I wish that their fine for this was to pay the equivalent amount that they paid for their kids to get into these universities to fund scholarships or provide student loan assistance. I mean their family alone would have to make a $500,000 dollar donation, so imagine when you factor in all of the other people who were involved.

Not entirely true, after 16 years of working together with a village in Ghana, it's not essentialy money that's needed in a raw form by giving people just money but infrastructure, education and help to help themselves. For example, we raised a lot of money to be able to build a school and pay a teacher, send children of the village to school and become a nurse, doctor, teacher and so on. Then build their own little hospital, with financial help yes but beforehand you needed people who could use the facility. The very first thing we did was built wells with clean water to improve the overall health of the people, just tossing money would not have helped them in the long term. Another thing was education in agriculture, paid by charity raised money but invested to raise their living standards by giving them more knowledge and be able to help themselves better on the long run. So I'm always kind of on the fence by saying just give money. Of course money is the main catalyst you need to change things but it should be wisely used to help get long term effects, not only short lived surface help

It's not fair that fine amounts are set in stone. A $500 fine could destroy one family's Christmas and be chump change to another family. I think there should be a set minimum amount, but when a wealthy person gets a fine it should be high enough for them to feel it financially, it should make them think twice and not want to do it again like it does for the rest of us. I think that's part of the problem. It's not so much that they think they're Above the Law, they just know they can afford to buy their way out of it, unlike most people

amanda (amandabb) said it, adrienne said it, pretty much every black girl not in the sunken place has said it: why did olivia jade feel the need to go to three black women for her redemption arc? she could have gone to anyone else, but she chose red table talk? why?
jada didn’t mention the fake rowing practice pictures and went way too easy on olivia jade, whereas she was tougher with jordyn woods. maybe because jada was projecting? maybe because we’re conditioned to be more “forgiving” to white women?
    i don’t know.
i have too many thoughts on this situation to properly and coherently articulate them right now.
EDIT: when i mentioned jada projecting, i was referring to both her class privilege and wanting to help her children in that way, and her “entanglement” with august alsina.
while the situation with jordyn woods and tristan thompson was different, i have to wonder if jada was harsher with her during her red table talk because it reminded jada of her own “entanglement” with august alsina. it’s different because tristan is a serial cheater while jada and will were separated when she entered a relationship with august.
i still have too many thoughts on this situation to properly and coherently articulate them, but i hope my clarification helps some.

  • @gpeaches

As someone with a PhD and intimate knowledge of the academy, the Olivia Jade situation reflects of the priorities of the COLLEGE. Institutions of education have become corporatized and they're about making money and having large endowments in order to make college ever more like an all inclusive resort, to appeal to more students and justify tuition hikes- and also in part to fund research. COLLEGE IS A BUSINESS, and it's focused on making money, securing grants and receiving funding and donations from wealthy alumni.
It is well documented that funding towards faculty and the quality of education have stagnated, while funding for gratuitous administrative positions and recreational programs for students have dramatically increased. Olivia Jade's parents took advantage of a broken college system that cares more about their endowments than producing highly competent graduates.
Not to mention that I've heard thousands of students talk about the appeal of parties and freedom, not the academics. Thats a common position. And seeing Olivia Jade get lectured on privilege by women who are incredibly privileged to have a large platform and an abundance of financial resources that places them in the top 1% is embarrassing and hypocritical. This obsession with privilege and admitting one's shame is in as much a trivial topic as Olivia's return. No one chose the position in which they were born, and lecturing individuals about their lack of guilt towards conditions they didn't chose is as unproductive as thinking the world cares about one's reputation.
Admitting one's privilege and playing the oppression olympics is not productive, it does not create a better society, it just strokes the egos of people who call out others for failing to "recognize their privilege" and the people who show performative guilt about their lucky circumstances. It's a shallow ego game that lacks nuance and does nothing to build a better society.
But I fully agree, the justice system is backwards and favours the wealthy who can afford better litigation. I don't feel bad for her parents who are serving time. But the colleges who put money before morals and education is ultimately to blame.

It’s normal for her to be upset about brand deals, but because that was the first thing she brought up and the thing she focused the most on, does in fact show that she learned little in this situation. If she actually was genuine about realizing her privilege she would’ve:
      a. did a formal apology on her own socials before going to the red table. Don’t you think it’s suspicious that she chose a place that she knew she’d recieve the most sympathy from? I say this because this show is know for redeeming celebs who’ve been through scandals
      b. She would’ve put more emphasis on how she negatively effected others, not on how her own actions took away a brand deal from herself. You even see this in the way she’s shocked when the interviewers actually call her out! Like she was surprised that they’d actually put accountability on her.
      c. She wouldn’t of put most of not all the accountability onto her parents, by saying shit like “I didn’t know it was bad”, like come on google exists if you have to fake posing for photos you should be somewhat suspicious on the motives.
