I am 67 years old my son got me into weight lifting when he came home from college. Took me to the gym and got me training, dead lifts, squats, bench press, rows and overhead press. I always had a good diet (although I tend to overeat). Really enjoyed Mr. Rippetoe's book Starting Strength and just ordered The Barbell Prescription. I'll turn 68 in a few days and have been training the basic lifts for about 2 months now, before I did a hodgepodge of cardio/bodybuilding/calisthenics irregularly. I feel great. One thing I noticed is moving a 40 lbs bag of dog food is a lot and I mean a lot easier. Could hardly pick it before, now it's like a bag a groceries. Thanks to my son for setting me in the right direction and to Mr. Rippetoe for all the training knowledge.

I am a female close to 60, been lifting heavy for a few years now. I am healthy, do not take any medications. I plan to lift forever, it's part of my life just like brushing teeth and having shower every day. It's true people over 60 need to strength train. I know many people who need it badly, they understand that it's beneficial but I cannot convince them to do it, I even offered to train them, for free! Yet, I have failed so far. I have watched my mum and other elders wither away slowly. The lack of iron from the gym and the lack of iron from red meat is a recipe for weakness and frailty. Yes, red meat, women and the elderly do not consume enough of it due to all the scaremongering and misinformation. The war on red meat, dairy, eggs and veganism is a scourge in our society. Many women live on soy milk and kale/berry smoothies thinking it's healthy and many elderly are on the tea and toast diet even though they can afford good food, I actually know people on the age pension who spend $100-$150 per week on cigarettes. Most people are lazy, they wont even walk, even though walking is a lot easier that lifting heavy weights. I agree with what you say, some people will get the message and take action but the vast majority will not, they prefer to rely on pharmaceutical companies to save them with a magic pill, I actually know someone who prefers to inject insulin rather than train and eat better.

Started with The Barbell Prescription about a year ago and turned 60 in Feb. I can't imagine not lifting again, I love it and what it does for me. My wife is also into it which is great, we turned the garage into a home gym, just waiting on a new garage door so we can fit a full-size power rack in there for better safety over the squat bench/stand we have, now the weights are getting heavier and heavier. Due in a few days and can't wait!

    • @ggrthemostgodless8713
      @ggrthemostgodless8713 Před 5 lety +3

Yes, in the end (no pun intended) the recovery and volume issues are the most manageable things we can manipulate to continue with this. Intensity becomes a relative issue, connected again with recovery, and volume. So 5x3 at first, then 3x5, then 5x3 at 80%, then max day every two weeks, then 5x3 for light day, then 3x5 for volume to force adaptation... and so it goes
I am just glad that no matter what I do I sleep and shit great; all that starts to go wrong as soon as I stop working out for more than a week.

most people simply are too busy being shaken down for every last penny they have and toiling their life away in order to afford to keep living, dealing with general life stuff to have the inclination or ability to pay for a home gym or gym membership and work lifting for 2 or 3 hours 3 or 4 times a week into their schedule which is already as full as it can be. mark is really wrong to propagate this idea that most people are just lazy and dont do anything hard. maybe some very rich people. but most people, working class people, spend the entirety of their life doing things they dont want to do and none of it is a benefit to their health weather you move furniture or are an office worker. to have the free time and extra money to pour into improving yourself like I do is a privelage. and rip laces his legitimate information about strength training with a bunch of bullshit propaganda that has a really negative perception of most people as lazy people and that comes with his elitist mentality.

I am 67 years old and have a PR deadlift of 280. I started about 4 years ago. I recently went to the 5 x 5 routine from doing each set to failure and have seen gains. Plus, the 5 x5 develops a plateau whereas lifting to failure differs almost every time. As I do not like the feeling of a bar on my back, I do lumberjack squats which I believe gives me most of the benefits of a conventional squat.
I am a sample size of one that proves strength training is essential. I take no medications, have no back or shoulder issues. When my back feels a bit out of wack because of household chores, a few deadlifts put it right.
To Rip's point. I lift weights because I enjoy it. People will not do what they don't enjoy. It is as simple as that. I am so fortunate that I actually enjoy picking something heavy off the ground. I do not enjoy golf so I don't play.
One disagreement I have with Rip is Yoga. I do Yoga most days, and I will not lift heavy weights until I have loosened up with yoga. Again, I am a sample size of one, but it makes sense to me. I rely on yoga for body awareness which transcends to weightlifting. Men do not know how to bend over. I learned that at age 60 in yoga. I consider yoga my protective shield against injury. I have the confidence that if I tweak something whether lifting or other activities, yoga will straighten me out.
Give it a try Rick. Or, perhaps you don't want to, just as many men don't want to lift. (ha).

