He spent more time on the floor going after lose balls than any other player I can remember. Shortly afterwards, NBA draft eligibility rules were changed to prevent teams from drafting players before they were ready to sign, a rule known as the Bird Collegiate Rule.
As we watch the tape, when you are near ground floor and watching the actual game you see so more the small things in the game, some his passing was nearly unbelievable and his places on the court. When you play the game you really understand the difficulty, Bird played street ball earlier.
Let's not forget…. at age 30, BIRD was a 90 % marksman from the free throw line. Why is this incredibly important stat (particularly @ the end of the game) often overlooked? This is a time when your best player has the ball, or should. Bird WILL make his free throws, and the fact is, he actually cherished it.
I'd like to be younger, but I'm very glad to have grown up in Boston, in the 80's and be a part of Larry Bird's rise to legendary status. Thank you for being honest. I’m 60 and grew up watching Larry & Magic battle it out! I don’t understand how todays players can underestimate him! The game was MORE PHYSICAL back then & he was 6ft 10! Always came through with unbelievable passes & OWNED the 3 pt clutch & free throws. Talking trash the whole game. 😂 Larry the Legend! Won me lots of $ ❤❤❤
I’m from Boston. I got to experience the Larry Bird and Magic Johnson era. I watch these videos and read the comments of people comparing Bird to kids that are playing now. Also we didn’t talk about who was the GOAT. During the Larry Bird years we didn’t care about any of that nonsense. Speaking for myself I liked a lot of players during the 1970’s and 1980’s. The 1980’s was great basketball. It was so great I haven’t been able to watch basketball since. For me the game died when the legends retired. The type of basketball being played today isn’t the same or comparable. It does not provide the wars that 1980’s basketball had. It doesn’t provide the edge of your seat heart pumping thrill ride that the 1980’s basketball had. It sucks that it couldn’t have lasted forever. I wish everyone could have experienced it. It was awesome and I miss it.
I grew up in this era. The NBA was going under. It was Larry and Magic that saved the NBA. The finals were being played on delay. Late at night after people went to bed. They took the NBA from midnight to prime time. From almost bankrupt to a world wide phenomenon.
Dominique was awesome on the court and he is an excellent gentleman. That 4th quarter shootout between Dominique and Bird is spectacular. They respect each other. What a talented Battle that was....................
Thank You, BU. I had to watch this 2 times. So much to absorb. The Birdman was a demon to my Lakers and later to the Sonics. West Coast fan back then. Times change, and seeing what the Birdman did, is amazing. Thanks again.
One thing about these Bird videos is that it isn't Joe Blow or Fred Journeyman talking about how good he was. These are greats and hall of famers themselves. These are professionals who played with or against him. Magic, Kareem, Michael Cooper, Byron Scott, James Worthy, Dominique, Isaiah Thomas, Salley, Irvin, Barkley, Ewing - the list has no end. If these guys said you deserved to be on the court with them, you are already great. When they admit fearing you? Damn.
Hi BU... I live in Boston and am a HUGE fan of Tom Brady. However, I completely agree with you. The rivalry between Peyton and Tommy is no where near the intensity or depth of the rivalry between Magic and Larry. Furthermore, although Tom and Peyton are friends, they are not the same kind of friends as Larry and Magic. Larry and Magic have a special bond that is very rare.
Good work bud. It is good to see people with basketball smarts bring back things I hadn't thought about in a while. The game just doesn't interest me anymore so thanks for the memories and the recognition of a talented player - the GOAT.
I was so lucky to grow up in that era. Lakers vs Celtics. INSANE! All of LA was electric when the Celtics came to town once a year. My God! When the Lakers had that showtime fast break going, OMG!!! This complete joke that the NBA is today is absolutely unwatchable. Who cares anymore! Larry Bird was a G.O.A.T.
I was watching the NCAA championships this year and Magic and Larry both stood up for the young players. Both of them are still trying to save the NCAA and NBA. That really touched me. I honestly thought Larry would get sarcastic about the new people but he champions them.
