- A quick look at the Epiphone Les Paul 100 electric guitar. Played through a Tascam DP-01fx 8 track and using an Ashton Tube amp simulator for the overdrive.
Theme music 'Mustang,' from my album, 'Warbirds,' by Harpaxe. Available from Amazon & i-tunes. - Hudba
I could listen to your voice forever
Oh the joy of a demo without ear-smashing overdrive and messy backing tracks which drown out everything. As ever - a superby balanced demo and commentary. Thanks John.
What a great way to end the review in these otherwise testing times. If only life were that simple! Oh, wait a minute, perhaps it is...
Really enjoyed that sound through the pickup only. You are slowly convincing me to expand into the world of electrics.
I love how when I search up a guitar your always there with a review. Even when I was looking for obscure reviews on squire pro-tone's you were there. Always a pleasure.
Thanks James, perhaps great minds really do....
Beginner here :) I really liked that quote at the end there. I can already see it written on a wall behind the register in a guitar store. Well said, sir.
You rock john - keep them coming
nice review, different styles of playing , all sounding great !
Keep Rocking John! I salute someone like you! We grow old with our passion!
Thanks Des.
Hello John, thanks for the review I'm off to buy one based on your review. Love the quote about at the end I'll be stealing that!
Thanks, useful info. You showed us the true sustain and intonation, told us the weight vs standard.
Thank you so much. It was really awesome to realize you didn’t have a pick and that was all fingers. Beautifully done.
Glad you liked it!
Came for a guitar review, ended up getting unintentional ASMR.
Ah a fan of all things Anti Social Music Related!
John Coupland Haha! In all honesty you do have a tremendously relaxing voice. I purchased the guitar after watching your review. Not a bad guitar. The neck is a tad bit bulky in my opinion, but other than that it’s very comfortable and has a great sound. Thanks for the review and all of your positive messages!
Great demo job!
Nice playing, and nice review! I have a Mexican strat, and picked up an Epiphone Les Paul 100 several months ago. I love the contrast in how they feel, play, and sound. The combo is a great way to make a one-man band (bedroom hobbyist) sound more like a band with different people playing together. The $210 USD price tag is extremely deceptive for the Les Paul: the thing almost plays itself! And it's gorgeous to look at, and so nice in all respects.
Did you buy it new?
I love this guitar i have one its great to play.
found one at a pawn shop today. Had to put it on layaway after playing around with it, lol. Your voice is like Earl Grey.
Love your Reviews ! Greetings from Germany !
Just make sure there is no sign of cracking at the back of the neck / head joint. Other than that it seems a fair price. As for the accent, it comes with the territory!
Great review and a great gentleman. This will help me with my decision to buy my first guitar. :)
Glad I could help!
So nice guitar.woah
Great playing
loved your video! You play really well! greetings from Brazil
Thanks Nicolas, much appreciated.
I forgot to mention also when I changed the new strings I fownd the tunning nuts loose on the front head stoke needed tightening also after all that done, it sounds and feels great .great buy.
No joke, I think this guy is actually an immortal all-knowing ageless being, who through the centuries has spurned on humanity towards some sort of ultimate music. I have absolute faith in him, as slowly he urges us forwards, to realize enlightenment is just the original Star Trek theme song. Thank you.
A strong candidate for Comment of the Year.
Brilliant! I love this guitar! I installed a bigsby b70 to my guitar! I will be uploading a video to my channel to show how it looks with it :)!
I've had this guitar for 10 years. put seymore duncacs in it and i plan on keeping it forever. I have it setup perfect plus the wear in.
If you don't mind me asking, what Seymour Duncan's did you put in there? I'm dying to do the same, I've heard it sounds great
Just bought this guitar, thanks
Maestro!:)
Класс! Недавно приобрел такую гитару, не нарадуюсь!
I'm a sucker for the sound of lower end ceramic humbuckers. No joke I really love the sound of them.