I’m consistently asked ‘why’ I want to lift heavy weights, or I’m told that it’s ‘silly’ at my age, or that I will hurt myself, or some such. I watch friends of my age curling up like dry autumn leaves, legs and backsides wasting away and shoulders rounding - some will ask what they can do about it, but they don’t mean to do anything. I’ve even shown a few how to lift, but not one of them continued to regular lifting. Once I used to evangelise the benefits, but not any more; if they wanted to lift they’d be lifting.

I told her about loaded rotation exercises doing wonders for golfer/tennis elbow issues (saved me when I experienced it from chin ups, still doing it regularly for prevention), I think she literally didn't hear it. There is this persistent belief that if you have something wrong you need to go especially easy, rest, avoid using, etc.

Truth is, it’s hard work. Most people don’t want to work hard. Toot my own horn a little, 5’7, 170. Still do, the 110 dumbells for 10 reps on flat bench. 235 seated military press for 2 reps. 7 plates on leg press for 8, wrapped. Do you want to lift heavy? Then you have to lift heavy. Work hard man!

Old man, sorry you don't train for endurance or strength. 66 years old, work out 7 days a week, bench 155lb every day. Max was 175 before a month off the recover from eye surgery, will be back at that soon enough. At 155lb after a week back in the gym. Started low and just worked back up to be safe. Will try 165lb this week, and aim for 185 by fall and 225 by end of the year.

I misunderstood the title of this video. After decades of intense strength and cardio, X-rays show bone on bone in shoulders, knees and getting there in hips. Pain is almost continual and prevents good sleep. That's why this guy's training is dramatically altered. To train intensely in elder years, you either had to start late or have fabulous conformation and supreme capacity for articular cartilage regeneration.

I guess I have lived my entire life Bass ackwards. I am 65 and now deadlift 450 and front squat 250. Seated hammer strength machine row, 1 arm 225 x 10 for sets. Can’t load more weight. I love training with heavy weight. ( note: I’m 70% disabled vet, effects squats deadlifts the most). Curl 165 strict x 1. My bench is weak. Working on shoulders. Now 70 x3 dumbbells is my max. This is frustrating, because back in the day at Ft. Hood, I could bench 405 just walking into the gym. Enjoy the process. Work. All the best. Always.

I’m 68 and although I’ve done conditioning of some sort almost all of my adult life I’m 10 months into weightlifting programs. I have definitely had amazing results in those 10 months. I’m going home to my country in a few weeks with further ambitions. I will be joining a gym and starting the 5x5 program. My off days will be minimal cardio because if I do nothing I get bored and my diet goes to hell. The way for seniors is to lift heavy for fewer reps. There’s enough scientific studies out there to prove this. I have no pain or injuries anywhere in my body..which is bs luck considering all that I’ve done in my life. I can hardly wait to begin the 5x5.

Strolling on the treadmill; throwing in a few lightweight bicep curls; some silly hip thrusts and stretches then that's it, they go home! All they care about is looking thin and not getting strong. Meanwhile at 62 I'm 1.5-2 hours going through my Starting Strength program and getting stronger every week.

How would I persuade my father that strength training is important? He's 60 years old in the gym 1-3 times a week but seems to have completely missed the memo on progressive overload and has not progressed from a 115 lb bench press and thinks walking is the best leg exercise for old age. I know he is physically capable of training to much heavier weights, but he insists that he's "doing enough" and that his "goals are different" so it's not beneficial for him to develop a competent level of strength to stave off aging. I love my dad and I want him to be physically free as long as possible.

The heavy lifts coupled with time under tension ( I do my 3x5, : 5 down : 5 hold : 1 up ) and isometrics ( example holding my squat in the bucket : 20 ) have greatly enhanced my grappling. The Transverse Plane / Coiling work should be a big focus as well as you get older. Stay rotational my friends.

Doesn't have to be a Starting Strength gym, either. Running, mobility training, and strength training with the floor, a pullup bar, and gymnastic rings work just fine, if what you're after is health in your 60s and beyond. There are lots of options for a healthy lifestyle, so you need not feel bound by a dislike of some particular activity, as long as you're willing to get active consistently.

The first problem is that human aren't able to take care about they health situation in the future already today. The human nature isnt defined through the capability of planning for the far future. The second problem is that the most people had sport last time at school and forgot about how it feels. So there is only way to prevent the immobility or other issues of older persons to educate and to train soon enough. I'm sure it is possible to change the human behavior in general and In my opinion schools would be the perfect place to start.
