadowing bits. in the 1st episode, father paul is wearing white/gold christmas day robes instead of the green ordinary time robes (bc he has been newly re/born). father paul meets the "angel" in a cave, much like how muhammad the prophet met the angel gabriel in a cave. and at the end of the show, i took the 2 kids being the only ones left alive and floating on a boat as a reference to noah and the ark.
the Repressed Catholic Childhood was v strong in the overall feel of this show, so as someone who was also raised that way, i totally understood what mike flanagan was trying to get at lol
What jumped out at me were the red robes that Fr. Paul wore on Easter. White/gold robes are always worn. When he stood before the the congregation, I knew something bloody was about to go down.
I've seen some comments in places calling Riley weak and a coward...
Riley went a full 24 hours without killing anyone, in fact probably more like 40 hours from when he got kiilled/turned to the sunrise that ended him. In that time he was around numerous people but nothing..... The towns people, including his parents were only turned for a few hours overall and only his parents resisted but that was then, after another day of hunger probably not. The rest of the town never lasted 5 minutes, hell the mother (wife of the mayor) almost went after her daughter immediately, the alter boy killed his mom etc. Riley had more strength than anyone on the island, or just as much and that's the point, he was an addict and knew immediately what giving in would turn him into. And anyone who doubts that then try this, don't eat for 24 hours, then look in the fridge and watch cooking vids on CZcams and continue not to eat for another 24 hours after that, then after all that time and temptation see what you'd be willing to eat when you actually feel what real starvation is...

At the beginning of his story, Hassan says he was 21 & in his dorm room when the towers went down. His career in law enforcement started _after_ 9/11 because he wanted to "protect this country." Episode 6 at 23:30, if anyone reading this wants to replay the scene.

it started out slow but I liked it. It had a strangely somewhat unique twist on vampires coming from religion. What I dont get is why he thought it was an angel when it clearly looks more demonic.
Biblically accurate angels looks way worse and scarier than that vampire in the series.
Demons and angels are the same species, 1/3 of them got cast out of heaven with the most beautiful Lucifer morning star aka satan.
because he’s an old, extremely devout priest with dementia who’d never left the island before that trip. the point is paul/pruitt is only capable of interpreting it as an angel because he sees everything through the same, unquestioned, extremely religious lens

I watched this in a super vulnerable state getting clean off fentanyl. It hit me HARD. Cried a lot. I can honestly say this is my favorite show of all time. Really changed my perspective
I know exactly what you're talking about back the vulnerability of getting clean can catch you off guard at any moment and it sucks because you never know what will cause you to finally start bringing out all them emotions. I hope this show does the same for me
My favorite scene was the one where the crippled kid confronted the town drunk. Frigging tearsville in my room.
I think the “Angel” died because the girl got her healing from the communion and the communion was the vampires blood so when he died it took away her ability to walk. Hence why the kids were happy.

As much as how slow-paced this series may have been, the dialogues just compels you into sitting and watching for hours without being bored. Brilliant series! I kinda felt emotional in the ending.

When I saw the “angel” get the curious fellow in the abandoned house it really hooked me in. I needed to see what that thing actually looked like.
I always took the girl saying she can’t feel her legs as a sign the winged vampire died. If the head vampire dies, anyone affected by it is freed
one issue I had with this is that none of the 'turned' needed to die, you could easily use some wood planks to create some makeshift shelter to hide from the sun for the day
That is what makes it so impactful. They didn't have to die, they WANTED to die. It was their one and only chance to practice what they claimed to preach and believe in; sacrifice for the greater good.

an amazing retelling of a vampire horror story 👌 doesn’t rely on cheap jumpscares. the story, dialogue, atmosphere, eerie-ness and creepiness of it all just carries the horror.

This always reminded me of the idea that the road to hell is paved by good intensions. The angel/vampire might have known in a way what the priest might do, even felt it after feeding on him, and so allowed him to bring it back to the town so it could spread it's kind. Many ways it is the idea that even evil acts can be justified if the ends improve the standing of good.
I suspect the angel/vampire had done something similar in the past. Perhaps why it was found in an abandoned temple. Perhaps the same plague was prevented and he was trapped there on purpose. So It knew what it was doing because it had tried to do it in the past.

@@mariadocarmosobreira8323 i agree there was no noah and no ark, but at the same time there have been tons of floods/other massive weather events throughout the history of the earth, there are ocean fossils in the appalachian mountains, and every culture/religion has a flood myth. so floods, even The Flood, almost definitely did happen. whether people as we know them were around to witness it or just wrote it into their mythologies afterward is a separate question
