Something interesting, If we're going with the Original Moorcock dichotomy of law and chaos, I'd argue that Orcus' end game is far more Lawful than Chaotic. Chaos is all about creative destruction while Orcus' dream of a silent sterile dead world is more in line with the Ultimate end point of Law.
Recalling my memories of Planescape, it is actually the ultimate goal of all demons to destroy everything and everyone else in the multiverse so that only they remain. I suppose at the end of the day, they just want to ensure that entropy takes hold and destroys everything (except them of course), which does make them quite lawful since they are just ensuring that the natural end of the multiverse comes to fruition.
@@DumpStat if entropy (Ygorl)takes Hold of and destroys the universe, Orcus would not care, but nonetheless this would fulfill /suit Orcus's plans and vision for things. Law or Chaos means nothing to Orcus.Orcus does not care.
2nd edition is still the best
In the Fifth Edition, I like the way Orcus has become the conceptual embodiment of Despondency, sloth and despair. He hates life because it's noisy and full of pain. He hates the gods, because they maintain the existence of this life and force the living to undergo trials. He takes advantage of the despair of people whose loved ones were not resurrected according to some "higher principles" incomprehensible to mortals. On top of that, he's also lazy and fat. Seriously. In general, he became very interesting precisely when he was made more philosophical, as befits a being from the Outer Planes. One of the few things 5e did right.

@@djseggrighfscu1616 That is a good way to start, the premade modules make DMing simpler, I still run them from time to time
Not sure what makes you say +3 weapons were nearly non existent in ad&d. If you had a recent lvl character we sometimes had more than one.
5e is designed so that power comes from your PCs abilities so magic items are an after thought.
In ad&d you often got just hp and a slightly better to hit role. You needed magic items to survive.
change in focus of game design. previous editions, pcs were just a tad above normal(if not normal) who quested for fame and wealth. 3e was probably the zenith of "its not who you are, its what magic stuff you have." 5e has taken the pc being way beyond normal, and i do agree. i miss the older editions where death was a very real threat and combat wasnt always the best option.

you say Orcus is argueably the most famous Demon Lord... Orcus does not care. caring about "Fame" is a concession that what mortals do or think matters...Orcus knows it does not.
