Thanks for the review Ben! I'm not sure my ego will survive it though.
I think that's a bit reductive. I got more Gene Wolfe, but there are an awful lot of different influences here.
@@sosrope3420 Nope
Please note that there is a FREE artless version of the game that I forgot to mention because I'm an idiot. (Has a NSFW cover). www.drivethrurpg.com/product/199604/Troika--Free-Artless-Edition?affiliate_id=379088
Questing Beast why is that cover nsfw?
Thanks for the link!
Questing Beast You, sir, are bad for my wallet. I thank you.
I am mildly obsessed with the TROIKA! flavor, and was very excited to see you review this game. Thank you!
Recently discovered your channel, picked up a few titles on your recommendation. Really digging your content, keep it up!
Recent sub here, really loving all your content so far! Your vids are a great resource for expanding my knowledge of the wide variety of OSR RPGs are out there!
So glad to see that you're reviewing this awesome game! The initiative card Kickstarter for it looks great too.
Amazing work Sir !
Nice! I am totally going to seek this one out!
Thanks Ben , congratulations on knave 2e .
Would love to see your review of the advanced fighting fantasy ruleset
This is so nice! The rules remind me so much of how Terry Pratchett would write, it warms my heart. Especially the class and spell descriptions. Thank you for this!
Fighting fantasy adventure books was how I got to know about rpg.
One of FF's legacies is some fantastic fantasy art. Russ Nicholson, Iain Miller and John Blanche all contributed some of their best work. As to whether it was more of a British thing, maaaaaaybe. Unsure if Warlock (the FF magazine) was published in the states, but over here it was as widely known, if not more so, than White Dwarf.
The bummer is, most if the game books you cover are out if print, and only the PDFs are available. :(
"it takes the bones of an old game and makes something really fascinating and beautiful out of them"
So it's game scrimshaw, then? :)
Not to be confused (also) with Steve Jackson's The Fantasy Trip / Metagaming (Melee, Wizard, In the Labyrinth, etc.).
From my experience, you can literally make whatever you want with this game, we even got to the point to change some of the few rules. It doesn't have to be necessary fantasy or completely fantasy in the sense that we all intend it
They just kickstarted a new print of troika with a hard cover and much more art!

You are even in the campaign page 😅
Can you review Dragon Warriors?
I'm surprised that you hadn't heard of FF before.
Was it more of a British thing than an American thing? That's the impression I get.
It was both actually. Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone brought the game to both the UK and the USA, but it all started in the UK if I remember correctly.
I paused the video, sat back in my chair, and did a double-take when he said he'd never heard of Fighting Fantasy.
The Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG was regularly advertised in magazines like Dragon back in the 80's. And, of course, you could get the FF gamebooks just about anywhere in the US.
Oh, and don't get Steve Jackson (Co-Founder of Games Workshop, creator and writer of Fighting Fantasy books), confused with Steve Jackson (US founder of Steve Jackson Games and writer of Fighting Fantasy books). Just because they have the same name, are cornerstone founders of the role playing industry, both wrote the same kind of books, in the same line of books, and reportedly look a lot alike, you shouldn't get them mixed up.
One of those weird gaps in my gaming knowledge, I guess.
I've looked to some of your videos and I'm impressed how you didn't came across Fighting Fantasy gamebooks or even some other gamebooks. It's like liking elves, dwarves or orcs and do not know the existence of Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. Lol! You should do some videos about Fighting Fantasy. ;)
Nothing happens if you dont put yourself out ther... so here goes...
I heard at the end of the video that you'd like to play in a game of Troika? I am going to be streaming roughly 8 episodes of it on my Twitch channel this coming April/May (probably on a saturday starting around 8 or 9pm EST and each session lasting about 2 hours)
My handle is the same on twitch, twitter, instagram and discord as it is here, and i have the smae profile pic too. Feel free to reach out if you would like to play!
I can see how Troika was inspired by the Advanced Fighting Fantasy system, AFF manages a D6 combat system with the same type of tables. Troika seems like a fun and compact twist on familiar ground (to me at least). Definitely going to pick up a copy
Wow
This sounds like a really interesting game.
How would it fit to Maze Rats?
Well you can use Maze Rats' random tables in any RPG.
Questing Beast and that is genuinely one of the things I REALLY like about Maze Rats. Had great fun using those tables for all sorts.
On another note, is it as well to include a link to the Kickstarter in your description?
Looks like it already ended: www.kickstarter.com/projects/846377662/troika-initiative-cards
Questing Beast Shame. Off the back of your video I have however now downloaded the rules so 👍😄🎲
I'm surprised they are allowed to use a lot of the features of Advanced Fighting Fantasy including some of the unique names used in that series. Sure the rules are different and I'm sure they must have a license for that but it just strikes me as odd especially since it has no relation to Fighting Fantasy. Like with the Skill, Stamina and Luck attributes, there's not even an attempt to name them differently. I'm confused.
It's not possible to legally protect game mechanics, and terms like Skill, Stamina, and Luck are generic terms that anyone can use.
@@QuestingBeast I get that but even the little things like the Secret Signs skill is unique to FF as far as I am aware, and Telak the Swordbearer are known aspects in the series. I know Troika is vastly different but it does come across as lazy that they couldn't think of a new bunch of names.
doesn't it leave it up to the GM and players as to whether there is some kind of connection between the worlds? Imitation is a form of flattery, also.
Links to buying it are no longer working!
Looks like they were taken down after the book was replaced by the Numinous Edition of Troika: czcams.com/video/QvhtyihMSjI/video.html
Unfortunate to grow up without exposure to Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf.
I have read the book and listened to your excellent review. However, I don't understand the weapon damage table. I roll 1D6, consult the chart and find my weapon damage. However, the last column on the right reads '7+'. How do I reach a 7 on a 1D6? What detail (probably obvious) am I missing? Thanks ahead of time. It is a beautiful game. Love the initiative system and the many character flavors.
By the way, have you seen David Schirduan's cool Troika! Generator & Tracker. It's fun! technicalgrimoire.com/troikagenerator
From the brief look I've had at this system, there are certain skills which modify damage. So for example if you roll a 6, and have a +1 modifier, that would make it a 7. I have only just discovered this systems and had a very brief look at the free PDF to decide if it was something I'd want to buy so I don't know what the skills or context through which damage will be modified :)
Fighting Fantasy several decades ago...
It has great ideas and aesthetics but the system is quite bad, honestly.
