  • It occured to me that the rising generation of pipers in the regiment haven't worn Full Dress, so I'd better show them how to tie the full-dress plaid in the 'Seaforth' manner.
The damn' button popped off, but my apprentice had to leave soon so we just carried on...

I never knew how these full plaids were put on until this video! Thanks, Rob! Excellent job. Aye, this is a grand look, but hard to play in, and that brooch can cause awful scratches on the drones. But the style! I'm sad that we don't see dressier uniforms in modern civilian pipe bands, but the military fashion influence seems to have faded considerably in the last generation or two, partly due to cost, partly I think due to fewer pipers with military experience or background.

I definitely can second the comment about scratching up my pipes from a plaid brooch, my pipes have more then a few scratches on them because of one. One positive thing I will say about the piper's plaid, is occasionally getting to use it to cover your hands (or at least your left hand) when you're at a relaxed position and standing for a long period in the cold.

Colonel David Murray once described it as "the least-suitable clothing in which to play the pipes ", or words to that effect

That is a very different way to how we tie them.

I'm not familiar with how the other Canadian kilted regiments tie theirs, but - given the strong influence of 2nd Seaforth* in the raising of our regiment - it's very likely that this is how the 78th/2nd Seaforth tied theirs ca.1909.
*RHQ Seaforth at Fort George was deeply involved, and from all indicators I believe that the 'OPI' - the British officer leading the committee - was 2nd Seaforth.
