Usually my insomnia cripples my daily life, but there are moments where the stars align and I get to be awake at the time a new episode drops. Thanks Jon and Scott!
I definitely recommend The Expanse! Other than Andor, I'd say it's the most enjoyable sci-fi I've watched in the last 10 -15 years.
“It’s not about having a heart attack. It’s about feeling like you’re having a heart attack.”
- Ninjon
Scott. I actually really enjoy the board gaming side of things a lot. Your board game miniature comparison video was enjoyable. These things certainly pull me in more as a viewer as I relate more to them than the high level bust display painting videos.
From Davis Eddings, “Fantasy tells you the time, Sci-fi stops to tell you how the watch works.”
Love this episode! Trapped Under Plastic "The podcast where the Ninjon and Miniac clans come together to design evil plans for taking over the miniature world." Yes to Drunk Mini Painting, please!
1:03:06 aite, so not to 'um akshually' here, but a main sticking point of your argument and video seemed to be that the scheme you used and the box art doesn't line up with the painting guides your went for. Imotekh is a Sautekh character, not a Szarekhan one - that's why they don't look the same. Sautekh are the old posters boys, heavy on silver and greens with gold for the upper class, and Szarekhan are the current boxart boys, heavy on bronze, brass and dark silver. i have to agree with your points on the lack of transparency around boxart paintjobs, and i enjoyed the video and really like the end result for what it's worth, but you can't fault that for the inaccuracy.
is there an argument to be made that it should be more clear that he's a specific dynasty character? yes, absolutely. though i think if you're buying one for an army, you'll likely know if you're picking up the right character for that anyway.
The 1.20 conversion about GW teaching videos, is a middle management issue. Peachy talked about those exact examples in a few of his podcasts.
This was hands down one of the best episodes in awhile
I love the science fiction vs fantasy debate, as well as trying to more precisely define each genre. The way it has been explained to me (which comes from literature) is that Science Fiction is about an idea, whereas Fantasy is about characters. So you can have Fantasy in a setting that would normally be thought of as Science Fiction, and you can have Science Fiction in a setting that is normally considered fantasy.
The easiest way for me to understand this is to ask what is different about this world? Is that change central to the story and well explored? A really stark example is a book called "The Practice Effect." The whole conceit is that entropy works differently. Use something and it becomes better, don't use it and it gets worse. And then the whole book is about discovering and exploring that idea. Even the characters spend the book exploring that idea and it informs the story.
LoTR and Star Wars within this framework are fantasy, one is classical fantasy and the other is sometimes called Science Fantasy. They are about characters, settings, politics, etc. Yes, there is magic or the force, maybe there is high/advanced technology, but no one explores why the world is different or why the magic/force works and then spends the story exploring that. It's about the hero's journey and any explanations serve to further the story of the hero. Also, there very well may be stories in the Star Wars universe that are Science Fiction within this paradigm, but I don't know them and I'm really referencing the original trilogy.
An example of Science Fiction which could have instead been Fantasy is the series 1632. Characters are sent back in time to 1632 and then have to live in that world, but the books are about how people from different times would interact, what would happen because those events are changed. Yes, there are characters that are important to the story and move it along, but the core of the story is how these people from different times interact and how would new technologies change the development of the world.
I think dry brushing capes/cloaks, etc, is great! I got some High Elf Shadow Warriors, painted their cloaks Caliban Green (my favorite GW green base paint) and dry brushed it up with my favorite green layer paint, Warp Stone glow. I did quite a few layers and it turned out quite nice. I'm proud of them even though I painted them a couple of years back and improved a lot since then.
Hi! I don't know if either of you will see this but yes do watch expanse! I also recommend the book series it's based on. It's on audible if you prefer that. So good.
For those screen issues some cameras have phone apps you can use to start and stop them with a tablet and/or cell phone. The Canon I use to film my videos does.
Drunken mini painting for rhe win!!! Yes yes yes please literally nearly pissed watching you boys, so so funny!
Thoroughly enjoyed, Team
We NEED a full segment where Scott tries to describe euro game mechanisms to Jon. But poorly.
“There will be no dice required for this phase”
RCsparks taught me the same about filming my scale RC crawler, slo mo makes it look so much more realistic
Any chance we could get Jon to do a video of recreating the tesseract glow technical paint but in addition to the color matching one, do one for other cool flouro colors for osl and plasma effects and such? Barring that, could I get that recipe he said? tried to find it in the video again but apparently I keep missing it when I am skipping around. Thanks!
I've just bought the dark angel, head seems smaller because of the size of the gun if you have the gun lifted up close to the head
John, your impersonation of what Scott’s drunken video would be, sounds like Strongbad from Home Star Runner… there’s a blast from the past for you.
Love the Tactics Ogre series! I also got Star Ocean Second Story R. So we play the same games Jon!
I work at the post office and TEMU packages are hilarious. We have to tape close most of them when they arrive because crap is falling out.
I always forget that watching this while doing detail work is often a bad idea. Y'all were funnier than usual, and I had to redo some scroll work multiple times. :P
The expanse is so good but firefly is the best.
