- GM 4L80-E Transmission Rebuild - Transmission Repair
Here is a full rebuild video of a GM 4L80-E Transmission. We see the parts that took for a successful repair. Complete overhaul kit with clutches and steels and molded pistons. All bushings as well.
There's some items that I personally would've add to the parts list but since this is for a Transmission Shop down the road this is what I was provided with.
Items I would add are:
Actuator Feed limit Valve, Transgo.
TCC Regulator Valve Kit from Sonnax.
1-2 & 3-4 Shift Valve Springs from Sonnax.
TCC PWM Solenoid.
EPC Solenoid.
And Shift Solenoids if needed. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I just got done building my 4l80e, while watching this video. Never even opened one up before. You took all the guess work out of what you were doing. Nice vid and thanks a lot for taking the time to post it up!
How did it workout?
@@fmanion24 well, I did okay. My big problem was doing it at a friend's house over a month. Do it in a weekend and label EVERYTHING! Also pay attention to part orientation
Thanks for the comment. How's it holding up? Would you rebuild one again or just buy a rebuilt one?
@@23steph13 it is working fine! Only problem I've developed is I lost engine braking in 2nd gear. Can't figure it out. No solid answers on line yet
@@jasonbath3617 Hey Jason. Just read this. Congrats on being able to rebuild the tranny yourself, that's the ultimate DIY task... Regarding your engine brake issue... You should be able to solve this with tranny still in the truck. Typically on 4l80's the 2-1 servo set is the culprit for that. I'm assuming your brake band is in good shape.

Sometimes the piston will bottom out before the pin pushes on the brake band. This can be caused by wear or using an aftermarket band. Replace with the kit i listed above. Once again, this is assuming that the brake band was installed correctly and isnt worn smooth
This is the best 2 hours I have spent on CZcams in a long time Hiram. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. You give the novice and DIY guy an idea of how much time it takes for the seasoned professional to do the job. Many techniques used here apply to other transmission rebuilds. Great info for the new and the experienced rebuilder. Next video, would you highlight some of your tooling for us? I would like to see which brand and style of snap ring pliers you like most and why. I would also like to see more of the shop tooling and facilities too. I have the same issue with my workbench lighting here. The workspace is well lit for the eyes, but not so great for pics and videos. If you know anyone with a studio lighting kit, such as an ARRI setup, invite them over for an experiment. Upload a 5 minute test video for comparison. Awesome work!
This is a great video! Especially using ordinary shop tools instead of the high-dollar specialty ones the rebuild and service manuals lead you to believe you can't get this rebuild done without them. I wish half the stuff I learned mechanic wise was explained as clearly and concisely as this video explains the 4L80E! Thank you for working on this and posting a great reference!
This video was amazingly informative and highly detailed, Hiram! Thank you so very much for all of your help in guiding me through the process of tearing down and rebuilding my 4L80e. I never once imagined the task being so straightforward.
Wow, That's the best video I've seen in a long time. Thank you so much. 2 hours of your time. Much appreciated.
There is no way I could have gotten my 80e build and back on the road with confidence with out your help! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this and keeping the hotrodding diy vibe alive and well
This video has been more help than you can imagine.
There are things in this transmission that were not in the older ones, and the books fail at that point.
Thanks for posting this, it's excellent reference material!!!
Hiram, you are the man! I couldn't have done my recent 4L80E rebuild without you, bud. Thank you for the best 4L80E video on the internet...
Excellent video. You spent an enormous amount of time documenting this. My only recommendation would be to NEVER drill anything at your assembly table. I cringed when I saw you drilling out that drain hole in the pump casing on your assembly table, right next to an open bucket of assembly lube. Cast iron dust is extremely abrasive and goes everywhere. Best to do all the drilling, grinding and filing at another table, or even better in another room. I am a machinist and know nothing about rebuilding automatic transmissions. Thanks for sharing your trade.
thanks a lot Hiram for taking the time to make these videos, ive been starting to do transmissions on the side now for a couple years, and had very good success because of your videos, thanks again
loved the video. just spent 2 hours on my saturday watching start to finish. my 95 gmc has this unit and i have an old one in the garage i was thinking about rebuilding now that i've done an engine swap. i really like how you used regular tools anyone has to get the job done. great job!
Thank You so much for giving your hard earned knowledge and valuable time sir.
Hiram, I want to thank you for posting this video. I found this and one other to be the most informative and helpful for disassembly/reassembly. Just completed my own 4L80E in my RV and installed the HD2 shift kit and Sonnax fix it kit. Mine had the ubiquitous no reverse/weak reverse. Tried to fix it by working on the actuator rod and reverse piston. Did not work so total teardown. Found the direct clutch seized to the hub. The piston was eroded/ worn out and caused partial engagement of the direct drum which roasted the frictions and steels in the direct drum. Got it back together yesterday and it runs great. Shifts smooth and firm. Could not have done it without you. Kudos.
Hiram is the best. you can tell he has done many of these. I rebuilt mine after watching him do it several times. My trannny works flawlessly. Thanks Man. Couldn't do it without you.
Hiram you're awesome! Thank you for taking your time to teach your immense knowledge. I really appreciate what you do and your videos have taught me a lot.
I wanted to say a genuine thank you for making these videos you are helping people
I recently just re-built my first transmission almost 100% from following this video along the entire build. I used the ATSG manual to help with specs and such but other than this this is a fantastic how to video, and Initially it was this video that made me confident enough to tackle the 4l80-E in my 1 Ton 4x4 K3500. thank you very much sir!
Would you do it again or buy a rebuilt one?
Your sealing ring trick is awesome. Just finished my build . I used a good amount trans fluid/trans gel mix and just slid it in gently and let it sit
I'm 1:18 minutes in but it's by far the best video. I'm confident I'll have no problem building my 4l80. Thank you
Thank you so much for your videos! Thank you for showing your mistakes as well. So often people aren't willing to show this and believe it or not it's valuable to see them. Best Regards to you!! You Rock!
A million tear down videos, very few real build videos , 110% thank you .
Hiram, I enjoy your videos. I love watching a master at work!
LOL! First thank you for taking the time to make this video! Second and this may seem strange…….. I am hooked on the “Atta Boyyyy”!!! I have been a professional mechanic for well over 30 years. I have slowly been taking on more and more transmission work and the shop I am working for now has been very supportive, even though my speed isn’t quite there yet. Anyway I find myself pushing through things I get hung up on and giving myself an Atta Boy now!!! It’s crazy but it kind of helps!
Great job Hiram!!! I just completed on with your help and advice and it came out great. Thanks again for this video and your channel in general.
I've done a 4L60E and a 700R4 (basically the same lol) it surprised me how different this unit is. I'll be into one soon, thank you for this video. I'm alot less scared and lost lol
ive been subscribed to you for awhile. Your a great people person man i think your a great guy for uploading this for the guys that dont know or want to learn.
Thank you. I've built transmissions for over 20 yrs and I built so many that have original bushings in them. Had guys tell me oh they're ok they're not failed or worn. BS! Replace them.
this video is very much appreciated...it truly helps the middle class save some money while there already down with a hurt transmission, thank you Sir for your great video
Your video is AMAZING!!!! So glad you made it! You are a great person. I rebuilt my whole transmission with your video. I tried with the ATSG manual and made it a page. With your video it was honestly a piece of cake. You showed honest great tips that they dont show it the book and you proved that all the special tools were not needed. Do you have a paypal I can send you some money to?
Can't add anymore positives than has already been said. Hiram you are a class act. Thank You.
I watched this video and referenced this video while assembling mine. Thanks for the awesome video...albeit, I'm not done. lol
I will say, a video on bushings would be nice
Thank you so much for this video. This was a HUGE help in getting my transmission back together. Excellent job, two thumbs up.
Really liked the video Hiram. I don't know how you managed to work so late and then not drop any F bombs after the check balls and manual valve engagement issues. I didn't mind the length one bit. You helped me with my 4R70W build.
Keep 'em coming!
Thanks for showing the orientation of the inside seal of the direct clutch.
I was suspicious of a previous rebuild that had the seal in the wrong way.
Thanks for this! Finally got everything back in my 4l80e thanks to this video. Appreciate it!
Very detailed information about 4L80E transmission. Am very exited
I have watched your videos before and I have rebuilt a 4L60-E thanks to your very simple and widely explanatory shots and tricks. I am now really looking forward to rebuilding my 4L80-E in my dually because I feel more than confidant to do the complete job and know it will be proper! Thanks Hiram!!
i just finished rebuilding my 4L80E transmission for my truck... and it drives BEAUTIFUL!! i followed everything in your video and watched it numerous times to make sure i didnt miss anything. you are awesome!

