  • In this video I compare two popular .22 rimfire pistols to illustrate which one is best for target shooting, hunting and general outdoor use. Both the Ruger Mark IV, and the Smith & Wesson model 41 are superbly accurate .22's, but which one is best suited for you. I hope to provide that answer in this video.

    My Model 41 is one of my all time favorite firearms. I was able to buy it from my Boss’s estate after he passed which makes it even more special to me. He was a wonderful human being and the 41 reminds me of him every time i pick it up.

      I agree with you about the mk iv trigger . I bought and installed the complete Volquartsen trigger replacement kit with hammer, sear, connector and trigger and it’s like day and night difference . My model 41 is the Performance Center model and it is the best 22 pistol I’ve ever owned. It’s like a Swiss watch and is a beautiful pistol. Head to head my S&W is the best shooter though my modified Ruger is close and it’s because of upgrading the trigger. My best shooting Ruger is my 2003 MK II Olympic competition 5 1/2” slab side . The factory trigger is excellent. Great truthful video!

      You have a problem with the ruger triger pull as some trigger pull can make the difference and with the ruger you pull to the right so S&W you shoot better I have seen both guns shoot head to head and it’s a tie most times

    I finally found a vintage model 41 a couple years ago, a friend of mine has a gun shop and I told him if he ever got one to call me. He called and said I have something you want! I went over and about freaked out! It was in the original box with paperwork. Perfect condition. He said make an offer, he wanted $1500, I got it for $1375 and was happy to get it! The 41 is a work of art! I own Woodsman’s, a match target, high standards, Rugers. The 41 is my favorite in my collection!

    I bought my first Ruger in 1985. They are very rugged and well made pistols. In fact, I love their single action revolvers. But, in almost every other handgun platform, I find the Smith and Wesson’s are far more refined, more ergonomic, and more aesthetically pleasing. I realize this is totally subjective and others may have a different viewpoint.

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  Před 2 lety +6

      I tend to agree. I own four Smith & Wesson's of various calibers and styles, and all of them just melt into my hand, and the triggers are what triggers are supposed to be.

    • @kbm-zw5jd
      @kbm-zw5jd Před 2 lety +6

      I mostly agree, and I love Ruger’s and have several. But in a .22, the Ruger Mark series is the benchmark, other than in seriously high end, out of the reach of the casual shooter, .22 target pistols. The Mark IV is awesome. Like all Ruger’s, some people feel the need to upgrade everything, but out of the box, they are more than adequate.

    I keep watching these videos about the 41. I’ve had one for probably 8 years but never fired it. I have other 22 pistols that are everyday shooters, so I thought I’d save it as an investment ( it was $1200 out the door brand new) but since S&W appears to plan on continuing production it doesn’t seem it’s a good bet on significant appreciation. This thorough video is the final straw breaking my refusal to shoot it. Well done comparison, hopefully you don’t mind being responsible for the termination of multiple squirrels at my farm:)

    I bought my m 41 in the early 80'S, and never looked back. Carried it on the trap line for decades, and it was always right there when I needed it.
    In the mean time, I've owned a plethora of .22 handguns, including Rugers, but none have come close to the Smith. Until now. I splurged, and bought the MK 4 Hunter. Well, the factory's rear sight was way out of whack to the west, so I gave it a chop to the east. That helped some, but I was a little soured on the gun because of it. Then I ran into a relative with a MK4, and he had put a reflex sight on his, along with the Volquartsen trigger. It was great! So I did the same. A world change! The Volquartsen trigger gets you down to 2 lbs. Fantastic! Between the trigger and the reflex sight, the Ruger MK 4 now rubs noses with the Smith 41, Awesome! If you go for a MK 4, definitely spend the extra loot for the Volquartsen trigger. (It's not simple to install, but they will do that for you for a reasonable up-charge.) Well worth the loot, and you'll have a pistol that rivals the Smith, and for much less money.

