This was a really exciting experiment to run today. Big K vs Globaltic (a new brand of charcoal to me).
The video says it all but to summarise:
    2 charcoals
2 rump steaks - from John Turners Butchers this time
Salt Pepper Garlic Seasoning (home mixed)
    2 Natural firelighters
    1 Weber BBQ
    1 Judge
    1 Winner
    Globaltic: £18.00 for 10kg
Chunkier blocks that have stayed whole in transit
    Lighter
    Lit quicker
    Burns hotter and faster
    Grey Ash
    Waste charcoal at the end
Taste - good but no difference
    Virtually no smoke
    100% natural
    Origin - Eastern Europe
    Big K: £19.99 for 12kg
Burns hotter for longer and retained the heat
    Stayed lit for longer
    White Ash
    Less waste at the end
    Taste - good no difference
    Little smoke
    100% natural
    Origin - Karelia (Finland/Russia)
    Overall winner:
This was hard as at points one was vastly in front of the other, it was a bit like the tortoise and the hare in a way.
As I say in the video, I think this is the best outcome becuase they are two exceptional charcoals that actually achieve two different result. It really was interesting day to see how differently these perform through a cook.
    Thanks to both.

Greetings from Somerset, know john thorners well, I think the bigger chunks give more airflow, the reason for the quicker burn after light up

It definitely will give better air flow. What you want for a low and slow is charcoal make from a nice dense wood, or something compressed, depends on what you are cooking and on what too.

Hey mate. I can get 15kg of Big BCH15 for £25 or Globaltic 10kg for £20. Is the latter worth the extra?

Personally, I didn’t rate the globaltic range and I actually thought they had gone bust, but apparently not. I do think it’s worth paying extra for the Big K stuff and it might even make a good video to compare the two

I tried Globaltic and liked it enough to buy a load more. In my experience it is good charcoal; it does, as you proved, leave chunks, which imo is fine as long as it does the job of cooking what you want. For higher temps, searing etc it’s ace, but for low & slow cooks maybe a bit less reliable.

I'm a Big K convert, for their restaurant grade lump anyway. Burns hot and long, I use this over briquettes for the medium length cooks now. Really impressed with it to be fair. Tempted to give the Globaltic a try because why not! But Big K is great.

Ideally you need the charcoal in two seperate bbqs to get the taste of each without one contaminating the other. Also for an accurate reading on the temperature & how its sustained over time. Is Globaltic as widely available as Big K in the supermarkets? Ive used Weber briquettes but they also do lumpwood which i only buy online when ordering other bits to get the free postage.

All good points. I find with GLOBALTIC your always got the yellow ash afterwards which put me off.

Hi, Was the Globaltic the same size chunks all the way down the bag ?

    • @HunterGathererCooking
      @HunterGathererCooking  Před 4 lety +1

Hi Den no they are MUCH bigger. Burns just as hot but but doesn’t burn all the way through, you get left with chunks. Does that help?

      @denlyon1 Před 4 lety +1

It does, thanks. Was the bag bought by you with Globaltic having no knowledge that you would be using it on a video?