Awesome video my friend!! Clearly detailed explanation of all components and function. One of the best on utube!
By far the best 4l80e build video on youtube. Thank you
Another great video! Lots of useable ideas here. Thanks Hiram!
props, most people do not want to display assembly. Takes a lot of effort.
mad respect to you sir!!!! thank you for your time and sharing this video!!!!
Forget about the Beer Belly dude you did a Helluva~ job with "Technical Highlights about installing Bushings - Seal Rings & Piston Seals!" Ride-on Bro.
Thanks a million and I’ll let you know how it went. Great videos please keep them coming. It’s a blessing that you would upload them for other to learn. I live on the island and we don’t have classes that go this deep. So I say again Great videos thanks a million.

How do you remember all that you are a absolute genius!!!!!!
My 4L80's torque converter clutch self destructed back in Dec 2013, tiny fibers were all throughout the whole transmission. Shifts were bone jarring. I swapped in a rebuilt trans. You might be working on my old trans :o)

Hi Hiram, your videos are awesome man! I'm learning a lot about automatics, thank you.
I have a 4l80e in a grumman olson p/30 stepvan, the transmission was completely rebuilt, now I'm experiencing harsh 1 to 2 gear change, all the other changes work fine (2-3 and 3-4), very smooth. I can use some advise on what to start looking to solve this issue.
Thanks again!
Hiram I can't thank you enough for your time in making this video! Very easy to tell that you are a master at your craft! Ive built many engines and this is my first trans, without your video I would be completely lost. Top notch Bro! I do have two questions 1) the seals that go in through the valve body, I didn't remove these and I didn't get them in the shift kit or rebuild kit, are they necessary or required? 2) With new Alto Steels, is there prep that should be done prior to install? They appear to have black paint on them. Thanks a Million!
I'm from Indian this video is very helpful for me thank you so much sir
This is what a professional looks like.
Great Video very helpful ur now a Fav
