Omg was he supposed to fundamentally change the way they operated for them? This was 1000% their fault
It’s kind of the job of the SOT to put in place policies and procedures to ensure safe travel and that consumers don’t get ripped off. But since you are a leftist, you give Pete a break.
@@Kingfisher1215 so you only have spamming the same message about how you wanted government to takeover a company? And you complained about "socialists" trying to take over industry how many times over your lifetime?

Mayor Peter Paul buttigieg.. No experience needed secretary of transportation of the United States 🇺🇸 of America.. riding coattails since 2009..
Why blame him, what's the point?
No, point. Fox news and some far leftists are simply joining up forces to attack the Secretary of Transportation.
The other airlines seemed to do reasonably well, Southwest had the worst numbers…sounds like that was Southwest’s issue more than Pete’s…..and how much did the CEO earn again?
Say something stupid again, non American democrat funded fake unfed unresponsive bot
9 million.
Agreed.
The Secretary is in Government.... leave the Man alone.... THIS is Corporate America,,,B.S.
It’s kind of the job of the SOT to put in place policies and procedures to ensure safe travel and that consumers don’t get ripped off. But since you are a leftist, you give Pete a break.
Southwest's failures were due to their own mismanagement. Their CEO still gonna get that $5.8 million in annual comp this year though.
This is pretty much a hit piece. Aside from Southwest, holiday air travel was smooth as silk for the first time in years. Southwest has antiquated fundamental problems unique to itself.
@@Almasays except he's put in no regulations or enforcement actions???? The video literally points out how he hasn't gone after the major US carriers and only goes after foreign airlines with fines that end up being 1/10 of what the big flashy press release says :)
Yes, this is a hit piece.
@@Almasays Except he hasn't proposed any major regulations. All he's done is ask the airlines pretty please to do better by consumers, which of course lacks any teeth. According to the NYTimes:
"But nearly 40 state attorneys general don’t think so. Just as Department of Transportation officials were giving a press briefing on their recent successes getting the airlines to change, the attorneys general published a letter arguing that the Department of Transportation’s approach is so weak that it should be stripped of its ability to regulate aviation"
The DOT suffers from regulatory capture and actively works to promote the airline industry, not regulate it. Buttigieg is more of the same
Generally love your insights, but in this case the premise that the DOT secty could rectify this in real or near real time is substantially flawed. The causes are systemic and/or business/managerial; 'fixing' those root causes are beyond DOTs ability to quickly modify anything. And 'punishing' via fines is only effective to induce long term changes, and wouldn't have helped one stranded traveler
But he was getting letters from Bernie, Warren, and others since last summer. He could have been more proactive. I like him, but nobody's perfect.
THIS. Thank you!! The blame falls squarely on Southwest and SW only. Fox got it wrong, as usual. Sadly so did MSNBC. I miss decent reporters.
The threat of fines would have set them straight. Pete is an establishment nightmare who cares more about corporate America than the people he serves. It's too bad because Pete could have been a contender. Forget about your aspirations of being president someday in the future. It will never happen. Sorry, Pete, you're a do-nothing loser.
@@jahbloomie The DOT has enacted new rules. The thing arsonists on the left won't tell you is that, it's a legal obligation for these rules to be reviewed for 4 months before being enacted. The Left acts with you the way the GOP does with MAGAts, relying on your ignorance of the process to make you mad at the people they want you to be mad at. Zero honesty.
And the Department of Transportation CANNOT force private airlines what booking software they should use. Remember, at some point Southwest didn't know where it's crews, passengers, let alone their baggage are. You can't blame Secretary Buttigieg for that.
Should the government know everything in every private business?
They cant even get them to pay their taxes...smdh
The current philosophy of big business that nothing matters but profits, no matter what, is to blame.
It’s kind of the job of the SOT to put in place policies and procedures to ensure safe travel and that consumers don’t get ripped off. But since you are a leftist, you give Pete a break.
@@Kingfisher1215 but it is the modern GOP who claims government telling private industry what to do is "socialism" so you would have complained either way.
@@Kingfisher1215 No, since I read the post explaining what happened there, I stated my opinion. And the current philosophy of dollars and cents over eveything else sucks.
@@Kingfisher1215 US Government can't force them to upgrade outdated software. Southwest does not even have a baggage claim system that is automated. Putting in the scanners to read the tags costs millions and quite a bit of time... baggage handlers have to be retrained to place the luggage so the scanners can read them... it isn't a single camera scanner eithrer but multiple point. Then each baggage cart needs a hand scanner and training has to happen there. Plus it all had to integrate with their legacy flight scheduler. And that is JUST for baggage claims. Each airport thry service would have to be upgraded. This is a LONG fix. And that doesn't address their scheduling issues.
the blame is completely on the management of South West Airlines
The problem is Pete buttigieg said everything was going to be just fine he was wrong again he's in way over his head
I agree! The Secretary of Transportation has no authority to tell private airlines what booking software they can use.
I'm surprised and saddened by your hit piece. The airline industry has been going downhill for years, long before this administration. You need to blame the industry itself. Personally, I haven't flown in years because of all the things like cancellations, delays, smaller seats, more seats, less leg room and the list goes on.
And not a company corporate executive will lose a dime or a bonus.

