I visited the Sutherland observatory in South Africa and it was the most awe-inspiring moment of my life. Seeing the web of constellations hanging above your head in the dead of night brings you to your knees. It literally did with me! Especially as a light-polluted European, I can't believe how robbed we are of that night sky. It's like looking directly into God! The natural world is humbling beyond belief. When it's untampered and simply there to be, it's wonderful.

I served in the army for 4 years. The training ground where we trained a lot was basically 1 big forest with a couple of open plains and roads for heavy vehicles. I remember walking with my brothers in patrol deep in the night and just feeling this bliss. The peace and wonder of the silent forest at night. The cool breeze and sounds of branches moving in the wind. The clean and refreshing air that I breathed. I felt so at ease there. I have now been out of the army for nearly a year and my body is screaming to get back in those forests. I miss those days sooooo much.

I was staying in Boulder, CO for a month. I’ve lived near city/suburbs my whole life. I drove to the top of a mountain at night and got out of the car and looked straight up and it almost felt like my heart stopped. I couldn’t believe the view of the stars

I live on 5 acres about 60 miles out of town. Even just rural living feels more relaxing, hearing the birds in the morning, seeing the heat of the day come in, the deer coming out to eat in the evening, and eventually bugs chirping while I look at the stars. I live about 75 miles outside of NYC. Never minded the commute because it was just great to see the stars at night. It was relief to just hear nature at night & not traffic noise 🌞
Almost every time I visit an open camp ground or head out to the county forest at night, and hear the wind rushing through the trees. Hearing all the leaves brush and fly along the ground. Hiking to the summit of a mountain and camping there is just like Joe said magical! It’s so peaceful being out in the woods with nature especially at night when you see the stars!
this was such a great, healing episode. For some reason, since Louie never went on JRE a lot of fans got the impression they didn't like eachother. But the whole episode they just respected eachother, and had these hilarious little moments. It was awe inspiring.

There was a time when I hadn't been out in the wilderness for a few years, and then a friend of mine invited me to a nature preserve, and I cannot begin to tell you that when I walked into the middle of the woods and heard absolutely nothing, all of a sudden I felt the most calm and least anxious I had felt in a long time.

@Indrid Cold I got drunk one night camping. It was about 18 degrees, I wound up walking a mile back to the house at 2am. It was mostly up hill so I stopped and rested. I remember the quiet and the moon light. There was a lite breeze and the trees were so cold they were creaking. I remember it being serene and I almost fell asleep. (Which would not have been good).
This is one of the big reasons I had to move away from southern california after being born/raised in the north east. In hindsight, I think my brain just could not become accustomed to the lack of queues I was getting from my surroundings and nature. Seasons don't really happen there (at least from my perspective). Sure, the temperature would drop a bit in the winter, and it would be warmer in the summer but the lack of extreme weather kind of got to me. My first year there, I procrastinated my Christmas shopping so hard I almost missed being able to give people their gifts on time just because it didn't hit me that Christmas was around the corner in 75 degree weather. I know this is very subjective, but to Louis' point, having grown up with the full expression of all 4 seasons I took for granted how much it helped me mentally organize my time and feel the passage of time itself. In LA I felt like time wasn't really passing but simultaneously flying by and it got existential pretty quick lol.

I went to my LDS friend's wedding in Logan, UT about 5 years ago. Anyone who's been to Logan can tell you how spectacular the view of the Rocky Mountains is. The one thing I will never forget while there was how relaxed I was the whole time. Even while our whole group was rushing like crazy to finish up preparations for the wedding itself, I never felt more at ease. I'll always love my home in Texas, but being next to mountains is magical.

I lived in Los Angeles for 61 years then moved to Southwest Michigan in 75 acres of woods and nature and it is absolutely wonderful. After a few months there's a whole stress level removed that you didn't realize was there.

I went to the Himalayas recently, and saw mountains that looked like the planet's guts spewed out into the sky. Tall, naked, without a hint of greenery. Massive, but ever changing. Like Joe said, makes you realise you're nothing. Quite humbling.

