Hello, I’m Joe - I’m a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer and teacher!
On this channel you’ll find my original songs, covers and solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements. My favorite music doesn’t fit neatly in a box so you may hear me play folk, blues, jazz, & classic rock - you can call it what you want; I feel honored to speak this timeless language of melody, harmony & rhythm.
I was born on May 25th 1991 in Kempsey, NSW, Australia. Since 2010 I have been based in the US and currently live in the Rocky Mountains of Montana with my wife, Genevieve (who teaches illustration on CZcams!).
I play Maton acoustic guitars, made in Australia (just like me) and am very proud to have my own signature instrument, the JR Signature!

Absolutely love your sincerity. I am 72 have been playing since I turned 9. Never had a teacher like you and I cannot play in the same stratosphere as you do. Not even close. I have however come to realize that the love for music comes from within. I now have three guitars. A HD-28, ES-335 and an epiphone. I find keeping things really simple has helped me. I love your music. One song that you play (youtube studio) is definitely your sound. The prize, and the other song that you do. Those two songs are in my opinion, the sound you should be after. Your songs are not sad, they are uplifting and extremely enjoyable. All the best to you.
Thanks Joe for a clear and honest vision. I reckon that dive into pedals is part of the journey; it answers curiousity, helps to find a personal taste but. I ended up with no pedals for the road (and yes, a Kemper for playing at home and quick recording🤫😉)

love this input. thx. this was what I needed to hear. I been googling pedeler for last week or so. just because I felt I was missing something.
I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us, Joe. I'm an acoustic player learning about the world of electric guitars and I felt like I had to jump down a hundred rabbit holes before I could understand exactly which pedals I would need, which adjustment knobs I'd have to have on an amp, Jensen vs. Celestion speakers, speaker size... I always felt that minimalism when it comes to gear was the most enjoyable path. Some of my acoustic guitar heroes like Tony Rice didn't use any type of amplification besides a microphone. I want my focus to be on my learning and playing, not making 75 decisions for what gear to buy! You're one of my favorite players and an opinion that I trust, so I feel great hearing that you think the same way. I think I might pick up a Pro Jr and two or three pedals at most and see how it goes!

I totally resonate with this sentiment. I've never spent much time or money on pedals because I always wanted to find my original sound as organically as possible. Now I've pivoted to learning classical and fingerstyle on nylon so when I get back to writing, I'll have more technical skill and hopefully I'll have escaped the clutches of my comfort zone. Hope you're doing great man.
Very cool. I think you are exactly right about the sequence of finding your own sound. You did have the advantage of a no distractions childhood skill wise. The creativity is in all of us, but in some, like you, it's a bigger gift. Please do your guitars. And a reading list update. See you at LOS next time around SoCal!

We don't often start out with a premium guitar . But when experience and a great guitar come together, not much gear is needed !

Joe, great insight and perspective. I have played since the 1970s and just never got into all the pedals and boxes. Some are needed if you have to recreate every top 40 hit on stage but I enjoyed the pure joy of coaxing the best sound you could get out of a wooden box or a great solid body and a great amp. You are right, there is something magical about that.

It's interesting this video popped up, I've just been thinking about reducing the number of pedals on my board, like sticking with one overdrive and reverb. Congratulations on your move to a beautiful place, best of luck in your creative endeavors!
Very interesting and insightful video. Thanks for a look at the pedals you use and your thoughts about them. I have never been a big pedal guy although I play electric guitar 90% of the time. I usually have an MXR compressor, Delay, Overdrive pedal and the occasional Looper. Lately I mostly use inexpensive multi-effect pedals using primarily the previously mentioned effects. I think that too many pedals get in the way.

A couple years ago I was heavily into pedals and building my awesome board. That thing weighed probably 25lbs towards the end, plus I had plenty that wouldn’t even fit in the board. I fiddled with that thing every day. But I found that I spent more time messing with my pedals than I did actually playing my guitar. So I liquidated virtually all of my pedals and bought myself a Headrush and some FRFR cabinets. I’ll never go back to individual pedals again. I do still have a couple great tube amps of course.

Great video Joe. I agree completely; I've been a minimalist forever. At first it was because I couldn't afford a lot of gear, but now it's because it suits me. I bought a Spark amp, and despite the fact that the thing can sound like just about any amp with any combo of pedals, 90% of the time I play with the settings that mimic my favorite set up from 40 years ago: a Fender Deluxe with an MXR compressor and a Boss Overdrive. The Fender amp is long gone, but I still have my Boss Overdrive pedal that I bought back in college.
jsyk, my husband is really enjoying your guitar course. He is working on becoming a great luthier and is also slowly getting some guitar gear together. He has a Maton too! Baby steps :) Thanks for sharing!
Great video on less is more, and welcome to the west. On the humidy I use a Vornado I bought off Amazon, it hold 5 gallons of water and has dial to set the humidity level so it doesn't run constantly. In the throws of winter, it will run all the time.
I'm only a guitar hobbyist who only plays at home for fun to an audience of 1 and a dog. I couldn't agree more with finding a good tube amp and maybe a few pedals. I've spent thousands on modeling gear and FRFR Powered Speakers/cabs trying to find that sound. Finding that sound all ended after purchasing a 20-watt Marshall Jubilee Combo Tube amp. Cheers.