I know the game has changed but man I miss this the trash talking & physicality in the 80' & 90'. The match-ups were also amazing. I do enjoy 3 point shooting it todays game, but back in the day was used more as a strategic weapon but I have no doubt if Larry was playing today he would be up with the best in terms of 3 point shooting numbers. The guy would be on the practice court all day & night lol I do miss the mix of more driving to the post, slam dunking over players, sky hooks etc Think the talent is around in todays game to mix it up more. Love the reaction videos. Much appreciated😊✊
@@BU_TV Hell, Larry with today's medical technology would've gotten proper treatment for his spinal injury humping concrete around at his mom's house in the offseason and his career would've been a lot longer. Not to mention nutrition, workout regimen, etc.
When Irving, Magic, Jordon and a bunch of other of the best ever say Larry is the best or in the top 5 ever, you need to listen. I watched Larry play and it’s hard to explain how ridiculously great he was. He should be in everyone’s top 5 all time greats. He makes it on Mount Rushmore every time.
Thank you for reacting to this one. I have seen a lot of this footage but not all of it and there was some fun stuff. Love your reaction too! I agree with you on Bird’s passing. My goodness, that man could pass!😄
I could not agree more with you on Bird. Great vid man. The young ones NEED to start watching Larry tape, I think their opinions would change very quickly.
If the younger generation doesn't believe he was that good that means you pretty much depreciate one of the greatest eras on basketball history. Because the list of H.O.Fers.that he beat and not only beat but bested is pretty damn impressive so you can't call Dr.J , Dominique , Isaiah, Hakeem, Magic , B. King, MJ , worthy , Kareem ,Moses ,A.Dantley ,M.Aguirre,etc. Great if Bird wasn't Great. He beat them all and got bested most of them . Can't have it both ways. And common sense and history tells you that list players weren't just great. They were legendary HOF. That ends that discussion if they decide to watch or not ,facts are facts and all those guys will attest to his greatness. They have no choice because to say otherwise diminishes their career. When you win like he did its impossible to revise history you can only remain ignorant and clueless. Oh crap forgot Sir Charles on that list he was pretty good too and Ewing , Mullin,Clyde the Glide,Malone and Stockton ...yeah sure ..Bird overrated...get real ask those guys
This is a nice piece of work. Im 65 from boston .not only did magic and larry bring basketball back they also Punched threw the Racial Divide💪💪 true friendship is hard to find. Thanks for this vidieo 👍👍
I agree, Bird wouldn't have to adjust to the size of today's players. When Larry played, every team had a legit 7 foot center. Kareem, Hakeem, Ewing. Ralph Sampson was 7 foot 4 for pete's sake.
@@kool4209 Larry could shoot with either hand, today Larry would have grown up with the 3 point line. He wouldn't need to upgrade anything. There isn't a player in today's league that can jump higher than Jordan.
@@kool4209 Larry was shooting over... Ralph Sampson Kareem Olajuwan Moses Malone Patrick Ewing Bill Laimbeer And over super athletes like.. Dominique MJ Dr. J Charles Bernard King George Gervin Etc... Yeah...I think Larry would be just fine. His opponents might need a quiet corner to cry in, though 😂
Watch his regular games...pick one or two and youll see more than these highlight reels. Every damn game he played seemed epic. So many more games that showcased his talent
Bird turned 30 on December 7, 1986. Many videos highlight that Bird worked on a garbage truck. Perhaps city folks can't understand what it is to work for the street department in a small community. That street department did pick up garbage as part of its routine but what it really did is maintain the public spaces in the community. It did things like fix damaged or worn signs or paint park benches and cut grass in public spaces. Bird has said that he enjoyed the work. He liked that he was in a position to do something about that bent or scruffy looking item on the street. Maintaining and beautifying one's community is a noble occupation too. I like how Bird didn't look down his nose at honest hard work or the people who do it.
I am not from Boston , but was able to watch live Celtic games when the legend was playing i will say none of the games were boring unlike todays games over priced and over hyped . The unselfish play the killer instinct was on full display Bird hands down top three of all time.
Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, and was what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!
My future wife insisted i had to come to the first basketball game of the 1976 season to watch her perform on the court. It was Larry Bird's first college game and he was simply the most exciting player i had ever seen. I got to watch him for FREE on my student ID for the next two years!
Reggie had a big point: today's rules, with the turnstile defenses - he'd be open for shots, and passing lanes would be wide open. No disrespect to LeBron, who's performance over time is incredible. Your point about James being ball dominant is also spot on.
Best player in history praise him. How do these people nowadays not give him his praise. He deserves it so much and he's so humble. He will never say it
I love Kobe. He's my favorite player, but I grew up in the 70s and 80s, Bird was no joke, he pissed me off as an avid Lakers' fan: he was that good! ❤❤❤
30:20 Not just finished, he won the game. After Bird left the court Boston started trailing. Bird was watching innthe locker room. The doctor told him he was out, he had a broken cheek and a concussion. But Larry saw his team losing and thats unacceptable so he waited for the doc to leave the room and snuck backnout. He proceeded to put up likd 16 point in that last quarter. I dont remember the exact number but it was a crazy number just on its own. Considering Larry had double vision from the head trauma it goes from mind blowing to "ah... He did a 'Larry' again".
What makes Larry so great is his constant movement and flow throughout the game. Watch any game he plays. He is always moving. He can be a difference maker in a game without taking a shot. Michael couldn't do that. He had to have the ball. Lebron has to have the ball but wants to give it up when it comes down to the last shot, where Larry wants that ball in that last second and 8 times out of 10, will make the shot.
I don't think it's about tearing anyone down, I think it's describing a Philosophy that Took the Game to Another Level... I think LeBron would Agree. @@slagwill5599
My alltime starting 5; Kareem C, Bill Russell PF, Larry SF, Jason Williams PG, Pistol Pete Maravich SG. Now I could pick a half dozen other guys for the guard positions. I can hears guys screaming out for other forwards and centers, but I'm sticking with those 5. And I'll playing them against ANY team someone else selects.
When I discovered CZcams in 2011 one of the first video's I watched was a Larry Bird highlight video and I haven't stopped watching these Bird vids since. It's sick.
In perspective bird in the finals worked the boards against Hakeem Olajuwon in the finals…the same guy who was probably the best center in the nba for the next decade plus with Ralph Sampson who was also no joke…but also on top of that scored his ass off…guy was amazing
16:34 the Magic/Bird rivalry changed the NBA forever and an argument can be made that they saved the NBA. There’s numerous videos to back that up. No other individual rivalry has had as dramatic an effect on a sport. They just make the sport more enjoyable and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I love ❤ that. Please don't put me back on with that white guy 😂. What makes Larry Bird so incredibly great is he would tell you the play & then do it. I have played & watched many different sport's & i have never seen anything like this. Larry is a legend that's for sure.
Morning, I have heard Luca Doncic called the reincarnation of Larry Bird. After watching him, I would agree. A comparison between Larry and Luca might make an interesting video. Doncic is described as slow, like Larry. I heard one comment about that saying " Doncic" plays at his own speed and you cannot stop him. Sounds like a perfect description of Larry Bird being slow. You are right about the rivalry between Bird and Magic being the best in professional sports. That kind of rivalry is only possible in basketball where a rivalry between teams can be in any sport but the ability to do head to head with a specific competitor and keep stats between them for years is only possible in basketball. One thing I have noticed that would make a good stat. What percentage of shots does a player make that are 'net only'. That 1st 3 pt shoortout, Bird rattles the 1st one then it is net, net, net...
i have seen similarities between luka and larry. no of course he’s not as good but he has the same crazy all over the place non-current way of passing and playing. tough to put in words what i see
Nice breakdown. You appreciate what Bird was while keeping it fair and honest - you steer clear of going fanboy. And that's tough to do today, because there seems to be a tendency to almost deify Larry based on the way his contemporaries promote his legendary feats. But given the choice between the opinions of recency-biased fans and the opinions of former NBA superstars, I'll go with the superstars. And thank you on calling out Stephen A. for never giving. clean answer.
