CZ Shadow 2 - Complete Review - The most popular Production handgun at USPSA production nationals

  • The CZ Shadow 2 has a very specific purpose to which it is very well suited - seeking alphas in IPSC and USPSA competition. Plenty of shooting footage of the Shadow 2 in it's natural environment - shredding alphas.
    The design of the gun makes shooting 9mm an absolute pleasure - those seeking a soft shooting range gun will not be dsiappointed. Pride in ownership will certainly be high - but I would encourage those looking for a high end range toy with an amazing single action trigger to consider a Tactical Sports - it has a better trigger out of the box, and a longer sight radius, and is approximately the same weight - and it's higher capacity. The Shadow 2 is really made for production division.

    I've always said 'it's the shooter not the pistol'.. but when my son and his Shadow 2 beat me and my G19 at the club shoot I had to reconsider. Thank you CZ for the retired military discount for the 'level up' and son #1 was two places behind at the last shoot .. Lovin this S2.

    Very informative! Definitely one of the best reviews on the Shadow 2 and some humorous comments as a bonus. Your comment, "the Shadow 2 delivers more than the price tag would indicate..." is very well said/received. I own both a Black/Blue and just recently added an Urban Gray to my CZ collection. I'm not much more than a casual weekend competitor these days but, I've owned 1911's that cost 2-3x the Shadow 2's price that only shot half as good and half as reliable until I performed the usual adjustments and fixes. By comparison, the Shadow 2 has been flawless: dead nuts on it straight out of the box and 100% reliable with every factory load I've fed it.

      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety

      it really is a top shelf value offering. A ton of features that in the 1911 world are costly upgrades included with the relatively low asking price. I am not competing in production at present but each time i go to the safe i handle them and am reminded how great they are

    I have owned my Shadow 2 for over a year now. With a chronograph and experimentation I have found the 124grn. Projectile my weapon loves and with over 1000 rounds thru the pipe it is breaking in nicely and all holes on the target are touching unless I fail And pull a shot. At first I wasn’t to impressed but as it wears in, I get more adjusted to it and Learn my tiring eyes to the optic sights I find myself picking this gun over my 20+ year old high end 1911 that all my buddies envied for years.

I don’t shoot comp either but this is the most pleasant, accurate gun I’ve ever shot or owned. I usually rotate shooting different guns every week but since this purchase I can’t get enough of it. Of 20 some hand guns this is the best shooting pistol I own. Period ! Mikey

      Per my buddy:
      czcams.com/channels/dQE_tyzBSZSk5wkWjSkZJg.html
      Slide to frame fit loosened up some over his match gun but accuracy is still strong. Slide stop broke, TRS broke, recommends a 10k interval of changing - same as the regular shadows. Basically a slide stop and springs every 10k and it should be good to go for a while.

    Great video. I shot an SP01 Accu for a couple of years then bought an Accu 2. The SP01 is a great gun, but the two is an improvement. Also, I had several minor issues with my SP01, but the Accu 2 has been perfect. It also doesn’t seem to require as much preventative maintenance. I shoot about 500 RDS a week and seemed to go through extractors and slide stops on the SP01. I finally started using a new extractor and slide stop for matches and ran my older ones to failure in practice. I’ve never had either part fail on my Accu 2. In fact I’m between jobs right now and money’s tight and I haven’t been doing any PMs on the gun, and it’s running great. I’m very surprised.
    BTW, I also shot GA State and it was really cool to see your head cam footage. It’s like going back in time.

    Excellent review and very informative. Thank you for taking the time to do prepare this. Let me suggest that you review the area of classical physics that deals with momentum exchange, specifically the role that mass plays and then rethink your narrative on recoil and why the heavier mass helps getting back on target.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety +2

      There's a lot going into what the sensation of recoil is and ammo is no small factor in that. The muzzle climb is mostly correlated to bore axis and less the weight of the frame - but sight recovery - getting the gun to settle down form recoil - is absolutely affected by the huge dust cover. Sights recovering to the same point is more a factor of ergos and technique than it is the mass of the gun - a lopsided grip will make the gun recover off center the point of aim. As far as energy going into your body in the form of recoil? seems like a rigid steel frame would impart more energy into your arms than something like polymer that would lose some of the energy due to the frame flexing and rebounding. I didn't notice a tremendous difference between training for 300-500 rounds with a plastic gun vs. a steel gun. One thing the heavy gun absolutely does is work as a crutch for guys who cannot drive the gun out of recoil with a squared away grip/stance - the dust cover makes it flop out of recoil - and more often than not that's what people are talking about.

