Tiger parenting is child abuse imo. They failed as parents by facilitating her development into someone cold, rebellious, deceptive out of fear and emotionally detached. Children need discipline and boundaries paired with unconditional positive regard, support and warmth. Her parents overloaded the former and deprived her of the latter. This "daughter from hell" was created by parents from hell.

Straight up I'm a single father of twin girls and listening since the beginning all I could think of is damn man like I get it y'all came from a different country and had it rough and, you want your children to do better than you as always but you can't undermine and demean while also putting your "foot" down and being so strict and making them "your children" feel like they aren't good enough and forever chase the golden carrot and eventually that causes sooooo much damage.... I always tell my girls they are perfect and beautiful and I want them to know they are perfect and daddy always thinks they are perfect no matter what even if I get mad that doesn't mean they are anything less than perfect... And that the world is gonna tell them everything they aren't and no matter what they do they are perfect and amazing. They can do anything in the whole world and can be anyone they want.

I grew up with Asian parents and all I have to say is if anyone is in a similar spot, my heart is with you. I know it's hard for them to understand everything you're going through (especially because mental health challenges are so stigmatized in the community still) but try to have genuine and mature convos with them. The biggest things that helped me were: knowing that I would get to move out one day and focusing on my personal passions and making that vision a reality for myself. Stay strong, my friends

@@nashitaattarwala9178 I think what Charlotte is saying is that she wasn’t free mentally. Let me know if I’m wrong Charlotte. The damage had been done to her based on her conditioning by her parents. She couldn’t face them finding out because of their mental/ physical abuse in the past. Mentally, she couldn’t ‘just leave’, cut her ties and be ok. We see it all the time in DV victims.
However, she murdered her mother and tried to murder her father and so will spend the rest of her life in jail. She is guilty and so are both her parents. What we are seeing is this style of parenting can be really destructive to the development of a child. Cultural differences aside.

I relate to Jennifer. I have African parents and my mom was exactly like her dad. I did live a tiny bit of a double life, but not to Jen’s extent. Whenever anything went wrong, my mom blamed whatever friends or boy I was with. Like it is just IMPOSSIBLE that I can have my own mind and my own opinions based on my own logic and experience - no, me not wanting to live life her way had to be due to someone else’s influence. I was INFURIATED. Not to talk about the normalized child abuse (hitting your children, insulting your children - normal means of discipline for many of us immigrants). And you don’t run away because you feel like you can’t make it in life without your parents, you have no life experience and you don’t figure anyone would even care about you like your parents do. So you stay and take it and let the feelings fester. It messed me up my whole life. I am just now getting the right type of depression treatment that is helping me. I’m 32 and I didn’t understand at all how my upbringing messed me up until I was like 24 (at that age I had no money for mental health treatment. Health insurance didn’t cover it either).I don’t think I could ever go as far as to end the lives of my parents… but I understand why Jennifer did it. The only relief for me was growing up, doing enough talk therapy to understand what went wrong, having a job to afford trying all kinds of meds and treatments until I discovered a therapy that works for me. Other than that, my mental world was miserable since I was a child. I get Jennifer.

I was intensely suicidal for years because of that kind of parenting and in my darkest moments wondered if the pain would finally end if they were gone. Hey! Shout from the great white north here! LOL. I live in Canada not far from Toronto and remember this case very well. Crime documentaries/shows are one of my favorite genre's, and I especially enjoy Christina's commentaries! I often wonder how some parents can be so clueless when it comes to their children. I've raised 3 beautiful kids who would sometimes refer to me as "the meanest mom on the block" for setting boundaries...gauging their level of maturity and responsibility when it came to everything from cell phones, FB accounts, pets, dating, and even who they associated with. But I also listened to them, compromised or explained things, loved them like crazy, and learned from them too. Some may believe otherwise, but my commitment as their mom, was to ensure their overall wellbeing by "monitoring" all aspects of their lives (not to be confused with smothering or controlling). Graduation ceremonies are just the same Pomp and Circumstance as they are in the US (lived there too for many years). And Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario is a prestigious university...that does require parental consent with regard to their tuition policies, even if they are paying out of pocket. Ultimately, the evil this girl did is inexcusable, but some blame also rests on her parents, who were controlling in the extreme. The interrogation was a long one as Jennifer took forever to admit what she did and when they final arrived at most of the truth, she was only concerned about what was going to happen to her, never showing remorse for her dead/severely injured parents. SAD.

