I am a disc golfer and Frisbee enthusiasts. I want so bad to teach our new Blue Heeler and pitish mix too be a disc dog. She is 8 months and has a drive to chase a roller but struggling with keeping her attention and bringing it back is the problem. Treats don't work but the running away idea was an eye opener. Gonna go give it a try. Thank you!

This training video has been super helpful with our 9 week old Goldendoodle. Before implementing the steps in this video, our little pup would take the toy and run off to a corner. Since she loves to chase us, we decided to take the advice in this video and run backward a few steps while calling out to her. It worked like a charm. She is getting to be reliable fetcher within 2 short days.
How do you fix them running to stop it and then leaving it there? I’ve tried everything! If treats are involved, she will obsess on treats. She returns 8/10 times in the house but outside zero interest in bringing it back. She comes back but empty handed.

Hi there, Alex! The exercise where Carol is using the rubber mat will help with that. You can also begin the exercise much closer to the fetch toy. The only way the game continues is when your dog brings the toy to you. Ask your pup to get their toy each time they leave it behind. If your dog likes to play tug, you can make that the focus of the game. If all of the value is on the big game of tug at the end, your dog will be sure to bring the toy back to you for the best part of the exercise! The Crafty Realtor what's your timing on presenting those rewards. I would put a lien on him just a short one. Your dog comes back you can step on the line. Make sure you say your release command before you present the treat.
my dog had the same problem and i found if i just held it not pull bc they think it’s tug of war but if you just hold it they start to let go as it’s boring for them and then as soon as they release throw for them to fetch and do it again, takes some time but they start to realise if they let go you play and if they don’t you don’t
@@lazygamer1301, it's easier IMO to present the same toy your dog fetched for you and then throw that one ....instead of using the treat. If you dog loves balls, Frisbee, small stuffed animals that is. Best way to teach fetch without a treat for toy loving dogs.
Excellent problem solving! Saving! I have a dog who runs off with the toy for a private party, but when food is used, the toy then has zero value. Sigh.

My dog just wants the frisbee in the air so he can catch it, and has no interest in it otherwise (tug of war, chase, etc). Great at catching, and comes back everytime, but usually without the frisbee. The first 10 minutes or so, I stand in the middle of field and do a long throw. He catches it and charges back dropping the frisbee prior to passing me as I throw in the opposite direction. I take 5 frisbees out with me and we do this first. Usually, we're out for about an 90 minutes 5 or 6 times a week with the last hour walking around the park with me tossing the frisbees ahead.
My boy Lance begs us to throw it, but doesn't want to let go (he loves tugging too, but I try to discourage that because sometimes he grabs my hand by accident) XD I finally figured out that I can get him to let me have it more easily by pulling my hand away when he re-grabs it. This wouldn't work for a dog who is possessive of it, or didn't really want me to throw it, so I don't recommend it for anyone else - but it works for him.
I’ve got a lab shepherd mix that drops the toy when we call her and runs back to us. Maybe the answer is a more stimulating toy? For now though I’m going to give that food truck a try and see if that helps.

my female German Sheppard loves to retrieve and she brings it back to me but she will not bring it back the extra few steps to lay it at my feet. I don't ever take the ball from her because I let her tell me when she is ready. Still though she does not lay it at my feet and tries to make me go to the ball even when she comes right to me she will walk away from me to put the ball down. I don't pick the ball up unless she walks away from it. So I put the tennis racket down like I am done and she will bring the ball to my feet. Should I bother trying to fix this or just let her have her way some.
I have a very stubborn Ridgeback and what do I do when I throw a toy and she looks at me like I’m crazy and walks away from me. I tried using the mat and she’s great at recall but I have never found a toy that she likes so I have never been able to do fetch with her
My Jack Russel mix is going on 15. She's mostly deaf at this point and her sight ain't so hot anymore either. The only thing she does anymore is fetch, but only in the house, she has never had any interest in toys while outside. Even though I used hand gestures for most of her commands it's almost like she never even knew them.
I feel like I’ve tried everything. I have a 6 month old full Aussie. I have tried starting small, throwing the toy a few feet but she refuses to get it. If I use a rope then she just wants to tug the rope and ignores the toy. Or she just waits for me to give her treats. If I try this w/ no treats, and toss the toy she runs after it, leaves it and runs back to me. She just will not bring it. And when she occasionally does it right, I try praising or giving her a treat and saying “yes” (her marker word) but she won’t do it again. I am lost! It’s the one thing I can’t train her to do. :(
i think this dog already had some idea on how to play fetch. i throw my pup a toy, he toddles to it plays with it for a moment and walks away to look at something else. i think 9 weeks is too young for fetch xD
My dog is weird, she always plays fetch perfectly with a ball, but she love frisbees and catches it and then fights with me and won’t give back the frisbee she becomes a different dog she’s so stimulated with the frisbee. Is there something I should do with the frisbee to get her to want to give it back like she does with the ball?
i think my dog Falls in an unfound category. When I tried the 2 toy option- She holds on to the first while still trying to chase the second. initial issue is she does not bring it back.

