I am sick and tired of demos and reviews where the idea seems to be to show a guitar being used for overdriven fiddlywiddling without giving as much time to clean tones. Well done for providing a good BALANCED review. Clean tones can tell you as much if not more about a guitar's potential than endless, boring note-scrunched shredding.
@@chriscunningham6510 Over the years, I've moved towards PRS semi-hollows but recently I bought an Epiphone Bluesmaster. It had most of the usual Epiphone problems such as poor setup, maladjusted tuners (just needed tightening) and a few buzzing frets but at least the selector switch worked! It took a while to re-adjust the neck and allow 24 hours between each tweak to allow it to settle. But after a few days it has ended up as a superbly playable instrument. At first I wasn't too interested in the Variator, but one setting and the push/pull tone control gives me a choice of 6 useful voicings. Your demo of the tones from 4.24+ is very useful for anyone considering this the Epi version of the LP. It is such a shame that so many Epiphones are shipped with really unforgivable weaknesses and faults. It's about time they came clean and advertised their instruments as "New, but don't be surprised if there are faults".
Thank you John. I've had my shiny white Les Paul Studio for 2 years and I love it. I don't know much about guitars but your little film has enhanced my affection for this beastie. All the best from New Zealand.
Thanks so much John for this. Snapped the neck on my old Epiphone semi-hollow body and have been looking at this and really needed to know what it sounded like clean, and you did a fantastic job here. Beautiful playing as well in the demonstration! Thank You -gary
Enjoyed the playing and the great description of this Epiphone. Great to hear a fellow Scot do a great demo without the usual overdrive cranked up to 11. Keep up the good work John
The Standard is designed to look good on stage however the heavy finish inhibits vibrations so for better sound quality the plain Studio model is best. Remember though that LPs were designed as jazz guitars and the Standard's brighter sound may be better for rock. In the UK the all mahogany Standards are about £300 while Standards with a maple top cost £370 and offer a still brighter sound and the longest sustain.
Thank you so much John for your teaching and also the way that you simply explain to us and detail, mainly the basic fonctionnality and purpose of each guitar.. You are one of the best on CZcams guitar technicien teacher... I always and deeply appreciat your video, Mario...
Great sense of humor, John. I love the faces you made after saying you forgive him. It's not always easy. Certainly different than what I might expect my own response might be. But, I'm American, so that's my excuse. Also a Christian, so I will try to tone down my attitude and pick up the example of dealing with frustrating situations with humor. Also, I'm shopping for a used guitar and you helped make my decision.
I am using a Tascam DP-01FX 8 track to record these videos. Most of its effects are rubbish but it has a vocal setting called Moody which is fairly natural for voice or guitar. As for practice amps, avoid light weight slim line amps as they rattle when you hit the 6th string. Marshall are unreliable, Roland have a mains click but Fender, Yamaha and Peavey make good basic amps. Modelling amps with amp simulations and effects can be hissy. Stagg are cheap and cheerful.
Every guitar I fancy you are always there .You are a credit to Scotland unlike myself .Should I get one & be done with it .I like you doing step toe at the end.
It is a few years since I played a Standard but generally speaking they have a high gloss finish which dulls the sound a little. If you pay a bit more you can get a Standard with a maple top which compensates for this dulling effect.
Bought the exact same one a month ago. had fret ends issues I never touch them, they dont interfere with my playing. strangley enough got the action down low, no fret buzz (unless your slap it) and the neck alomost dead straight. tinkered the Nut height, but got some limit outs on the intonation low e? I love playing it dont have an amp yet so it was great to hear it perform...
i love the comment about it reminding you of your wife. Im gonna use that when she says "you bought another guitar" bc my epiphone studio is being delivered today.
Hi John. Thought I'd let you know I bought one of these after watching your video. It had some minor defects and the fret board was as dry as old Harry, but after a couple of treatments I'ts getting there. Great guitar for the money.
I have not played either of these recently and from the look of the specification they are very similar. Your best bet is to find a store which stocks them both and give them a try. I suspect that at the end of the day it will come down to which one screams at you, 'Pick me up and play me!'
simple review and to the point. Thank you. Can you tell me what amp/processor are you running the guitar through? And what would be your recommendation for a good practice amp? cheers...
Vox amps are just as good as anything out there and along with Fender and Peavey are well worth considering. It really is down to personal taste and, wherever possible you should buy from your local store where you can pick up on things like hum and hiss which no on line retailer will admit exist.