A lot of the ancient civilizations structures were also built to serve as calendars. We take for granted that at any given time we know EXACTLY how many days it will be before winter begins.
When I visited Hawaii’s big island I took a stargazing tour to the spot Joe referenced, totally worth the $400 fee. It was 85 degrees at the base of the mountain and by the time you get to the top there is snow on the ground. Watching the sunset above the clouds and then seeing the sky light up with millions of stars is something I’ll never forget, and will prob never experience that feeling again in my life. Better high than any I’ve got from hallucinogens. Would highly recommend for anyone traveling there.

Even in west Virginia when I was younger. Born 1983, I could see so much more of the night sky than you can see now. I realized back about 2002 how much of a difference in how many stars and even some of the center of milky way gasses could be seen at times. Me and my brother recently went mountain biking. Stop for a bit on top of the mountain and beyond was just endless mountains. Couldn't even image what it would have been like to travel them 100 years ago with zero technology. Insane.

Driving through Arizona once..... at night, out in the middle of no where.... & OMG the night sky was just exploding with stars..... like nothing I ever saw before.... you can actually see the milky way... it was mesmerizing.... it was almost like there was no "sky" at all, just stars..... so beautiful
This reminds me when i went on safari in Kenya for my honeymoon - sleeping in a tent on a nature reserve, having to cross a river with crocs and hippos everyday to get to our accomodation - im not one for mumbo jumbo, but the inner peace and connection I felt being in a place where man is secondary to nature and I could legit be eaten was something I will never forget. I felt the most at peace but at the same time felt so alive compared to my decade+ living in a cities.

I hiked up to the observatory Joe talks about with my entire company when I was in the Marines. We were training the new guys for Afghanistan. We had finished the entire training element of 45 days with a new Company Commander that was former force recon. I was near the end of my enlistment and had done more hikes with full gear than I can count. I always did poorly under full weight bc I was so skinny, but this was a day-pack hike. I performed extremely well. Tons of guys dropped due to altitude sickness and other reasons. At the top there was snow, which is kind of wild to think of being in Hawaii. Several of us got to tour the observatory on the way down. One of my favorite memories. Golf Co, 2/3

I love these conversations I wish people talk like this more often. When I was younger it seemed like these conversations were brought up a lot but the older I get most people just don't care about the universe or nature they just care about their phone or talking about the next cultural political narratives. This just inspired me to take my kid out into nature this weekend. I have to start making a point where I don't just go on a nature walk for an hour or two but plan a day in the woods. Everybody needs to plan at least one day in the woods at least every couple months if not more here one full day find somewhere where you can fish find somewhere where you can have shade and sun when you want it bring some food shovels anything you can think of to be able to engage in nature. Sweet content. I stayed for awhile with the Healers in the Philippines - the ones who can remove cysts and tumors from your body, who offer psychic seeing into your future. I went from a city with nearly 2 million for most of my life. To a place with 20,000 people in Tropical Australia. The first thing you notice is how much more of the night sky you can see away from all that un natural light in the city. You go from seeing a few 100 stars in the city, to tens of thousands and can even see the gas in the milky way.

I did the whole city life thing in my 20s. My wife and I saved money for years and paid off as much debt as possible. I visited the Sutherland observatory in South Africa and it was the most awe-inspiring moment of my life. Seeing the web of constellations hanging above your head in the dead of night brings you to your knees. It literally did with me! Especially as a light-polluted European, I can't believe how robbed we are of that night sky. It's like looking directly into God! The natural world is humbling beyond belief. When it's untampered and simply there to be, it's wonderful.

I served in the army for 4 years. The training ground where we trained a lot was basically 1 big forest with a couple of open plains and roads for heavy vehicles.
I remember walking with my brothers in patrol deep in the night and just feeling this bliss. The peace and wonder of the silent forest at night. The cool breeze and sounds of branches moving in the wind. The clean and refreshing air that I breathed. I felt so at ease there.
I have now been out of the army for nearly a year and my body is screaming to get back in those forests. I miss those days sooooo much.

I live on 5 acres about 60 miles out of town. Even just rural living feels more relaxing, hearing the birds in the morning, seeing the heat of the day come in, the deer coming out to eat in the evening, and eventually bugs chirping while I look at the stars. This is one of the big reasons I had to move away from southern california after being born/raised in the north east. In hindsight, I think my brain just could not become accustomed to the lack of queues I was getting from my surroundings and nature. Seasons don't really happen there (at least from my perspective). Sure, the temperature would drop a bit in the winter, and it would be warmer in the summer but the lack of extreme weather kind of got to me.
My first year there, I procrastinated my Christmas shopping so hard I almost missed being able to give people their gifts on time just because it didn't hit me that Christmas was around the corner in 75 degree weather. I know this is very subjective, but to Louis' point, having grown up with the full expression of all 4 seasons I took for granted how much it helped me mentally organize my time and feel the passage of time itself. In LA I felt like time wasn't really passing but simultaneously flying by and it got existential pretty quick lol.