Hi, I have a 9 week old cocker spaniel puppy, we want to train her as a gundog, she will recall pretty well when not carrying anything, and will run out and find a ball, but.... she won't bring it back, she will come and "fly past" me. Not really keen on the idea of playing tug, given thatvthis may cause me problems in the future. So.... am I being too premature in worrying about this, is it something that's likely to resolve itself as she matures, or is there anything you could suggest ?
We adopted a rescue puppy, English Pointer/Pit Bull mix this summer. Your videos have helped so much. My problem with this is that she jumps and grabs the disc. She's caught my hand a couple times. I switched to using 2 toys and alternating. I don't even try to take it out of her mouth. She's tried to grab it when I pick it up off the ground. She just gets really over excited when playing fetch. I actually stopped using the disc and switched to another less stimulating toy. She needs the exercise/playtime but I don't know how to get her to be more gentle.
Hi! I've loved watching your videos! Unfortunately, we had a bad experience at a dog park so to exercise my dog we go to the lake and use a couple of sticks to trade out when playing fetch. Food has its value, but any other wild animal(ducks) or other dog and he's on alert and anxious. I'm working with an animal behaviorist here on his reactions but its been difficult with quarantine. Any suggestions?

And to build your relationship with him, I think Ken is releasing I new video in the next week i'm teaching your dog to go around an object. Great way for you to build confidence, relationship, exercise your dog and you don't need a large area. Once you have value on the behavior you can also move it to different locations to continue do you build confidence. We are also offering an online course on retrieving aunt introduction to disc dog
My 3 year old mini aussie is laser focused on running around and sniffing the ground the entire time that getting his attention is almost impossible. He'll want to play with the frisbee but when we throw it, he catches it but almost never brings it back. He doesn't care about any kind of treats while in the backyard so it's always frustrating. Any advice?
I like your method about two toys, however, if the dog isn't giving you the toy, he is going to run after the second toy still with the first toy in his mouth. That's what my dog does. He has a strong chase drive but he doesn't like to give me the toy. So after a few times of having to give the toy to me, he learns that returning means giving up the toy so he stops returning. In the case of the second toy, he also wants it so he'd rather hog both.
My sister's dog just don't give it back as he should - most of the time he will drop it somwhere relatively close and wait (hes a maniac about it) so you have to pick it up. Every try of forcing him to pass it directly to you will fail, he will dodge, go away. You can only stop him by the leash and take it from his mouth that way.
My puppy is good with fetching, but not all the time, sometimes he doesn't bring it back because he likes to be chased. I want to get angry with that behavior of his, but he's just too cute and funny if he does it.
What about a dog who absolutely loves the toy, but has such a perfect recall that when I call, she forgets about the toy and comes running. Even though the toy was SO fun, she values me more and suddenly she wants nothing to do with the toy. I've tried pointing at the toy, shaking it a little, even not calling her just running the other direction while she has it, but nope. If I'm in the picture, the toy is boring. Any tips? My plan is to try and teach and reward her for holding the toy in my presence. She's a smart German Shepherd so I think it'll work...
My dog runs after the toy, then he just wants to lay down in the grass and chew on it, if I call him and help him with the leash he runs towards me, but if I don’t reward him for coming towards me (he doesn’t come all the way) he just lays down again. And when I train like you did in the beginning he just picks up the toy and “throws it”. Or he picks it up and drops it straight away. What can I do?
awsumjulia some dogs naturally love to retrieve. Others don't. But all dogs can learn to love it. I would build greater value for interacting with you with the toy. So that coming back to you will be more fun then lying down and chewing on a toy. So try talking with him, moving the toy round and letting him chase it without actually throwing it. Praising him like crazy! I would build lots more value this way before I went back to retrieving.
Solution 1: she drops the toy and chases me 2: will leave first toy and obsesses on second one instead 3: plays with long line instead. 4: taught her place and she will go to place and no longer be interested in chasing the toy. I’m just getting up and ignoring her the minute she hogs the toy. lol. Wish me luck.

