In this video I take you through some fundamentals of custom motorcycle wiring with a focus on power distribution, grounding, charging, wire type, wire gauge, components and their operation in a deeper dive on the subject. This will be part of a multi-video series on the subject of motorcycle wiring so stay tuned!
    This subject can be confusing and many times frustrating when searching for various information that a lot of times has to come from many different sources. The goal here is to eliminate some of the mystery that comes along with it and help clarify common questions with the logic behind it.

    I really appreciate this stuff, man! I'm rewiring my first bike right now and it can be overwhelming. No computers, just signals, lights, and points ignition - still difficult stuff to get right.
    I would just add that breaking this stuff down into small pieces and working methodically is CRITICAL. I'm using my stock wiring diagram as a guide and I've found it helpful to sit down with a box of markers and color up and trace each wire in each subsystem slowly. Maybe my brain is less capable of grokking this kind of stuff, but it takes WORK to sort this stuff out the first time no matter who you are! It can be so easy to lose the plot and want to give up, but a journey of 1,000 miles starts with a single step and each step gets a little easier as you travel down the road. Complexity is normally just a ton of simple things piled up on top of each other.

      You are definitely taking the right steps though. Its always a great idea to label and break things down to smaller pieces. Its easy to get overwhelmed so anything to avoid that is the best

    ~17:20 - Small guage wire capability. The Morty acts like a relaying, which just needs a trigger wire to activate the circuit.
    An example that more folks may understand is when hooking up aftermarket lights on a vehicle. A relay is used to send power directly from the battery to the light (high current/wattage). The switch to turn on the lights is simply providing a trigger to activate the ground path within the relay, to which the relays internal connection, from battery to lights, is latched. Thus creating a closed circuit to turn on the lights.
    This methodology enhances safety by keeping high current out of the users' reach, reduces wire guage requirements going to the switch, and reduces heat through wire looms (heat = wasted power (wattage)). Effectively allowing the charging system to work more efficiently and effectively.
    This is all good stuff and really allows the builder to run wild with their imagination when it comes to adding electrical features to a build.

      It's definitely far more complex than a relay but yes the idea is there for the difference in trigger vs output wire sizes.

    Ha, you’re one of very few people I know who could spell out MOSFET. It may be boring to some people but as a former EE major, I appreciate the details.

    I know absolutely nothing about motorcycles and have never even driven one but hey, I’ve been watching Mustie1 for years. :)

    Looking forward to part 2. I got same Rae San unit. Can you show how to hook up the killswitch relay that came with the Rae San unit if you got one from him? It has 1 red wire and 3 white wires.

      Im actually working on the rae san as I type this. I did not get the relay though but see the diagram for it within the installation manual.

    Great informative video, subscribed already 👍. Tell me one thing, do you not completely cover the hot battery connectors? I never like mine exposed just in case something touches on them.

      Thank you. I actually don't cover them. Everything is so tightly held in place I wouldn't know how anything could touch them but I understand some things are just out of my control.

    Been looking forward to this vid for a long time. I‘m now at the wiring stage of mx cx 500. Might try the nwt unit instead of the alternative. Does it work with the oem switches? Got the t-shirt last week. Fast shipping!

      Yes you could make it work with oem switch housings by wiring them as needed. Compatible with both momentary buttons or factory style latching type!

    Dude, that nuut thing. They should sponsor you because I'm BUYING ONE now because of YOU. I've been tossing around the idea of just building one (easily) with an Arduino system but this requires external relays/fuses. The M-Unit has been on my radar but way too freaking expensive for what it is (and Arduino is $10~). But piecing together my own build, finding a good case for it, etc-- it's SO worth the price Nuut is asking. Thank you so much.

    Fantastic job with the wiring! I will say I am not a fan of the controller units. One of the things I like about older bikes is they are very simple. You can accomplish everything you need electrically with solenoids, fuses, switches, and relays. In my opinion you can make the wiring system very simple and I enjoy that aspect when I set up my electrical system on builds. That being said, you can do some very cool things with controllers, and it makes it much easier to set the electrical system up for people that have a hard time dissecting how each electrical component works and how they work with each other. It is a very good way to start understanding how the electrical system works. Thanks for the great video and resources.

