In Indonesia, the ocean plays a critical role in people’s livelihood; from their food to their careers. But that important life source is under threat from overwhelming amounts of plastic.
Unfortunately, this pollution is fueled from one of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations, Bali. This, combined with plastic from the rest of the world, washes up on beaches, gets hooked by local fishermen, and damages marine ecosystems.
This film follows Wayan, a 90-year-old Balinese fisherman using all his resources and knowledge to tackle this growing problem, one net of trash at a time.
This is Voice Above Water, a production from Turning Tides Films.

Richer communities need to take responsibilities and actions to preventing and removing pollution because they are hurting poorer communities in the process.

It’s not really about the rich vs poor. It’s about the ignorance of the general population. As Indonesian myself, I can tell u a lot of Indonesians are still ignorant in terms of polluting the environment.

Thanks for making this documentary. As an Indonesian myself, this is an important concern as Indonesia’s territory is composed of more water than land. I think the concern should be raised to the government and general population in order to protect the sea ecosystem as a lot of Indonesians still ignorant when it comes to pollutions.

Although a sad reality that we witness waste pollute out planet, us humans are still part of this nature as a whole, and however we try to separate our species from it, thinking we are special, that these "bad" things we do as humans are our own conscious decisions, we still are undeniably part of this planets ecosystem and in a way may just be playing our part in this universe's story. Maybe someday the planet shall have use of the waste we leave behind long after we are gone.
