    Troika! Numinous Edition is a fantasy RPG created by Daniel Sell of the Melsonian Arts Council. It uses the base rules of Fighting Fantasy to create a setting similar to Planescape, where characters from across the multiverse can have adventures.

    Bought the game and ran the adventure for my friends. They were confused at first but then got into it and we all had a great time.

    Troika is really fun, but I have a hard time really understanding how to do a long term, sensical campaign for it

    • @brasida6202
      @brasida6202 Před 4 lety +21

      It's actually very easy to adapt adventures from other systems. The campaign I'm currently running is a quest to find the legendary city of Troika and each adventure is a different plane/planet where the characters look for a portal (or a ship) to go to the next world.

    I really hope that they release more scenarios/adventures for troika. I think it's a great setting to write own scenarios for but I would like some more inspiration from the creators :)

    0:58 if you ever get the time, play the INkle Sorcery! Adaptation.
    You don't need to play the whole thing, but 1 and 2 are EXCELLENT, and you can have hours of fun with them.
    Really good for story ideas.

      I believe Troika took inspiration from these games, as it uses a few of the same spells! (Like the mysterious Zed spell)

    Looks good! I've been meaning to pick up a copy of Troika, this really pushes that over the edge. Of course the Melsonia site is just full of stuff I want to buy. Got my eye on that Wet Grandpa (which is always hilarious to say).

    I noticed in the original that ranged combat was almost completely overlooked; Fumbles and Mighty blows were only considered for melee combat and shooting was treated as an opposed throw (attack. + dice versus defence + dice) which didn't work as there were no defensive skills and when a character armed with a bow shoots at one armed with a sword, it's hardly an opposed action. This is fixed with a few easy tweaks (ranged combat is an unopposed throw in other FF games) but I was curious whether the Numinous Edition addressed the issue? Great review...as usual.

    • @pancakel8275
      @pancakel8275 Před 3 lety

      The numinous edition states that shooting ranged is against the opponents skill or defense skill (total presumably). It seems to use skill as an innate armour class and that's how I'm running it.
      I don't see why you can't apply mighty blows or oops table to your ranged attack on a 11 or 66.

    • @gran9968
      @gran9968 Před 3 lety +1

      Ranged combat in Troika! Is an opposed roll against an opponent's defensive advanced skill, say "dodge" or "shield usage" or "eating bullets"
      If the attacker wins, it hits, if the defender wins, it does not take damage; Fumbles and mighty blows apply normally

    I don't undrstand - what is the difference between this troika and this one - is it mainly the setting / the adventure, or are there are other new classes?

    I am hoping to run my first game of Troika but I had a question, hopefully someone can help me. The book says that in an unopposed situ, players will attempt to roll under a given value, but they can add a skill bonus to their roll.
    Eg. Players fall into a raging stream, have to swim to the side. Roll under (let's say) 15 and you succeed.
    In that scenario, wouldn't the player with a good swimming skill, a higher value, be disadvantaged against someone with a lower or lack of skill?
    Sorry if daft question, new to all this

    Be quite cool if you did a vid on the '05R' systems.
    It seems to be getting some traction and is actually quite cool. It's not in the minimalist camp of the OSR, but they do offer something different which is fun to experiment with I think.

    I keep hearing interesting things about Troika!, but given that 'Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2nd Edition' from Arion Games exists, I'm still wondering why Troika! was made... I suppose it's less about keeping the rules in print (AFF 2E already does that), but more as a means of promoting the high abstract/psychedelic setting? 🤔

    • @crowgoblin

      Troika is more inline with original AFF but AFF2e is bloated with complications and modifiers, to the point where it’s lost the feel of what made AFF fast and fun at the table.

    I'm a bit disappointed in these old Troika reviews because they didn't touch on the (poor) basic rules. Troika is All Fluff, No Stuff... fantastic to read and look at, but not to play because the gameplay flow isn't thought about.