On my summer holidays, i was doing a research (online) to buy an electric guitar and I had come to decide on a Les Paul by Epiphone Plus top pro model (the second choice was the PRS standard 24)upon returning home to Athens i ran to the store to buy it and i realized they din't have one on hand and they said they would have it the next day, but i was so worked up in my mind to take my first electric guitar home and enjoy it,i bought the PRS .Great guitar and sound, but my mind was stuck on the LP and i found a cheaper remedy to my passion( a month later) the Epiphone LP 100 for 168 eu the black one .So again i ran to my favorite store to buy it only realizing that they sold it the day before but they told me after a few calls that the black one is all out and available is only the starburst one and they can have it to me in an hour but its price is 235 eu little more expensive than the black one. So after buying the lp 100 my impression of the guitar is very high, with a beautiful finish and parts BUT, it needs its truss rod tunning( it was left loose), and new strings( they are very cheap) now it sounds great for some reason i use it more than my PRS maby becouse i payed less and it sounds great and can take it with me with out much worry if something happens to it.
So good
Good video Thanks
Sounds like a great budget guitar for starters like me. I'm planning on either going for this or the Epi LP Standard, which is a few bucks more than the lp100. I wish someone made a review comparing these two and see if the standard one is worth the extra bucks over the lp 100.
ikr fucking same
Great review!
I love my epi 100..
One of the first things I did when I got mine was throw the bridge pickup straight in the trash and replace it with a DiMarzio "Breed".
I've got a DiMarzio "Super Distortion" in the bridge. Doing this, plus a graphite nut and Grover 18:1 tuners completely changed the whole situation about this guitar.
It is a good basic frame to mod.
I started playing about 2 months ago. This is the guitar I bought. I also bought a Line 6 Spider V 20 which I’m starting to maybe regret a bit because it has a pretty garbage tone, but has awesome versatility. If anyone has any pointers for me about an amp, sent them my way.
thank you.
got the same guitar but your clean ch got so much more tone in it..Made me realise I gotta work more on my amp settings ..
low battt would you recommend?
It sounds surprisingly resonant (unplugged) for a cheap electric with bolt-on neck - lovely electric sound too. If a guitarist can play, this would be as good as any guitar out there IMHO.
jeffs1000 glad to hear you say that.ive got one on lay -away.have you had any tuning issues?
Large part of this guitar's sound comes from the man playing it. He's going to make most anything sound great!
You must have not seen the videos of those who maintain that the glue reduces the sustain and that bolt on is better! You can prove this to yourself as long as you believe.
Sir you are a melodic guitarist ❤
Many thanks.
Would love to hear you review the JHS Vintage V120 -- it rarely seems to get much coverage whereas the V100 and V130 gets a lot more exposure.
Maybe you'll get your hands on one sometime.
I have a pal who is a compulsive buyer and he has not bought anything for about 2 months so you never know!
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thanks John. Hopefully at some point in the future the ringing bell will show you with one of these.
Subscribed!
I had to return an epi standard because its alnico classics are not up to par with the epi 100s for me. My 100 is much much lighter than a standard. I am guessing 1. 5 pounds.
is this a lower or higher model than the epiphone les paul studio LT? ive seen some sites where they have the 100 for both lower and higher prices at the same time than the LT so im a bit confused (not uncommon)
The 100 seems to be the higher spec of the two. Price differences may be due to the sinking pound with each batch costing more pounds than the previous one, hence the overlap.
I've got a Encore.. Ya.. An Encore E99 Had it ages.. Replaced the Tuners and p90s pickups .. Set it up properly and guess what. Its a definite keeper.. Plays better than my 80s Tokai..
Hi John, I've always heard that Les Pauls tend to have trouble staying in tune, how is yours in that department?
This one is perfect but I have come across one LP that was just a bit odd. A friend had Gibson LP which only played in tune when it had a capo on. That would indicate the nut or the nut to first fret distance was the problem.
@@JohnCouplandguitar I would suggest that it could also be due to strings being too high in the nut.
@@JohnCouplandguitar It's the very first thing I do. check the tuning between Open and 1st fret.
Then I set the Stop Bar at the precise angle the strings are at from Behind the nut to the tuning pegs.
This allows that When you do a substantial bend the tension is in better balance according to the pre load at the bridge/nut.