  • @Suyamu
    @Suyamu Před 5 lety

    How does the trigger compare to the Shadow 1?
    I've recently had the chance to shoot a Shadow 2 and I fell in love, but that price tag is like 400 bucks more than a Shadow 1.
    Sadly I don't know anyone who owns a Shadow 1 to try and compare for myself, so I'm afraid if I just buy a Shadow 1 that I might feel disappointed with it after shooting the 2.
    Also as a fairly new sports-shooter and generally still being a bad shot I'm somewhat worried that If I get myself a race-gun for my first pistol instead of some kind of work-horse like a glock or cz 75b, that I might never properly learn to shoot a normal gun, with a mushier, heavier trigger pull and more felt recoil etc.
    Right now I have problems with shot anticipation with 9 mm pistols - those issues weren't there with the Shadow 2 (similar to shooting 38 special out of a heavy, long barrel revolver in single action). Any opinions on that? Better to start out with a cheaper service pistol and work my way up to a sports pistol?

    Great review! Have you changed out any of the internal springs to improve trigger pull yet? Sorry if you’ve already covered this.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes - I dropped in an extended firing pin from CZC with a reduced power FP spring and a reduced mainspring with 11# Recoil springs. The gun does shoot flatter with the lighter recoil spring. It dropped pull weight from 9/3.25 to 7.25/3. I'm actually going to do competition hammers on them as well. It's not because I think it's going to be a demonstrable improvement - just a level of confidence in my gear. At that point I'll be about as built up as the gun can relatively inexpensively be. The springs and pin - yes absolutely not a compelling reason not to. The comp hammer - it's an individual value call - I ultimately did to have complete confidence in my guns and no "shoulda woulda coulda" gear related stuff.

    OMG, great review! We love our Shadow 2. Question, can you start in USPSA in SA mode in limited div? It's hard for us to pull the DA plus without a decocker, could be a little nerve racking to drop the hammer.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 6 lety +3

      +CollierGunGirls in limited - yes you can start in SA. While the S2 is probably one of if not the best production guns, in limited it is outclassed by the tac sport for SA starts - as the safeties with the S2 aren’t really appropriate for SA - I would want a bigger ambi safety to guard against weak hand transitions and accidentally activating the safety. If you’ve got one and want to run limited you are on the hook for a magwell and potentially some safeties. As far as manually decocking - it is intimidating at first but it really isn’t hard to do. Maybe pull a projectile and dump the powder but leave the primer in and practice it with a primed case. If the primer pops it will make a loud noise but will not move the slide. Shooting 9MM is great but it’s tough to crack into the top in of limited doing it. If the goal is to have fun then I have no doubt you will succeed but limited is a playground for 40 S&W

    • @CollierGunGirls
      @CollierGunGirls Před 6 lety

      Thank you sir. That is a lot to take in. We're not worried about what class or how we place just yet. Need to get used to shooting 9mm in matches first. Finding the right gun is a big part of that. Thanks for getting back to us! We hope to start shooting big bore in matches next year.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 6 lety +4

      +CollierGunGirls bring whatever you have and shoot limited until you figure it out. Just grab an extended base pad/follower kit so you have the max rounds you can have - 140mm base plates. I would suspect that a lighter pistol would be welcome initially- many women prefer lighter guns (lighter meaning 30-36 oz) though Maria Guschina rocks a shadow 2 in production division and she was about 98.5% at world shoot 2017

    • @baghdadbitch

    Thank's for this excellent and very complete review. I tried the deuce only once a few months ago, but was immediately hooked. This pistol is in a class of it's own in my opinion. I'm going to order mine probably next week or so to get back into IPSC. On that matter what holster are you using ? I have to commend your draw and re holstering technique from what i've seen at the indoor range in your footage. It shows not only a good holster choice but a lot of serious practice as well. I've been a pistol instructor for ten years out of a thirty year career in law enforcement and i must say drawing and re holstering was often a problem with many of the officers i trained over the years. Not enough practice obviously, but in their defense here in my province officers only get to shoot once a year for their annual qualification very few are lucky enough to have one or two practices a year. Our government does not take police officer's firearms training nearly seriously enough. But that's another story for another day. Be well and god bless.

