  • This public lecture, recorded by TVO, describes the way the world is portrayed in deep stories, such as myths and religious representations. The world in such stories is a place of action, not a place of things, and it has its archetypal characters, positive and negative. Culture is typically represented as paternal, nature as maternal, and the individual as hero and adversary. Culture offers people security, but threatens them with tyranny. Nature offers renewal, but also brings death. The religious path of meaning allows people to negotiate this archetypal landscape.

Instead we treat children like children. I's like a tree whose leaves and roots are boxed in. One can speak to a child in a mature (though still clean) way and the child will speak and act more mature. Children should be allowed to grow, not protected from adversity in an absolute sense.

They call it my why revenge for their why stage lol because I always ask why do you think that.
These are the skills that should be taught around the age of 9-10 years of age in school. I dream of the day where we as a society let go of grades and actually teach basic math, reading and the rest is why, without a social justice warrior, nor a one religion is better thinking.

I have been thinking that psychology has failed us for several years until I heard Jordan Peterson. He is explaining the world and giving us a philosophy to live by using our religious traditions, philosophic traditions, history and science. I love how he criticizes the left and right and their ideologies, but at the same time points out how both sides are natural and necessary. This is crucial to healing the political war we are having today.

This is why they hate him. Plus I love the way he speaks in story form and dummies it down. It’s soft peddle of his questioning.

I've made every attempt I can think of to present the ideas and concepts Peterson articulates as something that would enhance and transform our relationship with one another. Ive thought each act out carefully, but for some reason every attempt to further the development of his understanding fail, and the problems we have between us that are unresolved remain in stasis, and our relationship is not what it could be. It's gripping my soul. To the people who are a bit older, what would you say it is that allowed you listen, learn, and implement the common ideas or suggestions JBP has been talking about? Have Any of you had a tough time talking about something because it was a child of yours who proposed a particular topic, and instead of listening, maybe you were compelled to explain it to them on the spot because you knew and understood enough about it already? That's the scenario I see reflected when speaking with my dad. Curious to know what your experiences have been, much thanks.

I had the equivalent of a spiritual experience about 50 times throughout his Maps Of Meaning lectures.. You could set your watch to the frequency with which he blew my mind. A truly gifted and innovative thinker who can draw profound truths from a jigsaw amalgam of seemingly disparate and abstract ideas. (and make them reasonably comprehensible to the layman as well)

    • @francescop1
      @francescop1 Před 7 lety +7

I had the same feeling! The funny thing is he mentions this experience in the first lecture, but it wasn't until the second time through that I realised exactly what he meant. I wrote down what he said exactly:
"sometimes you have an intuition of truth. it kind of goes click. It’s a pattern recognition mechanism. people generally have the feeling that when something like that happens, that something of truth has been revealed. A very common response I get from students is, i never told anyone anything they don’t already know. The reason for that is that like [carl] jung, I am drawing from archetypal structures. one of the cognitive phenomena that accompanies a spiritual awakening is the connection of many diverse phenomena into an overarching unity, a decrease in entropy. It’s a very powerful sensation. there’s other sources of what you might call spiritual experience, but that’s certainly one of them."
if you read ray kurzweil's how to create a mind you will get a further insight into this pattern recognising mechanism

Its funny in an academic world, that these days, is focused on producing mouthpiece activists and hack profs encouraging people to find their own "personal truths"
its refreshing to have someone like Dr Peterson … who concentrates on imparting universal and ineffable truths… which I would argue are the most important understandings we will ever possess..
Impossible to indoctrinate people with, you can only help people to realize these concepts themselves, arming them with tools which are indispensable to dissecting the human experience more fully.

Man, to think it took some SJW drama to find this youtube channel.
I just watched this entire thing and I was fascinated, there's a lot of things I recognise I wondered myself and then there's added to it, this is such clean cut honesty about how things just are and such. An interesting discussion going on here.
Also I know it was only very short, but when he started to talk about depression by the ending. Yeah I relate.
I suffered from depression and out of his four I fullfilled: No job, no friends and no relationship.
Jokingly I have liked to say that fantasy books and movies was my choice of drugs lol. Which you know, in a sense is true, those things actually gave me the satisfaction nothing else at the time could.
Thankfully, in complete opposit to real drugs, all this geekdomn, fantasy and books was restructive to me instead of destructive.
It gave me purpose, it inspired me to write a book which had a lot of feelings in it, it ensured I kept playing music as when I hear a movie theme I really like, I just gotta learn how ti play it! It made me go out to cons and meet people whom would later become my friends, it gave me something to look forward to in terms of new movies I could go to and be... Social with people!
I started to create cosplay, talk to all kinds of people having similar issues as me and acted like a open ear to many of them... It gave me purpose. And through this purpose and wishing to do even more, I fought myself up to get better.
I have said this many times, to a lot of people. If you are to get better, you have to want to get better, you have to decide for yourself. "I want to get better."
Because, if this decision is not made. There is nothing anyone can do, it all starts with yourself. You have to decide to get better yourself.
All a psykiatrist can really do is being a help to selfhelp, only you can make you get better when it comes to a lot of mental ilness's.
When people throw you a rope... You have to grab it, otherwise that rope is just useless. You have to decide... That you want to live, want to have a life.
And yes, it's hard, it's absolutely so very hard. But just think of all those things you could go watch and exsperience! So many wonderful things out there to explore and discover.
Now I study music therapy at UNI and of course, I have a heavy focus on how fictional stories and genneral communities centred around shared interests can be a way to deal with depression and various different mental illness's.
I still dress up and go to all the geeky movies with my friends, I still read all the Harry Potter books one every single year. I do this because it makes me happy.
I think I shall be adding this to the paper I am current writing, the thing about order and chaos.
Now I think about it, fantasy reading to me... Was something orderly in a very chaotic life at the time. I could always count on the escape of a book not having to deal with not having friends in elementary school.
So... a interest like this, and finding other with this shared interest can be a way to inject order into otherwise chaotic lives. I think I have made this argument before, I just havn't quite worded it like that.
I'm gonna do it now though... Stealy stealy.

Wow is right. This is so important to understand, especially now that humans can do so much damage. Thank-you for individuals who connect to and follow their passion and tell the truth about an individual life being important... So good to hear. Now I have to pay more attention.... Thank-you

This video is so awesome for laying his comments over any track, especially soulful deep music. I've been picking random samples and soundbites and playing them over my music. It's weird because you never know what he's going to say next but it always fits perfectly and gives the song a dimension of power that brings me to tears.

It's more than the fact that "Jordan Peterson knows things." What is powerful about his lectures is that much of it is stuff you already know, but hadn't been able to put into words or coherent thought. That's why when he says things, you nod and say "That's right! I always knew it, just couldn't say it and bring it into my world."

I think that's the "a-ha" moment when you really agree with someone, not when you say "you're right," but when you say, "That's right!" I know from my own experiences that I know I've really connected with someone when they say to something I've said, "That's right!" And, to your comment here, I say, "That's right!"
