Colt introduced the Delta Elite in 1987 to take advantage of the hype and publicity surrounding the 10mm Auto cartridge in the Bren Ten pistol. When the Bren Ten became such an ignominious failure, it left Colt in an excellent position as one of the first companies to actually have a viable offering in the caliber. However, the gun never sold particularly well despite its cult following, and it was removed form production in 1996 because of poor sales. It was reintroduced by Coly in 2009 with a few incremental improvements, and remains available today.
Mechanically, the Delta Elite is basically identical to the standard Series 80 1911. It has a polymer guide rod and recoil buffer, along with a set of dual nested recoil springs to handle the more powerful cartridge. It was a reasonable reliably and durable pistol in stock form with stock ammunition, but suffered from reputation problems because of owners who enthusiastically tried to load and shoot the most powerful ammunition they could find, in pursuit of maximum power.

"cant crack something that isnt there" - Big Brain Think Tank Time at Colt
Good engineers remove material where the Almighty tells them to.
Lol. Kinda like drilling a tiny hole at the end of a crack in a windshield.
@@jacktingle215 The Muse.
@@jacktingle215 Does the full size EAA Tanfoglio polymer frame Witness (Force) 10 have that same slide-rail cracking issue?
It's true, I learnt this in a solid mechanics course during my PhD. Cracks grow because stress is concentrated at the tip. If you make a rounded hole instead, the stress in the material is lower, and the hole does not grow.

@@NareshSinghOctagon now that you've seen the BB gun, let us introduce the CC gun

That sounds so bad ass lol
"It cracked there. So let's just cut out that section, then it can't crack there."
Not gonna lie, that sounds like a no-shit, live-action, real-world version of the "Modern problems require modern solutions" meme. I'm so glad it actually worked out in this case
Actually it's a widely used engineering solution, it changes the stress distribution. If you do it correctly the stress concentrations will be on areas better able to take the stress. In fact it's more effective than reinforcing a section in alot of applications as the reinforcement often leads to a greater stress concentration in the reinforced sections.
Nice to know I'm not the only one that thought this.
whoever invented engineering was a wild man
@@deathtdowAbsolutely correct. We can now achieve that relatively easily with computer simulations, as well being able to use generative designs so that such stress concentrations do not happen in the first place (see Czinger 21c for an example).
In the past though, it took a lot of imagination and priceless years of experience to be able to roughly visualize stress distributions. Those people were the aerodynamicists of the mechanical world. Some people can see air, others can see stress distribution.
But even today, people with mechanical engineering degrees, people who should know better, some still believe that a solid, homogenous piece of metal (for whatever purpose) will always be better than one with holes or otherwise removed material. To that I always give the example of engine conrods. By removing material at the bottom center of the beam, the load will be much more evenly distributed to the big end bearing, rather than having most of the load going right to the middle of it (see Cosworth CA2010 F1 conrod for a great example).

Going to have to take you all back to Sunday school. Your theology is flawed. Gun Jesus would never forbid hand canoneering. He merely stated that if you were to do it, get a Grizzly or Automag or some such. 1911s should be cherished and respected as the holy relics that they are and fed only proper ammunition.
REMEMBER YE NOT the gospel of Saint John the Browning?? FOR IT IS WRITTEN in the first chapter of his gospel:
1 In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."
2 "And shouldst thou muck with it, and hang all manner of foul implements upon it, and profane its internal parts, thou shalt surely have malfunctions, and in the midst of battle thou shalt surely come to harm."

I bought my Delta Elite in ‘93. Best damn hand gun I own! I’ve got 1911 40’s & 45’s but nothing compares to the accuracy of my 10 using 180 grain hp’s. It is well balanced and with custom grips fits the hand perfect. If you’re looking for a great 10, I highly recommend the Colt Delta Elite.
