  • Marshall Rosenberg, the author of “Nonviolent Communication - A Language for Life”, explains how to listen empathically.
In this video: Reassuring, diagnosing, “murderer!”
This is a bite-sized piece of the more lengthy material that is available in the original source: • Video I am trying to contribute to and transform the original material by creating shorter, well-structured videos with clear titles, with the intention to make Marshall's work more accessible and clear to an online audience.

Empathic listening is a skill. I’m glad we can all learn it and practice it.

"When people trust that you value what is alive in them, what they are feeling and needing in the moment. ....this makes compassionate connecting much easier."

so, what's an empathic reaction to the initial statement?

Recapping that at the beginning of this clip, Marshall describes a time when he conducted an exercise with a group of psychiatrists, asking them to write an empathic response to a patient who says: "I'm feeling so depressed. I'm not sure I want to keep alive. I think the world would be better off without me." After collecting the responses and reading them to the group, only three responses were judged to empathic. Marshall describes some of the non-empathic responses but he does say what any of the desired empathic responses were.
Nadia, I'm not trained as a psycholgist or psychiatrist. I am trying to learn and practice Marshall Rosenberg's teaching about nonviolent communication. As part of that practice, I offer this as one idea for an empathic response to the depressed patient who seems to be contemplating suicide: "I hear you expressing deep sadness and a feeling of hopelessness in this moment. Is that correct?"

Sadly, even after 10 years since this event, the US still sends weapons to support the genocidal Israeli army, and there is little concern among American politicians for what is happening in Palestine.💔
