Hello and welcome to my channel! My name is Joe, and I am a passionate musician here to share the joy of music with you all. As a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer, and teacher, I have a diverse range of skills and experiences to share.

This is a brilliant presentation if anyone is reading this, I can’t say enough great things about Joe’s community. The teaching materials alone are worth it. recording yourself is sooooo important...we record every practice on multi track...and you can hear every mistake...and everything that works....definitely dude
Sometimes you may think your hands are relaxed but you're holding tension in another part of your body. In my case, when I practise and my hands feel relaxed, I can sometimes feel my jaw is tense and clenched. I have been working on being self-aware and completely relaxed while playing.
I remember being very sad about my own playing at the age of just 16. I convinced myself I sucked because I compared myself to all my idols such as Tommy Emmanuel and you on youtube, or in other words: the best there is. Nowadays, I've learnt to realise that you don't need that level of playing to enjoy guitar or to entertain others. And it's fine! I'd even say the guitar became a true friend to me. That said, I'm still looking to improve and these type of videos from someone like you are cherished more than you can imagine. I am however, still waiting for a video on all your guitars, especially now I've spotted you using that new 60s telecaster! Keep it up, hero!

I don't like to hear myself singing, I suck. My guitar sounds good. But I agree with you to record my singing to hear how I can improve!
I've been playing for around 15 years. This video made me think for the first time ever of hanging it up. I recorded myself as suggested. Wow. What an eye opener. Much of it sounded like I imagined but it quickly also demonstrated some serious issues. I haven't quit but it has motivated me to really focus on the shortcomings. So in the end I guess it was a good wake up call.

This is great stuff. You’ve thought a lot about these things. One can tell that these things really impacted you and aren’t just a list you made up right before you hit record. I’m a tense player. I’ve gotten to the point that I can finally recognize when I’m tense and get myself back to a relaxed state. Thank God for all the C.G.P.’s.😂I’ve got a GREAT repertoire of songs. My buzzword when I think of recording is “uncomfortable.” Makes you stay honest. Started playing regularly at the local retirement home. That’s been a big help and just a good time. We all have a good time. Don’t know if I teach them much but my Son, Niece and Nephew all share a love of music. This is a great lesson. You can basically substitute any discipline in the place of guitar and this video still makes sense.

Joe, I have played for over 60 years and still do 30-45 dates a year. I whole heartedly agree with your recommendations and absolutely concur with the priority in which you presented them. I still have work to do on a few aspects as we all will as long as we breathe. Great video man thanks! Recording yourself and deliberate practice have helped me a lot. One thing I would add regarding recording… Eric Skye a great finger style jazz guitarist suggests making bad recordings, bad in the sense of recording quality. iPhone does this well. The point is to hear yourself and get better. By deliberately making quick low quality recordings, one avoids the allure of plug ins and engineering. My practice is to record myself, listen to it, make notes and delete the recording during the same practice session.

What were you playing in the intro?
I am an older guitarist rekindling my childhood interest when I played in bands. I have no one to play with. Is it possible to play with others on Zoom and what do you think about playing along with CZcams videos? I often do that with your videos.
Love it, I think Zoom calls are a great way to connect with other players and trade songs. My Coaching Community members do this weekly in the live room. Love that you are playing along with CZcams. I find external feedback in one form or another to be extremely helpful

Thanks for this. Can you say a little more about *how* you work on relaxing your hands and arms? I know for certain that this is a problem I have; but I don't know how to go about fixing it. When I notice it, it's not so hard to relax; but as soon as it's not my main focus, I tense back up again.

