- This is the first Big Ideas Lecture I completed, back in 2002. I read a book for very young children by Jack Kent called "There's no Such Thing as a Dragon" to a group of University of Toronto alumni (most over 65). I explained what it meant: Pay attention -- or else.

This quote really hit me hard. I need to confront and defeat my dragons if I'm to establish the meaningful, successful life that I desire. It won't be easy, but it'll be worth it.

@@aWomanFreed Overcame a chronic addiction and feelings of suicide, got myself a secure job, made some life-long friends and found myself a wonderful partner. Still have a long way to go until the life I desire is seen to its absolute end, but I've made considerable progress mentally and circumstantially since I made my original comment.
Rewatching this since my partner has taken an early interest in Peterson. :)

I feel like every sentence is a cliff hanger to the next, each word feels carefully selected to express MOST meaning. Amazing, thank you.
He often says that he rewrote every sentence in Maps of meaning like 50 times. He also likes to say that writing is formalized thinking and also that. He centers his speech around the goal of telling the truth in a pragmatic manner and he was a teacher, and a therapist. No wonder he got good at talking to people.

It's an evolution consideration.
We have the instructions to act in a certain way ingrained in us even more deeply than consciousness. If the instructions were bad, all with the instinct to act them out would have died off and the instinct with them.
But the instinct is still here - that proves it's an asset to survival and success in this world, not a detriment.
Another way to put it, I hope correctly, is that a conscious knowledge of our material reality is not sufficient to explain our behavior, our experiences, our nature and any meaningful purpose we might find within the world. The "world of objects" is a dead and incomplete reduction of reality.
my thoughts after just watching now, months after your question are as follows: people tend to write down into stories their wisdom and shared experiences in one form or another. otherwise you'd have a boring shopping list (and don't get me wrong, lists and data do exist in plenty) but a boring shopping list of data makes for a horrible story. so the lesson and shared wisdom in this children's book (and i presume written by an adult, correct me if i'm wrong) is to not ignore what a dragon represents, the unexpected. wisdom by it's very nature is knowledge through your own experiences rather than data gathered and transferred towards others. the moral and excitement of this story comes from gathering your own data, testing out your own limits, and to be very very very wary of ignoring the things you find yourself ignorant to.

Not everyone so much as knows their fathers as you've assumed, and many of us have truly irreparable relationships with our fathers (victims of severe abuse, incest, etc - because we do exist, and there are more of us than most good people would care to imagine). We all need strong male role models, particularly those of us who never had such an important figure in our formative years. We're not literally sitting here imagining that he's our dad, you're the one with the twisted conclusions.

I ran across you by accident and decided to give your lecture a listen. I have always had trouble facing problems in life because I was/am to scared of the outcome...always putting things off instead of just facing my fears. But you are right... if I continue to cast a blind eye to the troubling aspects of my life they will go from being minor to a major issue. So I'm going to slay the dragon before it gets to big to control it! And I will most likely watch this lecture several times more when I deem it necessary to remind me why its important to face my problems and conquer! I absolutely enjoyed this video...thank you Dr. Peterson!

If it so happens that the dragon got to big. It helps if you cut it into pieces and slay those pieces one by one: ie if the problem is too big, devide it into smaller steps you can take more easily. And don't forget to rewards yourself when you have won a battle. Positive reinforcement! I treat myself to my favorite drink everytime I stook a step and I'm now somewhere between the goal I'm working towards and the chaos I came from by simply taking one step at a time.

Linda Irene Hi Linda. He is good isn't he - in the purist sense of the word 'good.' You would like (though I presume by now you've probably seen them) Peterson's lectures on the psychological analysis of the Biblical stories. Fascinating stuff. What he says on potentiality and moving forward towards a transcendent ideal seem to echo our current understanding of quantum field theory: the Universe requires consciousness as an integral feature of what we might call existential 'reality'. Even though - evidentially - nothing 'out there' actually 'exists' !
His audience got younger as he got older lol. Great lecture Professor.

On one hand I'm thrilled that people like this exist who are both brilliant and compassionate, on the other hand I'm disappointed that it's so rare that a person like this gets the recognition and power to influence they deserve. Imagine this man being the thinking cap behind the political sphere in our times. Oh the places we'd go.

...according precisely with what JPsays here: Where we go doesnt depend on the personal qualities of the people in power but in every individual taking responsibility for his/her own actions. Like Solzhenitsin did. So dont worry about JP being recognized. It doesnt matter. Just attend to the core of the message and everything would be all right.