I remember being at the local store a few years after the 10mm was introduced and somebody was inquiring about a Delta Elite, the person behind the counter pulled out three damaged Elites that had been brought in for repairs. They were surprised that the "1911 platform" couldn't handle the load as it was considered a pretty tough gun. "It just can't handle the pressure." I kept talking to the guy because we had briefly met previously and spend an hour or two talking about guns, I'll mention this to him tonight as he's been a good friend over the years.
Colt doesn't make any 1911s with cast slides or frames; who's "they"?
First gun that I ever saw blow up was Delta Elite using factory ammunition. A chunk of the slide missed my face by inches. The guy standing next to me shooting it was not hurt, thankfully. I avoided buying a 10mm for years after that. When I did, I purchased a Glock 20. It KB’d in my hand with less than 200 rounds through it. I gave up on the 10mm and just stick with my .44 Mag revolver if I ever need to stop a T-Rex hiding behind the ‘fridge. BTW - the Glock incident was due to a case blowout. The Glock was repaired on site and was shooting in less than 15 minutes. I was impressed. I later modified that Glock with a new barrel giving better support to the cartridge, a heavier spring and guide rod, and titanium pins. The guy that got it has one heck of a nice pistol. My inability to use it afterwards was mental and not the fault of the pistol. Also, the round that blew was a very moderate load. The case had been over stressed by resizing due to the excessive bulging with the unsupported chamber. The length of the bulge also indicated that the case was still under a good deal of pressure while extracting. This was combined with that ammunition manufacturer being known for having pretty hard brass in the first place. Fired cases using the new barrel had 2/3 less expansion than with the original barrel. In case anyone wonders, I spent most of my 35 year career in the nuclear industry performing equipment failure analysis, so I am pretty sure of the failure cause.
No, they do not cast the slide or the frame.
@Matthew Caughey ha! Internet bs.
Added 24 pound recoil spring to mine. No problems in firing 135 to 200 grains
.try brownells
You can't get a crack if you have nothing to crack there... Now that is a logic sounds like something from the Simpsons.
haha, yeah, really the idea is to let the frame bend a few thousandths of an inch and be totally operable than have a crack and render the gun useless, but it does sound pretty goofy at first blush.
It’s more or less the same principal as a expansion joint on pipe
It just works, Todd Howard
Similar to the fix, the best way to stop a crack is to drill a tiny hole at the end of the crack.
Stops the crack from progressing and will probably permanently protect the part as the concentrated stress point is gone.

That thing is badass. Still looking sharp and tactical 30yrs later.
"Hand cannoneering" is officially my favorite phrase.
The Delta Gold Cup has a skeletonized trigger and fully adjustable rear sight. Some magazines have the delta elite logo. Thanks for the memories. I was a teen gun aficianodo working in a local gun / sporting goods store in 1987. I still remember being starry eyed as I opened the box on the first Delta Elite that the store received.
Lol, "hand cannoneering" brings back memories. My dad had a Ruger .41 magnum and used to always load his rounds right to the edge. As a kid we had a Ruger Single Six .22 to learn on and occasionally dad would let us fire a few out of the .41... The roar and recoil was something to behold. When I took over the reloading equipment when he got older, I made some middle of the road rounds. He agreed they were much more pleasant to shoot and he said "yea I always had to tighten the screws back down after shooting the full loads..."
Did Dad have one in .30 carbine as well? I read somewhere that .30 carbine could be hand loaded for a Ruger 6 gun to levels comparable to .30 30.

Are there any ships that actually have meter guns?
@@exratic5908 the Germans produced a couple of 800mm+ railway guns, using two parallel tracks. Used at Sevastopol
I like my 12.7 too
All the mainland European naval guns were made as metrics, like the German 380mm guns on the Bismarck, tirpitz, gneisenau. The French did the same think with the 380mm guns on the Jean Bart. 380mm is equal to roughly 15 inch guns, so actually smaller than the American guns of the time, even though everyone claimed the Bismarck was some scary monster. The only reason the British had such problems with it was because they hadn't caught up with the U.S. on naval technology, in both battleships and carriers.
