  • Larry Bird is basketball royalty The Greatest Clutch Player ever and one of the top 5 players of all time..The Baddest man to Ever Shoot a Basketball, as a teenager i grew up in the inner city of NY where basketball was the sport of choice and i remember seeing that 91' playoff game against The "Rifleman" Chuck Person and the Pacers when Bird was at the end of his playing days and his back was almost done and when he came back from the locker room after being hurt and started torching the Pacers in crunch time for the win, i will never forget that game that solidified his Legend to say that was a clutch performance is an understatement!

  • @ngcolby
    @ngcolby Před 4 lety +3

    Larry is in your best starting 5 of all time for two reasons. One, he was an absolute stone cold killer. Jordan is the only other person in that conversation and it's not even that close. When it's all on the line, there isn't anyone else in basketball history who you would want the ball being in their hands instead of Larry. Two, Larry had an indomitable will to win no matter the cost to himself. Jordan and Magic are the only other players in that conversation, but both fall short of Larry. The more that was on the line, the better Larry got, and there was no limit.
    It's the things that you can't teach, that make the man, that fuel all the points, generate the assists, make the rebounds pile up. Larry got shafted in the physical gifts, but more than made up for it with all of his mental gifts. Larry owns the small forward position, and there isn't anyone close to removing him from that top 5 all time team yet.
    Magic, Jordan, Bird, Lebron, Kareem. Those 5 together are untouchable by any other team you could possibly put together. Magic can play all 5 positions and had the best court vision of anyone to play the game. Jordan was the real human highlight reel, and a very, very good defender. Bird, the stone cold killer, eats you up mentally on both ends of the floor. Lebron, a freak of nature, can score from anywhere, on pretty much anyone. Kareem, stout defender in the middle, sky hooks you all day long.

    Most impressive play on this whole video was the pass from Bird to Lewis at 33:24. To have that sort of presence of mind, court awareness, & passing accuracy after suffering a concussion is just ... it's impossible. And, add that to the fact that Bird was going to the hospital & being put in traction after each game. It defies explanation.

    • @nathanrobinson3653
      @nathanrobinson3653 Před rokem

      Absolutely--too bad so many Jordan fans have 80s amnesia--Bird schooled everyone and dominated the Bulls in particular. I doubt we will ever see a player that good--he could do it all and then would do stuff I didn't know was possible or existed. His vision, unselfishness, skill, toughness, competitiveness, and legend will probably never be surpassed. He was the best at his sport and dominated it in a way that no one has ever dominated in any sport--not Ali, not Pele, not even Tiger or Brady--Bird is just head and shoulders above his contemporaries--his game looked different than everyones and he embarrassed many pro players. I am glad CZcams has immortalized his play for those who weren't fortunate to be alive then to see him. We are fortunate to have the memories we have and to have got to see the greatest ever. Put Magic, Duncan, Jokic, and Doncic with Bird and there is the all-time team comprised of team players--Jordan would only take away from an all-time team--Bird would have it clicking on all cylinders--ah-preaching to the choir.. What a dream to see a group like that--they would surprise some people. Bring Maravich, Nash, Russell, and Donovan Mitchell off the bench. Had a guy say, but Bird had a better team than Jordan--yeah, because Bird was on it. I think Bird could have won in 88 with Pippen and a coach and great defenders and 3-point shooters--probably wouldn't have got swept by the Pistons like Jordan did. Bird's game was so far beyond Jordan's it seems embarrassing to compare them. Jordan couldn't shoot like Bird, or rebound, or pass like Bird, couldn't make guys around him better like Bird, and frankly, couldn't beat Bird.

    What's amazing about Bird is his will to win. Larry wasn't fast, couldn't jump and was somewhat slow. He won because of sheer determination, hard work and intellect. The WILL to win and the determination to do what was necessary to meet his objective. He became a Legend in basketball.

      Lebron would punish Bird! Lebron is quicker, faster in the open court, stronger, and capable of jumping higher. Bird is one of the most over-rated players in the history of the NBA. He couldn’t jump, he “led” his talented Celtics team to only two titles, and he pales in comparison to the Celtic’s Bill Russell - who led the Celtics to 11 championships. Larry’s teams won only two. You tried, Larry.

But seeing them go head to head against each other in epic court battles then play together so well on the Olympic Dream Team with no animosity toward each other and end up as friends I have to say both were two of the top five goats of all time, and I know theres other greats one could argue but how can one not put magic and bird in the top five of all time. Also lets not forget many of Larrys greatest moments were played when he was hurt and in pain, now thats what I call a helluva legend and a hell of a man.

    I will be a 61 year old black man in September so I have seen a few great players. I played, coached and watched ball until it wasn't wise to play no more. Regardless of color, something many like to talk about, Larry Bird was the baddest man on the planet in his prime and one of the top 5 greatest of all time in my opinion. He was a complete player, leader and winner period. The one thing I admired the most was he didn't fall into the country wanting, begging him to be labeled the "great white hope". I don't think this man coming from a small Indiana town had a prejudice bone in his body. He could have taken more credit for Boston's success but always spoke about his team. Young players needs use their phone to look him up and learn what a great player is all about. Not just being able to shoot and entertain.

He challenged other players to play their best and if they did he returned total respect then turned up the heat. This is why the battles between him and Magic were so monumental. I'm from LA, so I've been a Lakers fan for years and Magic was the man here, but I respected Larry because he was amazing in his own right. He played every game hard and was the best 3 point shooter I've ever seen. And as you said, this is the 80's..a more physical game where you could get away with cheap shots to your opponent. It really was a special time for basketball and I respected Larry a lot...up until he played against Magic and the rest of Showtime. Then he was an enemy til the season was over or they were knocked out of the playoffs.

