Vocal Coach Reacts! Leprous! Slave! Live at the Rockefeller Music Hall! - Hudba
Their new album "Pitfalls" is amazing and by heaviness it is quite friendly to the people who are not so much into metal music. I am really hardly recommending to give it a listen. :)
New album was really good! Truly a “progressive” rock album. Einar does some amazing stuff. It’s a more introspective albums, which might be why he does so much “solo” singing. Instrumentals definitely compliment.
What did you enjoy??
Yes!!!
Pitfalls is a great album. Probably my album of the year, despite it not being very "metal." It's just so melodic, with Einar's vocals taking center stage, but also a lot of cool bass and drum work.
I absolutely love it too!!
Yeah, Pitfalls is an interesting album! It has a 'progressive pop' sound. I find it quite simple in terms of the sound, but quite complex in terms of technicality. 'Was an unexpected sound from Leprous but I am definitely enjoying it
What's interesting about this vocalist, Einar, is how much raw emotion he manages to convey through his voice without it affecting his technique. Both kind of work in sync, producing singing that feels beautiful and genuine.
This man has been struggling with depression for years, and music is how he deals with it. Which really shows.
He said in interviews he's a happy person in general, just doesn't come across in the music.
Yes!!!! At last!!!! Leprous!!!!! This is an amazing piece of music, especially this live version! Thanks a million for reacting to this Sam. I'm glad you went into this as blind as I did the first time I encountered them.. I was totally blown away. The drumming is simply phenomenal, no other word can describe it! And the vocals! 👌🏻
I love how people suggest you some really interesting singers and musicians ! Total discovery for me, and with Sam, it's always a good moment !!! Thank you Sam !!!!!!!
@I am the father I saw them live less than a year ago, it was amazing, one of the best days of my life
And yes, two drummers! Love their "off beat". The one to the right as you're viewing is a former member of the band and was invited back by the band for this concert.. even as a past member the band the friendship is still good.
You should check out The Flood from the same concert... I'll say no more!
This singer is a beast . His headvoices transitions and mix is flawless ! Also the band of my favorite drummer !
Love these guys, great vid. I think you'd really really dig TesseracT - Hexes feat. Martin Grech - Live in the Studio. Spectacular vocal permances
Leprous is my favorite band. So yeah definitely check more of them out!!
please listen to the studio version of distant bells. best vocals i've ever heard
This was one of the most enjoyable reaction videos I have seen, because it was more in depth. Thank you for this.
About Leprous and their music: Perhaps I'm projecting (I'm Danish), but I sense a very Scandinavian approach in their music and how they present themselves. It's minimalistic and free of unneccessary weight. They concentrate on the elements that are important to them and work with them. That becomes more apparent if you listen more songs. I think the peak of this was The Congregation album, and it's one of the reason why it's my favourite Leprous album, Coal and Pitfalls not far behind. Since you liked this song and it's from The Congregation, I'd recommend it to you.
subwaytosally18642 Interesting point...I’ve always felt that they’ve typically played what was need rather than wank around and show boat. I feel much of the progressive metal/rock in the US is like this (and other genres too). Even in their more “hectic” earlier albums, I have this feeling as well!
Thank you for that perspective ✌🏽
I'm fairly certain they are from Norway so the Scandinavian is definitely there!
Omg thank you so much for this, Sam!! I've been asking for it forever, you're a sweetheart. 😊
Leprous are from Norway and are commonly included in the progressive metal genre. They are extremely versatile, and yes they are all excellent musicians and super humble people. ❤
Also, I laughed super hard at the end of the video :p this is from their live DVD, that explains the production. :)
You can also react to Acquired Taste by them, live in the same show!
I've seen every comment come through, thank you for being so patient, but also reminding me! My memory is actually terrible, so once the pattern had emerged, I kind of had Leprous drummed into my brain! :)
I was going to put up the full video of me waiting but I thought people would get impatient, Spongebob to the rescue!
@@SSTVocalCoach You're so welcome! It's a pleasure to follow your work, you're extremely talented as a singer and your input as an artist is very interesting to watch. :) can't wait for some more! And also, wishes of a speedy recovery for you - no headbanging! :D
For God's sake, listen to "The Valley"
It's nice to see you did a reaction to this band, their vocalist really have a good voice and their music are really good as well 👌
I was so excited to see this pop up in my subscriptions! This performance is absolute magic! :D
Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius live from the BE DVD is another amazing progressive rock/metal singer with great range and technique
never heard this band before , i love it . sounds kind of like "what if muse made metal"
I was captivated from the first notes when I first came across that video a few days ago, and now I'm completely hooked on this band.