@@danielburnette9552 False.
They had such trouble with the Bismarck because they fought it with a Battleship that was unfinished and a Battleship that was outdated and hadn't been modernised.
Those slide rail cutouts remind me of how guys would stopdrill cracks in early .45 Commanders... I've seen a lot of slide stop holes with hairline fractures in the "Coltalloy."
The 1911 was not engineered around lightweight alloys or high pressure cartridges. It beats itself up.
In the defense of the commanders, they were designed for 1950’s/60’s era 9mm. Not modern day self defense ammo.
10mm is absolutely less prominent as a carrtridge size compared to 9mm or .38 when it comes to pistols. Untill a couple of years ago I did not even know it existed. Packing higher firepower in a frame that is not exactly made for it and then gowing for a bigger boom is definately risky but I can see the appeal just to have a big sidearm you can fire so often.
Also handcannoneering sounds like an awesome hobby to have.
Fans of cyberpunk literature have known about it for decades, Fallout added to the popularity, but FO3 just merely extended that a bit further.

This was my first handgun. Got it 37 years ago. Other than Colt custom shop grips, it is still in stock form today. Carried it a ton. Very accurate and easy to shoot well.
Bought mine in 87 stainless.
Dude, bought my Gold Cup National Match thirty-five years ago at a sporting goods shop on my way home from work. I just got a Bianchi Agent holster like I had forty years ago. The delta logo is definitely cool…badasss. I had a Glock 20 also and that was nice, but the Colt is slim and when you feel it you know.
I bought my DE new in 1987. A minor correction-mine came with a magazine with traditional welded construction and it only holds seven rounds. I subsequently bought a later factory magazine with removable follower, as seen in this video, and it holds eight rounds. I don’t think anybody makes a nine-round magazine.
The Delta Elite is simply awesome. I load mine with original-spec handloads, not the watered-down .40 S&W stuff that became popular for awhile, nor do I try to increase power beyond design limitations. I use a Wilson Shok-buff system with full-length guide rod, and just had to replace a buffer for the first time as the original one disintegrated (after 30 years and about 2000-2500 rounds).
Factory ammo varies widely in terms of power, so shop wisely to make sure you don’t wind up with a weak sister .40 S&W in your holster!

10mm CDE, my dream gun from the 80s.
Thanks for the great video. Love your vids and this particular subject.
Back in the 1980’s and early 90’s I had five 10 mm, three were some form of Delta Elite, two versions if the standard model, one stainless and one blued, one stainless Delta Elite Gold Cup. Of all the autoloading handguns I’ve had, they were the most accurate I’ve ever owned or shot, especially as three were equipped with target sights.
As they were primarily target guns (handgun silhouette) the accuracy as well as the flatter shooting cartridge made them really pleasurable guns to shoot. Regardless what people think, a large majority of people won’t shoot a magazine of 10 mm - they find it too much. In this regard, the 10 mm is like it’s like a magnum, most S&W 29’s have not been shot a full cylinder of full-house factory loads.
Although Ian did reference the 200/1200 loading of the first Norma factory 10mm loads, this load is still ASTM standard load and multiple manufacturers stand behind that loading. It does recoil harder than a 40 S&W loading, which is why the FBI developed the lighter load.
About the 10mm - this really is a viable 100 yard cartridge with lower bullet drop and retained energies well over, say the full load 9 mm.
The biggest difference in effectiveness in handgun loadings today over as recent as the 1980’s is bullet designs of today, allowing for superior performance than bullets before, hence the reliance on the 9mm today. Plus most people are more recoil sensitive, finding shooting a 10 mm less pleasant to shoot.
All this. I would add, the 10mm Auto cartridge was developed with the performance of 357magnum and 41magnum in mind, but in a smaller semiauto service pistol case. With factory 357 being ~500ft-lbs and 41mag at around 700ft-lbs, 10mmAuto was initially loaded for ~600ft-lbs. I think the stoutest 200gr handload I've seen listed in a manual was supposed to run 1250fps (close to 700ft-lbs).