    Bird was such a great player and there were so many games where his performance had to be seen to be believed. The famous game 7 shoot-out with Dominique, and game 7 vs Bernard King in 84 Bird had 43 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. How about the "heat game" #5 of 84 finals where Bird shot 15 of 20 from the field for 34 points and 17 rebounds ! And game 4 he had 29 points and 21 rebounds and hit the game-winner in OT.His game 6 of the 86 Finals was a true masterpiece with 29 points and 11 rebounds and 12 assists. In the 81 finals game 6 he had 27 points 13 rebounds 5 assists and was huge in the 4th quarter. Other games were the 60 point game where the other team were exchanging high 5's at his shooting. How about his near quadruple double vs San Antonio in 85 where he sat out the entire 4th qtr with 30 pts, 12 reb., 10 ast and 9 steals. Or the "left- handed" game vs Portland with 47-14-11 and the game tying and game winning shots. And the game he put on a show for Magic watching in LA in 81 with 36-21-5 and 5 steals and 5 blocks! And the 91 vs Portland 49-14-12 double OT thriller. Truly a legend.

The stuff Larry and Magic were doing on that court was OUTRAGEOUS. The only dude that had vision on par with these dudes in recent history was Jason Kidd on the Nets. Freaking magicians all of them.

      @@Getloose360 Lebron's a slightly better passer than Bird I think. But, I don't think people understand how good Bird was. Imagine a 50/40/90 forward who was the is Top 2 non-PG passer ever, could play tough and skilled at the same time, and who had the best head game we've ever seen. That's like today's dream player. And Bird was playing that way at some no-name university back in the 70s. Dude was so far ahead of his time it was ridiculous. He invented proto-modern basketball and it took until long after he was retired for it to be re-discovered. Yeah, Lebron has never had to face someone like Bird. But then Bird was never put against anyone like James. That would probably be the best match-up I can think of in basketball.

Bird was a magician with the ball in his hands throwing passes where we as fans could not believe what we just saw......Lebron while very good is a more utilitarian passer, and his career assists pay homage to his longevity not necessarily him having the gifted court vision that Bird or Magic had. I am old enough to have watched both players through their complete careers so far and my eyes tell me Lebrons passing is a notch below Birds.Now Bird was clearly and easily the better shooter in every capacity, but much respect to LBJ hes one of the greats.

    GREAT VID!!! Not sure how old you are but it seems you are much younger than me. If that is the case it is very refreshing when I find younger people who are knowledgeable but NBA basketball! In 1991 when Bird dove for the ball and had to leave the game, that is when you realized he was a legend. I watched Larry (and was a fan since the final 4 in 1979) for his entire career. I was blessed to have a Satellite dish back then and watched just about every game even though I was form Wisconsin. Bird and Magic were truly the golden era of the NBA. Jordan was global and Lebron is a media favorite and one of the biggest brands ever but the game was never more dramatic, well played, and competitive than it was during the 80's. It was top heavy but even if fans home teams lost the would root for either LA & Boston every time they met and it was something that divided the nation and even other countries. I don't mean that in a bad way, it was about competition and entertainment. Kind of.like either rooting for Rafa or Roger but still respecting both of them because of their greatness and all-time legendary play in the biggest moments!
    Magic said it best back in 1984 (watched live)...
    "everyone was talking...Bird vs Magic, Magic vs Bird." "It was so intense, so intense!"

    The interesting thing is that I believe Bird would be as great a player now, even with all the crazy athletes in the NBA, as he was then, because he didn't try to out run you and dunk on you, he just ALWAYS out-smarted you. MJ on the other hand would still be great, but not as great because much of his success was based on the fact that he was usually the best athlete on the court, plain and simple.

Bird made the best shot-block I ever saw. Bird played through the most pain I ever saw. Bird talked the most trash, backed it up, and did it in-play, against HOFs, I ever saw. Bird beat Jordan more than anyone else, I ever saw. Bird dominated everyone, he ever saw. Bird had the best team, I ever saw, because he was on it, and they were gonna play total team basketball, unselfish and fundamentally sound, the right way. Bird got into your head through his play and his words--not dirty play, not slashing with fingernails, not running up under a shooter's ankles, not getting bailed out with a call, not poking you in the eye or touching your face, not pushing off and grabbin' shirts, but if you pressed him, you were gonna have to fight, you were gonna wake the beast, lose the game, and learn a lesson if you were smart. Just ask Dr.J (you tried to choke Bird and got humiliatingly shut down, destroyed by Bird's dominating clinic, and lost big), Michael Jordan (you scratched and slashed with your nails and made Bird bleed like he had fought a tiger and you came over to double and block Bird's game winning buzzer-beater and he SHOT IT IN YOUR FACE and you got beat--0-6 against Larry in the playoffs), Scottie Pippen (you slashed like Jordan, like a tiger, made Bird bleed, and while Michael came over to double and help you and swung through nothing but air to block it, you both got it IN YOUR FACES with the game-winning buzzer-beater, and lost), Bill Laimbeer and the rest of the BadBoys (you all fouled Bird in just about every dirty way possible and only fired him up more and both Bird and Parish layed Laimbeer out and the Pistons lost), James Worthy (sorry, Worthy, I have mad respect for you but you did try and hold Bird and grab jersey a lot and Bird got away, ran to the corner where he told you he was gonna go, received the ball, and hit the playoff game-winner, in your face), Chuck Person (you kneed Bird in his broken back during the playoffs and dropped him to the floor--I thought he might be paralyzed and unable to continue at first, but he got up, dusted himself off, and proceeded to bury shots in people's faces and make unbelieveable passes for easy buckets to everyone and you got beat.)