The problem with the people commenting, and comparing, the players of the 80s to the players of today is that most of the commentators weren't even born in the eighties and never experienced the league under the old rules. If a healthy Larry Bird played today, he'd own the league. Good reaction. Keep them coming. Stay safe, stay healthy. I'm 64 years old and just realized that I've been a fan of 3 different professional sports figures, who in their times, were arguably the best of their sports. Bird with Basketball, Brady with football, and, I know this is a stretch, but he was my favorite, Carl Yastrzemski with baseball. I'd claim Bobby Orr with hockey, but I've never been a fan. Just showed my age.
@@BU_TV I didn't see this question back when you asked it. I was from Rhode Island and the Boston teams were always my favorite teams over any New York teams.
your funny trying to read some of those statements so damn fast and sometime you didn't get it done i had to laugh so some advise just stop the tape and read it and make a comment if you like it seems near the end you did stop the tape i think but still loved your reaction
Bird and Magic is one of the most beautiful, one of the most important and, without a doubt, THE best rivalery story in sports. Period. Nothing else is even in the same League. Its Bird and Magic at the top, all alone as on a throne. Then Id say there is like two or three empty tiers under them before the runner up can be found. Thats how far their story out ranks anyone elses. Without them the NBA would not exist and with its dissappearance, literally every NBA superstar thst followed. You cant understate the absolutely world altering effect it would have if Larry and Magic never met. What would happen if Brady & co vanished? I harbor no malicious intent or feeling go either of them but mets be honest
The Actual ❤️ between these two there will never be another comparison. They started off as hated Rivals and became Great Friends. They Saved the NBA!!! and yes I think Larry Legend is undervalued as the possible GOAT!!!
BRADY COMPARES TO BIRD AND MAGIC WHEN IT COMES TO WINNING AND ACCOLADES. PEYTON COMPARES TO LEBRON WHEN IT COMES TO CHOKING IN THE CLUTCH AND BIG GAMES.
Unlike today's players bird would drive the lane and people would be hacking him but if he was knocked to the floor, he was back up and taking a shot. Never did he stay on the floor, he had a motor that would not quit.
The only man in basketball 🏀 to get the opponent to cheer him on like that
It was an absolute privilege to watch the NBA in the 1980's.

Same.
I grew up in this era. The NBA was going under. It was Larry and Magic that saved the NBA. The finals were being played on delay. Late at night after people went to bed. They took the NBA from midnight to prime time. From almost bankrupt to a world wide phenomenon.
Dominique is a humble dude too. Asked him or bird. Didn't answer. Just gave bird props. Hell of a player too
Dominique was awesome on the court and he is an excellent gentleman. That 4th quarter shootout between Dominique and Bird is spectacular. They respect each other. What a talented Battle that was....................
@13:12 “he meant to do that!”
Yes. The smile on his face as he’s backing away says it all!
Facts Irish! Larry know what he doing😩
BU: it is a joy to participate with you when you're reacting to Larry. As that one NBA commentator opined, "He (Larry) makes the game so beautiful!"
A part of the game that is mostly lost. Thank God for vintage footage of previous eras
Thank You, BU. I had to watch this 2 times. So much to absorb. The Birdman was a demon to my Lakers and later to the Sonics. West Coast fan back then. Times change, and seeing what the Birdman did, is amazing. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it! My dad said the same
One thing about these Bird videos is that it isn't Joe Blow or Fred Journeyman talking about how good he was.
Damn.
All facts
I think any great player will be a great player in any Era. (For me, Larry Bird especially. )
I mostly agree with this mmmhm
Agreed!
Could Shaq play if they call fouls like today? 😚
You are very right!
True
LaBron is not a top shelf passer, he is a ball hog and expects to get the ball and shoot, or you are riding pine
@@Zephyrmec why even mention him? lol
And a cry baby!
I am glad that you acknowledged the the IQ.... props
Its unmistakeable
Larry/Magic rivalry will always be the greatest because they played more championship games between themselves than any other 2 bonified stars.
