    I liked that you take time to discuss all tactical decisions implied in Sea Lion.
    At 49.00, it took me a bit of time to realize that as German is attacker, 10 defenseless TPs can retreat into a friendly SZ 112 which can get another purchased Carrier by the end of G3. So, they are not immediately ditch into the drain even if one UK's Fg survived to sink them. Per rules, it is only 1 roll per UK's surviving Fg getting a hit beyond combat units, then all surviving TPs can retreat.
    These fully loaded TPs are all sitting ducks, but they are not immediately toasted.

    Another thought, for the Double-Scotch invasion strategy, I like to use one of the three transports in non-combat move to bring an infantry and an AA gun to Scotland. If UK has the means to transport the tank from Canada over in round 2 it’s not as useful, but if airpower is the only offensive teeth the UK player has to realistically hit Scotland, those three AA shots are a powerful deterrent.
    Also, the Double-Scotch depends on the two German fleets being defensible. If the UK has a destroyer or cruiser in range, Double-Scotch may not be viable. Perhaps the bombers and maybe a surviving sub or two can clean up that British Naval remnant, which of course means no bombing raid turn two for Germany.
    All things being equal, I really like the Double-Scotch invasion option. The scenario has to be just right to justify pulling the trigger for this come round 2. If it isn’t there, the all out invasion without Double-Scotch is still a strong option, as your video illustrates.

Great explanation of how the German player must consider this, and allocate their forces to deal with that possibility.

    Hey Grasshopper, as someone who plays the Allies a lot in my games, I don't see a need to ever scramble in either of those sea battles unless Germany isn't sending most of their aircraft so the fighter lost in Scotland is another possible fighter to be used to protect against sea lion. Also it is probably better for UK to buy 9 infantry (27 ipc, 15 infantry total) and save a point round one. Then even if Germany does bomb the British for 10 total damage, and assuming UK has at least 36 ipc (28 starting, plus Persia, plus 5 for holding all original territories, and 1 point saved) they can repair 4 leaving them with 32 ipc left and buy 2 fighters and 2 tanks. UK doesn't necessarily need more infantry after the first buy, it needs more heavy hitters to chew through all of Germany's land units so Germany starts having to sacrifice aircraft.
    Also if Germany really wants to save those transports so the entire investment into Sealion isn't lost, they need Japan to hold off their attack for the first two rounds (which can hurt Japan's progress in the pacific). Otherwise US can easily be set up to destroy those transports and even retake UK.
    This is why I don't think Sealion is honestly worth it unless the UK player strips themselves of their defense. Sea Lion can only be done to punish a careless UK player who doesn't spend to protect their capital. If they do spend to protect their capital, all that investment can go down the drain and UK can be reestablished the same turn if taken or the turn after.
    Edit:
    Sealion is something a German player should know how to do but I would point out that the threat of Sealion is more effective than actually doing it unless UK is careless and you'll know that based on their round 1 buy. If they don't protect against Sealion and strip themselves, go for it.

    Another thought on operation sealion and the double scotch
    If you do the double scotch and control Scotland and for some reason you get bad luck and get bad roles (bc it happens to the best of us) you can retreat to Scotland and then have it for next turn

  • @blacksununiverse1982

    You give a super-focused overview of the strategy and manage to show it wonderfully crisp. Axis & Allies is not exactly predictable. You also make it very clear that England should continue to play at the other venues. This is especially important for beginners, I think.
    I first wondered why England should pull everything away from Scotland. And do not distribute it fairly evenly. I simulated that, England then risked falling in G2.
    But I a have still one question. If you invading Scotland with these 3 Transports, why England not simply kill your fleet there? You have a cruiser, carrier and 2 planes vs 1 destroyer, 1 Bomber and 4 Planes. And after that move you have no ships left and you can not land on London.
    What do I not see here?

    • @TheCliffsideBunker
      @TheCliffsideBunker  Před 5 lety +1

      Haven’t watched that video in a while... the key is to of course keep the German fleet to land again in London. If the odds are against Germany and could lose their transports... I wouldn’t recommend the landing. I’ll have to watch it again and see if messed up during my explanation.

  • @Hambone7733
    @Hambone7733 Před 6 lety +16

    I like to bomb the airbase with the tactical bombers on round two as well as the factory. Usually the British player will not fix the airbase as they need units to defend the capital and that eliminates the scramble. So no fighters are needed in the sea zone and can be added to the capital assault. Of course the risk is the loss of a plane during SBR, however I think that's acceptable.

    • @dutchlancaster3990
      @dutchlancaster3990 Před 6 lety +3

      Hambone7733; I am in full agreement on this one! 👍🏼. Also, the possible use of subs in SZ 106/109 (convoy) and the buy of a strategic bomber turn 1, which would make 3 strat bombers to bomb the major production facility, would really put a drain on the UK economy.

