      @@csolivais1979 it's just funny watching so many people have such a damn strong opinion about something so completely subjective... Enough that the goal was called a goal on the ice with everyone watching... Toronto waiting to complain and say no goal.... And just go watch some damn videos of the shootout and it's just a joke how people sound. I mean I posted one video that has the 10 "best shootout goals" and almost half of them are far less clear as goals than this one... Not to mention again for the second time...he made it harder on HIMSELF than the goalie. The guy is a elite scoring machine and he took 45 minutes to deke back and forth. The whole shootout is and always has been a joke that has nothing to do with hockey. This wasn't a goal by some impossible scorer. This wasn't Marek Malik. He could have scored with his eyes closed more than half the time. It's practically random.. But look at all the people just having a fit over this play. It's funny as hell. Especially when it's a Toronto fan who complains first. There isn't a fan of this sport who doesn't know if Marner does this it's an astonishingly amazing display of skill and anyone who says a word just is a hater...... It's done. It's one goal.... It's one shooter of 6. It's actually in general a coin flip and anyone who knows this sport and doesn't think so is kidding themselves. But if it's that much on people's mind then just watch the video. The second goal is a Leaf doing a full 360 not moving directly towards the net whatsoever. That's an all time great goal.... This one is maybe his stick wasn't moving forward? If a guy spins can his stick be moving forward?
      And again game is done man. Move on. There's worse every game on bs penalty calls. Or non suspensions of dirty plays. Etc.

      Right on all counts, IMO. McElhinney got a hip to the sternum, no way he doesn't go down on that--but I think he wanted to make sure the ref saw it.
      And yeah I agree about Panarin (even as a Ranger fan) but I do think it was really close. Remember the rule is the puck must continue in motion "toward the opponent's goal line" and that doesn't mean the net--the goal line extends across the entire zone. That means you're okay sweeping across the net as long as the puck keeps closing the distance to the end boards, basically. Panarin didn't do that--it shouldn't have counted--but understanding the rule exactly as it's written, you can see how close that was.

      Nah I dont think it's that unusual, as a goalie I probably would have done something similar because he is cutting across the crease. You give him a shot with your arm/try to hit him. I have stepped into someone cutting across the crease with my shoulder. Even though he initiated contact it wasn't to dive it was just to be aggressive and as the player hits him it just pulls him along. Not a dive and not a penalty just something that fires everyone up

      @@hindey19 Agreed. I don't know why some massive goalie like Ben Bishop, when they see some kamikaze jackass screaming towards his crease like that, doesn't just stand up, take one step forward and absolutely CRUSH the forward into next week... maybe a blocker and/or shaft of goalie stick accidentally takes out 5 or 10 chiclets.
      Now take note: Bishop would not and COULD not be suspended due to the precedent of Pronger rule (long accepted by the Dept. of Player Incapacitation) of "Hey!, on I'm a big guy on skates... it's not my fault that I crushed his head because his head is at the height of my elbow!!"

    For a little context on the lack of a fine it was on Chara: If a full time minimum wage employee ($7.25/$15k nationally) got fined $5k, it would be 1/3rd of their yearly salary. For a NHL league minimum player ($700k) that ratio would be 1/140th of their salary. For Chara ($3.75m per Steve) that is 1/750th of this year's salary. If that same minimum wage employee got fined the same 1/750th of their salary, it would amount to a $20 fine.

When I do it I'm trying to avoid contact with a knee (mine or theirs) and protect my head. After that you just go with them in whatever direction they take you and act like a crumple zone... As for the Panarin shootout goal, it counts as I believe that the rule states that it's the *puck* and not the player that has to remain travelling in a forward motion towards the goal, and while Panarin does travel slightly backwards the puck does not thus good goal.

    • @aralornwolf3140
      @aralornwolf3140 Před 4 lety

      Yep... and the puck moves to the right as well... However, if the league calls that to be "No Goal"... many other SO goals would be disallowed because the way some players skate across the ice in front of the goalie... the puck isn't moving forward at all at that point...

    So my take on Panarin was the goal shouldn't count (and I'm a Ranger fan!) but then someone pointed out that the rule says the puck must remain in motion TOWARD THE OPPONENT'S GOAL LINE, which is not synonymous with the net--the goal line extends across the entire zone, boards to boards. Apparently that wording was specifically to allow players to sweep across the top of the crease like this, and if you watch this puck I do think it continues in motion toward the goal line. So actually.... they got it right?

    1) It's not a dive it's falling with style
    2) If the shooter is skating backwards while they face the goal they cant have forward momentum... or they're gumby.
    3) no third question but just pointing out Steve is going to need to start stretching if he's going to keep kicking in these or they're going to need a wider angle lens.

    Idk what the conclusion on that shoot out goal is and Idk if you're allowed to flip backwards, but I know the rule is that the shooter needs to keep moving forward. Mcelhinney should have been in aquatic sports, great dive - from a biased Avs fan. However, raising the left arm/shoulder to initiate contact was done on the part of the goalie, while Compher was aiming away from the goal (based on his skate angle). Also, great check by McKinnon.