PerfectDenial30STM there are a number of things we can do. make sure you are interesting to come back to. When he has the toy takeoff and run so that he wants to chase you. As he gets close, now turn and face him. You can also try using your voice to encourage him in once he's close.
Hey! I've recently got a 4 year old husky and he really isnt food motivated at all. I know you've done a video on this topic but my issues go s little further. Ive tried a variety of treats with him and he will 80% of the time take the treat and spit it out and walk away. He will often even do a trick instead of taking the treats. When he does eat a treat it almost seems like hes only doing it because i want him to. Do you maybe have ways of training dogs without using treats and other ideas for what i could use as a food reward? Thanks in advance!
TheHunter absolutely. Food is only one of many rewards we can use to reinforce our dogs. Figure out what he really likes. Toys, chasing you, jumping up on you, tugging with you. I had a great Dane who is not interested in food. And wasn't hugely interested in toys. I did build value for both so that I had more options for training. But I also used things he more naturally loved. LOL. For him putting 2 feet up on a table was fun. He loved interacting with me. And I put his puppy burns on command. So a chance to run wildly he came an option as a reward. LOL. Inappropriate settings.
My seven year border collie lays down and chews his rubber Chuck it ball with pleasure like it’s a piece of gum after he catches it.Won’t go out in retrieve unless he is allowed to run ahead and have the opportunity to catch on it on a bounce. As he ages I worry about his joints as he is a big forty five pound guy.
I have a problem with my dog and dont know how to fix this. So my dog usually stays in his crate and I regularley I spend some time with and all the basic stuff and a month ago he starts peeing before im put on his belt and going out and it can happend that he stays in my room and spends time with me we play or I teach him something new he does nothing no peeing no pooing in my room or anny other place in the house but just when I want to put on his belt to go out he starts peeing and when its any other family member he doesn't do the same with them I can not understand this problem is it me?

I have been trying for 2 years now to teach my Whoodle to fetch and return the frisbee without any success. He loves to chase the frisbee but once he has it, he wants to return home with it instead of giving it back. He’s not food motivated, so even with treats, chicken, cheese or bacon, he doesn’t drop the frisbee or if he does, he does it at a distance far from me so I can’t grab it. If I put my hand on the frisbee, he will release on command, the problem is he never comes close enough for me to grab it. Like I said at the beginning of this tread, all he wants to do is take it back home. The only way I can play is at the fenced dog park, I can throw the Crosby and then corner him by the door where he always return (since he wants to go home with jt). What can I do? I tried the long rope also to teach him… He does it perfectly when on a lead, once it’s no longer around it’s neck I’m back at scare one! Help.

Ok great video, for dogs that are food driven.... Mine is obsessed with ball tug anything, so he Will run to get it, but when called to Bring it back he Will come up to about a meter away from me, then drop it. When i touch it he Will quickly pick it up and back away. Sitting in front and releasing or trade for good or other toy does not work🥴. If he comes and sits perfect he Will release no prob. But he doesn't come in close enough ...using a long line he knows he's got no options and Will work fine. No line out of 10 times he Will come ones and the other times are hell. I have literally tried everything. He gets posessive and all is lost. And no where on thé internet anybody takes on this problem...please help out here

my heeler has loved fetch since he was a baby. He races to get it and rushes to bring it back every single time. and once i tell him last one he will run straight to the door to go inside. Ilona Kovach definitely not a shock collar. I do a lot of traveling and my one dog is deaf. Thorpe. So to be safe, Each of them has a tracking collar. If they were to get separated from me or if I was to be in an accident your location can be tracked through cell and GPS.