It's not really surprising that full power 10mmAuto is more of a niche load these days. When it came on the scene, .357magnum had been around for 50years and yet most police departments were still standardized on the 38spl for their wheel guns and transitioning to 9mmPara for semiautos. Pretty much every complaint that would be levied on 10mmAuto had been addressed against 357magnum (and 41mag) decades earlier.
I was an early adopter of the Glock 20 and its large grip isn't for everyone, but it delivers it's recoil IMO in a much more pleasant and controllable way than a K Frame 357. Firing uncompensated Deltas reminded me more of my 2-1/2" bbl model 19 with compact grips than I liked. I never really considered stock Deltas to be a good fit for full power 10mmAuto.
molochi; from being told of the development, Cooper was first looking at a super 9mm, and was an aficionado over the 38 Super (before it was adopted by IPSC shooters to make “Major Power Factor”) they found out the cake heads blew out with loads that approximated the lighter bullet weight .357 loads, so Cooper and Maj. George Nonte developed a wildcat fitting a Colt Commander using a cut down .223 case loaded with 110 grain .357 bullets. According to what I’ve been told and researched, the idea of getting an upgrade to bullet weight and velocity developed into a wildcat using a 38-40 case, with the rim cut down and an extractor groove cut to allow case extraction. Someone had contacts with Norma, who based upon a target bullet weight/velocity spec, which initially was a 200 gr. bullet at 1250 FPS and 140 bullet at 1350. Both were relatively hot and some people had problems with the recoil. I don’t recall an attempt to approximate the 41 magnum, but that both rounds kinda fell in a Sweet Spot.
I never had problems with recoil, as I wasn’t trying combat shooting, just hunting and silhouette shooting, both endeavors where doing mag dumps are not the norm.
Additionally, during the development of the modern pistol technique, at about the same time, the most common shooting technique was the Weaver technique which incorporated recoil management, unlike today’s Isosceles technique.
BTW, I owned and tried the original Mag-N-Port (the original modern porting) and disliked it greatly, as IMO all ported barrels are exceedingly loud and obnoxious, and if shot prone or supported, increased muzzle blast obnoxiously as well.
Heh, when I started shooting I preferred weaver, still do really. What really got me into 10mmAuto fandom was that I was shooting IPSC with an unported glock17L but they (the local organizers) wouldn't accept 9mm loaded up to major PF. At the time I could afford a glock20 but not a decent 1911 and the 21 wasn't out yet. Also, at the time I was bowhunting pigs and it was legal to carry a 10mmAuto during deerseason. It made for a comforting backup.
I would love to have one of these... not to shoot, just to mount on my wall and look at lol. The 1911 is such a beautiful gun.
I got one for a steal at $400 a couple years ago. I believe it's a 1st Gen though, haven't shot it yet.
Just get a 1911 in .45ACP. No need to seek out such an obscure chambering.
@Andre McGoo I have no problem with 10mm, but Amehdion said they wanted a 1911 just to have on the wall and admire. Seems sensible to me then to just get a relatively inexpensive modern 1911 in .45 rather than seeking out one specifically in 10mm.
No need to put words in my mouth that I never uttered - I'm all in favor of having a variety of different handgun cartridges on the market.
I think the 1911 is pretty ugly, unless it's fancied up like this, the grizzly, or a subcompact model. A tinkered, specialized design is always interesting to me
I dropped a Wilson combat beaver tail in mine and it is an amazing difference. Stock tail was way to much bite. Very pleased with the simple upgrade.
I've had a Delta Elite since 1992. Had it satin hard chromed back then and have always loved it. I haven't shot it recently as I fell out of regular shooting and reloading for some time but will be getting back into it in the next couple of years as kids are growing up and I have some more time and disposable income.
