Definitely the definition of milking a project
It’s a plane for sale could use some rescuing
It’s a 1964 piper cherokee pa28
Did Dimitri used to be a CFI at veracity aviation in Pearland, TX?
When I first started watching this channel about saving the 401, I was afraid the end point of the project would be some engine work, and just a clean up for the rest of the airplane. I had no idea of the money, material resources, and energy available to back the project. Although the story of the restoration has become an odyssey in itself, the amount of care and detail to make this aircraft fly again is immensely impressive. This plane will actually be better than brand new from the factory! A “shout out” to all of the dedicated people making this a reality, with maybe a gold star 💫 next to Joe’s name.
We definitely went into this unassuming, but it's been an amazing and life changing project!
@@rebuildrescue
Yep, turned into a little more than the take a vacuum to it to get all the bird stuff out, a new set of plugs and go flying.
its not a cessna 401 anymore, it should be renamed, a jojo401.5😂
Quite an incredible journey! Thanks for taking the time to document it, this is a series that is definitely worth watching. I worked at an aerospace contractor that maintained the fleet of F/A-18 figther aircraft for 20 years, so this is very interesting for me. Oh, and watch your heads, those sharp profiles can cut, especially when the control surfaces are coming back on the plane. If I were to make a suggestion, use pool noodles over those sharp edges (or pipe insulating tubes, works too) to prevent injuries. We want you to get to flying intact as much as possible…
Man, when it comes to work, Joe is a beast! I have been watching this channel for a long long time and I see he does so much work, yet he is down to earth and never complains looks like. Especially in these days where everyone complains so much for even the slightest amount of work they do. Shoutout to him for loving what he does. We all can learn so much from him and be humble.
He is a legend, don't know where we'd be without him!
Same thing I was thinking you took the words right out of my mouth. Joe is a big asset to rebuild rescue. And also seems so humble.

Joe is awesome!
It was a logical step to start a repair company especially with the number of planes owned, should also help with accountability when it comes to partnerships and charity work. Great to see good things happening to a good team.
Painting tip for you, when doing the vertical passes, don' turn a gravity fed gun on it's side! Just rotate the outer spray nozzle 90 degrees, keep the gun upright and just rotate the spray pattern with the nozzle!
what I was thinking ! like geeeeee
He has the 3M PPS system, so it doesn't really matter how you turn it.
Them painting causes me to stroke, the Tiger stripes are awful. It’s gonna show if not properly sanded and primed

Hello, mate. Retired 27 year Royal Air Force ‘Jet Mech’ here, or in my parlance ‘Aircraft Propulsion Technician’. Hope you are well, fellow vet.
Joe is such amazing hard working guy. He is such a great asset to the team... The guy is such a Beast....... Great work Joe.......!
RIP Sam
I am still overwhelmed at how much work has gone into this. Its like you rebuilt an entire plane. There is a great sense of inspiration and satisfaction watching your shows guys LEGEND!!!
That means a lot to us Blake !
You should add a person or two to follow the paperwork on maintenance/ ADs/ for the repair/overhaul for each plane. This allows the trained/certified team to spend more time on actual work. If you track the time it is very cost effective. Thx for bringing us along. 😊😊😊 John Ken
sure yes, get ahead of the 401 parts, the elevator and rudder bearings should have been there long before installation, the front gear parts also
In a previous career I was the technical author. Supposedly writing manuals, test scripts and procedures. But the engineers were so incapable of stringing words together that I got the job of almost any project document except the really techie stuff like programming specs. It made sense. I understood what they did but did not have the coding brain to make the computers do what we wanted. They struggled to write readable text with appropriate information so we all won.
@@davidelliott5843, try writing that again but this time, lay off the drugs.
@@johnnunn8688 He did capitalize the first letter of every sentence, so his story checks out.
Usually with desiccant pink is wet blue is dry. You can bake pink desiccant at low temps to dry it back out if you can’t get new for some reason.
HI ALL
Its all coming together thx guys
I have been in or around aircraft maintenance all my adult life. Now at 70 with 17000 hours as pilot and many years as maintenance Supervisor I understand the task you guys have and I applaud you for your attitudes and work ethics. Keep it up and Well Done.
