    One of FF's legacies is some fantastic fantasy art. Russ Nicholson, Iain Miller and John Blanche all contributed some of their best work. As to whether it was more of a British thing, maaaaaaybe. Unsure if Warlock (the FF magazine) was published in the states, but over here it was as widely known, if not more so, than White Dwarf.

    From my experience, you can literally make whatever you want with this game, we even got to the point to change some of the few rules. It doesn't have to be necessary fantasy or completely fantasy in the sense that we all intend it

    • @pspboy7

      It was both actually. Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone brought the game to both the UK and the USA, but it all started in the UK if I remember correctly.

    • @jeffeppenbach
      @jeffeppenbach Před 6 lety +6

      The Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG was regularly advertised in magazines like Dragon back in the 80's. And, of course, you could get the FF gamebooks just about anywhere in the US.
      Oh, and don't get Steve Jackson (Co-Founder of Games Workshop, creator and writer of Fighting Fantasy books), confused with Steve Jackson (US founder of Steve Jackson Games and writer of Fighting Fantasy books). Just because they have the same name, are cornerstone founders of the role playing industry, both wrote the same kind of books, in the same line of books, and reportedly look a lot alike, you shouldn't get them mixed up.

    I can see how Troika was inspired by the Advanced Fighting Fantasy system, AFF manages a D6 combat system with the same type of tables. Troika seems like a fun and compact twist on familiar ground (to me at least). Definitely going to pick up a copy

  • @jherrenor
    @jherrenor Před 4 lety

    I'm surprised they are allowed to use a lot of the features of Advanced Fighting Fantasy including some of the unique names used in that series. Sure the rules are different and I'm sure they must have a license for that but it just strikes me as odd especially since it has no relation to Fighting Fantasy. Like with the Skill, Stamina and Luck attributes, there's not even an attempt to name them differently. I'm confused.

    • @QuestingBeast
      @QuestingBeast  Před 4 lety +2

      It's not possible to legally protect game mechanics, and terms like Skill, Stamina, and Luck are generic terms that anyone can use.

    • @jherrenor
      @jherrenor Před 4 lety +1

      @@QuestingBeast I get that but even the little things like the Secret Signs skill is unique to FF as far as I am aware, and Telak the Swordbearer are known aspects in the series. I know Troika is vastly different but it does come across as lazy that they couldn't think of a new bunch of names.

    • @rossh7186

    I have read the book and listened to your excellent review. However, I don't understand the weapon damage table. I roll 1D6, consult the chart and find my weapon damage. However, the last column on the right reads '7+'. How do I reach a 7 on a 1D6? What detail (probably obvious) am I missing? Thanks ahead of time. It is a beautiful game. Love the initiative system and the many character flavors.
    By the way, have you seen David Schirduan's cool Troika! Generator & Tracker. It's fun! technicalgrimoire.com/troikagenerator

    • @bisalwayswright88
      @bisalwayswright88 Před 4 lety

      From the brief look I've had at this system, there are certain skills which modify damage. So for example if you roll a 6, and have a +1 modifier, that would make it a 7. I have only just discovered this systems and had a very brief look at the free PDF to decide if it was something I'd want to buy so I don't know what the skills or context through which damage will be modified :)