I am short, only 5'4", and a single stack with slim grips and a reduced length trigger fits my hand perfectly allowing me to have a proper grip and therefore control. One thing I added back in the dark ages was a HARRTS Recoil Reducer. This is a full length guide rod with tungsten ball bearings and liquid mercury inside. When firing the mass concentrates at the end and has a notable impact on felt recoil.
They haven't been around for decades but I have always loved it.
Why didn't they radius those inside corners to reduce stress risers even more?
I had one of these back in the day. Frame cracked on me and I've been leery of 10mm 1911s ever since. I do have a steel framed 10mm pistol, it's a EAA Witness. All that aside, 10mm is best mm.
EAA Witness is a good budget handgun to begin with, coming in 10mm Auto is a major plus.
Didn't the EAA have issues with cracking the frame as well?
Welp, TIL. I'd never heard of a Witness frame cracking before, but evidently there was a run of frames that were cast differently than the normal square blocky style. From what I've read it was a short term thing as Tanfoglio went back to the square style frame castings which solved the issue. At any rate, I've had mine for a few years now and I've put god knows how many rounds through it. No issues with the frame, and it's still more accurate than I am.

I agree, until they make an 11mm.

I personally think 7.62mm is the best mm, not sure why though.
Thank you! Excellent information was looking to get this Delta Elite.
Nice job on the video. It was detailed and I learned some things I didn't know about the Delta Elite. My experience with my stainless model purchased in 1991 was not very good. Just taking the gun apart and looking inside the slide, tooling marks and sharp edges were visible. The trigger was very gritty feeling out of the box which was due to tooling marks on the working face of the sear. The gun was never what I would consider reliable. Out of the box, it would have a FTF around once per mag. When I finally got rid of it, it was down to about one failure per box of 50 rounds (after lots of work). That's with factory ammo, many different reloads (light to heavy loads with light to heavy bullets), recoil springs, etc. I finally ended up with a sig p229 (.357 sig) for about the same money and never looked back. Granted, this is just one data point. I'm sure others had better experiences than I did.
The Delta Elite was my first 10mm. I now have 10 10mms.

Hey Ian, I've got one of those that I had to modify due to the recoil system. The recoil spring buffer was cracked and the recoil springs were shot. I contacted colt and they said to put a gold cup spring in it. I also put a Wilson Combat recoil spring buffer. Now it's fine and is much better then the stock guns.
That's a really interesting piece of design info about that frame cracking...
Win millimeter
BS your not winning with 850fps. Smaller calibers hold + release more faster. Id rather make it rain then launch baseballs
Noneshere
But 10mm isn't doing 850 fps. It's usually going about 1200 fps, regularly more, so I don't know where you get the idea of it being a big, slow projectile.
@@five5105 The speed comes at a huge cost, though. 10mm handguns often begin to malfunction well before 9mm and 45acp because of the intense stress that cartridge puts on gun parts.
@@strongside4565 Who cares? Gun just go boom boom.
I've always been a fan of the 1911, they may be over 100 years old but the design is tried and tested, nothing fancy it just works, and it's always interesting to see these variants in different calibres
The 1911 is a tried and true masterpiece
I love my Ruger Super Redhawk in 10mm with a 6.5 inch barrel. If Ruger comes out with an SR10 pistol and the PC Carbine in 10mm you would see a super hot market. I have the Ruger SR9 and two SR9Cs that I teamed up with the Ruger PC 9 Carbine - a super rifle and pistol match-up.
Thanks for another great video.
Another great video..I remember a bright stainless version when I was too young to buy one - wish they would bring that finish and that gun back
Back in the late 1970's I had a Colt Government in 38 super that I really loved. When hand loaded to it's hotter levels it was on par with some of the factory loaded .357's and comparing it to a .357 wheel gun I had was much easier to control especially in rapid fire keeping it on target. I would usually load it to 1400 -1500 fps and experienced no to little cratering of the primers.
Some of the older calibres have been forgotten because they are not fashionable..people love reinventing the wheel....6.5x54 is a good rifle round, just an archaic type...
