Kim is a very respectful man. He managed to say things without actually saying them. I'd love for the new album to be released. The person holding the audio files should release them to the band.

@@brandenhartley9300 so that's her fault ? wow is she greedy or something ?
mot00rzysta apparently it's just a matter of who the money from the material will benefit. So kinda greed yes.
He's one of the most underrated guitarists ever. His sound is so unique.
Why is he underrated?
I just never see his name in lists of top guitarists.
I love the way he uses the wah pedal during his solos. When I was 12-13 I didnt even know what a wah pedal is and it was the time that I started listening to rock music and with Kim solos I would say to my self: "Wth is this amazing sound?!? Do electric guitars sound like this?? "
He made a wonderful self-deprecating joke about himself in an interview in a guitar magazine I read many years ago, and it sticks with me to this day. I don't remember the exact quote, but to paraphrase:
"My guitar skill surprasses 97% of the players out there. Unfortunately, the top 3% are in this business."
He was called the "guitar guru"
Kim has too much dignity and love and respect for Chris, (and Soundgarden) that he will not be drawn into a bitching session over retrieving the vocals for what should have been their next album. Kim Thayil is an absolute gem.
He is like the Indian guru of rock. Love this dude so much.
Call me crazy but I would really love to see Pearl Jam, AIC, the remaining members of Nirvana and Soundgarden all do a tour together playing each other's music. That would be pretty special! 🎵
Yes
Classy guy. I think the issue is clear, but Kim is diplomatic.
@throathammer1 Agree - hope he wins out on this in the end, very smart fella
Kim has always been diplomatic and intelligent about things. Class act.
I admire him for maintaining grace under fire these past few years. Must be difficult for everyone involved
Fuck widows
throathammer1 I read somewhere that he was a psych major in college. Not 100% on that though.
"I do not see us reconfiguring without him" thank you Kim, you're a great man. thank you Kim, Matt and Ben for the respect you have for Chris and the band and the legacy of Soundgarden
I just realized how devastated I still am. Soundgarden has been such a massive influence in my life since '92.

Love to you, Kim. We all miss Chris so much.
Hearing new Cornell vocals posthumously is sure to bring tears to very many people...joy and sadness. Rock's greatest singer, writer and poet...Rest in peace.
I'll never get tired of saying how phenomenal a talent Chris Cornell was. Great writer, incredible singer, versatile, and an amazing live performer.
Me either❤
Kim needs to keep going. His style needs to be recorded again and again.
It broke my heart when he mentioned knowing Chris ever since they were "kids" (Kim in his early 20s and Chris still in his teens when they met) -- especially when his voice cracked ever-so-slightly, showing how much he's still grieving the loss of not just a band-mate but his long-time friend as well. While some bands have continued to record and tour after the loss of a vocalist/frontman (whether via quitting, being fired or death), and have gone on to either to maintain the success they'd 'til then enjoyed or build more upon it (AC/DC and Van Halen being but a couple examples of those -- some continued on under a different name like The Minutemen did when they lost D. Boon and became fIREHOSE after adding Ed "From Ohio" Crawford), there are certain vocalists whose one-of-a-kind personalities and presence become so intrinsically-linked to the character of the band that they fronted that fans just can't imagine them being replaced and accepting the given band without that specific person at the helm. Chris Cornell, in my opinion, is one of those singers who can not be replaced. It was right for Kim and the others to determine that Soundgarden couldn't be a viable band, going forward, without Cornell as frontman. Now, that doesn't mean, as Thayill mentioned early-on in this interview, that the surviving members can't release albums featuring previously-unreleased material (b-sides, demos, outtakes, covers, etc.) -- just not continue recording new albums with new material as Soundgarden.
Shruggz Da Str8-Faced Clown me too I was 🥺 almost
Now, it might it be interesting if the surviving members of Soundgarden and Audioslave got together and toured playing songs from both catalogs with Zach de la Rocha on vocals* -- if he'd want to do such a project.(*given that Audioslave was essentially Rage Against The Machine minus Zach with Cornell in his place -- although the lyrical content wasn't as overtly-political in terms of subject-matter)
Well put. Chris Cornell was an amazingly talented individual. He would have been successful regardless of his accompanying musicians. Just look at the material he put together literally overnight for the Singles soundtrack; "Seasons" is one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written. No, replacing Chris Cornell just is not possible.
I agree. And in a book i have, Kim says, Chris was only 19 when we formed Soundgarden. Chris had to get authorized permission before we were to play a show inside some Seattle bars.
Breaks my heart💔.
Thats why I've had to take a long break from finishing these books. The stuff they all were talking about, holds even more weight now😔.
I had the amazing privilege of knowing Chris for a few years and I'm still destroyed by his death, so I can't even imagine the agony Kim still feels. I'm so relieved that Kim won't pull a Jerry Cantrell and attempt to replace the face, heart and soul of the band. Cantrell can fuck right off. But that's a whole 'nother story...
Kim crushed that beer. hahaha :)
Way back when MTV played music videos, Soundgarden won an award and Kim walked up with a partial 6 pack ring of beer and had one in hand. His comment when accepting the award was to not let Kirk Hammet of Metalica shave his face anymore. That is Kim.
@@baneleaf7025 very cool haha. Love those guys...frowngarden my ass!
@Brad Ketchen nice! Thoughts of being in a beer garden - with Soundgarden (All band members).