I went to my LDS friend's wedding in Logan, UT about 5 years ago. Anyone who's been to Logan can tell you how spectacular the view of the Rocky Mountains is. The one thing I will never forget while there was how relaxed I was the whole time. Even while our whole group was rushing like crazy to finish up preparations for the wedding itself, I never felt more at ease. I'll always love my home in Texas, but being next to mountains is magical.
I live in rural Texas, in the northern hill country. As beautiful as where I am is it will never compare to the rockies.

I lived in Los Angeles for 61 years then moved to Southwest Michigan in 75 acres of woods and nature and it is absolutely wonderful. After a few months there's a whole stress level removed that you didn't realize was there.

I spent 90 days in the wilderness when I was 18 (now 32). I've never been able to fully adjust back to front country life since being so oriented to nature's pace.

I went to the Himalayas recently, and saw mountains that looked like the planet's guts spewed out into the sky. Tall, naked, without a hint of greenery. Massive, but ever changing. Like Joe said, makes you realise you're nothing. Quite humbling.

When I visited Hawaii’s big island I took a stargazing tour to the spot Joe referenced, totally worth the $400 fee. It was 85 degrees at the base of the mountain and by the time you get to the top there is snow on the ground. Watching the sunset above the clouds and then seeing the sky light up with millions of stars is something I’ll never forget, and will prob never experience that feeling again in my life. Better high than any I’ve got from hallucinogens. Would highly recommend for anyone traveling there.

Me and my brother recently went mountain biking. Stop for a bit on top of the mountain and beyond was just endless mountains. Couldn't even image what it would have been like to travel them 100 years ago with zero technology. Insane.

This reminds me when i went on safari in Kenya for my honeymoon - sleeping in a tent on a nature reserve, having to cross a river with crocs and hippos everyday to get to our accomodation - im not one for mumbo jumbo, but the inner peace and connection I felt being in a place where man is secondary to nature and I could legit be eaten was something I will never forget. I hiked up to the observatory Joe talks about with my entire company when I was in the Marines. We were training the new guys for Afghanistan. We had finished the entire training element of 45 days with a new Company Commander that was former force recon. I was near the end of my enlistment and had done more hikes with full gear than I can count. I always did poorly under full weight bc I was so skinny, but this was a day-pack hike. I performed extremely well. Tons of guys dropped due to altitude sickness and other reasons. At the top there was snow, which is kind of wild to think of being in Hawaii. I love these conversations I wish people talk like this more often. When I was younger it seemed like these conversations were brought up a lot but the older I get most people just don't care about the universe or nature they just care about their phone or talking about the next cultural political narratives. This just inspired me to take my kid out into nature this weekend. I have to start making a point where I don't just go on a nature walk for an hour or two but plan a day in the woods. After speaking with this one truly holy man all day, I would retire to the back of the church (I'd been given a little room inside where I could sleep), and I would sit outside at night, just gazing up at the stars. The night was black where they lived - no lights. The stars filled the night sky. I would just sit, and stare, at the stars, until 'sleepy dust' filled my eyes, and I would go inside, crawl under the mosquito netting, turn out my flashlight, and drift away.

I went from a city with nearly 2 million for most of my life. To a place with 20,000 people in Tropical Australia. The first thing you notice is how much more of the night sky you can see away from all that un natural light in the city. You go from seeing a few 100 stars in the city, to tens of thousands and can even see the gas in the milky way.

I did the whole city life thing in my 20s. My wife and I saved money for years and paid off as much debt as possible. Last year at 31 my wife and I bought a small farm on 12 acres out near a national forest. I dont think I can ever go back to listening to fart can exhausts fly down the road. Now we just hear crickets and birds all day.

You can reasonably buy that with a $70k salary out here, but you do deal with a couple months of winter which some people dont want. I'll take a nice house and land over weather, and honestly it isnt bad out here.