+ Forgotten Weapons
the best way to tame Colt 10 mm Delta Elite, is with a 6-inch barrel and slide... shoulder holster carry.
Another adjustment that can be made to help with recoil is a minimally radiused firing pin stop. Most firing pin stops have an aggressive radius to allow easy racking. By only marginally breaking the corner of the stop so it is not completely square and thus a shear, it takes more for for the slide to come back and helps felt recoil.
thanks for all the interesting content!
Man that looks so nice, I want it!
Yo whats up Salokin!
I like how Colt had to make a conversion before they bothered addressing an issue with 1911's that had been known for how long at that point, 70 years?
I had a Delta Gold Cup when I lived in Florida years ago. I needed money to move back to Maine, so it got sold. Was one of the best guns I've ever owned.
I bought a new Delta Elite stainless about 2014/15 but immediately ordered a “SpringCo” recoil guide rod and installed it. This device has very stiff internal springs that catch the slide just before it impacts the frame. Works like a charm and I can handload rounds to any recipe I like without worrying about my pistol frame. Now, by stating that, I do NOT mean I over-power any loads beyond those clearly listed in my loading manuals, of which I have about 10. I stick to the load as listed, being very careful to use the same projectile & primer, exactly. Primer power varies greatly in some brands, so if you’re going to load 10mm’s hot, stick to maximum powder weights but work them up gradually. There are old reloaders (me), and there are bold reloaders, but there aren’t any old, bold reloaders! 😉
And if you want more, go for the 460 rowland conversion
Standard Colt 10mm magazine capacity is 8 rounds, not 9. Metalform made some 9 round mags with a different follower. Wilson Combat made a 9 round mag, and Chip McCormick / Shooting Star made a 9 round mag.
Beautiful gun, nice review. There were several initial Norma loads, with the best being a 170gr @ 1300fps. It didn't open much and pentr. to 17+ inches. I get the same from SOTA Ranger 180gr @ 1050+ fps, from my G22. As I've said, performance wise 10/40 can be the same, when U know!
Hammer forged frame sweetness. Love these pieces.
I love my Colt delta Elite 10mm shot pin matches and swinging plats, matches bought it for my wife, never had a jam or malfunction, and very manageable recoil, I called it my king of pins
How many rounds through it and have you shot the really hot rounds too?
@@sctm81 I really don’t know how many rounds I have shot through it,I reload my own,I do 300 at a time as at the time that’s all the brass I could find, no loaded rounds, had to wait 6 weeks to get it when it first came out, 7 years of match shooting, and 20 or so just plinking at my country place, wore out the recoil bushing rubber bushing the gun smith said he had never Sean one wear our, I said I shoot a lot
@@davidanderson3999 nice. I guess just like a hot rod it can take some boost but there just is more wear and tear the higher you go.
I can't wait for old man Ian to show us some STI 19/2011's in the future.
I've wanted a video on this gun for so long
I've been waiting so long for this video...!
Delta elite is such a bad ass name for a pistol
This channel makes me want to buy a gun now
Now? You mean buy another gun, right?
Jeremiah90526 yes indeed
Whew, I was scared for a second there that you might not have some protection at home. 10mm is best caliber, so it is a good idea to get one. I am still waiting for the Hudson H10 to get into 10mm though.
@@Jeremiah90526 Ugh, Americans and their pRoTeCtIoN. Many other countries don't have guns and do just fine. There is no need for "pRoTeCtIoN".
@@heavypupper1219 Wtf are you talking about st*pid boy
Just came across one of these in the wild the other day. Didn’t get a chance to shoot it but was still pretty cool to handle.
You can actually feed these things from standard .45 ACP mags. My 1990 Delta ocassionally fails to hold open on empty, but switching to the .45 mags makes it hold open every time. Glad to see this vid!
I'd love to see a video on a Mateba.
