    This guy makes me feel good and that I’m doing the right thing. I’ve been playing (self taught) for a long time and have not gotten too far. Now that I am retired, for the past few years I have a similar routine...up at 5am and practicing for about an hour or so. I have my list written out and cycle through all of it before my day starts. I do scales and modes with a metronome. Then I do triads, arpeggios, etc. I also play the song that I am learning over and over again for quite a few weeks and drive my husband nuts lol. Desi, your books and videos have definitely helped me improve!

    Joe appears to have amazing dexterity with his left hand. He does some stretches (with amazing accuracy) that he makes look easy. Great player. Great interview.

    Anyone who has read that book Joe mentions, “Peak” would know that everything the interviewer was saying about his “natural talent” probably made them squirm a bit. Enjoyed the interview regardless.

    • @desisernaguitar
      @desisernaguitar  Před 3 lety

      Oh, boy. Well, this opens up a big ol’ can of worms, lol. I am not a believer in the idea that natural talent should be discounted as the book Peak claims. That has not been the case for me as well as many of my students after decades of teaching. Everyone needs to practice, and everyone can make improvements, but some people simply have more potential than others. We call that a “gift” or “natural talent.” You know you’ve found an area you an can excel in when you put forth a great effort and see great results. You can admire a person both for their natural talent and work ethic.
      I should also add that a big part of what I do as an online instructor is encourage people who are down about their playing. They bought into the idea that they could be great. They were told that the only difference between them and Eddie Van Halen is that Eddie practiced more. When things don’t turn out like they plan, they become disappointed and discouraged, even wanting to quit. That’s when I need to explain to them that we all have limits/different amounts of potential. Rather than compare ourselves to others, we should explore our options, discover what we do well, and avoid our weaknesses. We don’t all have the potential to be great at everything we try. But most of us have the potential to find something we can be good at, whether we’re talking about guitar playing specifically or life in general. Being only “good” isn’t such a bad thing. Most of the guitarists who fill our airwaves are only “good” players with a very limited skillset compared to some players.
