24 Hours with Female Marines in NYC: Fleet Week

  • NYC Fleet Week - an annual event where active duty Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen descend upon the city to rub elbows with the public and blow off some steam.
But to a lot of civilians, the image of ‘Fleet Week’ has been shaped by TV shows like “Sex in the City” - a kind of holiday where men in uniform are rewarded with free drinks and women throwing themselves at them.
But how true is that narrative when talking about female service members? What do they want out of Fleet Week? Last year, Vice’s Erica Matson was invited aboard the USS Arlington to spend 24 with a group of female Marines as they experienced Fleet Week for the first time.
CORRECTION: at 3:11, we state that "the military civilian divide is at an all time low", which is incorrect -- according to the United States DOD, the military-civilian divide is at an all time high. We regret the error.

What most civilians don't understand is that the military doesn't start wars, politicians do and specifically career politicians. As long as career politicians are allowed to remain in positions of power, the military will be needed.

I hear lots of negative comments about politicians.. which I totally understand but what are the options folks? Should we all just have no co-ordination? Should we just let every state run things the way they want, without any coordination between states. Do people think that there is no politics in the military, or in any organization where there are more than two people? And the distrust of career politicians... ya Trump, how's that working out for you? Let's stop career military.. just give folks guns and let them have at it.

Even in peacetime without conflict, there will always be a need for a military. HADR roles for environmental catastrophes for starters. Look at the scale required too assist like Californian fires earthquakes, Hurricanes, floods etc across Usa.
Mass migration due to climate change will put a greater strain on your borders than you ever experienced in history too. Domestic terrorism has called on explosive experts, intelligence from the military as does continued Army ,Navy, Air force Navy assist to stop drug smugglers abroad.

There was no chance that they were going to do that. They were clearly hand-picked by their command to be interviewed by the press. The giveaway was the part at 9:15 where the lieutenant was talking about how her dad -- an Army veteran -- was unenthusiastic about his daughter joining the Marines. The reporter asked why, and the obvious answer is that her dad was afraid that his daughter would get sexually assaulted. She was clearly pretending when she said she didn't know why her dad was unenthusiastic about her joining, and then she said something really vague instead. She'll definitely get a NAM for that one.

I did have some guys during my single years when I was stationed overseas ask for a hug when they were drunk because they didn't remember the last time they felt the touch of a woman. I was Navy (1967-71). The ship i was on carried 500 Marines everyplace it went. We pulled into St. Martin as a four day liberty port with our full compliment. I can say this, if your in the military, you haven't experienced a REAL liberty unless you have spent it with the Marines. Friendliest bunch of guys i ever met. We were thrown out of two casino hotel's (one on the Dutch side of the island and the other on the French), one brothel (french side), wrecked about a half dozen of those little cars they warned us NOT to rent, stuck the Dept. of Armed Forces with a HUGE bill for hospital costs and property damage and we were politely asked to leave port and not come back, by both the French and the Dutch that very first night.
Naturally, we spent the next 3 days, us (ships crew) doing non-stop ships drills and the Marines doing non-stop physical drills. Well worth it for the great memory if nothing more. Of course, this was back in the old days when women weren't allowed on ships.
