  • This video is about Howth and the Trams
This is a small piece from "Lorcan Film Unit" (also know as the Crowe family) piece of Howth. In this piece Leslie and his family members show us the tram route of Howth
Once again firefighter and historian by all accounts Mr Leslie Crowe has captured some great footage of Howth. We are lucky enough to have accompanying audio supplied by Leslie himself. We would like to add a special acknowledgement to Noel Crowe, who provided the piano accompaniment .
There is more of this to come and it is great to see that this is being passed on to anyone that is interested around the world. So if you know any of the people in the videos please email.
    Hope you enjoy.

We had a tram system in Swansea called the Swansea and Mumbles Railway which ran from 1806 untill abandonement in 1960 by the bus company South Wales Transport. They said the reason they closed it was due to it not making money. After doing some work and research I found that it was making money, and the truth was that it would be competing with it's bus service. This is also the same bus company that got rid of the street trams in Swansea in 1939. Plans are in place to open the Swansea and Mumbles Railway with a new route.

I would say that most of this footage dates from 1957 at the latest. The Hill of Howth Tram closed that year. Lovely images and even though the tram had gone, that is how I remember Howth when I was growing up in the 1960s.

Goverments were not interested in the environment from 1950s onwards

Imagine if that old tramline still existed...the tourists would flock to it...a lot of it is still there just no track on it...I have thought about it and it would be possible to resurrect some of it...anyone agree