I'm watching in July of 2017 and it made me chuckle to hear Peterson say, "video rental".
Im watching this in 2020 and i didnt chuckle as much. U can rent videos still on google play store and vudu and even cable television. Its digital but its still a rental.....
This is, by far, the most amazing lecture I've ever encountered in the 21st century.
You know it´s about to get old school when JP breaks out the overhead. Really enjoyed the lecture. This is super fascinating to me.

It took me something like 8 years to figure out that there was a dragon disturbing my life. For eight years I had dreams about someone from (what I thought) was my past. Nightmares two or three times a week, sometimes more often. Anger became my daily routine, sadness too. I lived in a fear that I might meet that person one day. I was hiding and trying not to get any information about her. Eight long years. Then I came across JBP and once he stated: if there are memories longer than 18 months that still make you cry, you need to go back and slay the dragon. So I decided to meet her face to face. She agreed and we talked for five hours. Coming back home I felt relief and peace. Now it's way, way better. The dragon is gone, sadness, fear as well. If only I knew it long time ago my life would be much better.

For the first time in my life I had to pause a CZcams video just to have the time to reflect on what's being sad. The thought about combat with the unknown goes deep. That says something good about what CZcams is becoming thanks to the people like mr. Peterson. I'm glad.

Mitch Wilkins Yeah. I've uncovered quite a few dragons on my own. I've realized that my materialistic way of life has been set up for me by my parents. Also, the problem I've been avoiding by staying at their house for so long: I stay for stability even though I'm miserable here. I can't ignore it any longer. My previous goals were based on going to college and getting a good paying career in something I am only mildly interested in. Now I am working towards moving out and adventuring, not going to live the way my father does, making himself miserable by doing all he can to get a big house to put more things in it and getting taken advantage of by his "good" job and his overrated work ethic (I think work ethic can be too much if it's fatally affecting your health). Or doing things like marrying a psycho bitch that you hate just so you can have the status of being married. I am trying to detach from those types of things. I'm trying to look closely at not only my own life, but those around me for the dragons. It is leading me in a good direction. I now feel like I have a mission and a purpose for living, at least more than "get good job, live comfortably". I honestly don't think that the good job would make me comfortable anyways. The chairs suck.

I had a dream once where there was a giant golden shimmering snake. Though it was beautiful it was mindless. Just raw power. In the dream, God showed up and said "if you don't learn how to work with the snake and use it, it will kill you" I shrugged it off as a nightmare but this lecture is making me think maybe there was something to it.

I had a dream where everything was black except for an enormous nearly-black dark grey serpent that took up the entire sea. It was both in the sea and it was the sea. There was a small man made of light that was riding on the coils of the serpent successfully. The man was like Jesus but it was me also. Then years later I found Jordan's material and was able to interpret it.

This man speaks hard yet simple truths, we ourselves know but have to rediscover due to our own ignorance of the world.
I watched all these videos before going to work in Mexico city as an immigration attorney, shortly after graduation. I did not know it was so damn literal and did not get it at that time as I do now. I am in the middle of a fantastic but realistic journey and these videos and books related to such topics became a useful source. Thank you Mr. Peterson, you are a remarkable man of our time.
At around 54:20, Peterson talks about getting a piece of the dragon and using it for good purpose. I think this is profoundly true, and the same has been said by none other than CS Lewis at the end of "A Pilgrim's Regress":

I first watched this and all of his lectures in the fall of 2016. Now revisiting it I am even more convinced that people who think that Jordan Peterson is a problem are absolutely insane.
When I thought about the statement, "Children don't like disorder, because their realm of competence is very limited," an instantaneous objection was: "But kids make messes all the time, and don't clean them up!"
But then I remembered that when I was a kid, the mess was things exactly how I left them. I remember being a little confused when my parents asked me to clean up the lego and the discarded clothes, "Where else would they go?" The mess was what I knew. It was its own sort of order.
I tried convincing my parents for years (especially the teenage years) that my room was organized chaos 🙂

Dr. Peterson I would suggest you look up the recent horror hit The Babadook. The reason that movie has been such a hit at such a primal level in so many audiences is because it was a horrifying retelling of the Billy and the Dragon story imo. You'd love it.