Oh, dudes. Absolutely watch Oppenheimer and The Barbie Movie.
They're both Fantastic. Oppenheimer is long though so ya know take a pee break or something.
It's not the first time I notice it in your videos but that death shirt is really f***ing nice Scott!!
That’s a good point for the GW painting videos. For example their Space Marine dick cloths are painted basically yellow in their tutorials but closer to beige and white in all art.
Casian Andor is THE sci fi series.... BTW, every guy in Greece is EXACTLY like those Spartans in 300 movie. True story 💪
Browncoats unite!
Tactics Ogre so good. I have fond memories of Ogre Battle 64. Such a great series.
StarOcean and Tactics Ogre are total bangers! Final fantasy Tactics on PlayStation was my gateway into table top games.
Artis Opus and Miniac collab! Right meow!
I Love Tactics Orge!! Great for those times when Total war is too fast paced.
On the spare bag packing comment, this is the way Taobao & co. does shops consolidation in China, every shop send your stuff in a small carton box well packed, they put all these in a huge bag, and send it oversea to your home. Most of the time it is fine, just don't order a big metal heavy thing, with your minis :D
Perfect is the enemy of good enough
50 min John says urine lol, as in "urine trubbs"... can relate😂
Imperial Assault is pretty fun but the models are absoluteley attrocious, lots of cleanup needed and some is too much work imo than what would be worth to fix it. Great models to use speedpaints on though and spend a bit more time on the faces and it's pretty decent.
how dose the monster vs the Amazon alcohol version stack up john?
Hi there! I love your TUP sign behind you. Who made that?
😂 I did a 24hr snooker session on vodka red bull and pints of lager , know that shakey feeling, I don't drink alcohol at all anymore 😂
The 'eavy metal team probably use whatever tools they can get, maybe it's just a thing of not wanting to say, "for this you use the Vallejo metal colors, they rock!" 😅
Close up pictures of models is a very important thing in batreps, at least in my subjective preference for what I like. Other people may like different things about batreps, so I'm not speaking for everyone.
My favorite batreps show the minis closeup while also having wider establishing shots so I know which section of the table I'm looking at. Just closeups is as bad as just wide angle. I also like hearing the dice roll target numbers, seeing the roles and hearing the mechanics. I know some people are happy with a slickly edited narrative recap with all that cut out, and I can understand the concept, but I really missing the feeling of it being a mini game without closeups of the action and the mechanics.
Yall gotta include godzilla minus one on your movie list so freaking good
Shout out mailing stuff in pillow cases.
Firefly is amazing. But it’s a cult classic. The shows release schedule and the order it came out was crazy bad and got canceled.
I think people fell in love with the potential of the show and how well written it is. The character dynamics are great and witty humor. It’s not overtly serious. It’s the same formula that made Marvel movies popular.
It takes the western in space to the extreme to the point where it feels a little silly but that’s kind of the charm
❤ Terpandurplarstiks! ❤
"Imagine trying to do anything with tools." - Mini yak, 2023
Have you guys seen the new logitech reach webcam? It's not out yet but looks like it would be ideal forour use
Star wars and star trek are leagues apart, love star wars, battle star Galactica, buck Rogers I've never been much of a Trekkie but semi enjoyed the later films
You may as well get a cheap vaping machine,I was vaping when I was trying to give up smoking, I found the same thing happened as your smoke machine, I had to constantly had to clean windows and wash interior of my car as vaping was leaving a film over the whole car
On Star Wars and scifi...
I think in general the themes in scifi have way more commentary on the real world in some way. Like if Star Wars was to be "more scifi" I think there would be way more focus on the Empire and have messages and themes about fascism and using technology to control huge areas of space. Maybe also framing the jedi and the force as more of a religion, and tell a story about the value of religion and how being guided by positive spirituality defeats evil spirituality.
Star Wars is more just a fantasy heros journey in space. Its more about the characters and telling a fun story with cool FX than it is about the usual scifi fare of big philosophical statements. And I say that as a huge star wars fan AND a huge scifi fan.
I'm sure you can break it down in some technical way much further than that, but that's just my 2 cents on it.
"In Terms of being a creator, there is no point in doing anything that is not incredible."
Playing Devil's Advocate here
I can slice that quote two other ways.
1. He believes that everything he does is always incredible.
2. Anything short of incredible is a failure.
Did he say it early in his career when he was not known for any success and that was motivation for him?
Or did he do it after he was already successful?
Context and timelines matter in regards to quotes like this.
On the one hand it can be taken at face value if it was early in his career.
On the other hand, if this is post success, it can come off as egotistic and self-absorbed.
I always preferred quotes like this which are more attainable and realistic: Success is built upon the failures that preludes it.
19:40 This is exactly my issue with how GW teaches painting. Multiple thin coats to get a perfect basecoat, then a wash, then another basecoat. Why did you need a perfect basecoat if you're just doing a hard-edge basecoat after the wash? What a waste of time.
You got me. Three months late but never mind.
Kickstarter smoke machine that leaves oil all over the table and models. Creates a bunch of smoke and breathes it all in lol. Who needs lungs haha!
when I leave my house trapped under plastic keeps my dogs company
Jon, when stream?