    You’ve done it again, great video comparison of two of my all time favorites. I have a Mark II Competition Target and a 41 that is identical to yours. While the Ruger is nothing to sneeze at, the outcome was not a surprise. I broke down a few years back and added two classics to my collection, the 41 and a pristine 6 inch S&W Model 17. I believe we both share a love for .22 firearms, rifles and handguns. I also have another .22 favorite, the S&W models 422, 622, and 2206 which I refer to as the “poor man’s 41.” I have owned a number of these over the years and just can’t seem to separate myself from them. If you own any of these models, I would like to see a review of them. Again, great job, your channel has become my #1 channel on CZcams.

      I once owned a S&W 422, but ended up selling it. I am on the hunt for a S&W Model 17, and/or the Colt Diamondback, but I'm sure I'll have to fork over some serious dollars for either one. I had the chance to get a Model 17 about 2 years ago, but I was a bit too late. I still own a 6 inch Charter Arms Pathfinder in blued steel and walnut grips. It's not a S&W but a great little revolver by todays standards. Not too long ago I picked up a S&W model 14 Masterpiece in 38 special. I got it for $300 and was smiling all the way home. It is a 6 inch model with highly polished bluing, goncalo-alvez grips, pinned barrel with wide trigger and wide hammer spur. A real gem that shoots "lights out". After reading your posts, I am convinced that we are on the same page in terms of hunting, shooting, and guns in general. I'm still just having fun making these videos, so it's nice to see that you enjoy watching them. Thanks again Wayne.

    As a young man I owned a High Standard semi auto pistol. (Disclaimer: I don’t advise doing what is described here, I was rather foolish, but it was still pretty safe). I was at the range one time, nobody else there, and somebody had left a three inch diameter steel pipe leaning vertically against the embankment of the 100 yard range. I sat down and leaned my back against one of the 8 x 8s that was holding up the shelter of the firing range, resting my forearms on the inside of my thighs. Using iron sights, nothing added to the gun except a factory weight beneath the barrel, and just a standard box of ammo, I was hitting that pipe 70-80 percent of the time, sometimes four and five times in a row. The pipe was ringing with each impact letting me know I had connected. In the meantime, somebody else had arrived and was getting set up, and he was flat amazed at what was going on. He inquired as to the make of pistol I was using. “Oh, it’s a High Standard I traded for,” I replied. I inherited my father’s primo Colt Targetsman about forty years later. He never shot it, and had it in his travel trailer. It’s a sweetheart. It is as new, bought back in the Seventies.

      ruger accuracy is there out of the box. but for most people to achieve the accuracy potential you need a trigger kit.about 150 dollars . a blued mark four can be had four under 500. 650 vs 1350 four the smith.i have a 2500 dollar pardini still can't shoot it any better that my ruger with a trigger job. you can put a volquartzen mark2 to kit in a mark 3 and probably a mark four. it take mag safety out.i think part that has to be added.allthough still looking at the 41 though

    The S&W Model 41, in either length barrel, was without doubt the finest .22cal handgun ever made in the USA. Modelled closely on the Walther Olympia of the late 1930s, and then on the Hammerli 208, it was, when introduced, a masterpiece of fine engineering, and remains so even now. I have no reason to doubt that S&W lost money on every one they made, being so much different to anything else on the US market. It was then, and remains, alone at the pinnacle of US firearms manufacturing expertise.

    These are both excellent guns. The Ruger is built like a tank, and often will take many decades of very hard use to break. I consider it one of the best gun designs ever. It needs to have a competent gunsmith to tune the trigger though. But once that is done, it will be good enough for almost all shooters. Only the best of the really good shooters can use the advantge a modern pistol, like a Pardini or Feinwerkba, will give you. To dry fire a .22, cut a small strip from a bicycle inner tubing, and place that on the breach face.

    I just purchased a Mark IV 22/45 Tactical and it shoots very nice but I think the trigger pull makes it harder to be as precise as I was with the S&W 41. I do have a Volquartsen trigger with a 2.25lb pull supposedly arriving any day ... hoping that will make the Mark IV a little easier to be accurate with.