I struggle a lot with this. I have for a long time. I get so scared and feel overwhelmed when I think of all my "dragons". I have tried many different routes to change, and I have periods of change and hope, but right now I'm just stuck, miserably in my own fear. I can think of solutions to a lot of them, but I just can't act them out most of the time. Today is one of those days. I know exactly what I need to be doing, but I can't get going. It all feels like im doing it for someone else. That someone is demanding this of me and that I just can't obey anymore.

Found Jordans lectures yesterday and listened to them 2 hrs before bed, and then couldn't sleep all night with a horrible headache. It did however kill my dreaming phase and get me thinking about my future for the first time. The dragon story is just stupidly simple and oh so accurate.

Because hes speaking in contemporary terms. I have the same problems with plato. I can read it obviously but i understand the material much better when i translate what i think hes trying to say in contemporary terms. I have a journal just for that which is what petersen said he had for Jung when he was first studying
I still have a vivid memory of a nightmare I used to have... I was about 5, of an actual dragon on this sort of circular island surrounded by cliffs with no where to go. I remember several weird nightmares, one with aliens, one with someone chasing me down. These all repeated enough to remember vividly. I'm 30 now, I haven't had a nightmare since I was probably 16. On a rare occasion I'll have a weird dream of zombies, or people trying to kill me except every time I'm calm and unafraid, or at least not thinking about the fear because I need to focus on survival and the task at hand, and I destroy whatever is trying to destroy me, even when completely out numbered. And I wake up refreshed lol, another night of kicking ass.
That's because you grew up and became dangerous yourself. People tend to confuse innocence with virtue, but _real_ virtue is having power and still choosing to make things better. We face our fears by internalizing them, to a certain extent - claiming a piece of the dragons we slay, so to speak.
Amazing to see how clear it is that back then Jordan was forming his theories and methods for the use of story telling in his applied practice so concretely. This video here really helps us understand why Jordan Peterson uses story as a natural means to transmit his knowledge into us

This lecture helped me a great deal conceptualizing how to work with clients who see themselves as fully conscious of their motivations. we need to resurrect the notion of the shadow and the dragon, chaos, etc. Your lectures assist so well with this. If we lose the idea we only see ourselves in part, we get a little too cocky - common in the materialist culture. Thanks so much! You are my lifeline right now - these lectures are reawakening old useful ideas that were once so foundational for me, but seem to have vanished from the culture in recent years.

I'm not happy with that interpretation. Right now somewhere in Somalia or Syria or wherever there is a small child, six years old, starving to death. In what possible way can I say that the child is responsible for the world it finds itself in? In what possible way can I say that the child has the ability to overcome those problems by its own efforts? JP seems to be saying that Solzhenitsyn, by taking responsibility for his own situation, helped to bring about the fall of the USSR. Solzhenitsyn could easily have been one of the many thousands he shared his terrible experiences with, who did not survive. I say that it is very romantic and dramatic to suppose there is a link, but scrutiny doesn't support it. This is "The Secret" all over again, that if you want something badly enough you will get it. Again I say, tell that starving child that it is his or own fault for starving because of not wanting food badly enough.
Most of the rest of the talk is pretty good. JP gives us a context for understanding. If we see a whole lot of people in a field doing apparently random things, we can't interpret it. Then someone will tell us, "The're playing football and the objective is to get the ball in the net," or "They are doing Tai Chi, fighting an invisible enemy," or "They are farmworkers tending to the plants." Given that context we say "A-ha!" and we can start to make sense of it. Just a word or two in the right place can transform the way we see the world.
This is so powerful it can bring you to tears.

I want to meet Jordan Peterson one day. Reading his book and listening to his lectures changed the path of my life and quite possibly saved me from a mid life crisis by changing that path.
Once he said,”when you go to the video store...” I realize how much I miss being out and interacting with people and also kinda miss going out and picking out videos...ah the simple things😪
This video should have at least 3 million views. The fact that it doesn't speaks loud and clear about a world that is afraid of looking at their problems.

I'm no Philosopher or intellectual, I just fix cars, but Dr.Petersons podcasts and CZcams videos have taken over my Bluetooth headphones while I work, for most of the last month or so. This one though actually had me laughing out loud in the workshop. What a brilliant way to get a point across. Who'd have thought philosophy could be so entertaining?
In a world coming apart at the seams, a sliver of light is piercing through the darkness of mankind's blindfold. If only more people could see his wisdom and learn what I have in little more than a month, the world would be a better place.