My kids dad's dad (my kids grandfather) is from Vietnam. He came over as a refuge at age 17. Then the rest of the family came over in groups until the whole family was reunited in Cincinnati Ohio in the 70s. I can 100% vouch for the cultural differences described by Jennifer. I've watched this case by several other creators as well and what always stands out to me is the ways Jennifer's family was much like my in laws. My kids dad was raised with a tough love upbringing & it wasn't beneficial to him in the least. It breaks my heart to see when parents just love their kids so much but want their kids to have better than they did but don't know how to love them kindly. My father in law just wanted the best for his son but his son (kids dad) didn't see it like that growing up. He thought his dad just hated him. Vietnamese people have work ethic like none other & my in laws are a true testament to that. Many have their own nail shops and would be open 365 days a year if they could. This story is tragic all the way around.

I’ve heard this case a couple times now and I still cannot wrap my mind around it… it’s astounding how individuals that are abuse victims will either go one of two ways; either they’ll do what this chick did and become the predator or they can take everything that was horrible from their childhood and do much better than that with their own lives…..
my mom was the worst example of how a lady should act that it’s despicable, I can not stand to be around her for more than a few hours depending on if she’s messed up or not. When I see she’s high or smell booze on her now I just spin on my heels and leave. She’s done and said things to me her only child that would shock even the most hardened person, but with that being said I couldn’t take her life. I love her only because she gave me life, and that is also the reason I could not do this.

Although I don't condone murder by any means, I think many people fail to recognize the detrimental effect that type of parenting can have on a person. It really is a type of mental abuse to make someone feel as if they are never good enough and to stifle their development in the manner that hers was. I speak from experience in this.

This makes me think how important it is to forgive. Our parents are just people. She was an adult. She had choices. Lots of children are abused and grow up to be imperfect but good people. I even know one guy whose mother murdered his twin as a child. I asked him how he felt when later in life he came back from his mother’s funeral. He said he put her in the ground with love and thought, ‘ mom, at least you cannot hurt anyone, anymore’
    I have never forgotten that.

Speaking from my own experience who have Asian parents that are immigrants, it is difficult. I learned from an early age the struggles they went through to raise me and my siblings. The expectations are high because they didn't get the luxury to achieve what they've wanted to do in life so in ways, we are living their dreams for them. The importance of wanting to achieve and making our parents proud is so high because they've struggled for so long and one of the only ways to show gratitude is to become successful and take care of them and enjoy the fruits of our labor together. It would be nice to buy parents their own home, take them on vacation or buy them that nice car they've always wanted.
Getting to her case though, her parents were strict but i feel like there were other ways she could've handled it like telling them the truth from the beginning. It would've been hard for them to accept but it's better than murdering your own parents. Even distancing herself from them or her father disowning her was better but I understand, family is very important and maybe she thought she could have both her parents and her boyfriend if she lied. Regardless, she ruined not only her own life but her parents and her brothers. I feel sorry for the father and the brother. RIP to the mom.

This is so sad and I feel for everyone, but I specifically want to talk about Jennifer because I related to her the most. That amount of control, overprotection etc really does a number on you and while I'm sad for her, she shouldn't have done what she did. I left my "home" the second I turned 18 and finished up that year homeless and graduated highschool. I spent many more years being homeless too but I've managed even though it was ridiculously difficult and I miraculously have a relationship with one of my parents now. Things can change and once someone is an adult it's on them to leave. She sounded more than capable too, so I think she needed a good sentence, although I would wish she would get therapy etc too but we all know that's not going to happen. (Although idk how different Canada is from here.)

It’s not worth it. I definitely think she regrets it! I don’t think she’s that bad of a person until she met her boyfriend I think he definitely influenced her in so many negative ways.