    Nicely done, sir. So refreshing to stumble on a channel with no hype, just good info presented with class (subbed now, of course, and looking forward to exploring more of your presentations). My first gun a Mark 1 bull barrel target model (5 inch, 5.25”? I forget which) bought in the mid-to-late 70’s which i still have - and yes, have developed some reasonable mastery of its devilish disassembly (not that hard really, you whiny spoiled sots! Haha. Would i like a nice Mark 4? Well DUH!.... Classics are nice though, which is what I'm rapidly becoming myself, euphemistically speaking ;)
    I suppose i could hunt with it, even with its (relatively) abbreviated length barrel but being a city boy most of my life haven’t had much opportunity to try that - btw, what does squirrel taste like anyway? I’ve eaten rabbit, but don’t tell my now-adult kids that....they grew up with several of those fluff balls as pets and recoil (no pun intended) at the mere suggestion of ‘rabbit-cide’. 🥰🐰LOL

In competition shooting although we could only use 1 hand freeform and timed both shot really tight groups usually a good shooter could pue five rounds in a group that was almost the same hole. I prefered the model 41 i could shoot a tighter shot group with it and was more comfortable using it . Wish I could afford to buy one if anyone has an extra you can send it to me. Good shooting.

I'm interested in getting started in target shooting at a shooting range, but am not sure if I want to shoot competitively. Would you recommend going ahead and getting one of the high-end models from this video or going with something like the Ruger Standard Mark IV or one of the Browning Buck Marks? I guess I'm asking if it is worth the extra money for someone who will probably just do hobby shooting at a target range once a week. Thank you again for your good work.

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  Před 2 lety +1

      In terms of inherent accuracy, there is not much difference between the Ruger mark series pistols and higher end guns like the Colt Woodsman, Browning Buckmark, or the S&W model 41. You can get trigger kits for the Rugers, and install them or have a gunsmith install them. This will make the pistol shoot better for you at the range. The S&W 41 is more expensive, but if you can find one used at a reasonable price, and in good condition, it is well worth it. Great triggers, well designed sights, in-hand feel and balance, overall fit and finish, attention to detail, etc. I really can't explain how sweet the 41's are, you just have to shoot one to know what I'm talking about. Thanks for the comments.

    Shot against dedicated target rifles at a turkey shoot, and took the money.
    As for the trigger, I found nothing wrong with it, just as long as you learn the trigger, and the sights.
    Also made a 102 yard, one shot , two handed, off hand hit on a water filled drink bottle , on a fence post, in front of

    Nice video. You may have convinced me to get a scope for my Ruger MK3 hunter. Take away? Use what your gun likes.
    I have tried almost a dozen different types of 22LR out of my rifles to find one that shoots consistent groups at 50 yards. I now have each of three rifles marked to only shoot CCI standard. The other ammo, HV, sub-sonic, etc. all grouped like your demo of the Federal. The sub-sonic sometimes would not cycle my Ruger 10/22. The Remington Golden Bullet was just as good as the other but you always get a dud in the group. I put them aside for my bolt action. I need the 1.5 inch group at 50 yards consistently so CCI standard is my standard. I even tried the S-K flat nose that some have raved about but for me, it was not any better than the others and not worth the $10 for a box of 50. My rifles are low end that everyone can afford except maybe the Marlin 39A now.

    At 33:49, that was an interesting thing to watch! My immediate impression was that the second group was bigger, but that the center of both groups was in the same place. That makes sense in retrospect! Also, I have the impression that the makers of these target pistols call for Standard Velocity ammunition, and I am trying to make that work personally. I have a lot of Mini-Mags that I THOUGHT were right for these things, but now don't think so. Too bad! Both pistols have easily changed recoil springs that are available, but higher velocity ammunition just seems wrong for target shooting. Ah, I have seen a version of the S&W one for sale that used .22 shorts! Well, I'll get back to you if I ever get everything working smoothly. Might be a while!