The gentle slope at the nut to tuning pegs as opposed to a drastic acute angle often seen in Stop bars tight to the body??
yer welcome
Great demo. I have the same guitar that I bought for a really good price when a local store was closing down. But it has buzzing and rattling on the lower E string and A string all the way up to the 12th fret. Can you please help me with rectifying that?
Either the bridge is set too low at the bass end or the neck has a hump in it, or both. To check for a hump, hold the 6th string at the 1st fret and at the 12th. You should see a gap between the 7th fret and the string that is enough to slip a thin pick in like using a feeler gauge. If you can do that then the bride is the problem. Loosen off the strings and raise the bass side by screwing anti-clockwise. If you the neck is indeed humped you will have to loosen the truss rod by loosening the 4th and 3rd strings, removing the cover plate and loosen the rod completely using an Allen key. Just leave the rod finger tight to prevent it rattling. Some trial and error may be required with either of these adjustments. If all else fails a heavier set of strings may pull the neck forward.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Tomorrow I will have time to test out your advice. Fingers crossed I get it sorted out. I will update you on my progress.
Anyone know what the "100" stands for?
Thanks.
An Opening Statement; a little background, I began my professional life as an auditor with a couple engineering degree applications.
I enjoy working with math and I enjoy playing a guitar.
One might see these two realities and not realize where they both agree and have a significant relationship.
But we do often hear that music is mathematical.
AN EXPERIMENT WE CAN DO AT HOME;
In terms of significant characteristics, The Gibson Les Paul is Best Known, Admired for and Loved, because of its tone.
sitting a (set neck type guitar while you are in a seated position) on the lap of One leg/knee. (please make certain she is IN Balance)
Tuned to Pitch, strum with a normal stroke across the entire set of strings.
RESULT; you will FEEL the "entire" guitar, head stock, neck AND body, vibrate and hum, in balance.
(a two piece or bolt on neck instrument will vibrate BUT the vibrations Will Be substantially Muted in the Body and less even in comparison)
A Set Neck Guitar (Like the Les Paul) is also well known for ITS Feel.
In other words, a good guitarist can actually FEEL in his hand this amazing guitar "Interpret and Translate" his technique which make the guitar playing experience one that Incorporates that very special place where a human and an inanimate object are blended.
This gives the instrument an almost Human like quality as it responds to even the most subtle touch.
Almost E=mc2, cause and effect, action/reaction = synergy.
That's Why a Jazz Type guitar (which the original designer was looking for) is best played in the seated position where it is held away from the players torso and therefore allowed to vibrate and hum without a human body as a baffle.
WHAT ARE KILOPASCALS/FOOT POUNDS/TORQUE and PRE-LOAD?
This is not as complicated as is may appear.
So, bare with.
1st; there are only 2 places on a set neck guitar where you will see the Results of "pre-load" or downward pressure.
1. at the nut where you will See the strings actually abruptly Change direction, downward from the back of the nut to the tuning pegs.
2. Downward at the back of the Tune O Matic Bridge to the Stop Bar.
A GENERAL OBSERVATION NOTE;
Many have claimed that the acute angle Gibson manufactures in its Head Stock Design, is the cause of Tuning issues.
But that Angle Pulls String Tension "Down and Across the Nut".
Try pulling up or down on any string in the middle of the instrument and see how easy it is to wiggle and wobble.
Try doing THAT where the tuned to pitch string enters the nut?
This difference is largely created BY the Head Stock Angle as the string is actually being Torqued downwards creating tonnage right there ON that Nut, in fact 99% of all the vibration on the Played note Stops immediately and suddenly on the top of the nut AND THEN beautifully transmits those vibrations INTO the neck and down INTO the Set Neck Body Configuration.
I'm a little tired cause like yourself John Im a bit older.
IF, you are interested in the real reason LP's have tuning issues, I will continue and prove why and the perfect solution.
That does not include silly graphite and goo
As I have mention here addressing a different comment, I very seldom have to tune my guitar.
My brother left one at my house recently. I prefer more sensitive pickups to rock out with.
Yes Les Pauls can be a bit muddy.
