Fried Green Tomatoes - Heirloom Recipe - The Hillbilly Kitchen

  • How to make Fried Green Tomatoes is kind of a lengthy video....just to fry a tomato. I mean, how hard could frying a tomato be? Well, it's a little more complicated than just throwing them in your frying pan for a few minutes and then serving them up. If you want them to taste good, you have to have a little patience and do it right.
This is my granny's recipe of course. I can remember helping granny make Fried Green Tomatoes at a very young age. I was so small that I had to stand on a homemade wooden stool that Paw had made, just to be able to see into the cast iron frying pan on the stove.
I took a particular interest in granny's cooking because she let me get involved in every aspect of it. I helped her plant the tomatoes, hoe the weeds out of the garden, stake them, pick them when they were ready, and then bread them and fry them.
Granny taught me that making Fried Green Tomatoes takes patience. It was a good life lesson. She said that if you don't teach yourself to be patient, then God would teach you and you're not gunna like the way he teaches!
    Ingredients:
    3 - Totally green tomatoes
1 cup - Self rising flour
    1 - Egg
    1 cup - Buttermilk
1 to 2 cups - Yellow corn meal
    1 cup - Oil
    Salt and pepper to taste
    Sugar - Optional

I like to save the ends in the freezer and add them to soup for extra flavor. I also freeze lemons to avoid letting them get moldy. They still taste okay when you defrost them and use them. Don't cut them in half. Just puncture the stem end after running hot water over them and squeeze the juice out. You can save lemon skin in the freezer to use later in recipes for cookies, etc.Waste not, want not.

I also use peanut oil for all my frying. Last cholesterol test was a total of 124, so I just be doing something right.

Those women really knew how to hide a body :)) Cornbread originated in this part of America, if not of the internet it would probable have stayed here. America has been called a melting pot because we are a nation of immigrates from all over the world. Our food is certainly a sample of the world, we have a little bit of everything here.

I would like to make a suggestion for you to try - forget the flour and the egg and milk, just dredge them in cornmeal. I think you get just as crispy outside, and I think they taste much better. Try it and see what you think. I just take a 2 gal food storage bag, put the corn meal with salt and pepper in that, then toss the slices of tomato in one or two or three, even, at a time, seal the bag, shake it up and then take the slices out. From then on, I do it just like you do.
