Hey guys! This week on Weekend Wankshop, we're going to be paying tribute to one of the greatest artist rock has ever seen, Chris Cornell. Many of you know him from his work with Soundgarden, but he also enjoyed success with numerous other bands like Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, and his solo career. He's absolutely one of Uncle Ben's favorite singers of all times, but i've always thought he was a SUPER underrated guitarist and riff writer! So today we are gonna learn some of my favorite riffs from my top 5 favorite songs on Superunknown, my favorite record of theirs! We're going to talk about how to play (and how to get your guitar into the crazy tunings used for) Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, the title track, Limo Wreck, and 4th of July.
If you or anyone you know is wrestling with suicidal thoughts or depression, please use the vast resources the internet has to offer and GET HELP! There's so many places where anyone can get free anonymous help out there, i've included a few numbers and sites at the end of this video. If someone as godlike as Chris can wrestle with these kinda of issues, i think that completely validates it for mere mortals like us to have the same problems, too. GET HELP!
Cheers everyone, thank you to Chris for all the amazing music. - Hudba
Saw them on the "Louder Than Love" Tour and he was like this biblical looking god of a man, leaning out over the crowd seemingly 7 feet tall, melted my brain!
You're already one of my heroes, but the ending of this video was really touching. I feel like too many people feel ashamed of their depression and such and just feel too ashamed to talk to anyone about it. I think it really does make a difference when people such as yourself tell them it's okay to seek help.
love love love 4th of July!
Thought I was the only one
But that was just a lie
4th of july is probably my favorite guitar tone ever, just so simple but sludgy with a little weird timing thrown in. Great Album!
Mine too.
My favorite riff
Superunknown is a masterclass of imaginative riff-making. The whole guitar playings of the whole album is flawlessly delicious, the best of its era and among the bests in rock history. Having a creative drummer and smart bassist help too.
Limo Wreck is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs
Limo wreck sounds like a series of mastodon riffs lol. So sick
And it's a fucking waltz at that. A waltz about the world ending.
anthony sammartino But Soundgarden is actually good, unlike Mastodon
was lucky enough to see them at the same festival...in april before he died. rip.. yeah they are both great, of course soundgarden is monumental, but mastodon has their own thing. no sense in comparing but we know really who is most legendary. those guys definitely like soundgarden too, who wouldnt?
Wrong. Maston riffs sound like a series of limo wreck 😡
the unUSEFULidiot yeah don’t get it twisted!
Definitely will be missed. Soundgarden was the anti Nirvana for me. Melodic, kinda creepy, and those insane vocals. Another great and honorable tribute. Well done
I love what you said about the Anti Nirvana, I was never a Nirvana fan, however in a culture of rock bands fighting each other and sabotaging each other Chris Cornell got all the bands of the Seattle scene to work together, and promoted an environment of cooperation among the bands. He sung on AIC's "Right Turn" on the SAP EP. What an amazing man and musician.
As a fan of both, I think the hits make Nirvana look like just another band with power chords, screams and stupid lyrics, but if you actually listen to them, they're way more than that, some lyrics are actually really deep and have great vocals in my opinion. But yeah, Soundgarden still gets the prize for being that musically complex, which Nirvana ain't at all.
I've been depressed (and other mental stuff...) for some years and, when this happened, something snapped inside of me, because I thought the exact same words you said at 14:33 . I was like "I'm depressed because I feel useless, but Chris, the great Chris just commited suicide? What's the point of everything?". I felt like, if life didn't have a point, I might as well stop being afraid of failure and pick up the guitar again, which I had abandoned years ago. I started playing and, when something didn't go well, I'd search for tutorials and videos of better guitar players. Some months later here I am, trying to play 4th of July and I find a video where you say the exact same words that came to my mind the day Chris died. It's weird, it's like a circle that just closed or something...
Much love, brother. Hope you're doing alright.
My god, Limo Wreck is probably my favorite Soundgarden song. That song is literally perfect! I'm gonna write a song now in this tuning or something similar.
So many innovative and creative riffs.
The riff at 10:07 is pure genius.
Ben, I've been looking at guitar lessons here on CZcams for years and it's rare to find someone that can combine verbal instruction with accurate playing without boring me to death.
You really do have a gift of making an instructional video that keeps the viewer engaged.
Thank you and well done!
RIP Chris
Very cool tribute Ben, thanks
4th of july is easy, but sounds REALLY awesome, such a monster riff
I'm a drummer, and I remember after the album came out I got a copy of modern drummer with Matt Cameron on the cover...he broke down some of the song's time signatures and explained them with notation...his explanation of Limo Wreck? "This is just your everyday average song in 15/8 timing!". Loved this band!!!
The odd time signatures in their songs are proof of their talent, the lyrics were always allowed to find their proper flow and to suggest or dictate the meter. I've heard a lot of terrible songwriters that are squeezing vocal phrases in a spot, or stretching the phrases somewhere else, all because they can only play in 4/4.
Nice Les Paul dude. RIP Chris. A voice of a Generation X. Much love to his family...