The 1966 sg g400 pro has pull pots which allow you to use the pick ups as either single or double coil. It therefore has a greater sonic range but greater does not always equal better. A Steinway grand lacks the sonic range of a Casio but I know which I would prefer! If you can live with the weight of the LP i.e. you play mostly sitting down, then the LP has a superior tone to my ears. Best to find a shop that has them both and try for yourself.
Honestly, one of the best reviews I've seen. What did you mean about the pickups being too high when it arrived? It's just I would prefer a clean sound too but have no technical know how. Do you think the people at the shop would alter it for me if I asked?
Thanks for this review i watched the video several times :) Is the radius on this guitar 12”? Is it more confortable playing comparing to a Stratocaster for istance?
Sorry but I swapped the guitar for a Hohner classical which then got swapped for ... etc, etc. (that is how I get my hands on so many guitars to review. From memory it felt about the same as a Strat but then I have rubber hands that adapt to anything which is both a blessing and a curse!
Great review! I've been looking for a review that looks more closely at the clean tones than the overdriven. One day when the missus approves my next guitar purchase I will choose between this, the Aria PE Elite, and the Ibanez Art 90. One day.
For your own long term satisfaction yes but simply as a tool maybe not. 30 years ago when the kids were still at school, the gearbox fell out my car and I had to sell my good guitar (an Ibanez Musician) and amp and replace them with cheep gear and a car that worked. I was dreading the reaction that I might get from the audience at my usual gig but to both my relief and my surprise, I got exactly the same reaction as normal. This proves that it is not the instrument that matters it's the song.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago but the bridge pickup had been fitted off-centre, a couple of the surround screws had been inserted at an angle, and strangely, the volume and tone controls, and the selector switch, were in the wrong position, as was the strap stud, causing the strap to slip off. The 'worn-cherry' colour was more like a mahogany colour too. Terrible quality control. I sent it back and bought an Ibanez Artcore instead.
+Brian Halpin I am using an Ashton Tube Simulator pedal. It was only about £25 but it has a great tone. The riff is nothing in particular, just a generic blues run.
Great review. I am considering to buy a Epiphone LP Studio. Do you see any disadvantages (or even advantages) compared to the LP Standard? With regard to the price tag they are both in the same range.
The only thing I would consider paying more for is a maple topped model. Theoretically they have a slightly brighter sound and a touch more sustain. Remember that the appearance will be important, a guitar should scream at you, 'Pick me up and play me!'
Your guitar videos always have such beautiful tone. Would you please consider doing a video on how you set your guitar tone between the tone knobs on the guitar and the tone knobs on the amplifier? Perhaps one on a tube amp and one on a solid state amp. Thanks for your consideration.
+Jim Mcmanus No I just use it when I want distortion. The Tascam I used to record the whole thing has some reverb on it and a vocal effect called Moody which gives quite a rich sound.
+John Coupland Thanks John , just love clean demos , who knows what a guitar sounds like buried deep in effects , just got the Epi LP Studio BECAUSE of your demo , all the best for christmas , JIm.
Loved the video :D You might just have tipped my scales (hehe) into finaly going for it. I dont have a lot of cash but the studio kind of fits my pocket. I like the finish of the Studio more than the Standard anyway :) Thanks :)
I found the action too low which means that there was a bit of fret buzz. You correct this by loosening the strings then turning the two adjusting wheels at the bridge to raise it about 1 or 2mm. Tune up again and things should be better. Pick ups can also be adjusted in height by turning the screws in the plastic surround. Raising them near to the strings gives a higher output and lowering them gives a lower and cleaner sound. The guitar shop should do this for you if you ask nicely. Buy cakes!
+ldooliveira1 None of my friends or pupils have a Gretsch so I cannot really give an opinion but you should note that all the Epiphones I have reviewed so far have had their problems.
+John Coupland Thank you for the heads up. I have been more inclined to Gretsch (I don't know, something about its sound and how it feels playing) anyway. Congrats on the clever chords series too, a lot of nice stuff there!
I'm extremely confused between picking this or the les paul standard .... are there major differences in playing and sound between both guitars? or its just the look of the model?
+Pim Vd Steeg I do not have access to a Standard but as you go up through the modelrange what you get for the extra cash is, a fancy paint job, (takes more man hours to create), next is a maple top which looks cool and may give a very slightly brighter sound. Lastly you get pick ups with a tendency towards more treble. Oh and for some peculiar reason blue or green guitars seem to be more expensive than other colours.