after watching this video. Trying to teach Ollie ( 3 year old corgi ) to fetch.h He gets more interested in the treat than his toy. What should I do?
I feel like I’ve tried everything. I have a 6 month old full Aussie. I have tried starting small, throwing the toy a few feet but she refuses to get it. If I use a rope then she just wants to tug the rope and ignores the toy. Or she just waits for me to give her treats. If I try this w/ no treats, and toss the toy she runs after it, leaves it and runs back to me. She just will not bring it. And when she occasionally does it right, I try praising or giving her a treat and saying “yes” (her marker word) but she won’t do it again. I am lost! It’s the one thing I can’t train her to do. :(

My dog is weird, she always plays fetch perfectly with a ball, but she love frisbees and catches it and then fights with me and won’t give back the frisbee she becomes a different dog she’s so stimulated with the frisbee. Is there something I should do with the frisbee to get her to want to give it back like she does with the ball?
i think my dog Falls in an unfound category. When I tried the 2 toy option- She holds on to the first while still trying to chase the second. initial issue is she does not bring it back.

Hi, I have a 9 week old cocker spaniel puppy, we want to train her as a gundog, she will recall pretty well when not carrying anything, and will run out and find a ball, but.... she won't bring it back, she will come and "fly past" me.
Not really keen on the idea of playing tug, given thatvthis may cause me problems in the future.
So.... am I being too premature in worrying about this, is it something that's likely to resolve itself as she matures, or is there anything you could suggest ?
We adopted a rescue puppy, English Pointer/Pit Bull mix this summer. Your videos have helped so much. My problem with this is that she jumps and grabs the disc. She's caught my hand a couple times. I switched to using 2 toys and alternating. I don't even try to take it out of her mouth. She's tried to grab it when I pick it up off the ground. She just gets really over excited when playing fetch. I actually stopped using the disc and switched to another less stimulating toy. She needs the exercise/playtime but I don't know how to get her to be more gentle.
You really need to hire a dog trainer. Pit bulls are aggressive by nature
Hi! I've loved watching your videos! Unfortunately, we had a bad experience at a dog park so to exercise my dog we go to the lake and use a couple of sticks to trade out when playing fetch. Food has its value, but any other wild animal(ducks) or other dog and he's on alert and anxious. I'm working with an animal behaviorist here on his reactions but its been difficult with quarantine. Any suggestions?

And to build your relationship with him, I think Ken is releasing I new video in the next week i'm teaching your dog to go around an object. Great way for you to build confidence, relationship, exercise your dog and you don't need a large area. My 3 year old mini aussie is laser focused on running around and sniffing the ground the entire time that getting his attention is almost impossible. He'll want to play with the frisbee but when we throw it, he catches it but almost never brings it back. He doesn't care about any kind of treats while in the backyard so it's always frustrating. Any advice?
I like your method about two toys, however, if the dog isn't giving you the toy, he is going to run after the second toy still with the first toy in his mouth. That's what my dog does. He has a strong chase drive but he doesn't like to give me the toy. So after a few times of having to give the toy to me, he learns that returning means giving up the toy so he stops returning. In the case of the second toy, he also wants it so he'd rather hog both.
My sister's dog just don't give it back as he should - most of the time he will drop it somwhere relatively close and wait (hes a maniac about it) so you have to pick it up. Every try of forcing him to pass it directly to you will fail, he will dodge, go away. You can only stop him by the leash and take it from his mouth that way.
My dogs chases the ball, fetches it, then drops it and sits next to it😅. 5he long line sounds good.
My puppy is good with fetching, but not all the time, sometimes he doesn't bring it back because he likes to be chased. I want to get angry with that behavior of his, but he's just too cute and funny if he does it.
What about a dog who absolutely loves the toy, but has such a perfect recall that when I call, she forgets about the toy and comes running. Even though the toy was SO fun, she values me more and suddenly she wants nothing to do with the toy. I've tried pointing at the toy, shaking it a little, even not calling her just running the other direction while she has it, but nope. If I'm in the picture, the toy is boring. Any tips? My plan is to try and teach and reward her for holding the toy in my presence. She's a smart German Shepherd so I think it'll work...
My dog runs after the toy, then he just wants to lay down in the grass and chew on it, if I call him and help him with the leash he runs towards me, but if I don’t reward him for coming towards me (he doesn’t come all the way) he just lays down again. And when I train like you did in the beginning he just picks up the toy and “throws it”. Or he picks it up and drops it straight away. What can I do?
awsumjulia some dogs naturally love to retrieve. Others don't. But all dogs can learn to love it. I would build greater value for interacting with you with the toy. So that coming back to you will be more fun then lying down and chewing on a toy. So try talking with him, moving the toy round and letting him chase it without actually throwing it. Praising him like crazy! I would build lots more value this way before I went back to retrieving.