      Thanks for watching! The holsters I have used have been a couple - I used the Ghost Thunder holster - which I don't recommend - and I used the Red Hill Tactical dual layer - which is pretty good. I'd probably recommend getting a BladeTech OWB then heading over to Henry Holsters and buying a Turbo Drop and Turbo Prop. If you're lazy you can get a similar setup from the Ben Stoeger Pro Shop ready to go on his "Boss" hanger.

I'm hearing from some that the newest batch of s2's are hit and miss on getting the extended safety which for the guns intended purpose i don't really know why you would want it anyway. i did put a cgw spring kit and extended firing pin in mine i was thinking of adding the full kit, hammer etc but as you stated once you start shooting it at speed I'm not sure the trigger upgrades will be noticed. that cost could be applied to projectiles, powder and primers.

      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety

      I like the frames better on the Omega pistols unless you have a line on a 75B New. The grip tang and trigger guard relief are better. The trigger in the omega - in it's basic form - is a bit better than the typical 75Bs. If you use an aftermarket hammer and dress up the trigger on a 75B - it'll be a little nicer than a dressed up Omega - but not a ton. I wouldn't get the BD because I hate the shape of the BD style decockers.

    • @materccano1445
      @materccano1445 Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for your answer, so if I understod you well the cz75b frame if new is comperable with the 75b omega convertible frame, and a tuned cz75b triger will be better than a tuned omega convertible triger. And one last question, because of our gun market in Croatia and the poor choice in our gun stores we can mostly not hold a gun before buying it (most Guns have to be ordered first) the two models that i liked here is a cz75b, bd or omega convertible and the Springfield Armory XDM 4.5 9 mm, the only difference here is there is no Springfield Armory logo on it, because its derectly sold here and not over Springfield Armory, If you could have only one which would you buy. I know these are two totaly different gun types but I would be thankfull for any advice. I had a cz75b shadow, great gun but the design was not so great for me, the thick front part od the gun doesen't look to me as good as the thinner shape od the standard cz75b. And if I would have a shadow again it would be probebly the shadow 2 but the weight difference between a cz75b and shadow 2 is to me a lot.

      @@materccano1445 I shot CZ's for a long time - after I learned how to shoot double action and hold a gun still while pulling the trigger - it doesn't matter what platform I use. Initially the light SA and good ergos helped me with the accuracy stuff. Now, I'm shooting a glock 34 and I can do all the same things I could do with my shadow 2 after the initial adoption. That said - whichever one you like better is the answer. It's something you got to want to pick up and practice with - you have to like the idea of it or you'll eventually end up with both. With practice the advantages of one will evaporate and they're roughly the same. Me personally - I'd save the money (assuming the XD is cheaper) and go that route. Another one worth considering - I don't know availability in Croatia but the Grand Power X Calibur is a great one.

    I received my Shadow 2 (black/blue) about 2.5 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Although within the first 500 rounds I have had 2 FTE's where it fires a round, partially extracts the empty and the next round in the mag jams underneath the empty causing the slide to be out of battery. Removing the mag will either 1.) cause the empty to freely fall through the mag well or 2.) the slide will close chambering the empty case. I was heartbroken however this happened exclusively with Winchester white box 115gr. I recently changed the ammo to 147gr freedom rn and after about 400 rounds there have been no hang ups.

      Thinking on this - I'd start with losing the recoil buffer - it's compressing the spring a bit by being there making it try to close the slide harder when it's fully open - but you could get away with a 11# recoil spring just as well if you're not shooting self defense ammo - no problem.

      @@TheHumbleMarksman I really appreciate the advice man! At first I thought it was the extractor spring being weak that caused the extractor claw to slip over the round when the empty case was pulled 3/4 out. I broke down the gun and everything looks ok there. Tested the tension by pulling the barrel and putting a round up against the breech face and under the claw. Even while shaking the round was held tightly in place. I will be primarily running the 147gr rn from now on so hopefully the #11 will work. I do notice that racking the slide especially when the hammer is down gets really tough around the point where the empty gets stuck so removing that buffer seems logical.

