McCannDogs I have a toy poodle at 3 months she weighs 3lbs. She eats 1/4 of a cup well. One day I had 1/2 cup, and most of it was left. I am assuming 1/4 is enough by her indications. What do you think am I giving her enough? The drop it command I just stand there like a dumb piece of board then she lets go. Then I praise her up, and down. Sometimes she drops it right in front without saying anything. She loves toys I say more than the ball for now anyway. For 3 months she knows sit, down, watch me, and she goes gets the toy; and brings it back. She is pretty smart for 3 months. She also knows I have a bag of treats on the table she has sat looked up, and barked cause she knew there was treats on the table.
My dog was well behaved until I started showing him your videos. Now he learned that he was being a good boy for free and is demanding treats to do anything, or else he will call PETA.
THANK YOU for this video. My 11 week old australian shepherd has learn to "let go" using your training method. I was blown away! Your methods are simple and easy to replicate. Now I'm off to watch the "no biting" training video.

Yeah this channel is a secret treasure trove full of excellent advice. I love it how fun they make the training look, and its a bit intimidating at the same moment for a beginner pro trainer like me to see how much work I still have to do but hey, if it will be at least 25% this fun im all in for it and cant wait to do it. While training my own dogs is super fun and very rewarding training other dogs is a very different pair of shoes.
This worked for us in one session with my 9 week labradoodle! I was blown away!! Good teaching, good bless!
The best way to get this right is to start training the minute the puppy comes home. Everything from sit and down to crate training to drop/leave it, etc.
Don’t wait until it becomes an issue.

Its great if u get a puppy from day 1. But many rescues come with no previous training and a previous lazy owner.
Dan, you are SOOO right! I've been watching this channel and a couple others for about 3 weeks. We brought our puppy home Sunday and 8 have felt so prepared. My husband and I had 2 dogs before we had children and they both passed away in 2020. We finally decided it was time to bring another pup into our family and I finally feel like I'm doing things the right way! I've learned so much from this channel and feel like a pro at 2 days in!
@@sw-xy2so you can still start consistent, rewards based training with untrained rescues too, the method is the same!
Setting the expectations and setting up for success, and not over estimating our dogs is our role as their guardian. If they never learned drop it before, it takes patience, understanding, repeated training session, consistency with rewards, compassion with self and dog when mistakes are made, and always a laugh at the end of the day and we know we can always practice and grow along with our dog. Practising that timing with a rescue especially who needs a LOT of repetitions to unlearn old patterns and learn new cues gives us a chance to hone our skills at teaching a new cue/skill. Consistent calm CUE, pause, REWARD just as Kayl demonstrates here with a puppy - any aged dog can learn this way Drop It, or any other behaviour we want to shape/cue! Good luck with your rescue, they rescue us as well teaching humility and understanding :)

My dog eventually learned that if it acts like a bozo and picks up stuff he’s not supposed to, I’ll say drop it and he’ll get a treat after lol I’ve been outsmarted.

What you do is just don’t give a treat ever time u ask them to do something! Only give a treat every other time, use praise other times and nice tones of your voice saying good boy or wtvr haha :)

The 'switch toys' tactic is great, tx. It seems we stopped the treat switch too soon and now our 8mo zuchon never drops anymore and it's so frustrating when I want to play with her. We still use the inside short leash -one of the best pcs of advice we've got from your vids.
I know you guys hear this all the time, but you are amazing. We recently adopted a 3 month old rescue pup. I haven’t had a dog in years, so I was nervous. I prepared myself, my kids, and my hubby (who honestly needs more training 😉) by watching your videos. With lots of patience and consistency, in a week’s time, Yogi is sleeping through the night in his crate, following a couple commands, and only had one potty accident. (On a rainy day). All your videos are fantastic. They are clear, detailed and really give a sense of why you're doing what you do. One of the first things I teach my pups is to 'leave it'. Covers all sorts of problems, eating rubbish, resource guarding, puppy chewing. Using this command, they can be taught not to accept 'treats Also makes dogs safer from eating toxic substances.
Just bought a dog at 8 months who had to be re-homed and she hasn’t been able to drop for weeks now, and within 10 minutes of using this video, boom, she now drops, Thankyou very much, will be following more videos for sure

Our 2yo gsd mix LOVES to play "catch me if you can" with my kids. Mastering "drop it" and "all done" early on really helped us keep this fun, silly game without it becoming a problem. That said, every game of fetch devolves into "catch me if you can" 🤣

I like that you allow the puppy to be a puppy. So many people I've seen, try and make a puppy behave like a calm adult dog. NO! Let them be a puppy. Enjoy the time. You need patience, but there's nothing more fun than a puppy.

