4L80E Tear Down & Common Problems

  • In this video, Curt goes through how to tear down a 4L80E. Then he talks about the common problems found in this transmission and the solutions to those problems. Most issues are seen when the transmission is overheating or is starved for oil. This can happen in early models because of the positioning of the coolant lines. Some drums can develop ring grooves from Teflon rings which would lose lubrication and cause the planetary to burn up. Finally, sometimes the clutches on the drum will slip and cause grooves in the drum which can cause the clutches to only apply partially or not apply at all.

    Mr Curt, my 4l80e kicks out of 4th gear but I have a elm327 hooked up to an app on my phone and can get real time info and codes. And when I reset my check engine light and code with my app, even while driving, the transmission gets 4th gear back and doesn't have an issue until about 3-5 min later and jumps out of 4th gear again if I go up the slightest hill. But right as I reset the codes, there could be a huge hill in front of me and the transmission will hold in 4th, all the way up.
    It sometimes even happens while driving at the same speed I have been, no hills or dips, it just kicks out of 4th.
    Is it the torque converter?

    I have a 2004 Sierra 2500HD with this trans. I pull an 8600lb 5th wheel. The truck had 200K miles when I got it. Attempted a trip to Texas yesterday with the camper when the trans got hot. We limped it back home, allowing it to cool before starting again. Never had issues before yesterday. What could cause this to suddenly happen?

      I would perform a full DIAG on the vehicle to see if you may have any electrical issues and also what codes come up with the Transmission you could have bad solenoids a bad harness or could be internal next step would be to perform a Full Vehicle DIAG to see what it could be. My 4l80e on 2000 GMC C3500 has a leaking plug, when it fills with oil i lose the overdrive and have jerky shift from 1 to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, when i blow out the plug with air compressor it drives great! Has anyone experienced it? is it the wicking of oil through the plug or is it the outer o-ring seal?

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  Před 3 lety +2

      Sounds like the Clip around the Plug/Connector is broken and this will allow for fluid to get into the Plug/connector I would suggest taking a look at your harness and make sure it is not damaged. So drop the Pan and pull Harness Plug from the Case to check if the plastic clips are broken off around it.

    I just recently put a 4l80e on my Silverado 1500 , has a 5.3 motor. Well the transmission I got was used and now truck won't move forward at all.... reverse still works (weak) but obviously the transmission was shot, question is, what caused this? Torque converter? What does a repair kit for this transmission cost? I should mention truck came out of the shop working but it definitely didn't feel right, felt restraint or sluggish, dragging ass if u will, and I knew something wasn't right because my truck makes fairly decent power, so that's how it started, then 3 weeks later just got worse and now it wont move forward.....use to have a 4l60 on it before and truck was quick and would even dig out like crazy from a complete stop....truck has a tune, long tube headers, cold intake, msd wires, 411 gears in differential..... with the 4l80 it wouldn't even spin the tires, ever. Help

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  Před 2 lety +1

      Check that the shop re-pinned and flashed for a 4l80. The overdrive sprag could also cause the issues if it's starting to fail.

    • @josevenegas2319
      @josevenegas2319 Před 2 lety

      @@MonsterTransmission ok... when they swapped the transmission to the 4l80, I know they ran some wires and pinned it to the computer I believe ( 23 and 24 I think) then they programmed some sort of file or tune so that it would work and shift with the 4l80... but like I said, truck felt sluggish when I picked it up at the shop, all the guys did at the shop was the upgrade and install, since the transmission was used and i didn't even buy it off of them, they take no responsibility if the transmission gas existing issues....makes sense.
      .. so I came to the conclusion that the transmission was bad or about to give out... when I drove it off the shop it shifted all gears right, but it felt like my torque was weak when I punched the gas.... and my truck is fast. My truck use to dig hard with the 4l60 before, even spun the tires a little shifting into 2nd... with this 4l80, all I got acceleration and engine noise but my take off was sluggish... no dig at all... my take on the matter is that 1st gear was slipping all along that's why truck had no strong take off ... who knows what other gears were bad, or clutches or whatever the case is, all I know is that now, it wont move forward... just reverse and even my reverse is a little weak.... so I'm wondering on a repair kit... or maybe just get another 4l80 altogether.... and my other question is if I should rebuild or rebuy a stock one... would a stock one do for my set up? No performance cam or turbos or nothing in the truck, yet. Just a powerful 5.3 with a performance tune, long tube headers, cold intake, 4.11 gears in differential and MSD wiring cables.... my previous 4l60 transmission that broke had all the perks though, Corvette servo, shift kit and some racing performance kit all through out, ( thought I'd mention that as well ) .... and that transmission broke due to my driveshaft busting, it broke the back end of my tranny along with it..... so yeah, stuck here not knowing what to do... rebuild or rebuy another 4l80? Will stock do? And whats a ballpark figure on a stock rebuild kit and a performance rebuild kit
      ..thanks