Great video…I’ve been lately getting sucked into that pedal hole but snapped out of it with the purchase of a inexpensive Fender modeling amp…playing with it I thought my god who could possibly use all these sounds & basically set it to the sound I already had with my other older tube amps..go figure.
So yes I agree, less is more.
My daughter went to college in Montana, MSU & I fell in love with the place haven’t been able to talk the wife into making the move though, to harsh in winters.

Fun to see your amp collection. My first real amp was a 67 Deluxe Reverb that I unfortunately sold in 74 but many years later I replaced it with a Vibrolux Reverb which is a great amp but now when I play an electric I use a Vibro Champ with a Boss 63 Fender Reverb pedal the one pedal I still use. Your playing is spectacular good luck with your journey.

I've recently found my sound with my gear. Bought a 2020 LP classic, which sounds amazing. I am only using a Tube Factor into my Deluxe Reverb Tone Master with a Spark booster and a Keeley Compressor after the Tube Factor and a HoF in the end of the chain and it's the best sound I've ever created. The Tube Factor is by far the best sounding overdrive pedal I've ever heard. The KoT is a joke against it. At least in my setup. Planning on modding the Tube Factor with the Okko mod though.

If I ever get back to playing, I often think what gear would I like to have. I think a Tele, Fender Vibro Champ with a reverb, OD, and delay. I think that might do it. Of course, one of these latest small modeling amps for when the high gain side of me feels like playing. Thanks for sharing another fine video.
I use a tweed blues junior amp, my first tube amp! Loving the sound off of it and like you say it’s easy to get carried away chasing tone through pedals which I’m guilty of also along with many other musicians 😅 saw Tommy live a few times and his shows are mesmerising and his playing is unbelievable. Really interesting presentation mate. I have just gone through a similar process (not moving to Montana from Newie in Oz) but stripping back the signal chain. Levinson Blade "strat" into Boss SD1 overdrive, then delay and chorus into my old tweed blues deluxe.... loving it. Hope the year is a good one for you...all the best.

Brian Lizotte has been trying to retire/sell Lizottes restaurant/venue in Newcastle for some time now, but has not found a buyer ... so we may be losing this beautiful intimate venue soon. (Ihave seen you there a couple of times over the years... he also recently hosted Robben Ford and Mat Schofield .... ) Keeping our fingers crossed.
I definitely agree Joe I play through a fender champ and it makes all the difference I only have two multi fx pedals a zoom 3030 from the 90s and a Boss GT1 that’s all I need for delay and reverb yeah a real amp brings life to the sound great video your new place looks Amazing 👌🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸😊💫🎸
Love the info. I think the gear thing is a process you have to go through. If someone told you 10 yrs ago, what you would consolidate back to, you may not have believed them. I haven’t got heaps of gear, cos I am a bit of a tight arse. Happy to spend good money on guitars. I would love to try a couple more amps, other than my supersonic. Keep doing what you are doing

Really interesting video even though there's no music. Much of what you say 'resonates' with me, pardon the pun! I'm with you on the simplicity thing, less is more. I'm not so into the pedals but hearing your rationale and philosophy behind your choices was fascinating. I like my valve/tube amps which I find have that lovely warm lush sound. I wrote a long post on my pedalboards and my views of pedals, and then I felt too narcissistic so I deleted it.
I would love to hear about your guitar collection, and how you to decide on what to keep and what to purchase. And I would like to understand your insights into insuring your equipment.
Obviously, you are a professional musician, but I know I struggle with owning six guitars (one classical, one steel-string, three teles w/ g-benders, and one tele w/ a Bigsby). Last year I sold two strats to buy one of my teles. I know I would like to acquire an Esquire w/ g-bender, a baritone, an archtop, and a vintage Martin D-35. (I have never been a guy who wanted one of everything, though.)
I use a Fender twin and a green tube screamer not that I’m an expert but that s what I like
I practice on an acoustic or my Stratocaster and not even plug it in alot of the time and I feel like I sound like me no matter what thanx for sharing the music my friend 🎶🇨🇦❤

Just a question, what is the string spacing at the bridge of your acoustic guitars? And the body depth as well, say at lower bout? Are these 2 specs key for you on how easily playable your guitar will be?

I don't remember who wrote this but there's a whole philosophy about how we perform better and we have constraints. It works for most writers for instance. They have to write a book with a certain amount of words.
I remember once I got to a gig and just took a single pedal cause I forgot the other ones. It was one of my best gigs so far

No pedal can replace ones fingers for tone.. Danny gatton played clean.. Jerry reed. Hendrix used very few pedals.. a fuzztone in the early days and thats it!..Its ALL in the hands and fingers.Most guitarists are looking for an easy fix

Hello once again, I want to ask you a question? Have you listen to any of the great Gypsy Jazz guitar players like the Stochelo Rosenberg or Joscho Stephan or Angelo Debarr?
I do remember the difficulty when I first started listening to the old Django recordings I could not get past the bad recording sound and after many years later I don’t hear the recording quality anymore I just hear his playing, and listen carefully his choice of phrasing and movement. All this to say that gear is fine but in the final analysis one guitar will do. I too have lots of left over gear from the late 70’s and 80’s. Amazing how one becomes attached to these things. Oh yes, those are some of my favorites. Bireli too. Joshco and I are friends and have performed together before. John Jorgenson and I have also worked together a lot. It's pretty incredible the influence Django had on many players, including the late Jeff Beck.

That all along the watchtower vid sounded more like an envelope follower than a wha.
Every decision joe makes is with the sole focus of making himself the best player possible. The only other person I’ve seen with such focus is the footballer Ronaldo.