I go crazy when i see how much effort you put in.
Joe is the Master....what you would do without this good soul? My best regards from Berlin.
Hey Jason. The desicant plugs are blue when new and turn orange when full of moisture.
Love the fact that you're saving this plane. I've logged some time in a 401. Great flying plane and the fact that it's cabin class... Even better.
Dear Jason,
Good to learn that there are a lot more projects going on than the Cessna 401. At the other hand I would have loved to follow the development of the 401. I wish you and your team lots of success with all the ongoing projects and send you love from the Netherlands
Ages ago, when I was in the Navy, we would have a Planned Maintenence Schedule (PMS) for tasks that needed repetitive work. ie: Monthly greasing of fittings with the type of grease, the applicator and a list of fittings to be greased.
If you had a PM Schedule for your hangar/shop it could include monthly or bimonthly cleaning of the Vapor Hone, bimonthly replacement of your paint stand filters, if you still have it, the Dry Ice Cleaner Maintenance etc...
Having an assembly manual in a binder, allows the removal of a section to be kept by that piece being rebuilt. Check off each step as completed so if the person who started it has to go away, a new person isn't starting over and re-doing work previously done
I absolutely love that idea…. So much so that it’s going to become part of our SOP’s in the hangar.
@@rebuildrescue i suggest to not call it PMS though... lol
Hey Guys, CONGRATS on the new partnership. Should now be able to make some great progress on a few of the other projects!!! 401 is lookin' good man!!!
Good seeing you this morning Bruce! Your support is overwhelming, thank you for all your motivation
I was so glad that Jason took some time to explain things and answer some questions on this video .
Cleaning up the cleaner (Vapor Honing Technologies) was awesome. Kudos Joe for the ton of work!
Joe is an awesome team member.
Awesome ! , let's get to final painting of the 401 ! 😊
I wake up every weekend looking forward to updates from you guys. Thanks a bunch for being an inspiration
We appreciate your support Raine!
Desiccant turns orange/pink when it is fully saturated. It is blue when it is dried and ready to absorb moisture.
love the changes cant wait to see whats to come with this new partnership also the 401 is looking so nice you and your team have done an absolutely amazing job from what it looked like on day one to what it looks like you guys have done an out standing job cant wait to see it done
Thank you Liam! We are glad to have you here apart of the Rescue Crew spreading positivity !
Hi,I at one time flew a 401.
Just a tip on the gas heater, always start it on the ground.
Sometimes it will start in flight but it doesn't like it.
Great job oa the things you are doing.
That’s good to know and makes sense. I’d also like to make sure the heat was working before taking off. It gets cold up there sometimes.
Just waiting to get this plane finished man it's been 2 years and still milking out of the plane kinda now lot interest in it
Yeah, hard to tell if he's milking it because he is doing all these other side projects too. AH well, thats Capitalism 101!
270k and still want more ....best scam on youtube ... theres some suckers out there for sure
What impresses me the most is the detail you guys are putting into everything!
Thank you Edward! It's a lot of
work but it is so worth it!
@@rebuildrescue I don't see how the average Joe could ever get into flying - much less own a plane...
@@randallsmerna384 plenty of ‘average Joe’s’ have and do. People with little money go and clean aircraft for a half hour instructional flight; that kind of thing.
My son is a crew chief on F-35 and he tells me the amount of paperwork is just sick!!
I am from cardiff, Wales, UK, I have been watching every single episode rebuild rescue has ever produced. I look forward to every Saturday for my routine catch up on the 401 rebuild, please guys, keep up the good work I am a fan of every one of you. I wish I could come out and see the finished 401 maybe one day that will happen!
Your dedication is inspiring! Thank you for sticking by us through it all, I can't wait to cross the finish line with you all!
@@rebuildrescue I just got into this because of the 401 a few months back. My wife loves to watch/listen as I do, too. I love seeing old discarded things re-built. Ever since my buest bud took a CB400 Honda that was headed for the dump and made a bobber, I have been interested (I myself got a basket case CB750 Chopper and spent 8 years and JUST got it on the road...)