I adore how in LOVE you are with this by the end of the performance. You do great reacts Sam. Thank you.
I came across these guys last year & really like them!! It's all the drums & vocals for me!!
Einars voice is an instrument. Truly.
Not gonna lie, I've seen about 60 bands this year and the ones I am most grateful for seeing are
Leprous
Wheel - check out Vultures!!
Soen
Kadinja
Cellar Darling
Vola
Sleep Token.
They're all bloody friggin fantastic.
Lots of vids like this on youtube but I appreciate the detail and professional knowledge you bring to the table. Way more informative than, "oh yeah I like that bit". Thanks pal (always a pleasant surprise to hear a fellow Scot too ;-) )
omg im getting goosebumps!!
yeah angelic, is the right way to describe his voice 😍
very nice analysis!
Leprous is Norwegian and Rockefeller is in Oslo Norway
They’re from Norway! 🇳🇴
:D
Wow, what strong dynamic vocals he has. Never heard of this band but wow!please also React to Katrina Velarde 'Makaibang Mundo' on the Wish Bus plus Claudia Santoza 'Never Enough' winner of The Voice Germany. I truly believe she is going places with those strong unique vocals of hers. What is it with these Filipina singers, is it the water, what what what? 😁
Thanks so much.😍😘
I love this band. Einar can do falsetto and screams. Have seen them live a couple of times and met them. Great group of guys and very entertaining live.
Some of Norway's finest
Distant Bells by Leprous, please!
Really hope you do another leprous song
Check out Tesseract - Hexes with Martin Grech
Yay! Leprous! You don’t even know how much you rescued the dire Monday routine haha
1. Regarding the emotions... maybe the word you’re looking for is angst? That’s at least what I feel like when listening to them.
2. They’re from Norway and, to be fair, this country has some exceptional vocalists - like Janove Ottesen from Kaizer’s Orchestra (Begravelsespolka), Agnete Kjølsrud from Djerv (Get Jinxed), Terje Rothing from Skambankt (Når du her din nod) or Gunnhild Sundli from Gåte (Kom no Disjka).
3. Re the “Irishness” - this dirge style is also pretty common in Balkan folk but (I’m tired so I might be blabbing) I think they achieve this because, composition-wise, they drop the scale in these cadenzas. Still. Leprous. Point 1.
4. Was meant to ask you for a while here but any idea why it’s mostly tenors and sopranos in music? I mean, it almost feels as if bass/baritone and alto get next to no exposure the moment you deviate from musicals/classical (yes, I’m a bass and it annoys the hell out of me haha).
5. A minor thing but is there any chance the intro tune could be a bit lower? It’s kind of loud, so I have manipulate with my headphones to not to have my head explode :3
What a great comment! I could see why angst would be applicaple, but for me it was just very soothing, whilst being enveloped in the whole mood of the song. Like being in slow motion while the world rushes by (as I said these painkillers are strong so I might not be explaining myself in the best way ;) )
I think tenors and sopranos hit the "sweet spot" in music, generally the big money maker notes are within these ranges, so music is written with that in mind. My own opinion on it is that I'm not bowled over by range, it's absolutely what you can do with your own voice, tone, uniqueness etc. The world would be boring without the colours from those outwith the tenors and sopranos.
and yes i'll absolutely turn down that wee intro thing, I can never tell how loud it's going to end up, but i'll err on the side on "quieter is better" ;)
Sam Scott-Thorne: Session Singer & Vocal Coach
Ah, I see! Yes, they definitely managed to achieve what you described and don’t worry, this was loud and clear :) I’d probably never seek something like this in this particular genre (even if I grew up listening to it) but I agree.
As for bass - this reminds me; there’s actually one band that made a significant success with this type of voice. Not going to push you for reaction but try to listen to Love Me To The End by Deine Lakaien. I’m just curious of your opinion.
And thank you. Much appreciated haha
If you want some great lower range vocals, and for some reason you haven't heard them yet, go listen to Woods of Ypres or Type O Negative. Both bands that utilized the lower vocal ranges a lot. Well worth a listen.
John A. Zoidberg Ypres is genius indeed, re: Type O Negative: it was my high school haha. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of bass singers that are really good and had some significant success (Deine Lakaien comes to mind again, Lord of the Lost or Mono Inc.) - it just bewilders me that it’s not mainstream, compared to the other voices.
