  • This is Raukura's Haka at the Nationals Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competitions 2010, held in Rotorua. This group placed 2nd overall. They represent two high schools in the Rotorua region. Rotorua Boys High School, and Rotorua Girls High School. They also represent Te Arawa Region being the top qualifying group of that area.

In War Wold 2 there was a dairy of old German soldier who wrote about there platoon coming in contact with the Maori battalion who ran out of ammunition, he said they look like they were all going to surrender give up then all of them took of their clothes and were naked, and started to do this aggressive dance very loud, it was so ferocious that it made us all feel intimidated and felt the fear inside us all, so we turn around and left, no one reported this to our seniors officers of fear of been deserters or executed.

I'm thinking maybe the dance is meant to create the illusion there is a lot more soldiers than there actually is.

Very similar to the berserkers in Nordic history. They dance naked & psych themselves up for battle while also scaring the hell out of their enemies.

+veteranraider 062 Not really. From a language stand point, the languages throughout nz or aotearoa is exactly the same. The traditions, thought varying very little from each tribe are very similar to almost exactly the same. Us Maori, though split up in tribes, are generally all the same. Before colonisation, we shared the same beliefs, the same cultures, the same traditions and the same language. The only thing that seperated us was the greed of power and land. All of the south island was one united tribe, and the north island was full of war.

This is intimidation at it's best and I just can't get enough of it! I wish America had a tradition like this. Instead, we have shopping malls...
Is the Haka a privilege that only NZ natives are allowed to perform? What if someone were to move to NZ from another country? Would he be allowed to perform the Haka?

DC if you came to NZ and wanted to learn a haka and perform it then there would be alot of people who would be happy to show you how. Over the years the haka has become alot more mainstream, i.e. being performed at sporting events and welcomes etc.
Other times it is performed at the likes of funerals, weddings and significant life events. These performances are usually emotionally charged and will either give you goose bumps or bring you to tears.
Come over for a visit and get into it, you'll love it.
This is just my personal opinion and I do not speak for everyone or on behalf of various tribes or groups.

DC "America" or the US to which you are referring still has almost a thousand distinct indigenous groups, 567 of them federally recognized, despite the genocidal efforts of European invaders and despite the continued discrimination and racism towards them. They have unique dances, cultures, traditions, etc. in many ways similar to Maori, as indigenous cousins. Educate yourself about your own country first. "Instead we have shopping malls..." make that "we" YOU, you non-natives of Turtle Island.

A very well written comment. Quite profession indeed. Brother, the respect is mine. I was replying to DC's post. My apologies if I was out of order my brother. I love and respect the HAKA but I will attack anyone who talk shit about my country. Believe it or not the Americans loves to see the All Black's Haka. When they came down to play rugby with our team, it was a sold out. The stadium was so packed that people were camping outside just to see the All Blacks doing the Haka. You see, we have wannabe in this country and they fucked up the haka. When the All Blacks did the Haka, every US citizen were clued to the TV. At the stadium, I thought it was going to collapse. It was a sight to see. Hell, even I was getting down and nasty with the haka. We the real Americans respect any cultures and welcome them to or society. That wasn't true for every tribe, many of the young ones would take arms alongside their elders, many of the young ones were probably told not to join in combat, but you know young ones. They have no ears! 😒

With pride I say I'm Maori and i can honestly say. I have many things to be proud of such as my fore fathers serving and dying for our country trying to provide a better future not only for us Maori but for all New Zealanders, also we are the only thing standing between the government and the privatisation of New Zealand and the sales of all of our natural resources and the preservation of our way of life. Also if you looked up the latest statistics you will be surprised on how well we are doing

The Celts were made up of several kingdoms that covered a vast area of Indo-Europe, the main two being Hallstatt and La Tene; all share a similar cultural trait or two, just as the Hawaiian's and Maori's share similar traits/rites/etc., but all very different in their own right.

my culture is in my heart and my family, it's with men and women no more than arms reach on the battlefield's I have walked, the dead and the living, my waking hours and my sleep. my skin is pale because this is who i am. i have what i have because i earned it not because i covet it. I am angry because I have witnessed the senseless destruction of everything and fought for what i believe. What have you learned Davis whitstone

Quite the contrary. There is much negativity that is associated with Maori. The media likes to paint the indigenous as really bad people. You can hear it in how people talk about Maori people. However, that might only be the case in the big city.

History and ones connection to their past is the most important part of knowing who you are and where you come from, it grounds you and gives you respect for what your ancestors had to go through with the murder of your people during colonialism