2 things. It's clear that Kim is still dealing with losing Chris. He seems a little guarded when talking about him. There also seems to be a little bit of underlying anger at the situation the band finds themselves in with regards to their control of their own future. Alot is said here by Kim without actually saying it.
Anthony Fairall I agree
I'm not so sure either of those things were all that clear? Are you sure you're not imposing your own feelings on the situation?
He obviously has to deal with the loss of a friend, I agree. Just disagree that he seemed guarded or angry about anything.

If I were in possession of Soundgardens catalogue , and I knew how much their music meant to Chris ..Id have to turn the music over to the remaining members and honor Chris Cornells legacy, his memory ,his life ..his love of music..these guys were like brothers .how could one prosper by holding on to their music? Who benefits from this ? Chris would want the music to be dealt with amicably..fairly , with love..LOUD LOVE !! ..☮💔💞💲☚🤔💥😔💔
We love you Kim. Thanks for everything!
I cried when Chris died
Same 💔
You can see just how emotional he is talking about his friend....fighting back tears. If we do get to hear those songs someday, that's great. But I am immensely grateful for the big Soundgarden catalog that we do have.
Kim has one of the biggest hearts ever in rock and is a criminally underappreciated guitarist and musician. As far as comparing AiC to Soundgarden in terms of working after losing Layne/Chris, is Jerry was a prominent part of the vocal sound. Jerry also was the prominent song writer in AiC and Chris was the primary writer in Soundgarden. So, there is a different dynamics is involved as well. Jerry also waited a good long while before reforming AiC.
Lots and lots of love to Kim, Ben, Matt and Chris' family
Thank you
It's hard to process all of this
Dont forget hiro the founder of SG
Kim was very classy here. He's a great man.
Justice for Chris. #westandwithsoundgarden
To me, it still feels like an alternate universe or something where I'm being lied to that he's gone. It still doesn't feel real, Lemmy, Bowie, Cornell, Weiland, Bennington etc.. life is so fragile hold those you love close.
Bowie at least hung around long enough to start getting old.
@@DrJReefer And Lemmy was older than. Bowie when he died.
I fucking whole heartedly agree. Just yesterday I remember him belting out LOUD LOVE and full on Kevin's mom at the Moore theater.
Lemmy? Come on that guy was pushing his luck everyday! Ha.
Kim is a riff master! The main riff to A Thousand Years Wide is SICK!!! The weird trippy noise behind the verse riff is killer and takes you for a ride!!
As everyone is saying...Kim is really savvy and diplomatic. Would love to hear what they put together from the sessions and demos, given the right amount of time etc. Hope the audio-files are released to them to work on the projects, but only because (and I expect this of these band members and TRUE ARTISTS) of the excitement of the art and the desire to share...not for the money or to milk the name and reputation of the band for anything. Soundgarden is one of the best bands of the last 40 years easily.
Very strongly agree!
In a lonely empty parking lot somewhere in Austin Texas at 03:00 AM five nights a week you can hear the sound of Chris Cornell's music playing quietly. It echos through the empty lot confirming that while the man is gone the music lasts forever. - Six