Hey Joe, ive been doing your course online, i’m on the intermediate course now but i’m still finding that beginners course songs are not perfect (freight train and streets of london). How long does it take you to learn a song at your stage and how long does it take someone usually in your experience newish to travis picking to really nail a song?
Glad you’re working through the beginner course as well as intermediate, you can ask questions in the course, I don’t see all comments here, but I see all post in the courses. If new to Fingerstyle, I think you can expect 6 weeks or so to learn a piece, the more tunes you can play the quicker it will be to learn new ones. At my stage it depends on the complexity, if it’s a very intricate arrangement can take weeks. If a simple part no time at all

Thanks Joe! Great points, and all doable, but the 1st one... How does one even approach making a habit of playing with better musicians? Can't think of a way to get such people play with me at all...
Here are 5 suggestions:
-take lessons from a local teacher, ask them if they have more advanced students that might be down to jam
-attend local gigs and talk to the musicians, ask them if you can bring your guitar along one time to play a song
-make a list of local players in your area and find ways to connect with them, DM on social media, ask if you can be a roadie for their gigs or help them with promotion, be a likable person, read Dale Carnegie
-try putting a band or guitar duo/trio together, be the responsible member who organizes rehearsals, material etc - you’ll be able to connect with more experienced players who may be lazier. Continue to work your way up
These are not overnight solutions but in my opinion this is the way to actually do it. It’s what I did.

I'm From Rwanda Africa I have tried to Access on Backing track but they told me that they don't found my confirmation Email help me I have chosen as good teacher and I'm not Wrong so how can I access on it
Hey joe, how do you recommend structuring a practice routine? I always feel like I am practicing too much technique or “concepts”, but when I make my practice mostly songs, I feel like I’m not learning enough musical concepts or raw technique, and I’m stuck in a spiral. Do you think that practice should be mostly songs and less technique/theory?
I’d suggest using a practice journal, practicing in 15 minute time blocks, a 60 minute session for me might look like:
15 - LH / RH daily exercises (technique)
15 - Scale or difficult passage of a song (something that requires brainpower)
15 - Working on a song slowly with a metronome (something repetitive)
15 - Playing other songs from your repertoire

I will check out the masterclass. My typical 4 hour schedule looks like this
1 hour: Reptoire, usually 6 songs 10 min each, with a metronome and slow to work on problem areas (all chet atkins/merle travis tunes right now)
1 hour: Classical fingerstyle,
20 min on technique/etudes
40 min on a piece im working on
1 hour: Jazz lead
20 min excercises in one scale position,
20 min writing lines using target notes
20 min practicing written lines
1 hour: Harmony
20 min harmonizing melodies using triads all over the neck, with spread notes
20 min comping the same standard im practicing lead lines over
20 min trying to work out a solo arrangment of same standard
I want to combine jazz and fingerstyle with a thumbpick and be able to write my own arrangments and improvise, but I constantly second guess if what I'm practing will get me there. In your experience, did you deliberatley "practice'" arranging and improvising, or did you just learn tons of songs, and eventually based on these songs gain the ability to write your own?

When trying to build a repertoire of fingerstlye songs, is it best to learn one song perfectly, without mistakes or start on the next once the notes are memorised? I’m really struggling to play anything from start to finish without a good helping of bum notes. After giving up guitar for over 15 years I have picked it up again about 2 years ago, playing exclusively fingerstlye
I think it's really important to learn songs that are well arranged, if the songs are vague it makes it much more difficult. I recommend learning a song so that you can play it start to finish, without stopping - but it doesn't need to be flawless. Better to move on and keep making progress. Learning the right songs is key, so that you don't feel frustrated.
Thank you for this. I purchased a book of arrangements by another guy on CZcams, Boris Mogilevski, kind of lower intermediate level arrangements with plenty of open strings and basic chords. I’m feeling pretty frustrated as I feel the arrangements a much easier to play than I am making them

I have troubles with my fingers.Actully,the tips of my middle,and ring finger of a left hand become ticker as I get older and fater,so they mute chords when playing.I lift up weights for a years,and now i have big strong hands.I'll have to cut my self,becouse operation is expensive!I played for a whole my life,and now it suddenly becomes a big problem.I just bought a new guitar and I can"t play!😣🖖

Everyone says to play with peoe better then you, but what if we dont know anyone else who is a musician or plays? How do you find people who are better then you and that are also cool with a shotty playing stranger joining them to jam?
You go and talk to them, ask questions, if there is a local teacher, ask if they have any students that want a jamming partner. Can be someone slightly further along in their journey. Can be a teacher you pay. I think most people would be surprised that players are friendly and it makes people feel good to do favors for people. Never hurts to ask and of course it’s always good to be a polite and likable person, people will go out of their way to help people like that.
