- A rendition of the iconic Erhu piece - 二泉映月 (Erquan Yingyue) ‘Moon’s Reflection on Erquan’ in a quartet, performed by our Erhu instructors of Eight Tones Music School (along with cellist - Jun Sian). This version of ‘Moon’s Reflection on Erquan’ has been rearranged by Wu Zuqiang from a solo Erhu piece, to an ensemble - producing a sound more dynamic, layered, refreshing, yet still maintaining many of the traditional elements in the original ‘Moon’s Reflection on Erquan’ (*Lookout for the build-up towards the halfway mark of the video). The Gaohu, Erhu and Zhonghu instruments used in the video have been masterfully crafted by the Erhu Luthier - Master Zhang Lian Jun (hailing from Wuxi), giving the quartet a beautiful, unified and well-balanced tone colour.

This video was filmed on 10th September 2021 by our Eight Tones in-house production team on the rooftop garden of Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC). Audio recorded separately in studio. The Write-Up of Erquan:
The 二泉映月 ‘Moon’s Reflection on Erquan’ is a music composed by blind folk musician Hua Yanjun (华彦钧), known colloquially as A'Bing 阿炳, in 1949. The Er Quan, 二泉 or properly known as 'The Second Spring Under Heaven' (天下第二泉) refers to a spring located at the foot of Mount Hui (惠山) in the western part of A'Bing's native city of Wuxi (无锡), in China's Jiangsu province. The spring is also where A'Bing regular performs his music. ‘Moon’s Reflection on Erquan’ depicts the bitterness and hardships faced daily by Hua Yanjun in his life of performing on the streets. Back then in China, the street musicians were considered to be of a lower class, and often classified together with the beggars on the streets. The ‘Moon’s Reflection on Erquan’ also incorporates a variety of traditional folk music techniques and style, and it is now a renown piece - classified as one of the National Folk Music Treasures Of China, and it has also won the '20th Century Chinese Classics Award'.
《二泉映月》作品于20世纪50年代初由音乐家杨荫浏先生根据阿炳 (华彦钧) 的演奏，录音记谱整理，灌制成唱片后很快风靡全国。这首乐曲自始至终流露的是一位饱尝人间辛酸和痛苦的盲艺人的思绪情感，作品展示了独特的民间演奏技巧与风格，以及无与伦比的深邃意境，显示了中国二胡艺术的独特魅力，它拓宽了二胡艺术的表现力，曾获“20世纪华人音乐经典作品奖”。

Exhilarating. The openness of the arrangement handing out the over-repetitive solo version (the song was never written intended for solo leading to this problem) is beautifully managed with the four voices coming in and out of dialogue. Very accomplished.
This piece was actually written by Ah Bing for Er Hu solo. It seems to me that this quartet is based on the symphony version arranged by 吳祖强。

二泉映月不是阿炳创作的，二泉映月其实是广东音乐《三潭印月》，阿炳只是学了三潭印月，然后在卖唱过程中改了几个音而已，但绝大部分就是三潭印月。你们自己拉一拉三潭印月，就会发现和二泉映月几乎一样。
听过也搜过，也不太清楚谁对谁错谁正确。即使是改编还是移植还是重写，说到底阿炳的贡献还是不少的。
我听了三潭印月，没听出来这两首曲子有杀相同的地方，基调都完全不同。
冷知识：“二泉映月”这个曲子根本没有名字，是音乐家在阿炳临死前录完曲子后起的“二泉映月”，源自阿炳每日卖艺的“天下第二泉”惠山泉，曲名也不是阿炳起的。何来学的三潭印月？？
你怎么不说阿炳学的贝多芬的“月光协奏曲”的？

这首曲子也不一定是阿炳写的，有些人记载这是个民曲改编过来的，然后取名为《二泉映月》。改编的成分多少，写的成分多少，没有人知道--不过据了解，阿炳拉这首曲子时给人录了一遍就去世了。阿炳的贡献确实是不可少，但这首曲子也可能是完全改编出来的，如果当时阿炳没有改编，你也不可能会听到《二泉映月》。
我们这个版本是大师吴祖强先生写给西洋拉弦乐，过后再由指挥家倪恩辉再改编给胡琴以及大提琴。