As a non-musician and Soundgarden fan, all I've known for years is that these songs sound great. Fascinating to see the technicalities of it. Incredible imagination, skill and talent. RIP.
RIP - a real legend whose impact will never be forgotten. Thank you for the touching tribute.
I live in Seattle ,and was lucky enough to me him once. Not only a nice and generous guy, but. One of the most under rated singers! as well.RIP CHRIS.
This gave me chills... MASSIVE RESPECT.
Uncle Ben, you are an amazing man.
I loved your videos before, but the ending to this video is really touching. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks Ben, great words there at the end! And I always appreciate your tips on shredding.
Thanks for putting this one out, Ben. I've loved Soundgarden since middle school and only now got around to actually playing some of their stuff. Chris was awesome and is your tribute to him.
Solid tribute, great video!
Favorote riffs from Superunknown...hmmm lets see ALL OF THEM! the whole album is a master peice!
R.I.P. Chriss.
Best tribute out there! Thanx.
Thank you Uncle Ben for putting Fourth of July in this video....... Only thing that would of beat that w9uld be if you could sing Jesus christ pose or Over floater whilst playing!!!! Sad Chris is gone......Thanks for the tribute video!!!
Thank you for this Ben awesomely done as usual. RIP Chris
Love that you picked 4th of July. I remember hearing it for the first time, thinking I've never heard anything like this. Superunknown was the first CD I ever had - listened to it on repeat for ages. I'm blown away that I still have that same feeling when I hear that ominous riff, still like no other. Like Cornell.. one of a kind
OMG BEN you're making me cry! Thank you for making this video, it's been almost 2 years since my God and my hero, Chris Cornell died and it's still very raw. Thank you for this lesson, and thank you what you said at the end. I'm not kidding. I'm really tearing up at work right now. Thanks a lot! All the love.
I wish I could like this video more than once... especially your talk at the end and resources you provided..... You're a good man Uncle Ben.
Touching video, and great ending of support for anyone suffering! Well done sir! RIP Chris.
timely and well done. respect. RIP CC
Great video very informative also would like to say thank you for taking the time to express how you felt and offering advice at the end for people struggling with depression. Thankyou again
Great Video, Great Album, Great Riffs. Incredible Artist!
Great tribute to Chris. Good job, Ben.
awesome video man...that was the very first album I ever got on CD back when I was 16. one of my favorite albums..
Great video, and more importantly, a great message at the end. No matter how happy, wealthy, or successful someone may appear to be, we never know what is really going on inside their head. We have to get rid of the stigma of mental health, so people that need the help will seek it out before doing something so extreme.
Thoughts and love to the Cornell family and all of the great people Chris worked with over a huge career.
#RIPChrisCornell #SayHelloToHeaven
Thanks a lot for this video, these are pretty good and fun-to-play riffs that you showed with such quality and generosity. My personal favorite song and opening riff from this album is "Let Me Drown", such a punch-in-the-face song that pretty much let's you know what good music you are going to listen through this record. For the end, I normally don't comment on videos, but you really touched me with you kindness towards people who are suffering from depression, as well as graditude towards Cornell. That made me this video 10 times greater. Thanks again, have a good jam and take care! :)
Well done bro! Thanks for this and thank you Cornell
Honestly, Limo Wreck is known by few, but absolutely is my fav song too. Randomly tried to learn it tonight. Thank you!
Thanks for this uncle Ben!
Thank you Chris" the greatest ever! great work to you too bud!!
Thank you, Ben.
Thanx uncle Ben you're a legend
right on uncle Ben!!!!
This was lovely x well handled Uncle Ben x
Fantastic video. Congratulations.
Fantastic video Ben. Thanks for the message at the end... I bought superunknown on CD the week it came out and it's been in my permanent rotation ever since... One of 15 albums on my phone.
Thank you uncle Ben!
I could play all the riffs before but I watched this anyway when I found it, great choices! Limo Wreck and 4th Of July especially are absolutely amazing songs... I'm too young to have grown up with Soundgarden but I do really love hearing and playing their music
great video. your awesome for adding in the end part!!! Depression is no joke, but theres always someone there for you. just reach out and dont keep it all in.
I really loved him and Kim as guitarists and you basically covered my favorite riffs in Superunknown. I also love Limo Wreck 's riff above them all. And yeah, I also had several Superunknown CDs throughout the years because I can listen to it all day long. Sigh...
great job all the way around with this video, especially the end.
great video man. really well played and really well said.
Thank you so much for this video. Superunknow is such a special collection of songs. Always wanted to play Limo Wreck. It's my first time watching your channel and I'm subscribing. Thanks Ben!!
Really cool video! Man, he knew how to write some killer riffs. 4th Of July is my favourite from Superunknown, I only wish I could've felt the power of that riff live!
Great video and I do agree with you, great great album...very creative and talented people are often very sensitiv in so many ways and sadly often struggle with depression and dark thoughts..
thanks for doing such a great job honoring a legend
Very great video all around
Pretty straightforward video, informative and easy to learn from. Good work
Nice Tribute Ben. Thanks Buddy.