  • @dutchlancaster3990
    @dutchlancaster3990 Před 6 lety +1

    What a great vid! I can tell you enjoyed making it 😉. I won’t go into how I may have done things differently, but I would really have liked to see the dice rolling on this one! Maybe even 3 times... I believe you mentioned UK making 35 IPC’s. If they are bombed on their facility for 7 points (which is a very low result for 2 strat bombers), they could not have gotten 7 inf and 1 fighter on turn 2; just by 1 IPC 😉

  • @ForeverDoubting
    @ForeverDoubting Před 2 lety +2

    Love the video, my only issue with this is, it seems to me that if the UK buys correctly, you need to nuke the infrastructure or the odds just aren't there for sea lion. Assuming you nuke the UK factory on turn 2, + the airbase (entire luftwaffe can do that) that leaves UK with a max buy of 4 infantry (repair 14, buy 12, income 29) + the first turn buy of 6 infantry and a fighter. That means including Scottish and french troops there's 17 infantry, 5 AA and 5 fighters (Gibraltar came over). Germany will be bringing 9 tanks 10 inf 1 arty, 2 strat, 4 tactical, 3 fighters (counting 3 AAA losses total). That's an 85% win for Germany.
    If you didn't bomb both the airbase and the factory, your facing a scramble which means no fighters for London (only 2 fighters to the channel is too risky) + the same UK buy of 6 infantry and a fighter. That puts the odds at 50/50. You need to take out those two buildings.
    All of this also hinges on eliminating both British convoys in the Atlantic. Another Canadian tank and infantry can tip the odds.
    All in all I've come to the conclusion that sea lion can be defended as long as the UK player remains alert in their first buys. It comes to the point where the German player has to go so all in, on not great odds, unless everything aligns in the Atlantic (and even then lucky AAA rolls can ruin everything). That I don't think most Germany players will want to risk the game that severely on turn 3. I'm also not even sure that after winning sea lion you don't suffer massively going forward. You'll have let two USSR buys go unanswered, and USSR will have the war bonus on U3 for no benefit on your side.

    Its a small factor, but worth noting that UK can take Eire pro-allies neutral on round one non-combat move with the mechanized infantry. In the interest of speed, it can get back to London on turn two so long as the double-scotch was not deployed. If they cannot, they defend just as well as regular infantry so no loss for the UK defense.

    This is a pretty good video! No disrespect, but I see a couple of holes in this strategy (although that could of course just be me). It seems like you aren't putting enough troops into Paris, and your chances of taking it are less. I also don't really see the need to kill Yugoslavia- couldn't the Italians do that?

    I might be missing/forgetting something but how is your fighter in the final battle attacking at a 4? The bonus to attack rolls by combining tactical bombers and fighters only applies to the tactical bombers does it not? The rulebook says under the air superiority characteristic "A matched pair of a fighter and a tactical bomber increases **the tactical bomber’s** attack value from 3 to 4." ; it makes no mention of buffing the fighters unless I'm missing something. Thanks for the video. Awesome as always.

I captured Scottland and my plan was to make a huge attack against London from there also from Normandy but the UK player built a destroyer in seazone 110. So my question is, can send the whole german fleet with transports to seazone 110 during the combat move and after I killed the destroyer make a bridge between London and Normandy during the same combat move? :)

    One question about the UK. Scotland on the map appears to be both Scotland and Northern Ireland, so can units from Scotland move directly into Ireland (pro-allies neutral), or do they need a transport to move in there? I haven't gotten Europe 1940 yet but I have Pacific 1940 and hope to have E40 soon. I looked at the rulebook PDF but didn't see anything about moving units from Scotland to Ireland. What seems to be the general consensus on this matter?

    YG, you forgot to transport a tank and infantry from Canada to London on UK2. Also, you didn't fly the UK bomber back. That's 3 additional units. I think that might be enough to swing the battle. At least cost you a few more German planes.

  • @tommydenney2899
    @tommydenney2899 Před 3 měsíci

    Running odds of the battle, if the UK had spent the 20 IPC on fighters instead on 18 IPC on infantry for london, the odds go from 80% german victory to 50% german victory. 84 IPC's on transports and only 50% odds if the UK only buys infantry seems very risky. Now, if you save or buy 1st turn, CV and TT's, and they go all infantry, I think Germany has to pivot away. If UK player spends in africa, builds a factory, buys planes, then you can move forward with your planned invasion G2 purchase.
    No scramble, and you commited planes to the naval, and your odds if they only bought infantry, drop to 30%.
    Might be cursing buying all those transports.

I would assume this means 5 or 6 air units as there are 4 potentional interceptors. However, your board following round two shows your air power back in Western Germany, telling me you only brought two Strategic Bombers and the 2 planes from the aircraft carrier. If that was the case, as the UK player I would not hesitate to intercept 4 vs 4 in that round two bombing raid. Thoughts?

      Interesting thought, but no... subs only defend at 1 and with a single destroyer purchase, Germany would have all there aircraft to wipe them out.If you’re thinking how can Germany take London without the majority of their airforce, imagine how weak London would look if UK spent most of their money on subs.

    I don't understand the aircraft carrier buy, London is close enough to the mainland where a carrier isn't required, I was thinking of getting a battleship instead so the uk scramble at the end is significantly easier to counter and if they don't the bombardment will most likely hit one too

    • @ForeverDoubting

      The defence a carrier with two planes brings seems much more valuable. Not to mention you'll be buying a transport less if you buy a battleship instead. You need to be able to hold and defend sz 112 during turn 2 or you won't be able to land on 3 at all if UK sends one ship and his air force. Perhaps a battleship+cruiser + scramble is enough to hold it anyway, but a carrier + air wing + cruiser + scramble cements it much better imo.