Keep producing, I'll keep watching..
I believe you will find that Ram ran it on a test stand, they have to to check that it's operating within tolerances.
I can't wait for the wings to be installed again.
It’s awesome you got some extra help for the 401 now!
We are so fortunate to have all this support from these amazing people!
I can't believe you're at the point of installing the wings and checking the engines out for re-install. So much work! Just goes to show, one can do anything when you put in the effort.

We aren't giving up! Thanks for all your support Mahmood
@rebuildrescue: Hey Jason, regarding the desiccant plugs: Actually, you've got that backward, when they are new and dry, the desiccant is supposed to be blue. The ones shown have been working for a while and have lost some of their ability to absorb moisture. You can (and I'd recommend), take the plugs apart, pour the desiccant into a shallow pan and gently bake out the moisture that's in it. This will restore the plugs to full capacity. Or you could replace them.
Not so. All the desiccant I've used is orange when dry and blue when saturated. A quick Google showed about a 50 : 50 split between products that are orange when dry, to blue when dry. That's the thing about "standards" if you don't like one, then you can always find a different one! 😮
Good info…. I’m going to have to check these ones and see which color they are when wet and dry. I’m just glad the engine cylinders looked good.
@rebuildrescue & @owensparks5013 Owen. it's possible, or maybe those plugs were filled with broken pieces of Jolly Rancher candies.😛 All of the ones I've seen for cylinder plugs have been blue, dry from the manufacturer. It's important to use working desiccant plugs as moisture comes in via open intake and exhaust valves. The exhaust and the intake system should also be sealed off, along with any other place that would allow entry of moisture (case breather, removed accessories, etc.). You can take those plugs apart and bake the desiccant dry by spreading it in a thin layer on a baking sheet. Preheat an oven to 175 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 15 minutes. When dried, functionality returns fully, the original color also returns but can be somewhat faded.🙃
Balancing flight surfaces can be fun. FYI the balance can be significantly influenced by the paint. Typically the center of gravity is closer to the leading edge of a flight surface. When you add paint, there will be more paint aft of the balance point. As you add primer &/or top coat, the flight surface will become more tail heavy. If balancing in primer, leave the flight surface towards the leading edge heavy side of the tolerance. As you add top coat, the flight surface cg will then move towards the middle of the tolerance. Too much top coat can make it trailing edge heavy.
What nonsense you spout.
@@johnnunn8688 Thanks for your input John. The functional stupidity of your willful ignorance is truly appreciated. I will immediately remove the 40+ yrs of military & commercial aerospace experience from my resume, and apply for a burger flipping job 1st thing tomorrow morning.
@@johnnunn8688he's spouting straight facts, why do you think weight and balance has to be done after a new paint job?
@@Danielism, yes, it’s done after a paint job but the way he ⬆️ says it, is bolx.
Remember Jason, overhauled doesnt always mean new! If the pistons measured out okay, they may have cleaned, inspected and reinstalled the old ones. I scoped one of the overhauled engines we have sitting in the hangar here (OH done by Aerotec Engines in Nova Scotia) and it was slightly cleaner, but not much better than yours.
We really need to analyze the logs and Hobbs time on the 402 donor. Either way they’re going to go out to an overhaul shop to be gone over but we want to be 100% sure they’re good to go.
Jayden, while I agree OH doesn't mean new, all parts would have/should have been cleaned and inspected. Removing any carbon deposits from the pistons should have been done to accomplish a detailed inspection.
@Jim Dinwiddie I agree with you there, I'm theorizing that the pistons were cleaned, but you never end up with the smooth machine finish of a brand new piston, and that roughness of the cleaned but old piston increases its surface area and creates a better bonding surface for carbon. The average test cell break-in is around 2 hours (atleast at the overhaul shop I deal with in Canada) and if was it operated full rich, for 2 hours. There's potential to see carbon build up like that in that time frame. Just my theory (I've been wrong before lol)
@@rebuildrescue with the amount of time and energy you guys are putting into the 401, I completely agree. Better safe than sorry, and you got such a good deal on the 402 package that you'll still come out on top, even with a little added expense at the OH shop.