Good work bud. It is good to see people with basketball smarts bring back things I hadn't thought about in a while. The game just doesn't interest me anymore so thanks for the memories and the recognition of a talented player - the GOAT.
Ditto.
Those fast breaks were…magical
Larry averaged 30.3 in college, and 29.9 in the '87-'88 season. career he's 24.3.
ty...saved me a trip to Bball reff
I'm impressed your knowledge and class throughout this Bird montage....God bless Peace
Likewise bless!
I was watching the NCAA championships this year and Magic and Larry both stood up for the young players. Both of them are still trying to save the NCAA and NBA. That really touched me. I honestly thought Larry would get sarcastic about the new people but he champions them.
I was in highschool for this game.
I saw Bird back in the day at the Gardens -so glad too.
Had to be quite a joy
I know the game has changed but man I miss this the trash talking & physicality in the 80' & 90'. The match-ups were also amazing. I do enjoy 3 point shooting it todays game, but back in the day was used more as a strategic weapon but I have no doubt if Larry was playing today he would be up with the best in terms of 3 point shooting numbers. The guy would be on the practice court all day & night lol I do miss the mix of more driving to the post, slam dunking over players, sky hooks etc Think the talent is around in todays game to mix it up more. Love the reaction videos. Much appreciated😊✊
All facts, I appreciate ya!
@@BU_TV Hell, Larry with today's medical technology would've gotten proper treatment for his spinal injury humping concrete around at his mom's house in the offseason and his career would've been a lot longer. Not to mention nutrition, workout regimen, etc.
He came back with skull fractures and concussion if I do not remember wrong.
Correct he did
When Irving, Magic, Jordon and a bunch of other of the best ever say Larry is the best or in the top 5 ever, you need to listen. I watched Larry play and it’s hard to explain how ridiculously great he was. He should be in everyone’s top 5 all time greats. He makes it on Mount Rushmore every time.
top 2 or Bust.
With new information comes new perspective
Thanks and appreciate ya!
... we made steady racial progress while they captained the league...
Larry Bird and the showtime Lakers saved the league from collapsing of scandals and drug abuse. We should never forget this.
Len Bias was a huge loss. I think that’s why they have black tape on their uniforms in some film.
I agree, Bird wouldn't have to adjust to the size of today's players. When Larry played, every team had a legit 7 foot center. Kareem, Hakeem, Ewing. Ralph Sampson was 7 foot 4 for pete's sake.
For reeal! Thank you!
They jump higher now and they cab bust 3s like nobodies business. Larry would have to upgrade his handles to survive in todays league.
@@kool4209 Larry could shoot with either hand, today Larry would have grown up with the 3 point line. He wouldn't need to upgrade anything. There isn't a player in today's league that can jump higher than Jordan.

Coming from a dukie
Bird and Magic is THE SPORTS story of the last century.
Clearly! and yawn ... we've yet to see anything APPROACHING IT in this one?
Watch his regular games...pick one or two and youll see more than these highlight reels. Every damn game he played seemed epic. So many more games that showcased his talent
That was one heck of a response Michael Jordan gave.
Best Bird compilation I've seen! Thank you!! You left out the Dream Team moments...
Thanks you! Dream Team video is up as well
I gotta give Steven A credit (I was loosing faith in him) for laying out the definition of GOAT AND giving the knod to Larry GOAT.
Facts. Humble beginnings fr
Bruh,... literally most people have humble beginnings. Why do people talk as if that's "weird" lmao?
I just subscribed. Dude that was awesome. You said things about Larry I’ve been saying for years. Absolutely loved it. Also 100% with you on KAT.
Thanks for the sub and facts! We gotta keep it 100 with Bird and the other greats! KAT😂
Who’s your top 5 all time? I got mj bird Kareem wilt magic.
I am not from Boston , but was able to watch live Celtic games when the legend was playing i will say none of the games were boring unlike todays games over priced and over hyped . The unselfish play the killer instinct was on full display Bird hands down top three of all time.