      For pure shooting 9MM - it’s pretty strong. The thickened slide / frame and all that weight- fully loaded with 18 Russ of 9mm you are talking 50+ oz. For me- I would rather have a 75 based shadow without the rail. I haven’t tried- but I am not excited at the prospect of carrying one despite my obvious love for it. I carried a 1911 for about a year because I was stubborn and ultimately the muzzle was a bit too long and the prospect of the S2 reminds me too much of that. I am sure it can be done by someone who wants to carry the sidearm they are most effective with- but my effectiveness with a P01 or 75B isn’t a lot different for a wide swath of shooting challenges. Or maybe a P09...
      I have been carrying a 75B pretty happily for a while- I often think about snagging a Shadowline 75 or the Shadow Tac II - it’s the short dust cover shadow that comes with heinie straight 8’s. The shadow line 75 has the high power cuts like a 75B and the tac 2 has the SP01 slide.

Out of an SP01 shadow neither me or my buddy could tell a difference. From that point forward we used 124s. The 124s group a little tighter and are cheaper. Plus you get more projectiles per case- so order slightly less frequently. I stopped using Acme because their 124 profile had stupid short OAL in my old Shadows. I would look at a tactical sports model if that’s what you want to do. The Tac sport is the same frame as a Czechmate. Really I would say save up and get a Czechmate and don’t screw around. The Czechmate can be a sight tracking Tac sport with minor scoring

    Its always hilarious for me to see the differences about how people see guns. Most americans I hear think of the shadow 2 as a expensive pistol. Here in Germany you are only allowed to own a certain amount of pistols and most people are bullseye shooters, when I bought my CZ for 1100€ or 1250 USD everyone told me that I will have to get a more expensive and better pistol soon anyways. Most people that shoot multi distance here run guns upwards 3000€ or 3500USD

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety

      Difference being that from what I am told pistol ownership - especially IPSC- is a game of the elite basically in Europe. In the US we can own service guns and they are comparatively easy to come by. $5-600 USD is a standard price for a service gun so a gun retailing at $1100 is a premium. A 75B is about $540 right now.

    Loved the review, but your statement on the weight having no impact on muzzle flip/recoil was contradictory to what you said moments before.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety +2

      The muzzle climb is different from recoil - how hard the gun is hitting you in hand. It doesn't really hit you in hand any harder or softer than an SP-01 - there is a slight reduction in muzzle climb due to the extra relief in the grip tang and trigger guard, the sights do recover from recoil faster due to the extra weight of the thickened frame up front.
      Does that make sense?

    For a shooter with average or small size hands, do you think Lok grips would make the grip more agreeable?

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety

      LOK makes thin grips that are a similar profile to the aluminums but way more aggressive. I've used the bogie thins - but they are hands down the most aggressive (read: Painful after 300 rounds) . You could hit it with an emery board and take the sharpness out or look at the checkered versions

      TheHumbleMarksman that sounds like a plan. Great video and I learned a lot! I am toying with competing and it looks like the Shadow 2 is the right tool for the job.

      So since I made this video nearly 2 years ago - the landscape has changed a bunch. Carry Optics is coming on strong. I sold my shadow 2's to compete in CO. I'd point you toward Carry Optics if you are interested in competing.

    • @jonathanl2748
      @jonathanl2748 Před 5 lety

      TheHumbleMarksman have you done a video on that yet?

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety

      I picked up a cheap Glock 17 MOS to try the division with - when I found out I liked the division I got a Glock 34 gen 5 MOS FS to actually compete with - so if you look on my channel pretty much all the glock related content is around getting acclimated to the platform. There's not a " best" platform to go with for CO - the Glock 17/34, Walther Q5 or Q5SF, Sig X Five, or an old Smith & WEsson M&P CORE are all good choices. The P10F OR will eventually be a good choice but you still can't get stuff like co-witness irons. I have a video on "Why I quit shooting CZs" that the algorithim brought me a lot of hate with despite not being a "Glocks are better than CZ" video - simply explaining the switch.

      @stevailo Před 4 lety

      TheHumbleMarksman thanks, in Italy I think we only have IPSC, so I guess I’ll change only the grips. Also great review, one of the best I found, and definitely better than most of the big channels.

      USPSA.org or IDPA.com are the two major pistol games. What you see on my channel is mostly USPSA. There are a lot of videos here on the channel with comeptition tips

    If one is not into this level of shooting.. where edc is the norm... then the SIG 226 is the first choice.

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  Před 5 lety

      for a competition context - I disagree - i don't see spending basically the same money on a gun that doesn't handle recoil or have controls as conveniently placed. The shadow 2 is a race car. I don't know too many who actually EDC a 226 - those are big chunky guns in their own right.