      On the counter, a control unit allows for momentary switches where a fuse can't. This let's the harness become much more slim and keeps power from running through the bars where old switches fail. Lots of benefits but yes, not needed for every bike

      @@BrickHouseBuilds I see what you mean. You just need to send a signal with very little power running through it instead of power running through a relay. That is how Harleys are now built. I worked at a shop where we did many handlebar changes on Harleys and because of the ride by wire control you could easily pack all of the thin wires through the handlebars. I guess I must keep my handlebar controls very simple because it hasn't been a problem with me yet. Thanks for the quick response, I have learned many new things from your videos.

      @@BrickHouseBuilds There are also specialty relays that allow for the use of momentary switches, I use them all the time for Hi/Lo headlight switches.

      4 relays without wiring take up more space than the X21 controller I sell. Then you have to have room for fuses. These require less wire too.

      ​@@BrickHouseBuilds I like keeping all of the parts off the shelf and simple. The more analog the better. I don't find it very difficult to hide a fuse box and some relays, and running thicker wires where needed is no issue (small wires have plenty of issues of their own). I'll even design the build to fit an AGM style battery because I favor them over Lithium ion batteries, even though they are far less compact and easy to work with. That being said, I do not have much ground to stand on however, because I would be lying if I said my builds looked better than the ones I have seen on your channel. I imagine like me you have been pulling in every useful technique you have found, and your channel has given me many great techniques to use that were previously unknown to me. Thanks again for the responses, it is rare to have the owner of the channel be personally responding, and I appreciate that.

      You can but thats larger than it needs to be most of the time. No downside to 8g other than just size

    Hi and I always watch your great onest easy to understand videos. I can wire houses but not motorcycles. I've got a 1982 susuzi 650 g s. I have spark it will barely run but it only runs on 2 cylinders. The two in the center stay cold . New plugs. Iam not sure even if the coil wires are going to correct cylinders. I've cleaned the 4 carb out two times.. I guess what I badly would like to know is how the 4 hoses coming from carbs where and how they are attached plus plug wires.
    Question does both coils can they go yo eighther side or is there a left and a right side coil. Cause I put some older ones on when I seen the two cylinders in the center not firing even tho they all 4 have good spark. Please help me in my minor delicate. It's right your alley and thanks up front a million times from this old young at heart 80 yr old biker from the 50s

      Your issue with thr 650 can be frustrating for sure. While I cant tell you an answer to whats wrong as I cant be there to look at the bike I can help you with the thought process. You need to see a problem and then be able to understand how the specific components should operate and what would cause them to not.
      You need to buy a service manual and a digital multimeter for any motorcycle or vehicle to be able to test things when you have a problem. It will show hose routing, ignition wiring, engine specifications and more. They are a MUST HAVE.
      On your bike you need 3 things: fuel, air, and spark to make it run. See which ones you don't have and work backwards as to why not. DO NOT go and buy a bunch of parts until you understand your issue. That wastes money and time which causes you to get frustrated with your project and often give up. I buy a ton of bikes that have been given up on for simple issues.

      @@BrickHouseBuilds o have good spark, fuel air to center plug stay cold but the have good spark. If the voila wires be crossed some way and that would not let two cylinders not burn and still have good spark. I have the original manual and volt meter the firing order is 1243 and my coils say the right one going rht to left it says put 3 wire then going left the next plug wire is 4 then 2 then on no one is one.     Im still in the learning phase here.... But do you really need the MP280 Fuse Box if you are running a M.Unit Blue. I thought those had built in reset-able fuses.

      Hey Kirk, I used that fuse block for some other things not related to the main wiring. I am using a Morty system on this bike not a motogadget. I sell the NWT products which is now the X21 line with those auto resetting fuses you mention. Again the fuse block was for some extra stuff and a bit overkill but I like trying new things.

    Would you help;
    I have Kawasaki kz750 twin building from scratch (bobber) my regular have 2 yellow wires one black one white and red and brown …
    Yellows need to connect to stator,
    Black is negative -
    White/red it positive +
    And brown I have not a clue… on diagram looks like is connected to brake light switch 🤷🏻‍♂️. Would you help please?