First of all, I gotta say, I love your accent! But secondly, I visited my local guitar shop, and I saw one of these used for $125, but with a bit of a ding in the headstock. Is that a good deal, or am I asking for disaster?
The Author buy from Sweetwater $299 BN and they do a complete check up for free over $299 and setup for a small fee love Sweetwater!
So did you buy it? I'm buying one later today, can't wait! Hope whatever you ended up buying is working out for you :)
What amp is good value and really brings out the potential of this guitar? Any recommendations which aren’t too expensive?
For quiet practice with good tones the Yamaha THR-5 is very good. If you are playing in a small hall then you need 50 Watts and if playing with a drummer 80-100+ Watts. Stagg are adequate but Fender or Peavey amps are better. Budget Marshalls are best avoided although their pro models are fine.
John Coupland Awesome, thank you!
You are a good player sirrrrrrrrrrr.....
Thanks SMD, much appreciated.
How you play, your amp and speakers, your choice of pick and the room you play in will have an infinitely greater influence on your tone than whether your neck is glued on or the type of wood used in your guitar's construction. I think that I can say that this is truth beyond question. If you're the kinda person who likes fiddling with your guitars set up then a bolt on seems like a better option. I've never thought 'wish my Tele was a glue in for more sustain or my Strat'. Wood with glue between wood or wood to wood direct? If you pick up guitars and check the headstock first(front and back of course) you'll disagree with me.
Is this a decent guitar to buy? I’ve been wanting a les Paul for a while and ordered one of these.
It is a decent guitar, you should be happy with it.
I got one
I like John . John is pretty cool
Thanks Niloy, God bless.
Thanks for the video. Are these the stock pickups here Sir?
Yes they are stock.
Thanks. In the process of purchasing one. Any suggestions you have concerning upgrades?
I tried a Gibson 57 classic in the neck position and it gave a better jazz sound and one rainy afternoon, out of sheer boredom, I fitted a spare neck from a Yamaha Pacifica to it! It worked perfectly. As I rarely use distortion I cannot really advise you on high gain pick ups.
Thanks, nah me as well. Mostly clean sounds. Dirt around now and then but not intense. Thanks
Hi John, thank you for your review, Im still thinking about the difference between this epiphone Lp and the original. Lp Gibson original users use to say that there´s a clear tone difference, but from time to time, someone can get a epiphone with the same sound of an original Gibson Lp. Well, at the end of the day all this depends of a kind random thing. This is my conclusion
I have always found that the sound of a real Gibson is a little too thick for my taste. A good copy like this has more treble and therefore suits me better.
I have a question, how many mm is the saddle width of the guitar?
Sorry Noel but the guitar is long gone. I took it in a trade and then sold it on.
I like the bolt-on neck on my Strat. So I can't think of any reason why I would dislike it on a Les Paul.... Only a Gibson fan boy would complain.
CyberRabid I myself am a fan of Gibson, but as a broke man, can’t afford any Gibson’s so I bought me a epiphone haha
what are the chords or the song name at 2:28 ? great review
It is just G C D and no song in particular, I was improvising. I do my D chord with a slight variation in the fingering, Although I am playing exactly the same notes my 1st finger is on the 1st string. In the G chord I included the d note on the 2nd string.
John Coupland oh, thank you
What Would you say is better, squier telecaster vs Epiphone les Paul ?
I would choose the LP.
I’m on the fence about this one but if I go any higher I’ll need to find away to pay it off from my parents
Would this be a guy second guitar? I'm thinking about getting the "demo" from sweetwater which basically means it would be like buying a guitar off the wall at guitar center.
While the Demo models may have the odd scratch, they are probably well set up so they can be a bargain.
@@JohnCouplandguitar you would be surprised at how guitar center treats their demo guitars. A lot I tried had pretty high action and had not been taken care of. At least the one near me.
Should I pick up this Epiphone Les Paul 100 or the Epiphone Les Paul Special VE?
The 100 is closer to the real thing. You have 4 controls instead of 2 and a better contoured body.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thanks, will it need any setting up? Like the action changed or something?