Ian:
Those better features on the new Delta Elite's: is a better steel alloy for the frame one of them?
Also, do you know if 460 Rowland conversions also have cracking or breakage issues?
The original .460 Rowland conversions depended upon the extra mass of a muzzle brake compensator threaded to the barrel. The action of the escaping high-pressure gas also delays unlocking. I wouldn't trust the current conversions that only have a ported barrel, and I'd be leery of any muzzle break without baffles unless it is threaded to a coned/heavy profile barrel.
Jack Wagon,
Follow Rowland's specs as to which models to use and you shouldn't experience any cracked frames. Some 1911s will crack which is why they have their model list.
I love my DE. I have an original version built in 1989. The full power 10mm Auto cartridges are a handful even out of a full frame 1911.
Did I miss the Wildey video you said you were making in the backup pistol competition video? I’ve always been fascinated with Wildey pistols, so I’m really looking forward to seeing that video!
10MM ATOM POWAAAAAAH!!!!!!!
Man the fan base behind this cartridge is crazy XD
“Hand Cannoneering” I belly laughed
It occurs to me that the Delta reboot lasted from 2008-2016. Original production ran from 1988-1996. Almost the same amount of time, 20 years later. Then Colt gave the Delta the XSE treatment and production of the old school Delta Elite ended. Mine is from the 2009-2016 production and other than a different texture on the Pachmyrs is identical in every way to the original guns. And I’m so glad I managed to snag one in that configuration-I wanted one while they were in original production and kept getting talked out of it by acquaintances and shooting enthusiasts because 10mm wasn’t as easy to find back then. This time, I took the plunge and I’m glad I did.
I love my early stainless delta elite.Ive always been told to run spec ammo on it and have no problems.
"If you want to go hand-cannoneering, perhaps the 10mm isn't the best option for you".
*Laughs in Glock 20*
Sad Glock 40 noises.
Laughs even louder in tanfoglio gold match.
A lot of 10mm videos coming out lately, makes me think something's going to be released in that soon
Excellent content, thank you !!
I recently got ahold of a 89 Delta elete and I love it
Hi Iain, just fyi you mispelled Colt in the last sentence of the first paragraph
its a 1911 on steroids but i would much rather have a Colt 10 mm than something as useless as a S&W 500 or Desert Eagle 50.
tell that to people who actually shoot .50 AE accurately
@@davidpriester7240 Cool Ill send you a Scooby snack
@@davidpriester7240 why would you want a pistol that shoots 50ae? 10mm kicks like crazy and 50ae is even more inaccurate. Especially if you use anything thats not a desert eagle(aka anything that is smaller than 2 bricks).
@@stompingpeak2043 It is a handgun cartridge after all. It was not created with the most intense accuracy or range in mind. Im likely going to be purchasing a CMMG Banshee 300 series chambered in 10mm. Ar pistol chambered in 10 mm with an 8 inch barrel, surely to make it slightly more accurate to an extent, however, it is a handgun cartridge and the effective range is obviously going to be much much less than 5.56 or 7.62 x 39mm
@@davidpriester7240 you made my point. Smaller rounds are just as good(and better in most ways since you can easily get follow up shots)
I've been wanting to add a 10mm to my collection. Ive been debating between a Delta Elite and a Tangfolio Whitness. I kinda want the Colt just because it's a Colt but the CZ design is excellent and Tangfolio is one of the best CZ clones on the market.
I've got a older 10mm delta elite. Never been fired as of yet.
GREAT PROGRAM thanks...........
Why oh why didn't Colt retain the .45 width mag and make it staggered for the 10mm?
That's a good question, in fact you don't even see that to this day. All "single stack" 1911s in smaller cases use ribs like that instead of allowing the rounds to stagger. Maybe a reliability thing, a stagger really should be all or nothing, with only a slight stagger the rounds press into the side of the magazine creating friction and slowing the lifting of the next round. True double stack stagger mags stack two rows and only push the rounds together at the top.