I feel for any true rock fan that missed this band live. The greatest show of my life, 2014 Hollywood Bowl, followed closely by Tool, Staples Center 2006.
I feel bad for him... Trying to hold back the tears as much as he can.
All those years and finally, SG made it back. I can't deal with the fact there is SG no more.
He’s a good man. And way to conduct another great interview Eddie.
He seems fine. I didn't see him fighting back any tears?
Kim Thayil knows, along with the surviving band that, deep down, Soundgarden will NEVER be the same band with Chris.
You mean "without"...but that's obvious...we all know it.
Not just deep down, he literally said it in the interview.
He's being very selective in what he says here, which makes him such a class act. I hope Chris's estate could release audio files so that the rest of the band can release a final album. I really hope that can happen. Chris's work should not be locked away in a basement gathering dust. The best way to honour his memory and legacy is by celebrating his work and try artistry. Just let the music play.

Kim seems like a great dude. It's obvious he misses Chris, as we all do. I hope those controlling Chris' estate release that audio.
Kim - I hope you guys decide to celebrate, and honor the legacy of Mr. Cornell. Yes, it wouldn't be "Soundgarden" without him, everyone understands and respects that. Call the resurgence ND or anything you want, but it's not disrespectful to get up on stage again to play and perform the songs we all love. Sure, it would take an exceptional addition to honor Chris's legacy in the most respectful and dignified way... Thankfully I know someone that would handle that part just fine.

Francisco Gares so why does
Vicky has files wouldn’t band or Kim have it if sg
This is how you do it proper. Well done Kim.
Love Kim. Major obstacle with the files is getting them from Vicky and her mother, who judging by previous form, will incorectly see more value in releasing them as a Chris Cornell solo album, probably produced by Pharell or Will.I.am or someone "current" and "A-list". Also knowing them, they will be very much enjoying the feeling of power from holding onto those files. This has been slighlty exasperated by Kim calling the tribute concert out for what it was. I'm hopeful, but expecting absolutely nothing.

This guy is all class and I wish them the best. It’s still too soon, but don’t bet that there isn’t a singer that could bring it for these guys. It could, and I really hope it does happen...
First time I saw Soundgarden was in 1989 or 90..they opened for Danzig at Center Stage in Atlanta..awesome show.

Absolutely bring us a new record! Any more of Chris we can get the better, and the rest of the guys of course!
Yeah, holy shit! I didn't think they had enough of Chris's vocals recorded to do a last Soundgarden album. I remember Matt saying something like the album was gonna have a harder sound than King Animal. One of these days I'd like to see/hear Kim play, if not with Matt and Ben too. Soundgarden is my favorite band, bit I never saw them play. I saw Audioslave, Chris with touring band and acoustic.

I would love Thayil to do a solo career of just riffs, I love his guitar style.
Kim is the man!
thanks for this!
Still can't believe both Chris and Chester are gone
My gateway into Soundgarden was "Louder Than Love" when I saw a video for one of the singles* on either or both Headbangers Ball or 120 Minutes (back in the days when M-TV couldn't figure out which genre the Seattle bands belonged in; so, they aired their videos on both niche programs). It'd be so nice if they could get around to releasing a reissue of that milestone record (even if the timing is off relative to its 30th anniversary) as I would gobble that thing up on the day that it comes out!! I so hope that Kim and the other guys can get all the legalities straightened-out in order to make that a reality!!
I still have my cassettes. Don't have anything to play them on, but I still got them.
Kim is trying his hardest here NOT to name Vicky Cornell or put Chris's family in harms way. It's the opposite of what Vicky is accusing him of in the lawsuit where she is referring to this actual interview. And the other allegations she wrote down in the lawsuit against Matt, Kim and Ben are just laughable lies and she knows it. i really didnt wanna join the vicky cornell hate movement but it's hard when she pulls this kind of bullshit. Hope the Soundgarden boys win the case and we get to hear one last PROPER and GENUINE Soundgarden album. Loud Love!
I didn’t either but she was the Murderer of Blue Skies.