HOW ABOUT YOU BLAME SOUTHWEST MANAGMENT? The Department of Transportation does NOT run private airlines. This is 100% Southwest management's fault. They're still using booking software from the 90s ffs.
A friend came up with a theory about the actions of corporate bosses. When you get the job, ask for your bonus and/or salary to be tied to the share price. Then implement staff cuts, service reductions, reduced benefits and some minor price increases. Nothing illegal. The market analysts love cost reductions (your profit goes up) and so the share price goes up. You make good bonuses.
It will take a few years for your customers to notice or care. So after a couple of years, you leave before the company suffers the effects. The last good staff leave, customers abandon the company and the share price tanks. Customers are left stranded (sometimes literally) and investors lose a lot of money. But you’re in another job and can say “well, when I was in charge, everything was fine.”
And repeat.
Cool story, I ignored it all, but you and your buddy should go discuss it in your next pub crawl.
@@Kingfisher1215 the very fact that you deemed this a story and “cool” means that you didn’t ignore it, dum dum. 😆😆

Southwest did it to themselves! Department of transportation is not to blame. Southwest was responsible for 99% of canceled flights ........ they messed up,not the Department of Transportation.
This weather happens every year! And yet, these companies are behind each time. They are more concerned about profits. They took billions in ppp loans and they can't get their ish together? They should have to repay their loans.
Sure, all the other airlines were fine, but it's Pete's fault? Do tell...

@@Kingfisher1215 maybe I'm the kind of leftist who believes that businesses should be free to succeed or fail without the nanny state government stepping in and regulating away market freedoms. Sounds like you're the big govt socialist, sweetie.
This is the "just asking questions" dodge. Unless you can explain how the regulator could have foreseen and corrected SWAs internal problems there is no story.
It's less a matter of correcting SWA internal errors and more a matter of proactively regulating these companies to ensure that they can fulfill their obligations to the people.
All those people saw how historically bad it was up north. They could have simply cancelled their trip.
How?
It's a private company.
They don't know either. It's just a hit job.
Southwest needs to take responsibility for their billion dollar business. Period.
So, wait. You're accusing a guy who is not in charge of a business for the business's failure to do business? Pete can't make them upgrade their systems. Pete can't make them schedule within their workforce. Pete can't even make them pay their employees for working (did you know most airlines don't pay their flight attendants full wages when they work the gates?). But you somehow think that decades of deregulation, stripping the DOT of their ability to fine companies REAL damages, to break up monopolies and prevent coopetition to hold majority market shares is all Pete's fault cause he was in the chair when it all blew up for just ONE airline?
DOT is an enforcement agency, not a lawmaker, regulator or business officer. For once in your life, blame those responsible and hold THEM accountable. Southwest's CEO is "sorry." Congress has had the opportunity to fix it since the '70s and they haven't. You really don't think either of them have a higher responsibility for this than the jerk in charge of the DOT for less than two years!?
Southwest Airlines is a cheap airline......meaning they cut corners so you can fly for $50 one-way......you get what you pay for.
It’s the best airline in America. I love flying them. Clearly you never leave moms basement
@@Kingfisher1215 No, it's the cheapest airline for a reason. Does your Section 8 home have a basement?
Right Medhi, the government forced Southwest to NOT upgrade their digital infrastructure. Though to be sure this should cost Southwest alot.
Now you’re blaming the government for Southwest Airlines fault, lmao
Don’t the people on Fox think the government should not interfere in the free market? Can we give some credit for all this to Steve Dickson for basically telling the airlines to do whatever they needed to do to make money?
Yeah, sure.Pete could have gone to a SW data center and updated their software.
Apparently that's what Fox news and some far left politicians in the Democratic party think. Shaking my head.
Is the secretary of energy responsible for gas prices. You people get on my nerves .
Either let them regulate or not. Price limits needs to be set