Couple things for this episode,
1st- Jon, you leave my boy Quasimodo alone you damn dirty sugar free alcoholic monster suckin nerd.
2nd- You fellas should take a look at fishing lure/bait maker channels for your mini rotisserie drying setup. Lots of those people use a similar setup for final drying coats and it seems fairly easy to set up.
Appreciate you guys as always making another fun episode of TUP.
If you are going to compare Sci-Fi and Fantasy, then you have to go back to the roots of both which means first books and then later on comic books.
Motion pictures had a very limited reach when they were first invented and shown, especially compared to books and then comic books.
As to games.
Once can easily argue that 40K is a fantasy game and outside of perhaps games like Battletech, there are very few actual Sci-Fi tabletop miniature games.
There is definitely lines that are crossed between Sci-Fi and Fantasy where it can come down to one's own POV.
Feel free to send your free LI box to me Jon. Epic has been kept alive by a HUGE community for MANY years and the 3d printing support is all over the web, GW just finally figured out they could make money on it.
As far as the game design stuff goes, go ahead with it when you can. I mean Black Magic Craft is a total terrain building channel, along with some mini painting and his folding in for his game went over well. Sure, I get it that the party line is you have to niche down to get the views and whatever else YT wants you to do, but, there are a lot of aspects to this hobby.
What no Stargate? And the Expanse is awesome and guys you have to watch Altered Carbon that series will blow your minds.
four loko marine paint schemes imo
Byron is a master of the drybrush arts and is out to bring us all to the dark side.
No shit. He literally took drybrushing to level no one thought about. Drybrushing used to be the entry level noob go to and he's doing it making models look like they were layered like a Japanese katana.
Hey Scott, I loved your video on making a game - I work professionally as a level designer and if you're interested I'd love to talk about game design sometime
BH?! Everybody has a price lol!
Butter
Oh shit. Someone get John so.e four loko or Sparks !!! Back in the day wh3n that shit was real.
I own everything for imperial assault but can't find anyone to play it with me. Because no one wants to talk to me about star wars as well 8)
Scott do a second channel for games and that
It is a fools errand to try and place stories into genres like you are putting them into neat boxes. In general a genre is an angle to you attack a subject under a form of critique. For example I have written a paper about the book Dune, while you could analyze the paper under the lens of Sci-fi or Fantasy I wrote about it through the lens of Eco criticism; in particular on how the Desert in the story helped shape its settings, the characters and the language. You could do similar things for that book under political critique, religious critique or any other number of umbrellas. In general the story touches all of the said genres as you can focus on those aspects. Sci-fi and Fantasy are also extremely closely related, both falling under the larger genre of Speculative Fiction. Very little in story telling is just one genre, normally the fit a range of genres and subgenres.
The expanse was really good for the first three seasons, after that it kind of lost its touch.
Maybe do that diarmia for golden demon have the 300 be the minatour chapter vs the slaaensh dem ok n
Why are they called "web cams" anyway?
Y’all need to check out bread circus before saying Star Wars is fantasy
please just dont overdo the smoke thing. I love squidmar but god damn, sometimes I wish to see the model not just the smoke
Trapped under plastic, the podcast brought to you by lesbian stinky pants, who paint minis 🎉
Mixing Vodka and Energie is a very common drink hier in Germany ^^ I would say its very popular with younger folks, so don't worry we are as childish as you guys :D
"There's no point in doing anything that isn't incredible."
No, sir, I don't like it.
Unless you want to start playing fast an loose with "incredible"
@jon The battle shown on the movie DID happen actually. Obviously Spartans were nothing like the actors muscle wise but it was much like the movie in fact that 300 died to stall an army of like 10.000 Persians. That's history not mythology ;-)
Here first
Love you guys but gotta say that hearing Jon being arrogant when it comes to GW games is getting old. Like he doesn't really know what he's talking about in the news section but just keeps going. It gets embarrasing if you clearly don't know what you're talking about. You've got your own great style and that's why I tune in every podcast but this same thing just keeps happening again and again. There's being critical and there's being a bit of a jackass. The beginning of the news portion veered towards jackassery. I hope Scott doesn't feel like shit since he's not in GWs good graces despite being one of the OGs on CZcams, all the while Jon is getting more and more arrogant. It's important to be critical of GW to hold them accountable but it doesn't help your message when you don't do your homework.
Euro = minus fun 💯%
With all the things known about Temu by now (slave labour, financing the genocide of the Uyghurs in china, collecting personal data for the Chinese government etc), how can you still sit there laughing about giving them money? Dude, seriously: That is massively disgusting.
Because the information is out about something, it doesn't mean that it's all verified OR that it's widely known. I talked to several people about Temu this past weekend and they didn't know that there were any issues beyond them being a lower quality website. I actually just watched a video by Squidmar where he was rating the quality of certain products from them, but seemed to be completely unaware of any other issue with them.
@@godconvoyand that's why I said the same to the squidmar guys. Information about the owner and the business tactics of Temu have been confirmed by now, btw.