3: plays with long line instead.
4: taught her place and she will go to place and no longer be interested in chasing the toy.

My dog comes near me but not all the way back with his ball and if i call him or offer treats or try to get him to chase he gets overstimulated and leaves the ball and if i tell him to get the ball he starts eating grass around the ball

PerfectDenial30STM there are a number of things we can do. make sure you are interesting to come back to. When he has the toy takeoff and run so that he wants to chase you. As he gets close, now turn and face him. You can also try using your voice to encourage him in once he's close.
Hey! I've recently got a 4 year old husky and he really isnt food motivated at all. I know you've done a video on this topic but my issues go s little further. Ive tried a variety of treats with him and he will 80% of the time take the treat and spit it out and walk away. He will often even do a trick instead of taking the treats. When he does eat a treat it almost seems like hes only doing it because i want him to. Do you maybe have ways of training dogs without using treats and other ideas for what i could use as a food reward? Thanks in advance!
TheHunter absolutely. Food is only one of many rewards we can use to reinforce our dogs. Figure out what he really likes. Toys, chasing you, jumping up on you, tugging with you. I had a great Dane who is not interested in food. And wasn't hugely interested in toys. I did build value for both so that I had more options for training. But I also used things he more naturally loved. LOL. For him putting 2 feet up on a table was fun. He loved interacting with me. And I put his puppy burns on command. So a chance to run wildly he came an option as a reward. LOL. Inappropriate settings.
My seven year border collie lays down and chews his rubber Chuck it ball with pleasure like it’s a piece of gum after he catches it.Won’t go out in retrieve unless he is allowed to run ahead and have the opportunity to catch on it on a bounce. As he ages I worry about his joints as he is a big forty five pound guy.
I have a problem with my dog and dont know how to fix this. So my dog usually stays in his crate and I regularley I spend some time with and all the basic stuff and a month ago he starts peeing before im put on his belt and going out and it can happend that he stays in my room and spends time with me we play or I teach him something new he does nothing no peeing no pooing in my room or anny other place in the house but just when I want to put on his belt to go out he starts peeing and when its any other family member he doesn't do the same with them I can not understand this problem is it me?
I tried the treat method and that worked but my dog has more interest in the toy so she stopped playing fetch and would just attempt to play keep away. I tried a second toy, nope. I have been trying for 2 years now to teach my Whoodle to fetch and return the frisbee without any success. He loves to chase the frisbee but once he has it, he wants to return home with it instead of giving it back. He’s not food motivated, so even with treats, chicken, cheese or bacon, he doesn’t drop the frisbee or if he does, he does it at a distance far from me so I can’t grab it. If I put my hand on the frisbee, he will release on command, the problem is he never comes close enough for me to grab it. Like I said at the beginning of this tread, all he wants to do is take it back home. The only way I can play is at the fenced dog park, I can throw the Crosby and then corner him by the door where he always return (since he wants to go home with jt). What can I do? Ok great video, for dogs that are food driven.... Mine is obsessed with ball tug anything, so he Will run to get it, but when called to Bring it back he Will come up to about a meter away from me, then drop it. When i touch it he Will quickly pick it up and back away. Sitting in front and releasing or trade for good or other toy does not work🥴. If he comes and sits perfect he Will release no prob. But he doesn't come in close enough ...using a long line he knows he's got no options and Will work fine. No line out of 10 times he Will come ones and the other times are hell. I have literally tried everything. He gets posessive and all is lost. And no where on thé internet anybody takes on this problem...please help out here

my heeler has loved fetch since he was a baby. He races to get it and rushes to bring it back every single time. and once i tell him last one he will run straight to the door to go inside. My only problem is he is so exited he will literally run into me while bringing it back. Ill have to stick my foot out so he veers away a little bit to the side. Also he almost chomps in a way while hes trying to hand it to me. Which makes it harder to grab it. Any tips?

Ilona Kovach definitely not a shock collar. I do a lot of traveling and my one dog is deaf. Thorpe. So to be safe, Each of them has a tracking collar. If they were to get separated from me or if I was to be in an accident your location can be tracked through cell and GPS.
