chris was an amazing guitarist. he wasn't a dumb shredder, he was an amazing riff creating machine. chris, Kim, Ben and Matt created some badass tunings too. very well done video btw.

Cornell was such an under appreciated and innovative guitarist
I've always loved the "wall of sound" Soundgarden create on their albums with those guitars, especially on Superunknown and DOTU, where they started mixing clean tone and distortion, basically becoming the Led Zeppelin of our generation. Then you have Matt's unique drumming, Kim's crazy solos, Ben's psychedelic stuff and that AWESOME voice.
Brilliant band, absolutely the best band from Seattle if you ask me. No disrespect to Nirvana, AIC and Pearl Jam (I fucking love all of them), but Soundgarden have always been on a whole different level.
Just a few days before the passing of Chris I was surfing the web in search of some news about a new Soundgarden's album, dreaming about how good it would have been. Great loss for rock music and music in general.
It was a sad day when I found out Chris Cornell had passed. I seen them twice live. A great lesson here. Thank you for the great lesson. R.I.P. Cris Cornell
dude, these videos are great. I've played for years,but as I'm self taught I've never really 'learned' anything. I've unintentionally stopped playing these last couple of years and am soon giving myself a kick up the backside to start playing again. Awesome video and great guitar tone! What I like about SG is that Kim and Chris used interesting tuning techniques not for show off shredder virtuosity (trend of the 80's), but for easier playing and sonic heaviness. SUB-stance over style.
Came for my love of Soundgarden, stayed for the BEAUTIFUL mirrored polish on that SG. Respect.

what a brilliant video! I've been using some of these techniques while covering Soundgarden but never realised how novel they were. Chris and Kim was/are true geniuses.

Great video as always, Chris was a hugely underrated guitar player in my opinion. I actually understood how good he was not that long ago despite being a fan of the band for years and years, mainly because he was that great of a vocalist that I didn't even think of him that way.
I know you probably have a gigantic list of artists to cover on this series, but do you think about making a video more focused on Thayil's lead guitar too?

I have 2 suggestions: Vernon Reid 's greatest guitar techniques! And Duane Denison (from Tomahawk, Jesus Lizard and Legendary Shack Shakers). Both very unique, robust and underestimated players who never really got the credit they deserved. BtW the Dime episode is a mainstay for me, real insightful!

how did u get that rotary effect on the "black hole sun" slide technique? any particular brand, model, etc pedal? & is that the same effect ur using on the high triad apreggios? as always, great lesson! i learn a lot from ur vids.
+mjt11860 Honestly I did it after the fact in Pro Tools adding the effects with plugins. That being said I loved the rotary so much I may buy a pedal. I used a flanger plugin for the triad part with a high rate speed.

7/4 is one of the most known and popular time signatures from the 90s. If there's a time signature I really love it's 9/8.

A trick I use for 7/4 and 5/4 is to break up the measures into groups of 3 and 4 (or 2). Counting "7" sucks with two syllables.
Who is actually forcing you to pronounce the second syllable in your head? People abbreviate names all the time and know whom they are talking about. Give yourself the freedom to call Seven "Sev" if it helps.
For those who don't know the reason Chris was so good at those odd timing signatures was because he started as Soundgarden's drummer and he used to sing while playing drums until it became too difficult

I don't really know how you're hearing the Outshined riff like that, ur playing extra notes when Kim Thayil just slides down the neck and starts the riff again, sounds way cooler

Originality will always prevail but I do think a lot of people believe that by going to music college you're instantly going to find success in the music field. Far from the truth.

You're playing the end of the "Outshined" riff wrong. It just holds on the F then slides up quickly right at the end. No idea where you got that extra G and F from!

I don’t think some of this is true. All respect to Chris Cornell (RIP) who was one of the great voices, but I think it was Kim Thayil who invented the unusual guitar style of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell got into it over time, most likely under Kim’s tutelage, and then they probably started splitting roles and collaborating. But the heart (and the orchestrator) of the guitar sound was always Kim. Just listen to Chris’ guitar playing with other bands to confirm this - it’s very different. There just isn’t enough credit being given to Kim and I keep wondering why.

Love your vidoes but this was not your best. Most of these are just very simple and very common techniques hardly unique to Soundgarden at all.
Also I think leaving out some of Soundgardens unique tunings (Drop B, CGCGGE, EEBBBB, etc) seems like a big omission as well as leaving out some of Kim Thayils preferred modes. Was a great pointer about the Wah-filter for Rusty Cage though, seems so obvious now but I never realized that was where that tone came from.
You had me till you compared him to Eddie Vedder in a negative way, , Eddie Vedder is very very talented, just wasnt bi-polar or as self involved,. its also drop d they plyed in, like Black Sabbash, the band the Chefs used to cover in Chicago, when Chris was the drummer