After my mani-pedi -two days ago- I noticed a sign on a telephone pole.
It said- Labradoodle puppies-6 weeks old… and a phone number.
I called it as soon as I got home, after talking to my partner… (he loves dogs!) about going to see these puppies. The lady said she had 1 male and 2 females left.
We drove over to see the puppies- and I fell in love with this little girl-(the runt of the litter)
I'm trying these tips with my puppy and they are helping so much! Especially swapping out one toy for another! I adore all of your videos and consider them my puppy bible! Haha

This is one of the most useful commands, I find. I can have my boy 'drop' instantly, from however far away starting with this basic method. He doesn't think that he needs to hold on to whatever he's got, because he wouldn't get anything in return, whether it's a treat, another toy, or knowing that I'm pleased by his obedience.
…The next step was teaching him to drop because of something I know is dangerous for him to have. He really appreciates knowing why I want him to drop something, even if he doesn't need to know. This prevents him from doing any last cursory swallows before dropping.

Thanx for showing how well the treat reward system works. That's what I do with my dogs as well. I always say that we as humans don't want to work for free... If you have dogs like mine, it's pretty easy: they do anything for food... 💚🐕❤🐕

its so annoying how most vids are with already trained dogs. this is the first vid i have seen that addresses how many times to say the command. i never knew if i should wait or keep saying it because every dog in other vids are already trained.

As a side question- I notice that in your videos, you seem to favor the large white nylabone type of bone. Do you feel like this is the safest bone option out there? I can’t tell you how many horror stories I have read on Amazon reviews re: nylabones and intestinal blockages, etc. I am so skittish about buying ANY bones at this point. So - just curious what your “top recommendation” for a teething bone is. Thanks!!
I think you're thinking of rawhide bones that can choke the dog. Nylabone can leave sharp points on after chewing it so best puppies are never left alone with them but much safer than rawhide

A coworker's Lab ate all of the candy in Easter baskets and the ham while the family was at church. They were having company and ended up ordering pizza since the dog got up on the counter and ate Easter! BTW, she [dog] survived eating chocolate bunnies and all of the food without an emergency trip to the vet! Love your videos and hope you can help me train my next GOOFY standard poodle pup.

I love this and watched most of your videos, I get the idea of teaching the "drop it" with the swap. My question is, if they pick up a household item they shouldn't have such as a kids toy which they may see as very high value. If we use a swap will that not condition the dog to pick things up to invoke play?

Bless you for making these videos. I've never owned a dog nor have I ever wanted one. But my daughter is getting a puppy in a week and I need to know what to do when she gets her since I'll be the one watching her while my daughter is at work. I've watched several of your videos so far and I LOVE THEM. I wish my kids were this easy to "train."
Don't be fooled. You're going to need extraordinary patience. These videos are sometimes helpful, but don't always work because sometimes these puppies have been trained already. So be prepared for your training to not go this smooth. For example, your daughter's puppy will probably be going for the bait bag once you pull out a treat. They learn very quickly where the food is. Your pup may listen to commands in the house, but once outside all bets are off. Outside training to "drop it" is WAY harder, especially if they try to eat EVERYTHING. Again, you're going to need extraordinary patience.

My energitic eight weeks puppy was a little shy on the first two days, and then started putting everything in his mouth since the third day. I found that when having rewards in my hands, my dog tends to react well on the command but she is so smart that when she knows there are no rewards around, she doesn't respond to my command, not sure if this happens to others or not.
I need to work on this with my hyper lab. ; ) Like to see like minded dogs in videos even if more advanced than mine. Thank you.

My puppy after seeing food get lot excited and out of control, how to solve this ?
For my dogs I’ve used the commands “give”, to give me something and “leave it” to stop going for something or someone. There’s also “off” to get down off of something (bed, couch etc), along with the common “sit”, “come” , “down” , “stay”, and “heel”. Our dog trainer said one word commands, where possible, are better. For some reason they also said only use their name with the “come” command. Maybe so it’s more likely to grab their attention?