Soundgarden was before my time, but I'm so glad I discovered them. Chris Cornell's voice is so powerful, accurate, and resonating. I agree with Kim, AIC continuing without Layne Staley is a truly impressive feat, and I'm hoping that they do eventually continue. However, they are human beings, and they are going to do whatever gives them the most closure and I respect that.
His mom was my great grandmother’s good friend. I knew her a bit when I was younger, but I was so young that she was just another adult.

Yes yes yes!! A new album. Awesome
"We don't have access to the audio files". .code for Chris Cornell's wife has them and wants to "make a deal"...
It may also be in record producers possession. They may want a 'new deal' because of pre -contractual obligations.
Or record producers have the files and cannot legally give em to SG until Chris' estate approves first.
Whoever better hand em over!
@@ccsg1313 don't be a dumb ass Ashley! We all know that VK has those files and she's a greedy twat who only gives a fuck about money. She wants a new deal, clearly...
@@jefesmama how bout you not being a dumb ass by calling me one. Assmunch.
Im not taking up for anyone thats for damn sure. As I've stated in many comments...either widow or record producers have the master files. If you'd listen to Kim in this interview he does hint towards the record producers.
You don't seem to understand that the band still has a contractual obligation to fill with the record producer. They are most likely working a "new deal" to make sure the band fills prior contract. Then the whole damn thing is complicated by widow (estate of Chris) wanting her share, so record producers have their hands tied legally.
Then again maybe widow has em and gonna sit on him so her kids can sing em on Chris' 15th death Anniversary!!
So settle down.
TO HOTLANTA35: Sounds logical. Since he was recording the demos at home. In his studio. I wouldn't doubt st widow's in possession of them. For St Widow (estate)"streaming of Chris's share of his catalog is the only thing of value. After giving Susan half in divorce"

I would love to see any representation of Soundgarden's music live. That being said, I don't think there's anyone out there that could fill the void Chris left. In my opinion the coolest thing they could do would be to find a vocalist and tour under a different name like Superunknown or something similar. That way they could do the Soundgarden thing without being constantly compared to the Chris era.
Too soon.
I'd love to hear the new album, even if they never do another record together. Honestly, without Chris they can't carry on. Chris not only contributed to vocals and lyrics but guitar riffs as well as he was a talented rythm guitarist. If you look at the song credits, most of Soundgarden's best tracks had guitars written by Chris.

Looking at other bands that have continued to make music after losing their frontman, I hope that Soundgarden won't go the same route. I've always loved Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Soundgarden and I always will. Alice in Chains is making new music with a slightly harder tone when it comes to the arrangements and lyrics. It's ok but it's just not the same. Stone Temple Pilots have found a guy (Jeff Gutt?) that sounds exactly like Scott Weiland and they've released maybe one new song. Yeah, it sounds like STP but we all know that that's not Scott singing. In this fan's humble opinion, Soundgarden should release what was recorded before Chris' death, after it's fine tuned in the studio, let Soundgarden stay SOUNDGARDEN, and be done with the name . And whoever has the recordings of the vocals needs to grow a conscience and hand them over to the guys. Just so they can have the closest thing to closure that this might bring them, as well as the fans, and Chris' kids.
STP put out a full album with Gutt and have another on the way, fyi. I enjoyed the album a lot.
The only way it would work is finding someone that sounds like
Chris I highly doubt finding a voice like Chris’s just release the music
@@heyghost7223 All that I've heard is that the Deleos were planning to re-record their old albums with Gutt as vocalist, which took me aback but I can't speak to how true that is. I'm glad they still make albums that fans can enjoy. Meadow was catchy. I still like Alice in Chains but I appreciate them more for not finding a Layne Staley imitation. William Duvall has his own voice and style which isn't to everyone's liking. To me, that is more honorable than what STP seemed to be doing with Gutt when the Meadow single dropped.
@@jewelstherockstar5767 it's not out of the realm of possibility but for me, it just wouldn't be the same. I loved all of Chris' solo stuff (only a couple catchy songs from Scream though), Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave's first album so I don't know that lyrically it would be as good or even worth it.
Chris was irreplaceable because he was an actual composer, arranger, and multi instrumentalist. Scott and Layne were great singers in that they had very strong, distinct rock n roll voices, but all they really were were singers
