  • My cousin finished the fuel system rebuild on his 185, so we put it back on the dyno to see what kind of improvement there is. I got my 1955 FWA and my 2255 FWA out to see what they are made of, and the 2255 gave me a bit of a surprise.

    Chis you sure do have a nice collection of MFWD Olivers!! The 1955 is one of my favorite tractors and a 4WD one is on my bucket list of ones to hopefully acquire someday. If you get a chance to put it in some videos please do. Thanks

    This is so cool to me, watching old iron on a dyno it's something you don't see every day. I wish I had an opportunity to put my 64 jd 4010 gas on one, one day. I have the "big block" 6 cylinder and it definitely is the most powerful 4010/4020 that i have operated. Even compared to the diesel models the thing is powerful. My neighbors have a 4010 diesel and a 4020 diesel and while pulling a plow it blew them out of the water. In have read up quite a bit in it and some magazines/blogs claim it has 120hp and some say only 80-85 hp, personally I think it has atleast 115 since I got to plow with my neighbors 4020 with a turned up pump and some other things( he pulls with it in the county Fair) and it kept right up with it even was slightly faster. I couldn't believe it but ever since I picked it up it always impressed me I am going to rebuild the motor this fall and am going to check to see if it has any head work done to it, and if it doesn't I am going to port and polish the head.

    Nice video my guess on the 1955 was of by 4hp my guess was 105hp. The rest i had no clue what they are surppose to put out.
    White and Oliver were always under rated on hp by the factory which is not bad thing.

    Well, that was bittersweet. It was AWESOME to see them on the dyno, but, too bad about the 2255 :( That's a real bummer. However, I thought 540 was only supposed to go to like 70-75HP or so and above that you should run 1000 RPM. I believe (and I think you could probably confirm) that 1000 would actually put less load on the clutches? The 1955 did good! And the 185 was great!
    *AWESOME VIDEO* !!! Thanks for sharing! Those are some awesome tractors man! Looking forward to the PTO rebuild videos... kinda :(

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  Před 5 lety

      This is the first "real" load I've put on the PTO of the 2255. It's just been fertilizer spreading all these years. I'm glad I found out this way, I had often thought about putting it on my generator during harvest to give it a workout. That could have been bad.
      I thought about switching to 1000 rpm, but didn't want to mess with it. I'm pretty sure the horsepower recommendation for 540 is for the implements. The pto clutch is turning the same speed, no matter which output speed you choose. There's more gear reduction for 540, so if my logic is correct, there should be less of a strain for the clutch in that speed.
      The 185 came from our dealership, and hasn't been more than a few miles away ever since. They also have a 160 FWA. If my memory serves, the 185 got transferred in from a dealer in Kentucky.

    • @burningdinosaurs
      @burningdinosaurs Před 5 lety +1

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris Yeah, I suppose technically, no matter how it's geared, 1 HP is 1 HP, whether it's 1ft/lb at 5252RPM or 5252ft/lbs at 1 rpm. Clutches being at engine speed either way, it wouldn't technically change the load on the clutches, only the torque on the shaft(s) would change. Well, yeah, good deal you found out on the dyno and not when you really need it! That's my whole reason for putting my 1855 on the dyno, not so much for finding out HP, but for finding any problems it might have.
      That's pretty neat about the 185 and 160, you and your family have a real special place in the history of Oliver tractors and it's pretty cool to be able to talk with you and share videos and such. Thanks for posting! I know I really appreciate it!

    Hi Chris, I am looking at buying a 1950 Oliver front wheel assist but it has no 3 point or PTO, there is also an Oliver 1800 gas tractor, could I use the parts off the 1800 to put a PTO and 3 point on the 1950? Thanks

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  Před 5 lety

      Yes, both will bolt right up. One thing to watch out for is the gears that drive the hydraulic pump. They reversed the angle that they cut the gear teeth at for the 50 series, so you'll either need to swap the gear on the pump, or the gear that the PTO drive shaft goes through and the middle gear so the teeth will mesh properly.

    Can you possibly make a video on what you’re doing with the dyno? I mean other than reading the gauge, how do you determine HP? Can you call it down to stall out the tractor? Sorry for my ignorance, but I’ve always wondered how you get your hp number.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  Před 5 lety +1

      You can pull them down and stall them, but I don't like to do that. I've got to pull the dyno in the shop and see why the tachometer isn't reading sometimes. I can make a video and explain how it works. I do have another video that gives a quick explanation on how my dyno works. The PTO shaft is turning a brake drum inside the machine, and the brake pads are connected to the shaft that comes out the back. By turning a knob, I send more pressure to the brake pads, which makes them want to twist, that moves the bar on the back, pushing a hydraulic cylinder that is connected to the gauge, showing horsepower. czcams.com/video/m96FnjfNGH0/video.html

    • @jamesholt2403
      @jamesholt2403 Před 4 lety

      After watching to the end I felt like an idiot for asking... I did see it on valve cover for a sec but forgot to take down the question. I drive dump trucks and a turbo 3208 wasn't "bad" for the time I drove it... Makes me wonder how the 3150 with turbo would fair in a highway application. Assuming they weren't turbo.. or optioned.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  Před 4 lety

      I've done the same thing. I've never heard of a 3150 with a factory turbo, but I'm not a Cat expert either. The 3208 replaced the 3150 midway through production of the 2255, so I'd lean towards no turbo for the 3150.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  Před 5 lety

      I haven't had to do much to mine, but I've heard some parts are hard to find. Between the Cummins engine and all the parts common to the 1655, it shouldn't be too hard to keep one running.