I just saw them in France a few days ago... And believe it or not, Einar keeps getting better and better...
you should check out "Death" or "Insomnia" by Cellar Darling. They have live versions of both songs from CZcams Space London.
Seconded!
For something so beautiful it might be healing (someone said they played it before going to bed every night) try Dimash "Autumn Strong" Singer 2017 Ep.4. For a video with a short intro which explains the background story of the song, and has a greater emotional impact, see the video on Gloria Wu's Y.Tube channel.- "Dimash translated : the true story of "Autumn Strong" with Eng.Subs." (You need to use the "cc" button to see what Dimash is saying in the intro). The song is in Chinese. If you were to react to this song, you might not want to use this copy because for some reason it runs slower, and is a semi-tone lower than another available copy (though it sounds OK to me). Not knowing the story means you won't know the reason for the audience's reaction to it.
The Price is a good follow up for these guys. Hope you do Daniel Thompkins soon.
Leprous just put out a new album too, it's what happens when a really good prog band decides to make a Pop album lol it's SO good, you should check out alleviate
Their older stuff is really good with more crazy instrumentals to compliment! I recommend off their last album Illuminate or Malina...really anything!
A different singer I’d recommend is Devin Townsend. He’s brilliant. Anything live is fantastic.
Will stay tuned for other genres to keep learning! Thanks and hope ya get better soon! ✌🏽
I have a vid on Devin! It was immense! I really want to hear more!
Oh shit!!!
I hope that a good "oh shit" and not a bad one! ;)
Sam Scott-Thorne: Session Singer & Vocal Coach It’s a great one! Wasn’t expecting this! Leprous is one of my favorite bands of all time. So glad you enjoyed them. Their new album has a phenomenal song on it called “The Sky is Red”. (They’re from Norway, by the way.)
They are from Norway...
Oh, and one last note, sorry! They are Norwegian 🙂
I was waaay off! Youtubing on painkillers is a challenge! :)
@@SSTVocalCoach irish and norwegians have shared viking ancestry. singing has a habit of letting that sort of stuff shine through. im no scientist but i bet theres definitely a huge topic there.
+ the singer's name is Einar...can't go much more Viking than that.
You should also react to Agent Fresco live or Pineapple Thief you would be surprise by them
There from Norway
Lol missed opportunity. Should have said "not my cup of tea" and then held up your mug 😄
Jinjer - Pisces! You will thank me after! :D
I've done that one already! It was special! It's in my playlist :)
They are from Norway
The second drummer wasn’t playing when you commented on him the first time. He just does accents, usually the same pattern as the main drummer but on a different drum for a layered effect.
Leprous are from norway
They are from Notodden, Norway, the vocalist's sister is Heidi (Star of Ash) married to Ihsahn from Emperor and they got all vocal training from Einar and Heidi's mother...
Sunday Leprous and Ihsahn are playing live and the concert is streamed at munin.live
Norway in fact
Beautiful reaction. Only when you call it rock it tickles me since they are more than a rock and a metal band. One of the finest prog metal rock band that bends genres.
You should really listen to Architects "Truth be told", Sam Carters voice is so passionate, truly something to listen
They are from Norway :)
Norway my man Norway! :)
Hey Sam, you should react to their song Alleviate.. or Tesseract - Nocturne :)
Hi sam ! Please react to ernie zakri and syamel - aku cinta AJL LIVE . Please . I promise you wont regret ! Thank you . -love from malaysia
Secret Long Love by Morissette Amon on The Wish Bus.
Norway I think
I was so disappointed when you missed the short high notes in the last two choruses. The real hook of the song.
I was too mesmerized and doped up to my eyeballs haha!
Can you please react to hexes by tesseract. Btw love you
They are from Norway. You should at least check before you listen.
04:16 Stop it!
How about reacting to a live performance of "Don't Know How to Love You" by Haley Reinhart. It's a very soulful and bluesy rock song. If you haven't ever heard Haley, you don't know what you are missing. Moreover, I guarantee this performance will not only blow you away but your audience away at the same time.

Hei Helge.
Do reaction on Elaine Duran sing till i meet you. Her riff are insane like torry kelly, she can whistle like morissete, and also she can belt like shoyang. Better than your favoryt artist
But this singer are very raw.
Also do a break it down the song