Superunknown was the first album I ever owned. It will always be one of my favorites.
Thanks for this.
Cool stuff Ben, love the Les Paul too.
Thanks for the cool riffs.
Nice one Uncle
yup, nice tribute Ben
As the guitarist for the Seattle based soundgarden & temple of the dog tribute, OUTSHINED, I say well done, sir. We had a show schedule 2 days after he passed & of course, it became a memorial show for him & my last show in Seattle before I moved 2100 miles the following day to TX. It was among one of my most memorable shows by far. The man that made me move to Seattle 21 years ago died 3 days before I left. It doesn't get any stranger. We love you, Chris. "No one sings like you anymore."
Well that's another strange thing for me to find. My two favorite vocalists were Ronnie Dio and Chris Cornell, Dio died on the 16th of May of 2010, Chris on the 17th of May. That is one strange coincidence, and so is the one that affected your life as well. I hope you get to play as much as you did in Texas, Mr Sharp!
Loved Dio as well! Thank you for the compliment, buddy!
i dont think thats a coincidence cause i hate dio, more than most vocalists really, including maiden guy. but chris is my fav. lmao
These riffs are yummy. I need to listen to this album.
Well played, man.
Superunknown really influenced me a lot as a guitarist. I go back and listen to it a lot and still feel moved by it.
Chris was one of the most important artists over the last 20+ years imo. Rest in peace.
thanks for an amazing video.
especially the end with your thoughts on depression. I am sure that'll help someone.
Mega!
wanna see another riffs from another Soundgarden records
Extremely cool dude. Thank you for the showcase of Black Hole Sun. Because of the barred 4th shape it reminds me of Tarkus. Ultimately I've always wanted to learn the song on guitar but never bothered because every time it is on I just sing it and move on.
Cheers :)
great video
Great vid. Love the shirt. RIP Chris :/
Sweet vid, Limo wreck is my favourite SG song, period.
Also subbed :)
Mailman. my fave Soundgarden tune.
Holy fuck! I wasn't expecting the Lonely Rolling Stars back track!
Also, very awesome video. Great tribute.
Uncle Ben is the man.
You're a good man uncle Ben!
I don't wanna seem like a band wagon rider, but before the Twitter need I honestly hadn't heard of Chris, but after listening to several of songs I can tell I'm gonna be listening to him for many more years. that makes three truly great guitarist to pass in just this year. dang.
It's been a really sad couple of days. Total shock. Much love, Uncle Ben.
Also, them tunings, what the fuck?
Joe Oliver imagine if they just stuck to boring standard or drop d, hardly any of their incredible riffs would exist.
Variations on open tunings and drop tunings most of them. Other tunings they used: CGCGGE, BADGBE, and EEBBBE. The latter two were coined on the Badmotorfinger record, another must listen.
Carlo Von Sexron between sound garden and Chris's solo work, they've used like 30 different tunings. pretty cool really. Not many guitarist even mess with alternate tunings.
Hats off to you sir! Great video, touching ending!
great vid uncle Ben, the ending was touching and the riffs where great choises (personally fresh tendrils is my fav though).Cool to see you do something not sweepy and technical, sometimes you gotta go back to the core of guitar music: big phat tasty riffs. riff in peace C. C.
Super cool riffs. You do a really awesome job with these videos; good pace, great framing, outta sight explaining.
Was hoping for a riff or two from Head Down, though. Nonetheless, big thumb up!
So happy to hear SOMEONE rate LIMO WRECK for the legendary track it is... AND great channel...
Good on ya mate.
cheers ben, it's so fucking sad what happened. take care pal. thanks for this vid
LIMO WRECK and 4th! DUDE it's the best songs!
my fav too...
Probably the only guy on CZcams that teaches all the notes accurately
Respect for using Your Lonely Rolling Star from the Katamari Damacy soundtrack over your animated intro!
Great one Ben, I always played Spoonman in a slightly different way (hammer on insted of the slide on the second chord and so on) but I think your version is more accurate. I think another one people tend to get slightly wrong is Let Me Drown... too bad you didn't cover that!
Watching this again -- If I could double thumbs up this video I would.
respect for that ending dude. RIP Chris
Great ending too.
Hey Uncle Ben--great video as always but I wanted to say the whole last part of the video whenr you came back on screen once you heard it was an apparent suicide was a really great thing to do.The part about anyone can have problems and sometimes just talking to someone can prevent them from harming themselves, and the person on the other side of the conversation might not even know they possibly prevented their friend from dying. I know this is approx 6 weeks old but somehow I missed it when new and wanted to say I think that you saying what you said could have done the same for someone out there having a really hard time .....You have gone way above and beyond what many with the platform and ability to reach thousands of people would care enough to do
-----Sorry my comment turned into a novel....Keep it up ,and just for the record--- I still suck at sweep picking --haha, Thanks,
Bernierizzo
Kim is an underrated guitarist and his creative use of various tunings to achieve his catchy riffs.