Never seen a man that could start at any position on the floor
Bird, Magic, Elgin Baylor ...
Well apparently they say Lebron can😂😂
I know you have seen most of these video;s but you keep watching , hats off to you,
For the one or two clips i never seen before that might be in there😂 I have almost ran through all Bird documentaries.
I love that breakdown! Thanks for sharing!
My future wife insisted i had to come to the first basketball game of the 1976 season to watch her perform on the court. It was Larry Bird's first college game and he was simply the most exciting player i had ever seen. I got to watch him for FREE on my student ID for the next two years!
Bird held the season record in the league for DWS 4 times.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
At 14:21 we both just laughed at the same exact time 😂😂😂
Reggie had a big point: today's rules, with the turnstile defenses - he'd be open for shots, and passing lanes would be wide open.
“No fool, answer the question” lol
30:20
Not just finished, he won the game.
Why tear others down just to build one up tho? Bird is great and incomparable on his own.
I don't think it's about tearing anyone down, I think it's describing a Philosophy that Took the Game to Another Level... I think LeBron would Agree. @@slagwill5599
You are totally correct,Larry Bird Can play anytime .
So many great centers cant be mad
I'm totally in agreement with you and would add Magic and Larry are the greatest rivalry in sports history.
It was all perfect timing

When I discovered CZcams in 2011 one of the first video's I watched was a Larry Bird highlight video and I haven't stopped watching these Bird vids since. It's sick.
In perspective bird in the finals worked the boards against Hakeem Olajuwon in the finals…the same guy who was probably the best center in the nba for the next decade plus with Ralph Sampson who was also no joke…but also on top of that scored his ass off…guy was amazing
Bird really was of the highest caliber tier
16:34 the Magic/Bird rivalry changed the NBA forever and an argument can be made that they saved the NBA. There’s numerous videos to back that up.
No other individual rivalry has had as dramatic an effect on a sport. They just make the sport more enjoyable and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I love ❤ that. Please don't put me back on with that white guy 😂. What makes Larry Bird so incredibly great is he would tell you the play & then do it. I have played & watched many different sport's & i have never seen anything like this. Larry is a legend that's for sure.
I'm speaking of the man in the right hand corner during this
Morning, I have heard Luca Doncic called the reincarnation of Larry Bird.
Luca isn't close to as good as Bird was, despite how good Luca is.
Tell me what ya think: czcams.com/video/03Dj_GJh9qc/video.html
😂☠️
As I think it was Byron Scott said, "Luca makes Larry Bird look like a sprinter." LOL
i have seen similarities between luka and larry. no of course he’s not as good but he has the same crazy all over the place non-current way of passing and playing. tough to put in words what i see
Today's NBA is tailor made for Bird. Great vid bro.
Aram we will only see it in 2k
Love it. Thanks man.
Thank you fam
Nice breakdown. You appreciate what Bird was while keeping it fair and honest - you steer clear of going fanboy. And that's tough to do today, because there seems to be a tendency to almost deify Larry based on the way his contemporaries promote his legendary feats. But given the choice between the opinions of recency-biased fans and the opinions of former NBA superstars, I'll go with the superstars. And thank you on calling out Stephen A. for never giving. clean answer.
Appreciate the kind words! I try my best to evaluate and give an opinion as fair as possible, even to the detriment of my own favorite players.
You from MA?
Totally agree. Don't forget Secretariat. Another great athlete. Same age as you. Larry is my obsession. 😅

"It ain't bragging if you can do it," Don Meredith.
In 88 Larry would have been 32 years old
NO 1 is a GOAT IF You become a Legend You have DONE your part'
I agree! Peyton and Brady don’t compare to Bird and Magic.
Thank you 😂
I can’t stand Brady.
@@kingko3897 I disagree but I do respect your opinion.
Thanks for letting it roll
Unlike today's players bird would drive the lane and people would be hacking him but if he was knocked to the floor, he was back up and taking a shot. Never did he stay on the floor, he had a motor that would not quit.