@@snek9353 I suspect it's a reliability things as well. Consider: the 1911 was designed as a single stack pistol in .45 ACP with a 5 inch barrel and made of all steel for major components. Deviate from that formula in any way, and you start introducing variables that can lead to cascading failures. Hell, look at Glock's Gen4 fiasco where their 9mm pistols (the modern day gold standard for reliable pistols) suddenly went tits up because they decided to optimize the platform for .40 S&W to the point where getting one to actually run was almost an exercise in esoterica as the 1911 can be.
@@RaderizDorret Well that was a lot of nothing.
Single feed best feed
But really, double stacked would require some pretty hefty design changes.
And as with a 45, staggering the rounds in such a way that you get a single extra bullet almost doubles thickness of the mag
And single stack/feed are more reliable in general
@@alexanderstrickland9036 You know there's double/stagger stack 1911s in 45 right? There's also of course many others that are stagger/double 45 as well, even some true double stack.
I’ve been contemplating buying a 1 centimeter. Now that ammo is becoming more available and cheaper.
Underrated comment
@thatonescrambler except 5 years later, ammo is not cheaper. Especially for 10mm.
@@baconatordoom eh if i was worried about the price i wouldn't like expensive things
One my favorite guns. Should have gotten one of the Gold Cup versions when I had the chance. Heard the new SS versions are pretty good as well, unfortunately we can't get them here in MA.
I’ve owned a “Combat Delta Elite” since around 1990. This version has a duo-tone finish. Unfortunately I installed a solid guide rod, flared mage well, ambi-safety, aftermarket mainspring housing, beaver tail grip safety, Pachmayer slide stop and aftermarket grip panels. I wish I had saved the take-off parts. Live and learn. I’ve probably sent in excess of 2,000 rounds down the tube over the years without issue.
Gorgeous piece. If only there was a (visual) equivalent of the 10mm Zenith out of Deus Ex Human Revolution when fully kitted out
You've excellent taste in firearms and video games, Mamiya645.
*45acp guys disliked this video lol*
10mm is the master race and everybody knows it, but these guys are happy to feel the recoil of their 45s without the added performance.
45 acp: man stopper
10mm: bear stopper and hunting round.
There are some nice 45 rounds now like Winchester Ranger-T which expands to 25mm
@@SoccerVJ2011 so you're saying its advantage 45 again (vs 9mm)?
I was always a little distrustful of a Kimber 10mm I had got years ago, it was developed in the middle of the '10mm is .40S&W long now' phase. When the beefy Sig P220 10mm came out, I jumped on it - it seems it was purpose built for running hotter ammo through it.
I have a delta elite and i love it (the original production model)
"...but these go up to 11.25." Spinal double Tap
I bought one of these for $400 and will never sell it.
Jake Cooke wow you stole it.
I have a Delta Elite/Gold Cup National Match 10mm(not a typo). It has”Delta Elite 10mm Auto”on one side of the slide,”Gold Cup” on the other side, and”National Match”stamped towards the front of the slide. It has what looks to be customized Pacmyer(not sure I spelled that right)grips with a silver stallion where the red triangle would be. I’ve never seen another one like it! I absolutely LOVE this weapon, and have turned down a small fortune for it. Not a bad score considering I found it in a pawn shop.
Colt also made the 10mm Colt Delta Gold Cup pistol, both in stainless and a few in blue. I had one of the blue models and loved it. It was an awesome handgun. Unfortunately it was stolen and never recovered.
My 1st cartridge handgun is my stainless Delta Gold Cup. Still my favorite 25 years later.
@@thomasweisbeck4830 I called dealers all over the country looking for a stainless model without success, but found one in blue, so I took it. It turned out that Colt only made a small number of the blue models, so for a while I had a semi-rare Colt pistol. I sure miss it!
@@340wbymag I often wondered about the blue models. My stainless was made in 1991; I bought it used in 1993. I also have a blued Delta Elite made in 1988. Both are superb performers.
