The bike itself is charming, imaginative, has a fabulous sound. Your filming technique and choice of angles tells a story as charming as the bike. Thank you.
@KapteinOpel You might be surprised. A lot of older engines used much more oil, esp things like this. 25% is not irrational. These were high compression, low RPM engines designed for a steady work load. My Grubee bike runs on 18:1 gas and 30weight motor oil. It doesn't make visible smoke, and runs well. 2 cycle oil is much thinner and may lead to ring failure on some engines.
Wonderful video of an even more wonderful home made mechanical project. seeing this reassures me that Americans are still smart enough and motivated enough to design and build great ideas. Thank you so much for sharing your hobby with us.
Wow, wow, and WOW! You went to the trouble to actually make a GOOD video. I am about to start restoration and motorizing of a 24" early 50's girl's Shelby for my wife. It was her girlhood bike. Your video is an inspiration. My sincere thanks to you for making and posting it. Now I'm going to watch it again.
Probably the only way in a modern time to experience an antique on the road would be to build something like this. Everything it's so expensive now it's hard to imagine what the world was like decades ago. He is quite the craftsman, look up his other accomplishments.
Search "m23 rally brooklyn 2012" on CZcams. Mopeds have never left. They may not be exactly the "craze" you speak of, but they are still out there, in force. Search "Mellstaträffen" or "Bromvliegers" to see more mopeds in one place, than you'll be able to count. I think most folks who ride mopeds use the engines, not the other way round... lol. it's a lot easier to pedal a bicycle, than it is a moped... And on a bicycle, you'll actually get someplace when you pedal... You've got to do a lot of cranking, to get anyplace pedaling a moped...
Guys I think you getting confused between percentages and ratios. Older two stokes often used 20:1 ratio. 20 parts fuel to one part oil, or even 16:1 fuel oil. this is 5% oil by volume for 20:1 and 6.25% for 16:1. More modern two strokes using synthetic oil now run around 40:1 ratio which is 2.5% oil by volume. By the way 25:1 ratio could be bought in Australia, a long time ago, as premixed pump gas for two stroke outboard marine engines this one is 4% by volume oil. Cheers, nice engine BTW
Sweet video!! 5 stars! Could you make another video showing how all the different mechanisms work, with regards to starting the engine and engaging drive!? That would be really cool to see!
How did you do the clutch assembly and drive the rear wheel? I would like to make a similar bike with a Maytag model 92, but I can't find either a place that sells just the drive system sans engine, or any instructions on how to make a similar belt drive. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
There was a time when 30 grade oil was mixed with fuel. Having owned a 49 125cc BSA Bantam over 50 years ago as a teenager, the fuel cap had the makes and grades stamped on it, in those days with leaded fuel, many two strokes suffered the bane of plug whiskering, Something I experienced myself along with more frequent decokes, the self mix two stroke oil cured the plug whiskering but the coke collected in the silencer, happy days, as fuels are now unleaded, plug whiskering is now a thing of the past.
I love the engine and work you've obviously put in to making your bike! The only thing that bothers me is that you are running directly on to the tyre! I had a 'Trojan' cycle motor that used the same method. I found that the tyres were ruined after about 10miles! I'm sure, that with your clear skills that you are able to design a belt drive and clutch, so that you don't eat your tyres on every outing! Best wishes, J
So many questions on this bike and engine. Nice video! It's a shame you won't take the time to answer your viewers questions. Must be too much of a hassle, I guess?
Awesome bike! These Maytag engines sound a lot smoother and quieter than the Chinese kit motors.I'm considering building a bike but hate the sound of the kit engines.
What coil did you use for this bike? I really want to get away from my magnito and go with battery and coil but use the original points.m as you know maytag aftermarket coils are way too expensive.mmis your battery 6 or 12 volt Great bike. Love it
sweet ride im going to build a tank like that for my motor bike at some point that or a chopper style since mine is a Schwinn jaguar beach cruiser and has the curved backbone also how does the flat twin do on hills and top end speed?
I'm going to do a video soon on the fuel ratio and fuel used for maytag engines. For those of you who are curious what the fuel ratio is and what fuel is used, feel free to check out that video when I get it uploaded.
Dang that's pretty bad ass Also did you make that stand for your bike or do you buy it If you made it your safe can you make a video of it I'll love to make one for my motorized bike
Did you do this yourself ? I see the internal stock carburetor has been replaced by a conventional external carb, very clever ,I have a model 72 maytag and was trying to think of a way to do that, what carb did you go with ?
Wow. You've really cut the shaft short on both ends. I got a maytag engine kind of specifically for putting on a bike, but I don't think that I entirely want to cut the crankshaft short.
Maytag engines are two stroke engines. They run off af a 16:1 fuel ratio. The fuel used is coleman camp fuel and straight 30 weight non detergent mineral based oil. So one gallon of camp fuel to 8 ounces of the oil.
The magneto is gone. He has points and battery ignition. That's how he kills the engine by taking the mini-alligator clip off the battery at the end. Must be running a "total loss" ignition. If he were to ride it for several hours, the ignition would drain the battery and it would stop running.
150 years between the bike and the engine, thumb throttle, belt clutch, no visible brakes.... Love it
10 years
The bike itself is charming, imaginative, has a fabulous sound. Your filming technique and choice of angles tells a story as charming as the bike. Thank you.
That has got to be one of the coolest bikes there is.
Maytag engines are so damn adaptable
this quiet man is sure a Legend of diy motorcycle...he talks with his engine

I really like this. These are 2 stroke but sound like 4 stroke.
That is so visually and sonically beautiful ❤
Wonderful video of an even more wonderful home made mechanical project. seeing this reassures me that Americans are still smart enough and motivated enough to design and build great ideas. Thank you so much for sharing your hobby with us.