My Golden Retriever has the Golden part down but not the Retriever part.
My Border Collie pup gets way too distracted when I have treats and without it she and the Goldie are not motivated at all. Lots of work for me, my Yorky and my Jack Russel were quick in learning retrieve but these two ladies are making me work for it, hence the reason I'm here. They are super loveable but oh so stubborn.

What kind of training treats do you guys use and or recommend? I'll be getting my border collie puppy in a couple more weeks. The end of January to be exact.
My puppy got “leave it” with chicken or ham inside the house very well, but he was finding things in the garden that were just too interesting for him to listen to me for. These were some good tips though so I’m ready to try again tomorrow!

Love this video! Do you have one specifically on puppies resource guarding? My 6 month old black lab puppy bit my daughter’s hand pretty bad while he was chewing is Kong toy 🙈 He sometimes growls if the kids get too close to him while he eats his meal too.

wish i had this when my dog was a pup. now he's 2 and a half years old, he does sometimes leave things on command but not 100% (unless we're on a walk). definitely loves the catch me if you can game, i've tried to teach him out of it but rest of my family continues chasing if he takes something, so my attempts aren't really working lol

Can you teach how to whin off the treat? If I go a few commands without giving my dog a treat, she won’t obey me anymore bc she knows I got nothing 😂 I want her to be obedient and answer to commands without any 🥩 coming her way!
My new rescue was terrible for not wanting to release and I didn’t want to make it worse with playing tug to release it. My fix was easy, he
Likes to play fetch but not releasing. I had several balls, throw one, he brings it back but won’t release but wants to play fetch more so, I don’t throw another ball until he drops first one. I can throw 100 balls and he brings them back and drops straight away so I can throw next one. No treats required.
Similar situation with a frisbee. You want to play/catch the second frisbee? You have to drop the other one first. Of course, my guy tried his best to caych a second one in his mouth. But pretty soon he learned that "drop it" gets rewarded by a second frisbee he can catch (or with a treat at the end of the session)
Great video wish I had seen this before. It takes lots of attention and time in training to get things back when asking to drop it. Yes I use a leash most of the time but not all the time now that she's a year old but have gone back to it if I don't feel good that day and I don't want to put all my energy into dealing with her misbehaving. My concern is she shows a growl and has done this when she was a pup when she stole something like a garden glove or something she could get hurt with but I continued to take it from her even when she showed me that look in her eyes. She's a loveable dog loves me to death so I have complete trust in her but..... When we play fetch she's brings everything we play with back and drops it on command and yes I have treats for her but not all the time do I give her treats. Problem is with new things she likes to take either inside or outside. I'm so glad I found this video I understand now how important it is to heaving that leash on her. In fact one day while on a longer leash while outside the fence in the yard I had tied her to the post showed her she couldn't go any farther when she saw something and started to run and it stopped her in her tracks and she yelped and since that day while on that particular rope she won't move till I tell her to come or I hold on to it while walking. Thanks again and I will continue to be one step ahead till I see she's totally under my commands. I'm 72 very active still thank God and play with her every day inside and outside and she's now a year old. My other problem is she gets soooo excited when she see's someone or if we're away and she jumps up wanting that affection attention. Hope to find one of your videos that will help me with that. Thanks again.....

We adopted a 3 year old pittie mix last month. We want to teach her to drop it. Does this typically work for dogs that have a few years under their belt of chase me behavior?
I use this method on my 9 week Boston Terrier. It has decent results. Even when he's not that interested in the treat he still starting to drop because he knows I'll reward him with a throw and another tug when he returns
I love your videos... step-by-step it all makes sense. I wonder... would I be able to teach my 2 year old German Shepherd? Will it just take longer? She wasn't trained much as a puppy with different owners... She's well-behaved but untrained ...
Have same issue with 4 month old lab pup. Big time chewer/biter. I keep him on a leash 60% of the time inside our home. When in the back yard and not on a leash. He immediately always goes to grab some mulch, grass, leaves, and branches off the ground. And I of course try to get it out of his mouth so he wont eat or choke on that stuff. But, he runs away and there I am chasing him around the yard. He's fricken quick too! Hope I can learn to train him not to do these things but seems nothing I'm trying is working out...
Until you have 100% success 100% of the time, keep that house line and long line on while training! It will only benefit you and your pup in your training sessions.