More PROGRESS... Thanks Jason and Company ';-)
I love to see where this is going. You know I look forward to some more yacht videos! Have a good one!
I get a whole new level of excitement with every episode guys. Impeccable attention to detail, I can’t wait to see this brand new bird sitting on its landing gear.

Good luck guys! 🙂
Jason, lots of people (including me) are wondering where skinny Joe has gone.
Please answer.
Somewhere in the comments here he mentioned Joe was super busy.
Great to see you all coming together and getting more time on other projects too. Great spray job by Smiley Joe; harsh scores on the landings, he he.
The top of the Cylinders made me feel uneasy ... kind of a gutshot ... but I want to be wrong and am looking forward to the outcome of the deeper dive.
Should get a cheap blue tarp and cover the boat protect the fabric etc. we’re getting into summer sun heat damage.
How long has it sat unprotected already though?
Coming together like a precision watch 😊
I used to start new projects all the time. Lots of stuff lying around making for a messy life. Then I started to focus on the main things more than anything else and life started getting better. Nothing like the lift you get from a finished project to push you into the next one with more enthusiasm. I know your money goals are running short is one problem and then you have yourselves spread so thin between many projects in different areas makes it even more complex. My hope is that you change your direction by focusing on the main problems. Too many projects is one and not enough money for the 401 is the other. Start doing things to raise more capital. You can have more than one crowd source going. You can raise money by inviting tours. Your already raising money by advertising and I'm sure there are a lot of other sources that I haven't even thought of (maybe make one video about the money and what your doing to raise it and ask for suggestions from anyone that has one). Just hate to see you get lost in the many project arena without getting anything totally completed. Good luck guys. Wish you the best.
I look forward to Saturday morning videos!
We hope you enjoy this weeks episode! Thank you for being here with us!
Yes man your voice is really much more pleasant and better than many sports commentators and news anchors ...and you deliver such great work...tis just pleasant to watch and follow
Greetings from Belgium
Thankyou for yet another excellent video update. Well shot, well edited. Good to see the quality upgrades. My hero is Joe.
I watch every episode. The 401 is in good hands. Question : Is it possible you could share a link to the music that is played in your episodes. That would be kind. I am not a pilot. I just luv flying. done lots of passenger jets. In my early days. I've been a passenger of a Microlight, fantastic stuff. Now I'm a Pensioner, age 68. From Swindon. UK. I'm a armchair flyer lol 🤠
I appreciate (as much as I can) the time and effort that goes into a project like this, and that there are delays and slowdowns and so on, but for those of us who have followed the 401 from the very start, it sometimes seems like things could move faster if the whole team was on it. It doesn't help that every screw and washer and cotter pin and rivet is being replaced (maybe a tad overkill?). I guess we came into this as the 401 project, and we kinda expected that it would be balls to the wall and all-401. But Jason's out buying more planes (and boats and cars and RVs) and it often seems like there's only one or two guys doing all the lifting on this plane. Now I see more guys have (finally) been recruited, and I think I speak for many when I say we hope this thing gets really moving. We want to see it painted and reassembled and flying. We want to see the 401 SAVED! Am I wrong?
I totally see where you’re coming from…. This project has been one where we’re all learning and growing. Pulling the 401 apart was one thing but assembling it a whole other. It’s an immense responsibility. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes that has to happen with a rebuild like this one on an airplane. this project definitely isn’t a race to get done. It’s a journey. The number one goal is for it all to be done the right way. Sometimes we may work on another project while we wait for other things to be able to get done on the 401. We always figured it was better to have some other things going on so we could have content every week. Otherwise, the content would just be sporadic the other hill we have to constantly climb is to keep everybody employed who’s involved on the channel and this build. Putting all this together hasn’t been easy but it’ll be worth it. Thank you so much for being here…. for coming and spending your time with us.
THE YACHT!!!!!

I like the paperwork. Somehow, it feels more real that if this was just screens on a tablet. Oh, and I still like the primer green and grey. Such nice colours! The green hints at British Racing Green, so that will always get my vote!
