  • A home that has been in disrepair for nearly 13 years has one month to clean up the property or tear it down. It's been deemed a nuisance home in Seminole County. FOX 35's Marie Edinger looked into how this process works, what the homeowners are responsible for, and when the county can come in and condemn a home, tear it down, and sell it -- while recouping the costs.

Shame on the county. They should come up with a way to help these people, not threaten them with homelessness.

I guess I'm a fan of property rights, even when a property is "in disrepair." Unless the "disrepair" is causing parts of the house to fall on people in the streets or sidewalks or have chemical spills that drain onto public property or the neighbors' property, why is it any of the government's business what they do with their own property?

How about starting a program to help these people clean up and do repairs?! Most are poor, disabled and or elderly. Why are people so hateful? #shameonSeminolecounty

So sad ... if just elderly and not financially (or no longer physically) able to repair on their own. Why not ask local churches and good samaritans to help out by donating their time, skills, or money.
It would be different if this were a couple of college aged kids renting or owning a neglected home to use as a drug house in a quiet and an elderly neighborhood; near college campuses and high schools.

Wish they would do this in our area. We have crackheads squatting in some homes that are empty and falling apart. We are deep country so we never see things like this….but now these people walking at all hours of the day and night and stealing from peoples yards etc.

The county should help these elderly out. The county has no heart at all, where can the elderly get money to fix the house?

13 years of zoning violations. 13 years! Those owners should have sold the property 13 years ago when they realized it was a dump.

@@lastboomer6164Yeah, the woman is in her 80's, so she was in her 70's when things started going downhill. Where were the neighbors that should have helped?

@@SandcastleDreams Not able to answer that one. Here’s a question for you? Where was her children or extended family at this time? At the end of the day there’s 13 years of zoning violations and from the look of things 25 years of neglect and lack of maintenance on the property. Surprised that the taxes were paid!

@@lastboomer6164 Taxes may have been all she could handle. High winds from tropical storms and hurricanes can do a lot of damage and some of it doesn't show up until years later.
We had a tornado come through at the end of a hurricane in Orlando and did not realize the damage it had really done until over a year later when our roof suddenly started leaking like a sieve.
And once your roof goes, everything else goes downhill quickly.
By the time we saved up to have it fixed it was too far gone.
My husband finally got his VA benefits and we were able to sell it "as is" and told them they would have to replace it. We moved to a better place.
We sold it right as the property prices were ballooning. The buyers have an RV and parked it there. The old house is still sitting there.
