  • This lecture describes the world as a place of action and value (as opposed to a place of objective things), and lays out the manner in which religious thinking is descriptive of that world. It provides a good introduction to Dr. Peterson's other lectures.

    Dr Peterson, I grew up in the Russian Orthodox Church and became disillusioned with religion because I felt like the people around me were more hurt by the ideologies than helped. I stopped identifying with this faith and moved on to other places researching many different philosophies. I went through many modes of thought, from nihilism to new age woo. At times I put down my search as wishful thinking or nastalgia to replace the religion I had lost faith in. You have offered the world a lens I have felt so deeply for a very long time but wasn't able to articulate it. Thank You. Your work is very important.

      Julia Nelson i feel similarly bc from what ive seen at times people still hide behind religion lets say Christianity vs actually take moments in the year to see how they are ignoring the suffering of people/ various groups. And sometimes, examples of inequity can be so clear that i wish pple found practical ways to mobilize or take a few meaningful actions to stand up for higher values other than just pertaining to their work, family, social groups or church. But perhaps we havent evolved as a society yet more in that direction. It is easy to say i go to church regularly versus practically live those values & equate the experience, value & suffering of another being with your own & do something in that cause. Overall hwr, i understand 'loving your neighbor as yourself' or 'loving a stranger as your brother' is easier said than done. At times religion / organized religion & the customs involved seem to take away from the activity of actually living out those values. Not to mention seems to keep people segregated & inactive versus actively seeking to improve society.

    This really has been one of the most memorable times of my life to witness this man. If the historians are any kind of people, I'm sure history will credit him with a shift in the hearts and minds of those who had previously had given up. He seems to be able to articulate with perfect precision a verbal cure to many of the intellectual woes of the world. I never thought I'd say that about a lecture but clearly, despite the infinite number of snares in the universe to get caught on, he's found the one absolutely right way to express himself.

    The Pinocchio analogy reminds me of a Kierkegaard passage;
    "When around one everything has become silent, solemn as a clear, starlit night, when the soul comes to be alone in the whole world, then before one there appears, not an extraordinary human being, but the eternal power itself, then the heavens seem to open, and the I chooses itself or, more correctly, receives itself. Then the soul has seen the highest, which no mortal eye can see and which can never be forgotten; then the personality receives the accolade of knighthood that ennobles it for an eternity. He does not become someone other than he was before, but he becomes himself. The consciousness integrates, and he is himself. Just as an heir, even if he were heir to the treasures of the whole world, does not possess them before he has come of age, so the richest personality is nothing before he has chosen himself; and on the other hand even what might be called the poorest personality is everything when he has chosen himself, for the greatness is not to be this or that but to be oneself, and every human being can be this if he so wills it."

    I've been watching Dr Peterson for a while now, and I think I could safely say I've probably clocked up about 50 hours of his talks and lectures. Amazing guy, he's the next level for me. However, I've never read anyone comment on how he moves his hands while he talks. Spellbinding movements at times - I rewind and watch some of his gestures over and over. I'd love to hear his take on it!

    Most of my life was chaos. I didn’t know who I was, where I had been, or where I was going. 4 years ago I found a Bible and my belief system brought order, purpose and structure to the past, present, and future. About 6 months ago I found Jordan Peterson and began being interested in Psychology and philosophy to make sense of things and it has been life changing. Theology and Jordan Peterson have given me order and every day I find myself bring order from chaos and it’s made me a better husband, father, and co worker.

    I really needed this lecture. Who am I, where am I, where do I want to go?
    One thought that came to me was it's better to be a pursuer of knowledge than an attainer of knowledge. This is a struggle against the structure of culture that will throw you out into the forest if you dare to challenge it. I can't go with the herd for a quiet life. I have been thrown out into the forest. And this was my moment of healing, that paying attention to what we don't know is more critical than sticking to what we already know. That about sums me and my life up.
    There is a lot to chew on for me. Thank you again

    Things I got from this:
    1. The meaning of life is basically to continually confront the unknown and turn chaos into order
    2. Femininity is that which selects, and women are attuned to infer value through actions
    3. To differentiate female thinking from male thinking (I'm just riffing here), men are attuned to infer value from form and function
    4. Back to point 2, there must be more than just action, as I've noticed women are generally better at designing a space or selecting clothes. I guess I would characterize it as things that fit together as a story. Perhaps this is what Dr Peterson means when he says women select men at the top of the dominance hierarchy (actions) and men who will stick around to raise a child (good fit)
    5. So, to be a successful man, you must confront chaos often, come out with a better mental map often, and be able to convey your experience in a way that fits with other's experience
    6. Summarizing how to be a successful woman is going to be much more difficult for me, as I have no frame of reference. Obviously, looking good and generally being nurturing will help attract more mates, but do you want more options or do you want the right option(s) faster? This thought experiment is hurting my head

    Joseph Campbell, initially, gave a rallying cry to me at a time when I was asking very big questions regarding the nature of life, my place in it and ultimately God. He opened the vast depths of religion and mythology to me in a way that has compounded through the years and paid vast dividends that I could never fully articulate. Jordan Peterson has taken on that mantel (Joseph Campbell’s) in a new and dynamic way, thankfully. He is a God send!