Agree 100%, the problem is instrument tonal differences don't mean a lot when playing through over 9000 levels of distortion.

Load of crap how much you getting paid for bull shit
Do you think for one minute 90% of Epiphone buyers did what you just explained. I very much doubt it!
this guitar sounds pristine in your hands fine sir.
The Best grandpa ever
He's not your grandpa so stop looking for likes.
I think she didn't mean that
I freaking love this guy, haha. I'm sold. I've got to get back to learning my instrument.

THX! Just simply amazing test-drive of Epi guitar.
This was the video I needed to see to make my final decision on which Les Paul to purchase. Thanks!
Great review - no flashy showing off - straight to the point, and informative. Full marks!
Thanks for a great demo without all the screaming distortion. I now know what the guitar sounds like and not the amp.
Exactly. I think a lot of shredders just use shredding and monster distortion to disguise bloody awful inaccuracy. They sound like robots anyway.
Thanks for that excellent review John, it covered everything. All the best from East Kilbride.
GREAT reviews - I've watched several and they've been fun and fair. Appreciate that more than ya know.
I could listen to your voice all day. Great vid!
Thanks PTJ, try one of my playlists?
i love the smoothness of your playing, lovely :)
Thank you sir! Great playing, guitar, and review , nice clean tone.
You, sir, are a smooth gentleman. Thanks for posting (a long time ago). Sounds great.
Great review...Thank you! I too want to know how it plays and what it really sounds like without a ton of distortion...perfect demo!
Ho comprato questa splendida chitarra un paio di giorni fà, davvero un gran bello strumento! Grazie, John, per l'ottima recensione...bravo!
Prego.
I like the guitar, and your accent is even better. I mainly watched this video for your accent, not going to lie.
This is an awesome channel les Pauls are easily my favourite model of Electric guitar
Now I have the same, Epiphone LP Studio, in black colour. And it's amazing guitar! Thanks a lot again.

Superb review! Thank you.
Thank you sir. Very good review. I've been contemplating picking up one of these, and I think your review clinched it for me. God bless, brother. : )
A good choice.
Nice work here, back in your younger days. The LP 100 you did in the another video actually seemed to have a better overall tone.
Great review, thanks for your time in sharing.
Thanks for watching!

I’m completely stuck on Mr. Coupland’s videos. I’ve learned so much
I don't know , I was just making it up as I went along although there are a thousand and one blues songs out there that use something similar.
Great demo. I’m going to buy one.
Good choice Phil.
Buen Review !! Sin maquillar el tono (distorsiones en todo momento) manejando bien los matices tonales de la guitarra.
thank you very much for answering, I'll probably buy this on.

I had one that was all black looked so good but it got stolen a month ago miss it now
Mrs. Doubtfire rocks!
I have the reverse tuxedo version of that guitar it has a real nice sound

Love the Scottish accent
Thank you for the video sir, is the back of the neck glued? and no maple top at all, right? How's the sustain compared to the standard?
Yes a glued in neck with no cap on the body. There is no significant difference in the sustain but the tone is slightly darker than the Standard.
@Jagz21: You could try a Vox Pathfinder 15r - they are brilliant value and sound great!
great review! im considering this or the 1966 sg g400 pro, can you give me any more advice#?
Love your review with a good sense of Humor :)
I'm either considering this or an epiphone special 2, based on value for money more than quality, which one would you recommend?
Oh cool! Thank you!
Awesome, thank you =)