No one can guarantee you that. It's beyond immature to think a party affiliation changes that.
There is a video of police making a black family leave the security area because their flight was cancelled. It was a South West terminal. I fly more than most people. That was insane. Most airports don’t have food or lounges outside of the security zone.
Where is Pete to respond to your hack job?
I'm all in favour of Free Enterprise and the Capitalist System until my flight is cancelled and then I want The Government To Take Over

What could he do? Suddenly add planes into the system? It doesn’t work that way. It’s the businesses fault for not delivering. Nothing has changed in the airline industry in decades. Government can only do so much. It’s not surprising.
how can this "expert" have knowledge that airlines are building schedules, taking payment for tickets with the FOREKNOWLEDGE that they aren't going to have the crew to operate the flights? he lost all credibility with that assumptive statement passing it off as fact right there. he knows better than that
I think that’s exactly what they do.
Because it's exactly what they do. Been going on for a long time.
No it is not what they do
Okay, so if it's out of Pete's hands who do we turn to, to resolve these issues with the airlines or rail workers for the future? Or do we as a massive collective of consumers use another airline when we are not satisfied with their service.
What role does the tax payer funded Government play to help us Citizens for situations like this?
You write a lot about how you want Republicans in charge and how their policies are better but now you suddenly want the government to take over a business which you complained was "socialism" for years? Ironic.

The Airlines get BILLIONS of dollars from the US Government. A common sense person would expect that airlines would put that money into technology and investment for the airline to operate efficiently. What happens is that the money goes into the CEO's checking account. If airlines are not going to do the ONE JOB they are there to do, then taxpayer money should STOP going to them.
It's easy to warn against problems it's another thing for one person to just fix it with a snap of a finger. Isn't this a norm for any big business in the USA they don't pay workers their taxes or compensate consumers but CEO personnel get huge bonuses year after year.
Completely agreed. It's easy to warn, but none of them knew that Southwest's booking system would go belly up.

We must take a step back and look at the big picture.
Southwest is a low-cost airline. Low cost means low service and low wages hard press employees. Or more simply you get what you paid for!
The Transportation Secretary job is not to help the Airline; his job is to protect the customers. The Secretary of Transportation protects the customers by strictly enforcing the existing Law. The Law says that Southwest must refund the customer for the cancelled flights, that Southwest must pay the hotel costs and meal costs for the customers affected by the cancelled flights, that Southwest must compensate the customers for delayed or lost luggage.
This will cost an arm and a leg for Southwest. The Transportation Secretary must teach a lesson to airline companies. You have to assume the responsibility for your bad management.
Actually, SW is only obliged to refund the cost of the cancelled flight. No food, no rentals, no hotels, no return flight through a competitor. This is what deregulation gets you. 👍
@@jnewcomb Take the time to listen to Erika Kullberg videos. She is a layer and she know the Law!

if a DOT penalty is already nearly $40k per violation, what's his definition of "real penalties", $100k per violation?
if the DOT jacks up the already exorbitant fines, then the public needs to get ready to pay MUCH HIGHER TICKET PRICES for the foreseeable future. gtfoh this guy's a joke

Sure SW has their problems but their fleet size is much lower than Delta and American by 400 to 700 planes. Each of those had 12 to 17% cancellations daily. Did SW think of safety because of the size of their aircraft? Their fleet is 737's while the others have air buses and few 737's
