Pensioner who runs his car on chip fat oil

  • A pensioner from Sussex has got so fed up with the price of petrol that he has decided to run his vehicle on chip fat.
    Derek Brown 69, from Hastings in East Sussex, decided to try the sunflower oil after a like-minded friend ran his car on the fluid without any problems. The sunflower oil and fat are not mineral-based fuels, so the emissions are less harmful, although there is a slight smell of chip fat as he passes you by.

    There is a farmer in Canada who grows canola and uses the oil to fuel all if this diesel farm equipment. The oil companies tried to use Canada's legal machinery to stop him.
    As long as its clean and filtered it has the same BTU's as diesel fuel. So it works perfect.
    Mustard oil has an oxygen molecule so you can even get I bit more power that way.

      Diesel engines were originally intended to run on vegetable oil. The petroleum companies started selling cheaper #2 oil as diesel fuel and people switched to using it. It would be ridiculous for them to try to stop someone from using the original fuel. I doubt that what you said really happened.

      PJ Scotland - it has never been illegal. You used to have to keep receipts - but HMRC changed the rules over 10 years ago. It's something like 25k miles + per year before you have to start retaining receipts and paying fuel duty. I've done it on and off for years and did plenty of research beforehand. Funnily enough, nor have I ever been stopped. If I had, then the online MoT records held by DVLA would prove I only cover 7k a year and therefore using veg within the law.

    • @pauls3839
      @pauls3839 Před 6 lety +4

      Fart Farmer - diesels £1.23 a litrre where I live. I pay the equivalent of 90p a litre for unused veg. Used veg is impossible to come by nowadays as it gets bought up by companies making bio fuel. Besides, refining it is a ballache and not worth it unless you're covering big miles.

    • @silureswarrior6045
      @silureswarrior6045 Před 6 lety +5

      PJ Scotland not even close to illegal, you can use 2500L a year duty free, all you have to do is keep a record of what you use with receipts, obviously due to this it's very easy to stay under that 2500L limit if your so inclined.

    The thing is, these SVO or WVO conversions do work, but only really in hot climates. Otherwise there is a BUNCH of things that need to be done to the fuel pump, filters, filter heaters, and even fuel heaters to make it a daily driver in anywhere other than hot climates. Even in hot climates, it would be a good idea to do them regardless. The thinner that oil is, the better it will run and the less clogs. The price to do the conversion often outweighs the savings in general, unless you are doing WVO.

    Yes, it WILL RUN. It is an expensive way of replacing Diesel. Use USED cooking oil, break it down from long chain polymers to "short" chain polymers using "trans-esterification" to make BIODIESEL. If you get the used oil for free, and you buy the 2 catalysts you can make it cheaper than Diesel bought at the fuel station. Look up "making Biodiesel" on the Internet.

    • @pauls3839
      @pauls3839 Před 6 lety +4

      scott carr - depends where you live. Diesel has risen to £1.24 a litre here in the UK. Veg oil is the equivalent of 75p litre at Costco. You can't get hold of used veg here anyway as companies are buying it wholesale from restaurants, takeaways. I know as I have enquired in the past. Used veg is a lot of hassle for the mileage I do. I've done 70k+ miles over the years on new veg and only ever had a couple of blocked filters. It's safe and clean and easy to just pour in. Going back to an old oil burner this spring as fuel prices are getting stupid.

      Cooking oil actually removes carbon deposits in combustion areas. It is actually a very clean fuel and far better than mineral oil based fuel. I know quite a few Mercedes diesel owners (190D w201 and e class w124) and have seen the inside of the cylinders of engines under test. It is interesting to note that cooking oil went up in price when the supermarkets found it was being used as fuel! However a preheater must be fitted prior to filtration as it does wax in cold weather. The mothercare baby food heater (12volt) fitted over the filter and was a normal conversion!

    Vegetable oil can be used as diesel fuel just as it is, without being converted to biodiesel. The downside is that straight vegetable oil(SVO) is much more viscous (thicker) than conventional diesel fuel or biodiesel, and it doesn't burn the same in the engine -- many studies have found that it can damage engines

Anything below 4c and veg oil thickens up slightly ( doesn't solidify ) and morning starts get difficult. My next project will involve 100% veg all year, with heated fuel lines for next winter. Heated elements from motorbike grips work a treat.

    • @peternt2008
      @peternt2008 Před 6 lety

      That depends. FIrst of all i was just looking at the milage rates for diesel and for vegetable oil. And vegetable oil is 7.14 % less mileage than diesel. And also if you consider most cars have between a 45 and 60 litre tank, do you find it more convenient to go to the petrol station or going to the market and buying 30 x 2 litre bottles of home brand oil, and then putting them into your can and then disposing of the plastic bottles after ?
      And checking against my local diesel price versus home brand vegetable oil . $1.39 a litre for diesel and the cheapest homebrand oil is $4.40 for a 2 litre bottle or $2.20 a litre.
      So my guess is diesel is a more convenient option and cheaper , especially when you take in the 7.14 % difference in mileage in diesels favor.