@@matt.noble05 Most guitars are close but not perfectly set up so it may need a tweak or two.
@@JohnCouplandguitar awesome! Thanks so much!
is it a good idea to buy this as a second user?
They are well built so it should be OK. Just do the usual checks, is the neck straight, do the controls crackle, is the jack socket loose?
is the 100 a arched top or flat top???
LJ arched
It is a good guitar?(Im thinking about buy one)
It is one of my favourites.
I have a black one
Ahhh a fellow Scot :)
BobTheStickMan5 me too!
How true - took me years to settle on Fender. Oh - hang on - is Strat vs LP the same as Fender vs Gibson? Trouble is, I ended up throwing Taylor into the mix so now (like Brexit) I'm wrecked.
PS - sorry for using the swear word.
Does it hold it's tune well?
No problems in that department.
Question! Is it a good option as a first guitar?!
If you intend to start on electric then yes this is a good one.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thanx!
Mariano Eduardo Canchi Recalde,
Absotively and posilutely!! I've been playing since 1963 and this is the best playing guitar I have ever picked up. If you do buy one, be sure to have it set-up by a trusted luthier.
Is it a high string?
The action is quite low and comfortable without buzzing.
Is that the same guitar on the thumbnail?
No, the logo is this one... Video link

@@JohnCouplandguitar thank you very much 👍
Beautiful accent 😊 are you Irish or Scottish?
Scottish.
+John Coupland Cool. Great review, would you say that this guitar is heavy like a Gibson Les Paul, or lightweight?
It is lighter than either the Epi LP Standard or the Gibson itself.
+John Coupland I see. Thanks for the clarification!
But does it djent??
I asked it but it just gave me that look that said,' Play something beautiful and I'm yours.'
Ask Lee Malia ;)
fuck djent does id do blues
@@JohnCouplandguitar hahahahaha
Jenny Aston you’d be surprised what the pick ups can do the neck is terrible but the pick ups are what most of the money goes into , i own one and i’ve had the neck repaired twice and it sucks keeping in tune but it sounds great for hard rock and metal
Is it an archtoo
Yes, there is a slight arch in the top.
I bought the Even cheaper model studio Epi?
It has an Ebony FB. flat as a pancake.
Problem with Ebony;
If you research the Hardness and density of Ebony you will discover it is one of the hardest woods in the world (at least the one's used for guitars)
My Epi, created absolutely NO Relief tuned to pitch with 10's I slacked the truss to Floppy.
Still dead straight at pitch??? (u can't run it with a slack truss) but even to Creek it on, buzzed out. oh dear??
Took off the neck and shaved it 1/8th.
Then put a very fine angle tilting neck forward 10th.
Besides the cheapo frets teenie weenie's, this guitar rocks.
Lesson; an ebony fret board (like steel) glued to a mahogany or maple neck (relatively softer) will never allow the truss to adjust.
Not a good combination.
I can tune this guitar on any fret, Open or any place on it every string.
I can not justify swapping out the pick ups cause you heard it for yourself.
The tuners; that is another story, no bueno.
The Tune o matic; sure eventually.
The Pots; indeed could be replaced and the pick up selection switch too,
Then I'd have to do the frets and I'm not gonna! $$$$.
I shaved ALL the finish off the sticky sticky neck.
I very seldom have to tune this guitar, sure it changes, but does so equally across the strings??
A very useful review John.
I own this guitar. It’s very good except it weighs a very heavy 10 pounds.
same its o heavy
you look like Paul McCartney
please be my grandpa
Certainly, as I already have 6 grand kids your official designation is 007.
A guy offered me one of these for 175$, am I paying too much for it?
A fair price for a guitar in perfect condition is 70% of the cost of a new one. Every scuff mark will reduce that unless it is being sold to a moron who thinks that brand new road-worn guitars are cool. Typically these numpties will be wearing jeans bought with holes already in them. In that case the scuff marks add to its value. You also need to take supply and demand into account so if there are a lot of similar guitars on sale then you may have to settle for less.
John Coupland Thanks for the advice!
I would gladly be your grandson
I already have six but I suppose there is always room for one more.
