When I read about these approaches they all seemed similar to me. I want to research negative attitudes shown through language usage towards Eliza Doolittle in G. B. Shaw's "Pygmalion". Would Discourse Analysis be the proper one to use in order to approach this topic?
    Looking forward to your reply.

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  Před 3 lety +2

      Hello! If you're interested in researching the attitudes that characters in "Pygmalion" have towards Eliza Doolittle, I might suggest using narrative analysis or textual analysis, since you would be focusing on perceptions (as expressed through language) within the story itself. If, however, you wanted to examine people (that is, real people's) perceptions of Eliza Doolittle, then discourse analysis could be useful. I hope that helps!

      Hi Anna. Ideally, you would reach a point of data saturation (when additional data yields nothing new), but that can often only be determined by the researcher and will vary according to the research project. If you're working on a thesis, it should be pretty substantial. What are you working on?

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  Před rokem

      Thanks much! I think Discourse Analysis would be the most appropriate (especially if you intend to analyze not just the posts themselves, but how the politician responds to/engages with others who respond to their posts and how the politician tries to "make meaning" and engage with their constituents more generally). However, if you want to analyze the politician's language at a more "nuts and bolts" level (e.g., what patterns they use in their posts, such as certain words, punctuation, or emojis), you could possibly use conversation analysis. I hope that helps!

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  Před rokem +2

      Technically, they are different subdisciplines of linguistics. Pragmatics involves the study of meaning in context (e.g., how speakers understand sarcasm), while discourse analysis involves investigating how speakers work together to make meaning in conversation. I would further argue that students should learn pragmatics before they take on discourse analysis, as an understanding of the later requires an understanding of the former. Another thing to consider is that discourse analysis is something you can "do" or "perform" by analyzing extended stretches of written, signed, or spoken language, but you can't really "do" pragmatics. I hope that helps!

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello! Critical discourse analysis is not so different from discourse analysis in terms of methods (e.g., examining the use of language in speech or texts, thematic analysis), but the goals are different--the former seeks to understand how language reinforces asymmetrical power relationships) while the latter focuses on how speakers use language to co-construct meaning).

    Is meaning synonymous with notions of identity? If yes, are they equivalent?

    • @evanashworth490
      @evanashworth490  Před 2 lety

      I suppose it depends who you talk to. A semantician is concerned with "meaning" insofar as denotational meaning is concerned (e.g., is a "beanbag" a chair?), but a discourse analyst might say that when friends engage in conversation, their use of slang terms reinforces group membership, so in that sense "meaning" and "identity" certainly overlap. I would not say that "meaning" and "identity" are equivalent, though. I think of it this way: "Meanings" (from what a word means to what our place in a social group means) add onto and interact with other meanings to form identity.

      Hi Abbas. I'm not entirely clear on what you mean by "sentence linguistics", but I assume you are getting at the idea that most of linguistics has been concerned with what is going on at the level of the sentence or lower (phrases, words, morpheme, sounds). If so, this is not the domain of discourse analysis, which is concerned with the study of extended stretches of naturally occurring language.

      Hello! Even though it's been a while since I read some Hofstede, consider the following. Hofstede developed the "Cultural Dimensions Theory", which involves a series of aspects in which cultural differences could be explored. For example, one of these aspects is "masculinity vs. femininity", so one could use discourse analysis of conversation in a speech community to understand how notions of gender are valued in the cultures of those speech communities. Hello! Very generally, pragmatics involves the study of meaning in context (e.g., how do we know when someone is being sarcastic?), so it is a subdiscipline of linguistics. However, I think of discourse analysis as more of a methodology for analyzing extended stretches of language. I hope that helps!

      Hello! There are a lot of useful CZcams videos on the topic of discourse analysis, so please take a look at those if you haven't already. In addition, you might read works by Deborah Schiffrin, Deborah Tannen, and Michel Foucault.
