In A Dark Song a woman buys a house in the middle of nowhere and enlists a down on his luck occultist to help her perform a dangerous ritual. The story has surprising and high minded levels involving religious and philosophical ideas that makes things quite complex. There's a lot to unpack here regarding the ritual itself, the references, and of course the bonkers ending.

Also I'm pretty sure the bundle she lets go in the river is Solomon, not Jack. That actually made me wonder if it's meant to imply that Solomon was the one who killed Jack for a ritual. If you remember, when he was talking to her saying "look at us two," she replies "it isn't that weird" and gives him a look. Her pushing him out into the lake to give him a proper burial is her forgiving him for what he did.

      @hadriananton9762 Před 2 lety +14

@@thomas8552 There definitely isn’t a gnostic connection to the Hagia Sophia since that title is an orthodox theological title of Jesus along with Logos. In closer inspection however, the Hagia Sophia refers to the earth-dwelling energies of God, personified in the incarnate Jesus, by which we can experience the divine and achieve theosis. In this sense, Jesus is the Holy Wisdom of God which illuminates and redeems the human soul through the Holy Spirit, giving it a place in the divine Kingdom of Heaven. Though a strictly orthodox view, many similarities can be noted with the Pistis Sophia according to which Sophia is the syzygia of Christ and the essence of human souls which are redeemed by the Savior through Gnosis and returned to the Treasury of Light. I think the similarities between these two are the result of a common background in Greek philosophy. Also, I would be hesitant to describe gnostic Sophia as the “divine feminine” since that’s a new-age, dualistic and abstract term which fails to capture the immanent and lesser nature of Sophia. Nevertheless, I think the names of the two mains reflects Solomon’s god-given wisdom as well as the book “Wisdom of Solomon” which contains much talk of holy wisdom, eschatology, good and evil, all key themes in the esoteric background of the movie

I remember I was shocked after finding out that the Abramelin ritual is an actual ritual people do to try and get in direct contact with their guardian angel (not many though - when Aleister Crowley did it, it reportedly hadn't been performed in centuries). Sounds like hell. Even if you don't believe in the supernatural the ritual itself is rough. I see some confusion in the comments about the demon summoning. Summoning demons is done on purpose because it's a dark magic ritual that requires you to overcome the 12 biggest baddies in hell (including Lucifer). Supposedly, if you can't bind them then you become possessed or die. Personally, I don't believe in magic, but I still don't know why anyone would really want to risk it lol

One thing I'm confused by, but maybe there's something in the movie itself that clarifies this. When Solomon pins her to the table and insists she tells the truth, she admits that she didn't want her son back, she wanted vengeance on the teen hooligans who murdered Jack doing their own satanic ritual.
But then after he's stabbed, and she talks about her son some more, she says that he was taken from daycare one day, but they never found the body or tied it to anyone being responsible. The case was closed after three years, and Jake was tragically forgotten. So how did she know about the teen hooligans? Or, if that was another lie, why would she still be lying at that point, and who was she actually trying to get vengeance against?
I feel like I'm missing something, so if there's something in the movie that clarifies this, I'd appreciate the assist.

In essence this is what ritual is about. It evokes our “demons” and forces them to conform to our Will. In occultism your PTSD would be given a name, evoked into the triangle. Made to swear allegiance to you on your sword, Then invoked into your body under your complete control. As a result your PTSD subsides and your regain control of your life. PTSD is a vague concept - give it a form and a voice (demon) within ritual and you can define, appreciate and control it. Cured.

I was listening to this while driving, so I didn't see the visuals and just heard the story. The first thing I noticed was their names. Solomon is a derivative of the Hebrew word "Shalom", meaning peace or Peaceful One. Joseph is derived from the Hebrew word Yosef, meaning "God will add" or "God will increase". So, "God will increase peace".
And that's exactly the gift Solomon ended up giving her (I'll have to watch the movie to see if he got his).
Sophia is a Greek word meaning Wisdom. It's actually more than a name - it's kind of an entity, embodying wisdom and skill. Add to that that King Solomon was basically the supreme king of wisdom in the Old Testament, and you've got a lot riding on the concept of wisdom.
I went ahead and looked up the name Howard, since they clearly thought out these names. It's derived from an old Normandy/Germanic word, Hugihard, meaning "Heart-brave".
They kinda spelled out the whole movie, just in their names. Now I want to watch this movie just for all the spiritual concepts they covered.

This is only tangentially related but this movie put my thoughts in this direction. Even as an atheist myself I have an immense respect for the kind of people who can perform these sorts of religious or spiritual rituals and meditations based only on faith, like those months you see that basically mummified themselves alive. I almost envy the security and calm that that sort of certainty and will must provide for you, even if I've never seen whatever people like that saw that let's them look into the dark and see something larger in it.

This movie looks terrifying. Everyone has that "one thing" which they fear most, and demons is mine. Will have to muster up the courage to check this film out. I found out about the movie "Southbound" through your channel, which was definitely one of my favorite horror flicks of the past 5 years. Up there with Mandy and The Lighthouse. Cheers, and thanks for a super cool channel.

i'm a little confused on one aspect- why did she always see her son holding the hand of an old lady? Is it supposed to imply something about how he died or maybe where he is in the after life?

This movie is FANTASTIC! I think about it a lot because it has one of the scariest scenes in a horror movie I’ve personally ever seen: when the little boy spirit at the door confessed that it’s not really her son and he’s just trying to scare her. I have goosebumps just thinking about it.

For me that was a little bit nice moment because the demon was kinda honest with her and it just makes closer, things get clearer and so less scary.

You need to do a ending explained for Everything Everywhere All At Once, it’s such a good movie and can get confusing at times

Isn’t it probably Solomon’s body, that she pushes into the lake/swamp? Of course the overarching symbolism is that she’s made peace with her son’s death, but.. Solomon’s (real) body had to go somewhere!

You should do "Hellbender" on Shudder and if you like that one check out "The Deeper You Dig" as well.

I absolutely love this movie. It is an intelligent movie, but doesnt come off presumptuous. Its also really deep from emotional, psychological, and religious stand points. And of course the process of grieving.