This thing is all sorts of bad ass
reminds me of the short lived moped craze in NYC in the 80's. most people just used them as bicycles. this is essentially an ad hoc moped.

Boyd Reeds i grew up in NYC,i can't speak to your experience, nor should anyone assume i was talking about a universal scenario.
i love this stuff..incredible talents and skills.
very nice work on the build bro. she is a keeper. lol cheers to the Gears!!
I love the 2 into 1 exhuast! sounds great
it may not be fast but it sure beats walking and pedaling lol! it actually does pretty good for only having 5/8 horsepower :)
The sounds in this video are so epic. You have a great recorder.
This is absolutely great.
Awesome bike and video. Well done.
Nice setup!
great video love the bike
Thank you!
Nice MAB!
This is so very cool!
Awesome job 👍👍👍💯%
BEAUTIFUL!

Very nice bike love the work and more so the angles of the vid reminds me of a bbc short
very awesome ! I really love that
That is 1st class. I like it a lot.
Great vid!
good job, from 3:12 to 3:27 it sounds even better than a Harley Davidson.
Sweet video!!
5 stars!
Could you make another video showing how all the different mechanisms work, with regards to starting the engine and engaging drive!? That would be really cool to see!
super bike and Very VERY nice camera work
Super, beau travail. 👍👍

is that straight gas I just saw poured in? don't see the blue tint of 2 stroke oil
It's coleman camp fuel mixed with straight 30 weight non detergent mineral based oil. The coleman camp fuel diludes the color of the oil.

A work of art.

Good job sir.
I like it a lot.
dude! i love this.
That looks like fun.
So many questions on this bike and engine. Nice video! It's a shame you won't take the time to answer your viewers questions. Must be too much of a hassle, I guess?
Thought you had a video of this completely done on CZcams. All painted up ? Thanks
Cool camera shots man.
I LOVE it!

If you made it your safe can you make a video of it I'll love to make one for my motorized bike
Hello, If you wouldn't mind, can you tell me what coil you chose to use for this project? and how it was wired?
COOL!
I like it.
I’ve got a single cylinder Maytag engine.
I wonder if it would work in a bicycle?
how did you covert the maytag to carb set up? and electronic ignition? would love to talk more about you design!
You interested in a twin?
The muffler looks sweet on that
Pretty neat
way to go!
That battery mount is really scary though.
Woah, what was the orange car we seen? Looks like you got some classic cars in your area
Did you do this yourself ? I see the internal stock carburetor has been replaced by a conventional external carb, very clever ,I have a model 72 maytag and was trying to think of a way to do that, what carb did you go with ?
nice hat!
Great!!!
What was the source for the carb?
Fuel/oil mix is about 1/4 30w non-detergent motor oil to 3/4 gasoline. Some people will run these engines on naphtha/white gas (i.e. Coleman fuel).
I have a predator 212cc engine and sometimes run it on Coleman fuel, because it doesn't stink, when I park it inside.
do you have to mix fuel and oil, is it a 2 stroke??
Too Cool!
Wow. You've really cut the shaft short on both ends. I got a maytag engine kind of specifically for putting on a bike, but I don't think that I entirely want to cut the crankshaft short.
Nice
what kind of gasoline you use?
people will think "Holy hell, a motorcycle" and then you'll ride by.
is it for sale?
wats the top speed on that?
how many people lost their legs riding this bike?
@GayBoyRunning
Might have a rear drum brake, so no brake levers. Always safer to have a front brake as well but I don't think its brake-less.
i take it you dont have the original carby on there?
Wow!
How much oil did you use ?
They use 8 ounces of oil.
@antwnis16 prob just release the drive pulley off the tire and peddle backwards like any other bike with a hub brake
sweet
sweet rat bike nice jop, i like the sound of it
how many cycles are maytag engines?
Maytag engines are two stroke engines. They run off af a 16:1 fuel ratio. The fuel used is coleman camp fuel and straight 30 weight non detergent mineral based oil. So one gallon of camp fuel to 8 ounces of the oil.

@douro20 uh.. 25% oil? Its not a diesel engine is it? 2,5% is more like it.. And of course you dont use motor oil when two stroke oil is available.
@dezel66 yes
yup
Mad as a cut snake but I like it.
1:53 I wouldn't fancy having that belt flapping around like that right next to my leg.
Wow that's pretty cool, but I wouldn't want to get anything caught in the exposed moving parts ;-)
Well made your video.Your engine should have a exaust will help.
Exceedingly clever. Yer wife wants you to mow the lawn with it.
did you make this video for art class....
@antwnis16 Coaster, I assume....
@GayBoyRunning got a video of it? would love to see it
Hmm, Gives me an idea!
These old engines are very conservatively rated.
can that thing sew pant pockets ?
+brainsareus It's a Maytag, not a Singer.
Curby Weaver yeah,i know, but the joke still holds water......gabish?? IOW's, it still works..
Since those things are almost as gas efficient as mopeds and street legal I might make one with the Maytag model 92 I received.
Artsy video but I would like details
